¹Then spake Solomon, Jehovah hath said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

¹Alors Salomon dit: L'Eternel veut habiter dans l'obscurité!

¹אז אמר שלמה יהוה אמר לשכון בערפל׃

²But I have built thee a house of habitation, and a place for thee to dwell in for ever.

²Et moi, j'ai bâti une maison qui sera ta demeure, un lieu où tu résideras éternellement!

²ואני בניתי בית זבל לך ומכון לשבתך עולמים׃

³And the king turned his face, and blessed all the assembly of Israel: and all the assembly of Israel stood.

³Le roi tourna son visage, et bénit toute l'assemblée d'Israël; et toute l'assemblée d'Israël était debout.

³ויסב המלך את פניו ויברך את כל קהל ישראל וכל קהל ישראל עומד׃

⁴And he said, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who spake with his mouth unto David my father, and hath with his hands fulfilled it, saying,

⁴Et il dit: Béni soit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, qui a parlé de sa bouche à David, mon père, et qui accomplit par sa puissance ce qu'il avait déclaré en disant:

⁴ויאמר ברוך יהוה אלהי ישראל אשר דבר בפיו את דויד אבי ובידיו מלא לאמר׃

⁵Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any man to be prince over my people Israel:

⁵Depuis le jour où j'ai fait sortir mon peuple du pays d'Egypte, je n'ai point choisi de ville parmi toutes les tribus d'Israël pour qu'il y fût bâti une maison où résidât mon nom, et je n'ai point choisi d'homme pour qu'il fût chef de mon peuple d'Israël;

⁵מן היום אשר הוצאתי את עמי מארץ מצרים לא בחרתי בעיר מכל שבטי ישראל לבנות בית להיות שמי שם ולא בחרתי באיש להיות נגיד על עמי ישראל׃

⁶but I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel.

⁶mais j'ai choisi Jérusalem pour que mon nom y résidât, et j'ai choisi David pour qu'il régnât sur mon peuple d'Israël!

⁶ואבחר בירושלם להיות שמי שם ואבחר בדויד להיות על עמי ישראל׃

⁷Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

⁷David, mon père, avait l'intention de bâtir une maison au nom de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.

⁷ויהי עם לבב דויד אבי לבנות בית לשם יהוה אלהי ישראל׃

⁸But Jehovah said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thy heart to build a house for my name, thou didst well that it was in thy heart:

⁸Et l'Eternel dit à David, mon père: Puisque tu as eu l'intention de bâtir une maison à mon nom, tu as bien fait d'avoir eu cette intention.

⁸ויאמר יהוה אל דויד אבי יען אשר היה עם לבבך לבנות בית לשמי הטיבות כי היה עם לבבך׃

⁹nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house for my name.

⁹Seulement, ce ne sera pas toi qui bâtiras la maison; mais ce sera ton fils, sorti de tes entrailles, qui bâtira la maison à mon nom.

⁹רק אתה לא תבנה הבית כי בנך היוצא מחלציך הוא יבנה הבית לשמי׃

¹⁰And Jehovah hath performed his word that he spake; for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as Jehovah promised, and have built the house for the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

¹⁰L'Eternel a accompli la parole qu'il avait prononcée. Je me suis élevé à la place de David, mon père, et je me suis assis sur le trône d'Israël, comme l'avait annoncé l'Eternel, et j'ai bâti la maison au nom de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.

¹⁰ויקם יהוה את דברו אשר דבר ואקום תחת דויד אבי ואשב על כסא ישראל כאשר דבר יהוה ואבנה הבית לשם יהוה אלהי ישראל׃

¹¹And there have I set the ark, wherein is the covenant of Jehovah, which he made with the children of Israel.

¹¹J'y ai placé l'arche où est l'alliance de l'Eternel, l'alliance qu'il a faite avec les enfants d'Israël.

¹¹ואשים שם את הארון אשר שם ברית יהוה אשר כרת עם בני ישראל׃

¹²And he stood before the altar of Jehovah in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands

¹²Salomon se plaça devant l'autel de l'Eternel, en face de toute l'assemblée d'Israël, et il étendit ses mains.

¹²ויעמד לפני מזבח יהוה נגד כל קהל ישראל ויפרש כפיו׃

¹³(for Solomon had made a brazen scaffold, five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court; and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knees before all the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven;)

¹³Car Salomon avait fait une tribune d'airain, et l'avait mise au milieu du parvis; elle était longue de cinq coudées, large de cinq coudées, et haute de trois coudées; il s'y plaça, se mit à genoux en face de toute l'assemblée d'Israël, et étendit ses mains vers le ciel.

¹³כי עשה שלמה כיור נחשת ויתנהו בתוך העזרה חמש אמות ארכו וחמש אמות רחבו ואמות שלוש קומתו ויעמד עליו ויברך על ברכיו נגד כל קהל ישראל ויפרש כפיו השמימה׃

¹⁴and he said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven, or on earth; who keepest covenant and lovingkindness with thy servants, that walk before thee with all their heart;

¹⁴Et il dit: O Eternel, Dieu d'Israël! Il n'y a point de Dieu semblable à toi, dans les cieux et sur la terre: tu gardes l'alliance et la miséricorde envers tes serviteurs qui marchent en ta présence de tout leur coeur!

¹⁴ויאמר יהוה אלהי ישראל אין כמוך אלהים בשמים ובארץ שמר הברית והחסד לעבדיך ההלכים לפניך בכל לבם׃

¹⁵who hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou didst promise him: yea, thou spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thy hand, as it is this day.

¹⁵Ainsi tu as tenu parole à ton serviteur David, mon père; et ce que tu as déclaré de ta bouche, tu l'accomplis en ce jour par ta puissance.

¹⁵אשר שמרת לעבדך דויד אבי את אשר דברת לו ותדבר בפיך ובידך מלאת כיום הזה׃

¹⁶Now therefore, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only thy children take heed to their way, to walk in my law as thou hast walked before me.

¹⁶Maintenant, Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, observe la promesse que tu as faite à David, mon père, en disant: Tu ne manqueras jamais devant moi d'un successeur assis sur le trône d'Israël, pourvu que tes fils prennent garde à leur voie et qu'ils marchent dans ma loi comme tu as marché en ma présence.

¹⁶ועתה יהוה אלהי ישראל שמר לעבדך דויד אבי את אשר דברת לו לאמר לא יכרת לך איש מלפני יושב על כסא ישראל רק אם ישמרו בניך את דרכם ללכת בתורתי כאשר הלכת לפני׃

¹⁷Now therefore, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, let thy word be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David.

¹⁷Qu'elle s'accomplisse donc, Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, la promesse que tu as faite à ton serviteur David!

¹⁷ועתה יהוה אלהי ישראל יאמן דברך אשר דברת לעבדך לדויד׃

¹⁸But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have builded!

¹⁸Mais quoi! Dieu habiterait-il véritablement avec l'homme sur la terre? Voici, les cieux et les cieux des cieux ne peuvent te contenir: combien moins cette maison que j'ai bâtie!

¹⁸כי האמנם ישב אלהים את האדם על הארץ הנה שמים ושמי השמים לא יכלכלוך אף כי הבית הזה אשר בניתי׃

¹⁹Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O Jehovah my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee;

¹⁹Toutefois, Eternel mon Dieu, sois attentif à la prière de ton serviteur et à sa supplication; écoute le cri et la prière que t'adresse ton serviteur.

¹⁹ופנית אל תפלת עבדך ואל תחנתו יהוה אלהי לשמע אל הרנה ואל התפלה אשר עבדך מתפלל לפניך׃

²⁰that thine eyes may be open toward this house day and night, even toward the place whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name there; to hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall pray toward this place.

²⁰Que tes yeux soient jour et nuit ouverts sur cette maison, sur le lieu dont tu as dit que là serait ton nom! Ecoute la prière que ton serviteur fait en ce lieu.

²⁰להיות עיניך פתחות אל הבית הזה יומם ולילה אל המקום אשר אמרת לשום שמך שם לשמוע אל התפלה אשר יתפלל עבדך אל המקום הזה׃

²¹And hearken thou to the supplications of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: yea, hear thou from thy dwelling-place, even from heaven; and when thou hearest forgive.

²¹Daigne exaucer les supplications de ton serviteur et de ton peuple d'Israël, lorsqu'ils prieront en ce lieu! Exauce du lieu de ta demeure, des cieux, exauce et pardonne!

²¹ושמעת אל תחנוני עבדך ועמך ישראל אשר יתפללו אל המקום הזה ואתה תשמע ממקום שבתך מן השמים ושמעת וסלחת׃

²²If a man sin against his neighbor, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and he come [and] swear before thine altar in this house;

²²Si quelqu'un pèche contre son prochain et qu'on lui impose un serment pour le faire jurer, et s'il vient jurer devant ton autel, dans cette maison,

²²אם יחטא איש לרעהו ונשא בו אלה להאלתו ובא אלה לפני מזבחך בבית הזה׃

²³then hear thou from heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, requiting the wicked, to bring his way upon his own head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.

²³coute-le des cieux, agis, et juge tes serviteurs; condamne le coupable, et fais retomber sa conduite sur sa tête, rends justice à l'innocent, et traite-le selon son innocence!

²³ואתה תשמע מן השמים ועשית ושפטת את עבדיך להשיב לרשע לתת דרכו בראשו ולהצדיק צדיק לתת לו כצדקתו׃

²⁴And if thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again and confess thy name, and pray and make supplication before thee in this house;

²⁴Quand ton peuple d'Israël sera battu par l'ennemi, pour avoir péché contre toi; s'ils reviennent à toi et rendent gloire à ton nom, s'ils t'adressent des prières et des supplications dans cette maison,

²⁴ואם ינגף עמך ישראל לפני אויב כי יחטאו לך ושבו והודו את שמך והתפללו והתחננו לפניך בבית הזה׃

²⁵then hear thou from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest to them and to their fathers.

²⁵exauce-les des cieux, pardonne le péché de ton peuple d'Israël, et ramène-les dans le pays que tu as donné à eux et à leurs pères!

²⁵ואתה תשמע מן השמים וסלחת לחטאת עמך ישראל והשיבותם אל האדמה אשר נתתה להם ולאבתיהם׃

²⁶When the heavens are shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou dost afflict them:

²⁶Quand le ciel sera fermé et qu'il n'y aura point de pluie, à cause de leurs péchés contre toi; s'ils prient dans ce lieu et rendent gloire à ton nom, et s'ils se détournent de leurs péchés, parce que tu les auras châtiés;

²⁶בהעצר השמים ולא יהיה מטר כי יחטאו לך והתפללו אל המקום הזה והודו את שמך מחטאתם ישובון כי תענם׃

²⁷then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou teachest them the good way wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.

²⁷exauce-les des cieux, pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs et de ton peuple d'Israël, à qui tu enseigneras la bonne voie dans laquelle ils doivent marcher, et fais venir la pluie sur la terre que tu as donnée pour héritage à ton peuple!

²⁷ואתה תשמע השמים וסלחת לחטאת עבדיך ועמך ישראל כי תורם אל הדרך הטובה אשר ילכו בה ונתתה מטר על ארצך אשר נתתה לעמך לנחלה׃

²⁸If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, if there be blasting or mildew, locust or caterpillar; if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague or whatsoever sickness there be;

²⁸Quand la famine, la peste, la rouille et la nielle, les sauterelles d'une espèce ou d'une autre, seront dans le pays, quand l'ennemi assiégera ton peuple dans son pays, dans ses portes, quand il y aura des fléaux ou des maladies quelconques;

²⁸רעב כי יהיה בארץ דבר כי יהיה שדפון וירקון ארבה וחסיל כי יהיה כי יצר לו אויביו בארץ שעריו כל נגע וכל מחלה׃

²⁹what prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, who shall know every man his own plague and his own sorrow, and shall spread forth his hands toward this house:

²⁹si un homme, si tout ton peuple d'Israël fait entendre des prières et des supplications, et que chacun reconnaisse sa plaie et sa douleur et étende les mains vers cette maison,

²⁹כל תפלה כל תחנה אשר יהיה לכל האדם ולכל עמך ישראל אשר ידעו איש נגעו ומכאבו ופרש כפיו אל הבית הזה׃

³⁰then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling-place and forgive, and render unto every man according to all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of the children of men;)

³⁰exauce-le des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, et pardonne; rends à chacun selon ses voies, toi qui connais le coeur de chacun, car seul tu connais le coeur des enfants des hommes,

³⁰ואתה תשמע מן השמים מכון שבתך וסלחת ונתתה לאיש ככל דרכיו אשר תדע את לבבו כי אתה לבדך ידעת את לבב בני האדם׃

³¹that they may fear thee, to walk in thy ways, so long as they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers.

³¹et ils te craindront pour marcher dans tes voies tout le temps qu'ils vivront dans le pays que tu as donné à nos pères!

³¹למען ייראוך ללכת בדרכיך כל הימים אשר הם חיים על פני האדמה אשר נתתה לאבתינו׃

³²Moreover concerning the foreigner, that is not of thy people Israel, when he shall come from a far country for thy great name's sake, and thy mighty hand, and thine outstretched arm; when they shall come and pray toward this house:

³²Quand l'étranger, qui n'est pas de ton peuple d'Israël, viendra d'un pays lointain, à cause de ton grand nom, de ta main forte et de ton bras étendu, quand il viendra prier dans cette maison,

³²וגם אל הנכרי אשר לא מעמך ישראל הוא ובא מארץ רחוקה למען שמך הגדול וידך החזקה וזרועך הנטויה ובאו והתפללו אל הבית הזה׃

³³then hear thou from heaven, even from thy dwelling-place, and do according to all that the foreigner calleth to thee for; that all the peoples of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as doth thy people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.

³³exauce-le des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, et accorde à cet étranger tout ce qu'il te demandera, afin que tous les peuples de la terre connaissent ton nom pour te craindre, comme ton peuple d'Israël, et sachent que ton nom est invoqué sur cette maison que j'ai bâtie!

³³ואתה תשמע מן השמים ממכון שבתך ועשית ככל אשר יקרא אליך הנכרי למען ידעו כל עמי הארץ את שמך וליראה אתך כעמך ישראל ולדעת כי שמך נקרא על הבית הזה אשר בניתי׃

³⁴If thy people go out to battle against their enemies, by whatsoever way thou shalt send them, and they pray unto thee toward this city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name;

³⁴Quand ton peuple sortira pour combattre ses ennemis, en suivant la voie que tu lui auras prescrite; s'ils t'adressent des prières, les regards tournés vers cette ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j'ai bâtie en ton nom,

³⁴כי יצא עמך למלחמה על אויביו בדרך אשר תשלחם והתפללו אליך דרך העיר הזאת אשר בחרת בה והבית אשר בניתי לשמך׃

³⁵then hear thou from heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.

³⁵exauce des cieux leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit!

³⁵ושמעת מן השמים את תפלתם ואת תחנתם ועשית משפטם׃

³⁶If they sin against thee (for there is no man that sinneth not), and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive unto a land far off or near;

³⁶Quand ils pécheront contre toi, car il n'y a point d'homme qui ne pèche, quand tu seras irrité contre eux et que tu les livreras à l'ennemi, qui les emmènera captifs dans un pays lointain ou rapproché;

³⁶כי יחטאו לך כי אין אדם אשר לא יחטא ואנפת בם ונתתם לפני אויב ושבום שוביהם אל ארץ רחוקה או קרובה׃

³⁷yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done perversely, and have dealt wickedly;

³⁷s'ils rentrent en eux-mêmes dans le pays où ils seront captifs, s'ils reviennent à toi et t'adressent des supplications dans le pays de leur captivité, et qu'ils disent: Nous avons péché, nous avons commis des iniquités, nous avons fait le mal!

³⁷והשיבו אל לבבם בארץ אשר נשבו שם ושבו והתחננו אליך בארץ שבים לאמר חטאנו העוינו ורשענו׃

³⁸if they return unto thee with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, whither they have carried them captive, and pray toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, and the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house which I have built for thy name:

³⁸s'ils reviennent à toi de tout leur coeur et de toute leur âme, dans le pays de leur captivité où ils ont été emmenés captifs, s'ils t'adressent des prières, les regards tournés vers leur pays que tu as donné à leurs pères, vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j'ai bâtie à ton nom,

³⁸ושבו אליך בכל לבם ובכל נפשם בארץ שבים אשר שבו אתם והתפללו דרך ארצם אשר נתתה לאבותם והעיר אשר בחרת ולבית אשר בניתי לשמך׃

³⁹then hear thou from heaven, even from thy dwelling-place, their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive thy people who have sinned against thee.

³⁹exauce des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit; pardonne à ton peuple ses péchés contre toi!

³⁹ושמעת מן השמים ממכון שבתך את תפלתם ואת תחנתיהם ועשית משפטם וסלחת לעמך אשר חטאו לך׃

⁴⁰Now, O my God, let, I beseech thee, thine eyes be open, and let thine ears be attent, unto the prayer that is made in this place.

⁴⁰Maintenant, ô mon Dieu, que tes yeux soient ouverts, et que tes oreilles soient attentives à la prière faite en ce lieu!

⁴⁰עתה אלהי יהיו נא עיניך פתחות ואזניך קשבות לתפלת המקום הזה׃

⁴¹Now therefore arise, O Jehovah God, into thy resting-place, thou, and the ark of thy strength: let thy priests, O Jehovah God, be clothed with salvation, and let thy saints rejoice in goodness.

⁴¹Maintenant, Eternel Dieu, lève-toi, viens à ton lieu de repos, toi et l'arche de ta majesté! Que tes sacrificateurs, Eternel Dieu, soient revêtus de salut, et que tes bien-aimés jouissent du bonheur!

⁴¹ועתה קומה יהוה אלהים לנוחך אתה וארון עזך כהניך יהוה אלהים ילבשו תשועה וחסידיך ישמחו בטוב׃

⁴²O Jehovah God, turn not away the face of thine anointed: remember [thy] lovingkindnesses to David thy servant.

⁴²Eternel Dieu, ne repousse pas ton oint, souviens-toi des grâces accordées à David, ton serviteur!

⁴²יהוה אלהים אל תשב פני משיחיך זכרה לחסדי דויד עבדך׃
