¹After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to win them for himself.

¹Après ces choses et ces actes de fidélité, parut Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, qui pénétra en Juda, et assiégea les villes fortes, dans l'intention de s'en emparer.

¹אחרי הדברים והאמת האלה בא סנחריב מלך אשור ויבא ביהודה ויחן על הערים הבצרות ויאמר לבקעם אליו׃

²And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,

²Ezéchias, voyant que Sanchérib était venu et qu'il se proposait d'attaquer Jérusalem,

²וירא יחזקיהו כי בא סנחריב ופניו למלחמה על ירושלם׃

³he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city; and they helped him.

³tint conseil avec ses chefs et ses hommes vaillants, afin de boucher les sources d'eau qui étaient hors de la ville; et ils furent de son avis.

³ויועץ עם שריו וגבריו לסתום את מימי העינות אשר מחוץ לעיר ויעזרוהו׃

⁴So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?

⁴Une foule de gens se rassemblèrent, et ils bouchèrent toutes les sources et le ruisseau qui coule au milieu de la contrée. Pourquoi, disaient-ils, les rois d'Assyrie trouveraient-ils à leur arrivée des eaux en abondance?

⁴ויקבצו עם רב ויסתמו את כל המעינות ואת הנחל השוטף בתוך הארץ לאמר למה יבואו מלכי אשור ומצאו מים רבים׃

⁵And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised [it] up to the towers, and the other wall without, and strengthened Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.

⁵Ezéchias prit courage; il reconstruisit la muraille qui était en ruine et l'éleva jusqu'aux tours, bâtit un autre mur en dehors, fortifia Millo dans la cité de David, et prépara une quantité d'armes et de boucliers.

⁵ויתחזק ויבן את כל החומה הפרוצה ויעל על המגדלות ולחוצה החומה אחרת ויחזק את המלוא עיר דויד ויעש שלח לרב ומגנים׃

⁶And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spake comfortably to them, saying,

⁶Il donna des chefs militaires au peuple, et les réunit auprès de lui sur la place de la porte de la ville. S'adressant à leur coeur, il dit:

⁶ויתן שרי מלחמות על העם ויקבצם אליו אל רחוב שער העיר וידבר על לבבם לאמר׃

⁷Be strong and of good courage, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there is a greater with us than with him:

⁷Fortifiez-vous et ayez du courage! Ne craignez point et ne soyez point effrayés devant le roi d'Assyrie et devant toute la multitude qui est avec lui; car avec nous il y a plus qu'avec lui.

⁷חזקו ואמצו אל תיראו ואל תחתו מפני מלך אשור ומלפני כל ההמון אשר עמו כי עמנו רב מעמו׃

⁸with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Jehovah our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

⁸Avec lui est un bras de chair, et avec nous l'Eternel, notre Dieu, qui nous aidera et qui combattra pour nous. Le peuple eut confiance dans les paroles d'Ezéchias, roi de Juda.

⁸עמו זרוע בשר ועמנו יהוה אלהינו לעזרנו ולהלחם מלחמתנו ויסמכו העם על דברי יחזקיהו מלך יהודה׃

⁹After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,

⁹Après cela, Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem, pendant qu'il était devant Lakis avec toutes ses forces; il les envoya vers Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et vers tous ceux de Juda qui étaient à Jérusalem, pour leur dire:

⁹אחר זה שלח סנחריב מלך אשור עבדיו ירושלימה והוא על לכיש וכל ממשלתו עמו על יחזקיהו מלך יהודה ועל כל יהודה אשר בירושלם לאמר׃

¹⁰Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do ye trust, that ye abide the siege in Jerusalem?

¹⁰Ainsi parle Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie: Sur quoi repose votre confiance, pour que vous restiez à Jérusalem dans la détresse?

¹⁰כה אמר סנחריב מלך אשור על מה אתם בטחים וישבים במצור בירושלם׃

¹¹Doth not Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

¹¹Ezéchias ne vous abuse-t-il pas pour vous livrer à la mort par la famine et par la soif, quand il dit: L'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous sauvera de la main du roi d'Assyrie?

¹¹הלא יחזקיהו מסית אתכם לתת אתכם למות ברעב ובצמא לאמר יהוה אלהינו יצילנו מכף מלך אשור׃

¹²Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and upon it shall ye burn incense?

¹²N'est-ce pas lui, Ezéchias, qui a fait disparaître les hauts lieux et les autels de l'Eternel, et qui a donné cet ordre à Juda et à Jérusalem: Vous vous prosternerez devant un seul autel, et vous y offrirez les parfums?

¹²הלא הוא יחזקיהו הסיר את במתיו ואת מזבחתיו ויאמר ליהודה ולירושלם לאמר לפני מזבח אחד תשתחוו ועליו תקטירו׃

¹³Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any wise able to deliver their land out of my hand?

¹³Ne savez-vous pas ce que nous avons fait, moi et mes pères, à tous les peuples des autres pays? Les dieux des nations de ces pays ont-ils pu délivrer leurs pays de ma main?

¹³הלא תדעו מה עשיתי אני ואבותי לכל עמי הארצות היכול יכלו אלהי גוי הארצות להציל את ארצם מידי׃

¹⁴Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?

¹⁴Parmi tous les dieux de ces nations que mes pères ont exterminées, quel est celui qui a pu délivrer son peuple de ma main, pour que votre Dieu puisse vous délivrer de ma main?

¹⁴מי בכל אלהי הגוים האלה אשר החרימו אבותי אשר יכול להציל את עמו מידי כי יוכל אלהיכם להציל אתכם מידי׃

¹⁵Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you after this manner, neither believe ye him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?

¹⁵Qu'Ezéchias ne vous séduise donc point et qu'il ne vous abuse point ainsi; ne vous fiez pas à lui! Car aucun dieu d'aucune nation ni d'aucun royaume n'a pu délivrer son peuple de ma main et de la main de mes pères: combien moins votre Dieu vous délivrera-t-il de ma main?

¹⁵ועתה אל ישיא אתכם חזקיהו ואל יסית אתכם כזאת ואל תאמינו לו כי לא יוכל כל אלוה כל גוי וממלכה להציל עמו מידי ומיד אבותי אף כי אלהיכם לא יצילו אתכם מידי׃

¹⁶And his servants spake yet more against Jehovah God, and against his servant Hezekiah.

¹⁶Les serviteurs de Sanchérib parlèrent encore contre l'Eternel Dieu, et contre Ezéchias, son serviteur.

¹⁶ועוד דברו עבדיו על יהוה האלהים ועל יחזקיהו עבדו׃

¹⁷He wrote also letters, to rail on Jehovah, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.

¹⁷Et il envoya une lettre insultante pour l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, en s'exprimant ainsi contre lui: De même que les dieux des nations des autres pays n'ont pu délivrer leur peuple de ma main, de même le Dieu d'Ezéchias ne délivrera pas son peuple de ma main.

¹⁷וספרים כתב לחרף ליהוה אלהי ישראל ולאמר עליו לאמר כאלהי גוי הארצות אשר לא הצילו עמם מידי כן לא יציל אלהי יחזקיהו עמו מידי׃

¹⁸And they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

¹⁸Les serviteurs de Sanchérib crièrent à haute voix en langue judaïque, afin de jeter l'effroi et l'épouvante parmi le peuple de Jérusalem qui était sur la muraille, et de pouvoir ainsi s'emparer de la ville.

¹⁸ויקראו בקול גדול יהודית על עם ירושלם אשר על החומה ליראם ולבהלם למען ילכדו את העיר׃

¹⁹And they spake of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.

¹⁹Ils parlèrent du Dieu de Jérusalem comme des dieux des peuples de la terre, ouvrages de mains d'homme.

¹⁹וידברו אל אלהי ירושלם כעל אלהי עמי הארץ מעשה ידי האדם׃

²⁰And Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.

²⁰Le roi Ezéchias et le prophète Esaïe, fils d'Amots, se mirent à prier à ce sujet, et ils crièrent au ciel.

²⁰ויתפלל יחזקיהו המלך וישעיהו בן אמוץ הנביא על זאת ויזעקו השמים׃

²¹And Jehovah sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth from his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

²¹Alors l'Eternel envoya un ange, qui extermina dans le camp du roi d'Assyrie tous les vaillants hommes, les princes et les chefs. Et le roi confus retourna dans son pays. Il entra dans la maison de son dieu, et là ceux qui étaient sortis de ses entrailles le firent tomber par l'épée.

²¹וישלח יהוה מלאך ויכחד כל גבור חיל ונגיד ושר במחנה מלך אשור וישב בבשת פנים לארצו ויבא בית אלהיו ומיציאו מעיו שם הפילהו בחרב׃

²²Thus Jehovah saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all [others], and guided them on every side.

²²Ainsi l'Eternel sauva Ezéchias et les habitants de Jérusalem de la main de Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, et de la main de tous, et il les protégea contre ceux qui les entouraient.

²²ויושע יהוה את יחזקיהו ואת ישבי ירושלם מיד סנחריב מלך אשור ומיד כל וינהלם מסביב׃

²³And many brought gifts unto Jehovah to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

²³Beaucoup de gens apportèrent dans Jérusalem des offrandes à l'Eternel, et de riches présents à Ezéchias, roi de Juda, qui depuis lors fut élevé aux yeux de toutes les nations.

²³ורבים מביאים מנחה ליהוה לירושלם ומגדנות ליחזקיהו מלך יהודה וינשא לעיני כל הגוים מאחרי כן׃

²⁴In those days Hezekiah was sick even unto death: and he prayed unto Jehovah; and he spake unto him, and gave him a sign.

²⁴En ce temps-là, Ezéchias fut malade à la mort. Il fit une prière à l'Eternel; et l'Eternel lui adressa la parole, et lui accorda un prodige.

²⁴בימים ההם חלה יחזקיהו עד למות ויתפלל אל יהוה ויאמר לו ומופת נתן לו׃

²⁵But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

²⁵Mais Ezéchias ne répondit point au bienfait qu'il avait reçu, car son coeur s'éleva; et la colère de l'Eternel fut sur lui, sur Juda et sur Jérusalem.

²⁵ולא כגמל עליו השיב יחזקיהו כי גבה לבו ויהי עליו קצף ועל יהודה וירושלם׃

²⁶Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Jehovah came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

²⁶Alors Ezéchias, du sein de son orgueil, s'humilia avec les habitants de Jérusalem, et la colère de l'Eternel ne vint pas sur eux pendant la vie d'Ezéchias.

²⁶ויכנע יחזקיהו בגבה לבו הוא וישבי ירושלם ולא בא עליהם קצף יהוה בימי יחזקיהו׃

²⁷And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honor: and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of goodly vessels;

²⁷Ezéchias eut beaucoup de richesses et de gloire. Il se fit des trésors d'argent, d'or, de pierres précieuses, d'aromates, de boucliers et de tous les objets qu'on peut désirer;

²⁷ויהי ליחזקיהו עשר וכבוד הרבה מאד ואצרות עשה לו לכסף ולזהב ולאבן יקרה ולבשמים ולמגנים ולכל כלי חמדה׃

²⁸store-houses also for the increase of grain and new wine and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and flocks in folds.

²⁸des magasins pour les produits en blé, en moût et en huile, des crèches pour toute espèce de bétail, et des étables pour les troupeaux.

²⁸ומסכנות לתבואת דגן ותירוש ויצהר וארות לכל בהמה ובהמה ועדרים לאורות׃

²⁹Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much substance.

²⁹Il se bâtit des villes, et il eut en abondance des troupeaux de menu et de gros bétail; car Dieu lui avait donné des biens considérables.

²⁹וערים עשה לו ומקנה צאן ובקר לרב כי נתן לו אלהים רכוש רב מאד׃

³⁰This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

³⁰Ce fut aussi lui, Ezéchias, qui boucha l'issue supérieure des eaux de Guihon, et les conduisit en bas vers l'occident de la cité de David. Ezéchias réussit dans toutes ses entreprises.

³⁰והוא יחזקיהו סתם את מוצא מימי גיחון העליון ויישרם למטה מערבה לעיר דויד ויצלח יחזקיהו בכל מעשהו׃

³¹Howbeit in [the business of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

³¹Cependant, lorsque les chefs de Babylone envoyèrent des messagers auprès de lui pour s'informer du prodige qui avait eu lieu dans le pays, Dieu l'abandonna pour l'éprouver, afin de connaître tout ce qui était dans son coeur.

³¹וכן במליצי שרי בבל המשלחים עליו לדרש המופת אשר היה בארץ עזבו האלהים לנסותו לדעת כל בלבבו׃

³²Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

³²Le reste des actions d'Ezéchias, et ses oeuvres de piété, cela est écrit dans la vision du prophète Esaïe, fils d'Amots, dans le livre des rois de Juda et d'Israël.

³²ויתר דברי יחזקיהו וחסדיו הנם כתובים בחזון ישעיהו בן אמוץ הנביא על ספר מלכי יהודה וישראל׃

³³And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

³³Ezéchias se coucha avec ses pères, et on l'enterra dans le lieu le plus élevé des sépulcres des fils de David; tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem lui rendirent honneur à sa mort. Et Manassé, son fils, régna à sa place.

³³וישכב יחזקיהו עם אבתיו ויקברהו במעלה קברי בני דויד וכבוד עשו לו במותו כל יהודה וישבי ירושלם וימלך מנשה בנו תחתיו׃
