¹And when it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.

¹Lorsqu'il fut décidé que nous nous embarquerions pour l'Italie, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers à un centenier de la cohorte Auguste, nommé Julius.

¹וכאשר נגמר הדין כי נעבר באניה אל איטליא מסרו את פולוס ומקצת אסירים אחרים אל שר המאה לגדוד אגוסטוס ושמו יוליוס׃

²And embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail unto the places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

²Nous montâmes sur un navire d'Adramytte, qui devait côtoyer l'Asie, et nous partîmes, ayant avec nous Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique.

²ונרד אל אניה אדרמטית נכנים לבוא על פני חוף אסיא ונעבר הימה ויהי אתנו ארסטרכוס מוקדון מן תסלוניקי׃

³And the next day we touched at Sidon: and Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him leave to go unto his friends and refresh himself.

³Le jour suivant, nous abordâmes à Sidon; et Julius, qui traitait Paul avec bienveillance, lui permit d'aller chez ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins.

³וממחרת הגענו אל צידון ויוליוס עשה עם פולוס חסד וינח לו ללכת אל מידעיו להעזר בידם׃

⁴And putting to sea from thence, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

⁴Partis de là, nous longeâmes l'île de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.

⁴ונלך משם ונעבר בסביבות קפרוס כי הרוחות היו לנגדנו׃

⁵And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, [a city] of Lycia.

⁵Après avoir traversé la mer qui baigne la Cilicie et la Pamphylie, nous arrivâmes à Myra en Lycie.

⁵ונעבר את הים אשר לפני קיליקיא ופמפוליא ונבא אל מורא אשר בלוקיא׃

⁶And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy; and he put us therein.

⁶Et là, le centenier, ayant trouvé un navire d'Alexandrie qui allait en Italie, nous y fit monter.

⁶וימצא שם שר המאה אניה אלכסנדרית באה לאיטליא ויעבירנו לתוכה׃

⁷And when we had sailed slowly many days, and were come with difficulty over against Cnidus, the wind not further suffering us, we sailed under the lee of Crete, over against Salmone;

⁷Pendant plusieurs jours nous naviguâmes lentement, et ce ne fut pas sans difficulté que nous atteignîmes la hauteur de Cnide, où le vent ne nous permit pas d'aborder. Nous passâmes au-dessous de l'île de Crète, du côté de Salmone.

⁷והאניה הלכה בכבדות ימים רבים ואחרי אשר יגענו ובאנו אל מול קנידוס לא הניחנו הרוח לחתר אל היבשה ונעבר מצד לקריטי על פני הר סלמוני׃

⁸and with difficulty coasting along it we came unto a certain place called Fair Havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

⁸Nous la côtoyâmes avec peine, et nous arrivâmes à un lieu nommé Beaux Ports, près duquel était la ville de Lasée.

⁸ואחרי אשר עברנו בתלאות באנו למקום אחד נקרא קלילמני אשר קרובה לו עיר ושמה לסיא׃

⁹And when much time was spent, and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast was now already gone by, Paul admonished them,

⁹Un temps assez long s'était écoulé, et la navigation devenait dangereuse, car l'époque même du jeûne était déjà passée. C'est pourquoi Paul avertit

⁹ויהי מקץ ימים רבים כאשר באה עת הסכנה לירדי הים כי גם הצום כבר עבר ויזהר אתם פולוס׃

¹⁰and said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the lading and the ship, but also of our lives.

¹⁰les autres, en disant: O hommes, je vois que la navigation ne se fera pas sans péril et sans beaucoup de dommage, non seulement pour la cargaison et pour le navire, mais encore pour nos personnes.

¹⁰ויאמר אליהם אנשים ראה אני כי הליכתנו תהיה אך מרי ונזק גדול לא לבד למעמסה ולאניה כי אם גם לנפשותינו׃

¹¹But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship, than to those things which were spoken by Paul.

¹¹Le centenier écouta le pilote et le patron du navire plutôt que les paroles de Paul.

¹¹ושר המאה לא שמע אל דברי פולוס כי אם אל רב החבל ואל בעל האניה׃

¹²And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to put to sea from thence, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, and winter [there; which is] a haven of Crete, looking northeast and south-east.

¹²Et comme le port n'était pas bon pour hiverner, la plupart furent d'avis de le quitter pour tâcher d'atteindre Phénix, port de Crète qui regarde le sud-ouest et le nord-ouest, afin d'y passer l'hiver.

¹²ובאשר החוף איננו טוב לעמד בו בימי הסתיו יעצו הרבים לעבר משם לאמר אולי נוכל הגיע לפיניכס וישבנו שם בימי הסתו והוא חוף בקריטי פונה דרך הדרום מערבה ודרך הצפון מערבה׃

¹³And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close in shore.

¹³Un léger vent du sud vint à souffler, et, se croyant maîtres de leur dessein, ils levèrent l'ancre et côtoyèrent de près l'île de Crète.

¹³ורוח נשבת לאט מדרום ויחשבו כי תצלח עצתם בידם ויעלו העוגין ויעברו לעמת שפת קריטי׃

¹⁴But after no long time there beat down from it a tempestuous wind, which is called Euraquilo:

¹⁴Mais bientôt un vent impétueux, qu'on appelle Euraquilon, se déchaîna sur l'île.

¹⁴ויהי כמעט אחרי כן ותפגע בה רוח נחשל הנקראה אוריקלידון׃

¹⁵and when the ship was caught, and could not face the wind, we gave way [to it,] and were driven.

¹⁵Le navire fut entraîné, sans pouvoir lutter contre le vent, et nous nous laissâmes aller à la dérive.

¹⁵ותטרף האניה ולא יכלה לעמד נגד הרוח ונרף ידינו ממנה וננדף׃

¹⁶And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat:

¹⁶Nous passâmes au-dessous d'une petite île nommée Clauda, et nous eûmes de la peine à nous rendre maîtres de la chaloupe;

¹⁶ותרץ האניה אל עבר אי קטן הנקרא קלודה וכמעט לא יכלנו לאחז העברה׃

¹⁷and when they had hoisted it up, they used helps, under-girding the ship; and, fearing lest they should be cast upon the Syrtis, they lowered the gear, and so were driven.

¹⁷après l'avoir hissée, on se servit des moyens de secours pour ceindre le navire, et, dans la crainte de tomber sur la Syrte, on abaissa les voiles. C'est ainsi qu'on se laissa emporter par le vent.

¹⁷ואחרי משכם אותה אליהם ויקחו לעזר את כל אשר השיגה ידם ויחשבו את דפני האניה ומיראתם פן יפלו אל בין רכסי החול הורידו את כלי המפרש וכה נדפו׃

¹⁸And as we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw the [the freight] overboard;

¹⁸Comme nous étions violemment battus par la tempête, le lendemain on jeta la cargaison à la mer,

¹⁸ויהי הסער הולך וסער עלינו וממחרת הטילו את המעמסה אל הים׃

¹⁹and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship.

¹⁹et le troisième jour nous y lançâmes de nos propres mains les agrès du navire.

¹⁹וביום השלישי הטלנו בידינו את כלי האניה אל הים׃

²⁰And when neither sun nor stars shone upon [us] for many days, and no small tempest lay on [us,] all hope that we should be saved was now taken away.

²⁰Le soleil et les étoiles ne parurent pas pendant plusieurs jours, et la tempête était si forte que nous perdîmes enfin toute espérance de nous sauver.

²⁰ויהי ימים רבים גם השמש גם הכוכבים לא נראו והסערה חזקה עלינו עד מאד ותכרת ממנו כל תקות ישועה׃

²¹And when they had been long without food, then Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss.

²¹On n'avait pas mangé depuis longtemps. Alors Paul, se tenant au milieu d'eux, leur dit: O hommes, il fallait m'écouter et ne pas partir de Crète, afin d'éviter ce péril et ce dommage.

²¹ופולוס עמד בתוכם אחרי האריכם בצום ויאמר אנשים לו שמעתם אלי ולא יצאתם מקריטי כי אז לא קרנו הנזק הזה במריכם׃

²²And now I exhort you to be of good cheer; for there shall be no loss of life among you, but [only] of the ship.

²²Maintenant je vous exhorte à prendre courage; car aucun de vous ne périra, et il n'y aura de perte que celle du navire.

²²ועתה אני אמר אליכם חזקו ואמצו כי לא תאבד נפש מכם בלתי הספינה לבדה׃

²³For there stood by me this night an angel of the God whose I am, whom also I serve,

²³Un ange du Dieu à qui j'appartiens et que je sers m'est apparu cette nuit,

²³כי בלילה הזה נצב עלי מלאך האלהים אשר לו אנכי ואשר אני עבד אתו׃

²⁴saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must stand before Caesar: and lo, God hath granted thee all them that sail with thee.

²⁴et m'a dit: Paul, ne crains point; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici, Dieu t'a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.

²⁴ויאמר אל תירא פולוס עליך עוד לעמד לפני הקיסר ועתה הנה נתן לך האלהים את כל ההלכים אתך באניה׃

²⁵Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even so as it hath been spoken unto me.

²⁵C'est pourquoi, ô hommes, rassurez-vous, car j'ai cette confiance en Dieu qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit.

²⁵על כן אנשים חזקו ואמצו כי מאמין אני לאלהים כי כן יהיה כאשר נאמר אלי׃

²⁶But we must be cast upon a certain island.

²⁶Mais nous devons échouer sur une île.

²⁶אך השלך נשלך אל אחד האיים׃

²⁷But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven to and fro in the [sea of] Adria, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some country:

²⁷La quatorzième nuit, tandis que nous étions ballottés sur l'Adriatique, les matelots, vers le milieu de la nuit, soupçonnèrent qu'on approchait de quelque terre.

²⁷ויהי כבוא ליל ארבעה עשר לטלטולנו בים אדריה כחצות הלילה ויחשבו המלחים כי קרבה להם יבשת׃

²⁸and they sounded, and found twenty fathoms; and after a little space, they sounded again, and found fifteen fathoms.

²⁸Ayant jeté la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, ils la jetèrent de nouveau, et trouvèrent quinze brasses.

²⁸ויורידו את האנך וימצאו עמק הים עשרים קומה ויעברו מעט ויוסיפו להוריד את האנך וימצאו קומות חמש עשרה׃

²⁹And fearing lest haply we should be cast ashore on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for the day.

²⁹Dans la crainte de heurter contre des écueils, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, et attendirent le jour avec impatience.

²⁹וייראו פן יפגעו בשני הסלעים וישליכו מעל אחורי האניה ארבעה עוגינים אל הים ויכספו לאור היום׃

³⁰And as the sailors were seeking to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, under color as though they would lay out anchors from the foreship,

³⁰Mais, comme les matelots cherchaient à s'échapper du navire, et mettaient la chaloupe à la mer sous prétexte de jeter les ancres de la proue,

³⁰והמלחים בקשו לברח מן האניה ויורידו את העברה אל הים באמרם כי יש את נפשם לשלח עוגינים גם מראש האניה׃

³¹Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

³¹Paul dit au centenier et aux soldats: Si ces hommes ne restent pas dans le navire, vous ne pouvez être sauvés.

³¹ויאמר פולוס אל שר המאה ואל אנשי הצבא לאמר אם אלה לא ישבו אתנו באניה לא תוכלו אתם להושע׃

³²Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

³²Alors les soldats coupèrent les cordes de la chaloupe, et la laissèrent tomber.

³²ויקצצו אנשי הצבא את חבלי העברה ויתנוה לנפול׃

³³And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take some food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.

³³Avant que le jour parût, Paul exhorta tout le monde à prendre de la nourriture, disant: C'est aujourd'hui le quatorzième jour que vous êtes dans l'attente et que vous persistez à vous abstenir de manger.

³³והבקר טרם יאור ופולוס מבקש מכלם לטעם לחם לאמר היום יום ארבעה עשר אשר חכיתם צמים ולא טעמתם מאומה׃

³⁴Wherefore I beseech you to take some food: for this is for your safety: for there shall not a hair perish from the head of any of you.

³⁴Je vous invite donc à prendre de la nourriture, car cela est nécessaire pour votre salut, et il ne se perdra pas un cheveu de la tête d'aucun de vous.

³⁴על כן קרא אני אתכם לטעם לחם כי הוא למחיתכם כי איש איש מכם לא יפל משערת ראשו ארצה׃

³⁵And when he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; and he brake it, and began to eat.

³⁵Ayant ainsi parlé, il prit du pain, et, après avoir rendu grâces à Dieu devant tous, il le rompit, et se mit à manger.

³⁵הוא דבר את הדברים האלה והוא לקח את הלחס ויודה לאלהים לפני כלם ויבצע ויחל לאכל׃

³⁶Then were they all of good cheer, and themselves also took food.

³⁶Et tous, reprenant courage, mangèrent aussi.

³⁶ויאמץ לב כלם ויטעמו אכל גם המה׃

³⁷And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.

³⁷Nous étions, dans le navire, deux cent soixante-seize personnes en tout.

³⁷ואנחנו כל נפש אשר באניה מאתים ושבעים ושש׃

³⁸And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

³⁸Quand ils eurent mangé suffisamment, ils allégèrent le navire en jetant le blé à la mer.

³⁸ויאכלו לשבעה ויקלו מעל האניה ויטילו את הצדה אל הים׃

³⁹And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they perceived a certain bay with a beach, and they took counsel whether they could drive the ship upon it.

³⁹Lorsque le jour fut venu, ils ne reconnurent point la terre; mais, ayant aperçu un golfe avec une plage, ils résolurent d'y pousser le navire, s'ils le pouvaient.

³⁹הבקר אור ולא הכירו את הארץ אבל ראו כמפרץ וחוף לו ויועצו לנהג אליו את האניה אם יוכלו׃

⁴⁰And casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosing the bands of the rudders; and hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.

⁴⁰Ils délièrent les ancres pour les laisser aller dans la mer, et ils relâchèrent en même temps les attaches des gouvernails; puis ils mirent au vent la voile d'artimon, et se dirigèrent vers le rivage.

⁴⁰ויגדעו את העוגינים ויעזבום לים ויתירו גם את מיתרי המנהיג ויפרשו מפרש התרן אל פני הרוח ויבקשו לבא אל החוף׃

⁴¹But lighting upon a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground; and the foreship struck and remained unmoveable, but the stern began to break up by the violence [of the waves].

⁴¹Mais ils rencontrèrent une langue de terre, où ils firent échouer le navire; et la proue, s'étant engagée, resta immobile, tandis que la poupe se brisait par la violence des vagues.

⁴¹ויפגעו במקום אשר הים משני עבריו ותדבק בו האניה ותעמד ראשה לא ינוע ואחוריה נשברו משאון הגלים׃

⁴²And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any [of them] should swim out, and escape.

⁴²Les soldats furent d'avis de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu'un d'eux ne s'échappât à la nage.

⁴²ותהי עצת אנשי הצבא להמית את האסירים פן ישחה איש מהם וימלט׃

⁴³But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stayed them from their purpose; and commanded that they who could swim should cast themselves overboard, and get first to the land;

⁴³Mais le centenier, qui voulait sauver Paul, les empêcha d'exécuter ce dessein. Il ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager de se jeter les premiers dans l'eau pour gagner la terre,

⁴³ושר המאה חפץ להציל את פולוס וינא את עצתם ויאמר מי ידע לשחות ירד ויעבר ליבשה בראשנה והנשארים אלה על קרשים ואלה על שברי האניה׃

⁴⁴and the rest, some on planks, and some on [other] things from the ship. And so it came to pass, that they all escaped safe to the land.

⁴⁴et aux autres de se mettre sur des planches ou sur des débris du navire. Et ainsi tous parvinrent à terre sains et saufs.

⁴⁴ויהי כן וימלטו כלם אל היבשה׃
