¹But I determined this for myself, that I would not come again to you with sorrow.

¹Je résolus donc en moi-même de ne pas retourner chez vous dans la tristesse.

¹ואני גמרתי בלבי לבלתי שוב עוד אליכם בעצבת׃

²For if I make you sorry, who then is he that maketh me glad but he that is made sorry by me?

²Car si je vous attriste, qui peut me réjouir, sinon celui qui est attristé par moi?

²כי אם אני אעציבכם מי אפוא ישמחני בלתי אם הנעצב על ידי׃

³And I wrote this very thing, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is [the joy] of you all.

³J'ai écrit comme je l'ai fait pour ne pas éprouver, à mon arrivée, de la tristesse de la part de ceux qui devaient me donner de la joie, ayant en vous tous cette confiance que ma joie est la vôtre à tous.

³וזאת כתבתי לכם פן יהיה לי בבואי עצב מאלה אשר היה לי לשמח עליהם ובטח אני בכלכם כי שמחתי היא שמחת כלכם׃

⁴For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be made sorry, but that ye might know the love that I have more abundantly unto you.

⁴C'est dans une grande affliction, le coeur angoissé, et avec beaucoup de larmes, que je vous ai écrit, non pas afin que vous fussiez attristés, mais afin que vous connussiez l'amour extrême que j'ai pour vous.

⁴כי מרב צרת לבי ומצוקה כתבתי לכם ובדמעות הרבה ולא להעציבכם רק למען תדעו האהבה היתרה אשר אהבתי אתכם׃

⁵But if any hath caused sorrow, he hath caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I press not too heavily) to you all.

⁵Si quelqu'un a été une cause de tristesse, ce n'est pas moi qu'il a attristé, c'est vous tous, du moins en partie, pour ne rien exagérer.

⁵ואם יש איש אשר העציב לא אתי העציב אלא כלכם פן אפריז על המדה העציב למקצת׃

⁶Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was [inflicted] by the many;

⁶Il suffit pour cet homme du châtiment qui lui a été infligé par le plus grand nombre,

⁶ודי לאיש כמהו התוכחה ההיא אמת הרבים׃

⁷so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow.

⁷en sorte que vous devez bien plutôt lui pardonner et le consoler, de peur qu'il ne soit accablé par une tristesse excessive.

⁷ועתה להפך תסלחו ותנחמו כדי שלא יתבלע האיש בגדל העצבון׃

⁸Wherefore I beseech you to confirm [your] love toward him.

⁸Je vous exhorte donc à faire acte de charité envers lui;

⁸על כן אבקשה מכם לגמל עליו גמולת אהבה׃

⁹For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.

⁹car je vous ai écrit aussi dans le but de connaître, en vous mettant à l'épreuve, si vous êtes obéissants en toutes choses.

⁹כי לבעבור זאת גם כתבתי למען אדע את תמתכם אם בכל תשמעון׃

¹⁰But to whom ye forgive anything, I [forgive] also: for what I also have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, for your sakes [have I forgiven it] in the presence of Christ;

¹⁰Or, à qui vous pardonnez, je pardonne aussi; et ce que j'ai pardonné, si j'ai pardonné quelque chose, c'est à cause de vous, en présence de Christ,

¹⁰ואיש אשר תסלחו לו אסלח לו גם אני כי גם אנכי אם סלחתי דבר סלחתי לו למענכם בפני המשיח׃

¹¹that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

¹¹afin de ne pas laisser à Satan l'avantage sur nous, car nous n'ignorons pas ses desseins.

¹¹פן יונה אתנו השטן כי לא נעלמו מאתנו מזמותיו׃

¹²Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ, and when a door was opened unto me in the Lord,

¹²Au reste, lorsque je fus arrivé à Troas pour l'Evangile de Christ, quoique le Seigneur m'y eût ouvert une porte,

¹²ואני בבאי לטרואס על דבר בשורת המשיח אף כי נפתח לי פתח באדנינו׃

¹³I had no relief for my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went forth into Macedonia.

¹³je n'eus point de repos d'esprit, parce que je ne trouvai pas Tite, mon frère; c'est pourquoi, ayant pris congé d'eux, je partis pour la Macédoine.

¹³לא היתה רוחה לרוחי על אשר לא מצאתי שם את טיטוס אחי ואני נפטרתי מהם ויצאתי ללכת אל מקדוניא׃

¹⁴But thanks be unto God, who always leadeth us in triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest through us the savor of his knowledge in every place.

¹⁴Grâces soient rendues à Dieu, qui nous fait toujours triompher en Christ, et qui répand par nous en tout lieu l'odeur de sa connaissance!

¹⁴אבל תודות לאלהים הנתן לנו בכל עת נצחון במשיח ומפיץ על ידינו את ריח דעתו בכל מקום׃

¹⁵For we are a sweet savor of Christ unto God, in them that are saved, and in them that perish;

¹⁵Nous sommes, en effet, pour Dieu la bonne odeur de Christ, parmi ceux qui sont sauvés et parmi ceux qui périssent:

¹⁵כי ריח ניחח המשיח אנחנו לאלהים גם בתוך הנושעים וגם בתוך האבדים׃

¹⁶to the one a savor from death unto death; to the other a savor from life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

¹⁶aux uns, une odeur de mort, donnant la mort; aux autres, une odeur de vie, donnant la vie. Et qui est suffisant pour ces choses? -

¹⁶לאלה ריח מות למות ולאלה ריח חיים לחיים ומי זה ראוי לכך׃

¹⁷For we are not as the many, corrupting the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, speak we in Christ.

¹⁷Car nous ne falsifions point la parole de Dieu, comme font plusieurs; mais c'est avec sincérité, mais c'est de la part de Dieu, que nous parlons en Christ devant Dieu.

¹⁷כי אנחנו איננו כמו הרבים העשים סחורה בדבר האלהים כי אם מתוך ישר לבב ומאלהים לפני אלהים נדבר במשיח׃
