¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

¹ויהי אחרי עברם באמפפוליס ובאפלוינא ויבאו אל תסלוניקי אשר שם בית כנסת היהודים׃

²and Paul, as his custom was, went in unto them, and for three sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

²Paul y entra, selon sa coutume. Pendant trois sabbats, il discuta avec eux, d'après les Ecritures,

²ופולוס נכנס אליהם כמשפטו ושלש שבתות דבר עמהם בדברי הכתובים׃

³opening and alleging that it behooved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom, [said he,] I proclaim unto you, is the Christ.

³expliquant et établissant que le Christ devait souffrir et ressusciter des morts. Et Jésus que je vous annonce, disait-il, c'est lui qui est le Christ.

³פתוח והוכח להם כי צריך היה אשר יענה המשיח ויקום מן המתים וכי זה הוא המשיח ישוע אשר אני מגיד לכם׃

⁴And some of them were persuaded, and consorted with Paul and Silas, and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

⁴Quelques-uns d'entre eux furent persuadés, et se joignirent à Paul et à Silas, ainsi qu'une grande multitude de Grecs craignant Dieu, et beaucoup de femmes de qualité.

⁴ויאמינו מקצתם ויספחו על פולוס וסילא וגם יראי אלהים מן היונים לרב וגם נשים חשובות מספר לא מעט׃

⁵But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people.

⁵Mais les Juifs, jaloux prirent avec eux quelques méchants hommes de la populace, provoquèrent des attroupements, et répandirent l'agitation dans la ville. Ils se portèrent à la maison de Jason, et ils cherchèrent Paul et Silas, pour les amener vers le peuple.

⁵ויקנאו הסוררים שביהודים ויקחו להם אנשי בליעל מבטלני השוק ויקבצו המון ויהמו את העיר ויסבו על בית יסון ויבקשו להביאם חוצה אל העם׃

⁶And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

⁶Ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les magistrats de la ville, en criant: Ces gens, qui ont bouleversé le monde, sont aussi venus ici,

⁶וכאשר לא מצאו אותם סחבו את יסון ואנשים מן האחים לפני ראשי העיר ויצעקו לאמר הנה המדיחים את כל ישבי תבל באו גם הלום׃

⁷whom Jason hath received: and these all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, [one] Jesus.

⁷et Jason les a reçus. Ils agissent tous contre les édits de César, disant qu'il y a un autre roi, Jésus.

⁷ויסון אסף אתם אל ביתו והם כלם עשים נגד דתי הקיסר באמרם כי יש מלך אחר והוא ישוע׃

⁸And they troubled the multitude and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

⁸Par ces paroles ils émurent la foule et les magistrats,

⁸ויחרידו את העם ואת ראשי העיר אשר שמעו את זאת׃

⁹And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

⁹qui ne laissèrent aller Jason et les autres qu'après avoir obtenu d'eux une caution.

⁹ויקחו ערבון מידי יסון ומידי האחרים ואחרי כן פטרום׃

¹⁰And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Beroea: who when they were come thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

¹⁰Aussitôt les frères firent partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés, ils entrèrent dans la synagogue des Juifs.

¹⁰והאחים מהרו לשלח את פולוס ואת סילא לילה לברואה והם בבאם שמה הלכו לבית כנסת היהודים׃

¹¹Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so.

¹¹Ces Juifs avaient des sentiments plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique; ils reçurent la parole avec beaucoup d'empressement, et ils examinaient chaque jour les Ecritures, pour voir si ce qu'on leur disait était exact.

¹¹ואלה היו נדיבים מאנשי תסלוניקי ויקבלו את הדבר בכל לב וידרשו בכתובים יום יום לדעת אם כן הוא הדבר׃

¹²Many of them therefore believed; also of the Greek women of honorable estate, and of men, not a few.

¹²Plusieurs d'entre eux crurent, ainsi que beaucoup de femmes grecques de distinction, et beaucoup d'hommes.

¹²ויאמינו הרבה מהם וגם מן הנשים החשובות היוניות ומן האנשים לא מעט׃

¹³But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed of Paul at Beroea also, they came thither likewise, stirring up and troubling the multitudes.

¹³Mais, quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que Paul annonçait aussi à Bérée la parole de Dieu, ils vinrent y agiter la foule.

¹³ויהי כאשר שמעו היהודים אשר מתסלוניקי כי מגיד פולוס את דבר אלהים גם בברואה ויבאו ויעררו את העם גם שמה׃

¹⁴And then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul to go as far as to the sea: and Silas and Timothy abode there still.

¹⁴Alors les frères firent aussitôt partir Paul du côté de la mer; Silas et Timothée restèrent à Bérée.

¹⁴וימהרו האחים וישלחו את פולוס ללכת עד הים וסילא וטימותיוס נשארו שם׃

¹⁵But they that conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timothy that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.

¹⁵Ceux qui accompagnaient Paul le conduisirent jusqu'à Athènes. Puis ils s'en retournèrent, chargés de transmettre à Silas et à Timothée l'ordre de le rejoindre au plus tôt.

¹⁵והמלוים את פולוס הוליכהו עד אתינס ויקבלו מצותו אל סילא וטימותיוס כי בוא יבאו אליו במהרה וילכו׃

¹⁶Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he beheld the city full of idols.

¹⁶Comme Paul les attendait à Athènes, il sentait au dedans de lui son esprit s'irriter, à la vue de cette ville pleine d'idoles.

¹⁶ויהי באתינס ופולוס מהכה להם ותתחמץ רוחו בקרבו בראתו את העיר מלאה אלילים׃

¹⁷So he reasoned in the synagogue with Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with them that met him.

¹⁷Il s'entretenait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et les hommes craignant Dieu, et sur la place publique chaque jour avec ceux qu'il rencontrait.

¹⁷על כן בבית הכנסת דבר עם היהודים ועם יראי אלהים ובשוק יום יום עם הנקרים אליו׃

¹⁸And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

¹⁸Quelques philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens se mirent à parler avec lui. Et les uns disaient: Que veut dire ce discoureur? D'autres, l'entendant annoncer Jésus et la résurrection, disaient: Il semble qu'il annonce des divinités étrangères.

¹⁸וגם מקצת הפילוסופים מתלמידי אפיקורוס ומחברת האסטוא התגרו בו ויש אשר אמרו מה יאמר המפטפט הלז ואחרים אמרים כפי הנראה הוא מגיד אלהי נכר יען כי בשר אתם את ישוע ואת התחיה׃

¹⁹And they took hold of him, and brought him unto the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by thee?

¹⁹Alors ils le prirent, et le menèrent à l'Aréopage, en disant: Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu enseignes?

¹⁹ויאחזוהו ויביאהו אל גבעת המשפט הנקראה בשם אריופגוס ויאמרו הנוכל לדעת מה היא זו התורה החדשה אשר אתה משמיע׃

²⁰For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

²⁰Car tu nous fais entendre des choses étranges. Nous voudrions donc savoir ce que cela peut être.

²⁰כי דברים זרים אתה מביא באזנינו והננו חפצים לדעת מה ענינם׃

²¹(Now all the Athenians and the strangers sojourning there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.)

²¹Or, tous les Athéniens et les étrangers demeurant à Athènes ne passaient leur temps qu'à dire ou à écouter des nouvelles.

²¹כי האתיניים כלם וגם הנכרים הגרים שם לא חשו לדבר אחר כי אם לספר או לשמע חדשות׃

²²And Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus, and said, Ye men of Athens, in all things, I perceive that ye are very religious.

²²Paul, debout au milieu de l'Aréopage, dit: Hommes Athéniens, je vous trouve à tous égards extrêmement religieux.

²²ויעמד פולוס בתוך ועד השפטים ויאמר אנשי אתינס הנני ראה בכל כי יראי אלים אתם מאד׃

²³For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. What therefore ye worship in ignorance, this I set forth unto you.

²³Car, en parcourant votre ville et en considérant les objets de votre dévotion, j'ai même découvert un autel avec cette inscription: A un dieu inconnu! Ce que vous révérez sans le connaître, c'est ce que je vous annonce.

²³כי אני עבר ומתבונן אל עבדות אלהיכם ואמצא מזבח אחד כתוב עליו לאל הנעלם ועתה את אשר עבדתם ואינכם ידעים אתו אני מגיד לכם׃

²⁴The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

²⁴Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qui s'y trouve, étant le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habite point dans des temples faits de main d'homme;

²⁴האל אשר עשה את העולם וכל אשר בו לא ישכן בהיכלות מעשה ידים כי הוא אדון השמים והארץ׃

²⁵neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁵il n'est point servi par des mains humaines, comme s'il avait besoin de quoi que ce soit, lui qui donne à tous la vie, la respiration, et toutes choses.

²⁵גם לא ישרתוהו ידי בני אדם כאלו יצטרך לדבר כי הוא הנתן לכל חיים ונשמה וכל דבר׃

²⁶and he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined [their] appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation;

²⁶Il a fait que tous les hommes, sortis d'un seul sang, habitassent sur toute la surface de la terre, ayant déterminé la durée des temps et les bornes de leur demeure;

²⁶ויושב כל עממי בני אדם על כל פני האדמה מדם אחד ויצב מועדים קבועים וגבולת מושבם׃

²⁷that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us:

²⁷il a voulu qu'ils cherchassent le Seigneur, et qu'ils s'efforçassent de le trouver en tâtonnant, bien qu'il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous,

²⁷למען יבקשו את האלהים אולי ימששהו וימצאהו אף כי איננו רחוק מכל אחד ממנו׃

²⁸for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

²⁸car en lui nous avons la vie, le mouvement, et l'être. C'est ce qu'ont dit aussi quelques-uns de vos poètes: De lui nous sommes la race...

²⁸כי בו אנחנו חיים ומתנועעים וקימים כאשר גם מקצת משורריכם אמרו אף ילידיו אנחנו׃

²⁹Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and device of man.

²⁹Ainsi donc, étant la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la divinité soit semblable à de l'or, à de l'argent, ou à de la pierre, sculptés par l'art et l'industrie de l'homme.

²⁹והנה בהיותנו ילידי האלהים לא נכון לנו לחשב כי האלהות תדמה לזהב או לכסף או לאבן מעשה חרש ומחשבת בני אדם׃

³⁰The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:

³⁰Dieu, sans tenir compte des temps d'ignorance, annonce maintenant à tous les hommes, en tous lieux, qu'ils aient à se repentir,

³⁰לכן עתה אחרי עבר אלהים על ימות הסכלות מצוה הוא את כל בני האדם בכל אפסי ארץ כי שוב ישובו׃

³¹inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

³¹parce qu'il a fixé un jour où il jugera le monde selon la justice, par l'homme qu'il a désigné, ce dont il a donné à tous une preuve certaine en le ressuscitant des morts...

³¹יען אשר שת יום לשפט תבל בצדק על ידי איש אשר הפקידו ויתן עדות נאמנה לכלם בהקימו אתו מן המתים׃

³²Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, We will hear thee concerning this yet again.

³²Lorsqu'ils entendirent parler de résurrection des morts, les uns se moquèrent, et les autres dirent: Nous t'entendrons là-dessus une autre fois.

³²וכאשר שמעו תחית מתים אלה הלעיגו לו ואלה אמרו על זאת נשמעך בעת אחרת׃

³³Thus Paul went out from among them.

³³Ainsi Paul se retira du milieu d'eux.

³³ובכן יצא פולוס מתוכם׃

³⁴But certain men clave unto him, and believed: among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

³⁴Quelques-uns néanmoins s'attachèrent à lui et crurent, Denys l'aréopagite, une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres avec eux.

³⁴ומקצתם דבקו בו ויאמינו ובהם דיונוסיוס מן השפטים של אריופגוס ואשה אחת שמה דמריס ועוד אחרים עמהם׃
