¹And when we were escaped, then we knew that the island was called Melita.

¹Après nous être sauvés, nous reconnûmes que l'île s'appelait Malte.

¹וכאשר נמלטנו נודע לנו כי שם האי מליטי׃

²And the barbarians showed us no common kindness; for they kindled a fire, and received us all, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

²Les barbares nous témoignèrent une bienveillance peu commune; ils nous recueillirent tous auprès d'un grand feu, qu'ils avaient allumé parce que la pluie tombait et qu'il faisait grand froid.

²והנכרים לא המעיטו חסדם עמנו כי בערו אש ויאספו את כלנו אליהם מפני הגשם היורד ומפני הקר׃

³But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out by reason of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

³Paul ayant ramassé un tas de broussailles et l'ayant mis au feu, une vipère en sortit par l'effet de la chaleur et s'attacha à sa main.

³ופולוס אסף לו ערמת קצים וישם על המוקד ומן החם יצא אפעה ויאחז בידו׃

⁴And when the barbarians saw the [venomous] creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped from the sea, yet Justice hath not suffered to live.

⁴Quand les barbares virent l'animal suspendu à sa main, ils se dirent les uns aux autres: Assurément cet homme est un meurtrier, puisque la Justice n'a pas voulu le laisser vivre, après qu'il a été sauvé de la mer.

⁴ויראו הנכרים את החיה תלויה על ידו ויאמרו איש אל רעהו אכן רצח האיש הזה אשר הנקמה לא הניחה לו לחיות אף כי נמלט מן הים׃

⁵Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm.

⁵Paul secoua l'animal dans le feu, et ne ressentit aucun mal.

⁵והוא נער את החיה מעל ידו אל תוך האש ולא הרעה לו מאומה׃

⁶But they expected that he would have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but when they were long in expectation and beheld nothing amiss came to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

⁶Ces gens s'attendaient à le voir enfler ou tomber mort subitement; mais, après avoir longtemps attendu, voyant qu'il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent d'avis et dirent que c'était un dieu.

⁶והם הוחילו אשר יצבה גופו או אשר יפל מת פתאם ויחילו עד בוש והנה לא קרהו כל אסון ויהפך לבם ויאמרו כי אלהים הוא׃

⁷Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us, and entertained us three days courteously.

⁷Il y avait, dans les environs, des terres appartenant au principal personnage de l'île, nommé Publius, qui nous reçut et nous logea pendant trois jours de la manière la plus amicale.

⁷ובסביבו המקום ההוא היו שדות אשר לראש אנשי האי ושמו פובליוס הוא הביא אתנו לביתו ויכלכל אתנו בטובו שלשת ימים׃

⁸And it was so, that the father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery: unto whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laying his hands on him healed him.

⁸Le père de Publius était alors au lit, malade de la fièvre et de la dysenterie; Paul, s'étant rendu vers lui, pria, lui imposa les mains, et le guérit.

⁸ואבי פובליוס מוטל למשכב בקדחת ובמחלה המעים ויבא אליו פולוס ויתפלל וישם עליו את ידיו וירפאהו׃

⁹And when this was done, the rest also that had diseases in the island came, and were cured:

⁹Là-dessus, vinrent les autres malades de l'île, et ils furent guéris.

⁹ואחרי המעשה הזה באו גם החלים האחרים אשר באי וירפאו׃

¹⁰who also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board such things as we needed.

¹⁰On nous rendit de grands honneurs, et, à notre départ, on nous fournit les choses dont nous avions besoin.

¹⁰ויכבדנו כבוד גדול ובלכתנו משם ספקו לנו די צרכנו׃

¹¹And after three months we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose sign was The Twin Brothers.

¹¹Après un séjour de trois mois, nous nous embarquâmes sur un navire d'Alexandrie, qui avait passé l'hiver dans l'île, et qui portait pour enseigne les Dioscures.

¹¹ואחרי שלשת חדשים עברנו משם באניה אלכסנדרית אשר ישבה באי בימי הסתו ואות דגלה התאומים׃

¹²And touching at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

¹²Ayant abordé à Syracuse, nous y restâmes trois jours.

¹²ונבא אל סרקוסא ונשב שם שלשת ימים׃

¹³And from thence we made a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium: and after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli;

¹³De là, en suivant la côte, nous atteignîmes Reggio; et, le vent du midi s'étant levé le lendemain, nous fîmes en deux jours le trajet jusqu'à Pouzzoles,

¹³משם סבנו ונבא אל רגיון ובנשב רוח דרומית ביום המחרת באנו ביום השני אל פוטיולי׃

¹⁴where we found brethren, and were entreated to tarry with them seven days: and so we came to Rome.

¹⁴où nous trouvâmes des frères qui nous prièrent de passer sept jours avec eux. Et c'est ainsi que nous allâmes à Rome.

¹⁴ושם מצאנו אחים ויבקשו ממנו לשבת אתם שבעת ימים ובכן הלכנו אל רומי׃

¹⁵And from thence the brethren, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

¹⁵De Rome vinrent à notre rencontre, jusqu'au Forum d'Appius et aux Trois Tavernes, les frères qui avaient entendu parler de nous. Paul, en les voyant, rendit grâces à Dieu, et prit courage.

¹⁵וישמעו האחים את בואנו ויצאו משם לקראתנו עד לשוק אפיוס ועד לשלשת החניות וירא אתם פולוס ויודה לאלהים ויתחזק׃

¹⁶And when we entered into Rome, Paul was suffered to abide by himself with the soldier that guarded him.

¹⁶Lorsque nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, on permit à Paul de demeurer en son particulier, avec un soldat qui le gardait.

¹⁶ואחר באנו אל רומי העביר שר המאה את האסירים אל שר הצבא ולפולוס הניחו לשבת לבדו עם איש הצבא השמר אותו׃

¹⁷And it came to pass, that after three days he called together those that were the chief of the Jews: and when they were come together, he said unto them, I, brethren, though I had done nothing against the people, or the customs of our fathers, yet was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans:

¹⁷Au bout de trois jours, Paul convoqua les principaux des Juifs; et, quand ils furent réunis, il leur adressa ces paroles: Hommes frères, sans avoir rien fait contre le peuple ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, j'ai été mis en prison à Jérusalem et livré de là entre les mains des Romains.

¹⁷ויהי אחרי שלשת ימים ויקרא פולוס אליו את ראשי היהודים ויקהלו אליו ויאמר אליהם אנשים אחים אף כי לא מעלתי מעל בעמנו ובחקות אבותינו אסרוני בירושלים וימסרוני לידי הרומיים׃

¹⁸who, when they had examined me, desired to set me at liberty, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁸Après m'avoir interrogé, ils voulaient me relâcher, parce qu'il n'y avait en moi rien qui méritât la mort.

¹⁸והם אחרי חקרם אתי אמרו לפטרני כי לא נמצא בי משפט מות׃

¹⁹But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had aught whereof to accuse my nation.

¹⁹Mais les Juifs s'y opposèrent, et j'ai été forcé d'en appeler à César, n'ayant du reste aucun dessein d'accuser ma nation.

¹⁹והיהודים קמו בי ואאנס לקרא את הקיסר לדיני אך אין נפשי לשטון את עמי בדבר׃

²⁰For this cause therefore did I entreat you to see and to speak with [me]: for because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

²⁰Voilà pourquoi j'ai demandé à vous voir et à vous parler; car c'est à cause de l'espérance d'Israël que je porte cette chaîne.

²⁰ובעבור זאת קראתי לכם לראותכם ולדבר עמכם כי בגלל תקות ישראל אסור אני בכבל הזה׃

²¹And they said unto him, We neither received letters from Judaea concerning thee, nor did any of the brethren come hither and report or speak any harm of thee.

²¹Ils lui répondirent: Nous n'avons reçu de Judée aucune lettre à ton sujet, et il n'est venu aucun frère qui ait rapporté ou dit du mal de toi.

²¹ויאמרו אליו לא קבלנו על אדותיך אגרות מארץ יהודה ולא בא הנה אחד מן האחים אשר הגיד או דבר עליך דבר רע׃

²²But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.

²²Mais nous voudrions apprendre de toi ce que tu penses, car nous savons que cette secte rencontre partout de l'opposition.

²²אמנם חפצים אנחנו לשמע את אשר בלבבך כי נודע לנו אשר בכל מקום יריבו אל הכת הזאת׃

²³And when they had appointed him a day, they came to him into his lodging in great number; to whom he expounded [the matter,] testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening.

²³Ils lui fixèrent un jour, et plusieurs vinrent le trouver dans son logis. Paul leur annonça le royaume de Dieu, en rendant témoignage, et en cherchant, par la loi de Moïse et par les prophètes, à les persuader de ce qui concerne Jésus. L'entretien dura depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.

²³וישימו לו יום מועד ויבאו אליו רבים אל מלונו ויעד בהם ויבאר את מלכות אלהים ויוכח להם עניני ישוע מתורת משה ומן הנביאים מבקר עד ערב׃

²⁴And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.

²⁴Les uns furent persuadés par ce qu'il disait, et les autres ne crurent point.

²⁴ויש אשר שמעו אל דבריו ויש אשר לא האמינו׃

²⁵And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto your fathers,

²⁵Comme ils se retiraient en désaccord, Paul n'ajouta que ces mots: C'est avec raison que le Saint-Esprit, parlant à vos pères par le prophète Esaïe,

²⁵ויחלקו בדעתם ויסורו ללכת לדרכם בדבר פולוס הדבר האחד הזה היטב דבר רוח הקדש לאבותינו בפי ישעיהו הנביא לאמר׃

²⁶saying, Go thou unto this people, and say, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive:

²⁶a dit: Va vers ce peuple, et dis: Vous entendrez de vos oreilles, et vous ne comprendrez point; Vous regarderez de vos yeux, et vous ne verrez point.

²⁶לך ואמרת לעם הזה שמעו שמוע ואל תבינו וראו ראו ואל תדעו׃

²⁷For this people's heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest, haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.

²⁷Car le coeur de ce peuple est devenu insensible; Ils ont endurci leurs oreilles, et ils ont fermé leurs yeux, De peur qu'ils ne voient de leurs yeux, qu'ils n'entendent de leurs oreilles, Qu'ils ne comprennent de leur coeur, Qu'ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse.

²⁷כי שמן לב העם הזה ואזניו כבדו ואת עיניו השע פן יראה בעיניו ובאזניו ישמע ולבבו יבין ושב ורפאתיו׃

²⁸Be it known therefore unto you, that this salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles: they will also hear.

²⁸Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu a été envoyé aux païens, et qu'ils l'écouteront.

²⁸לכן דעו כי לגוים נשלחה תשועת אלהים והמה ישמעו׃

²⁹[And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, having much disputing among themselves.]

²⁹Lorsqu'il eut dit cela, les Juifs s'en allèrent, discutant vivement entre eux.

²⁹ויהי בדברו זאת הלכו מאתו היהודים ויתוכחו הרבה איש עם רעהו׃

³⁰And he abode two whole years in his own hired dwelling, and received all that went in unto him,

³⁰Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans une maison qu'il avait louée. Il recevait tous ceux qui venaient le voir,

³⁰ופולוס ישב שנתים ימים בביתו אשר שכר לו ויקבל את כל הבאים אליו׃

³¹preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, none forbidding him.

³¹prêchant le royaume de Dieu et enseignant ce qui concerne le Seigneur Jésus-Christ, en toute liberté et sans obstacle.

³¹ויקרא את מלכות האלהים וילמד את דרכי ישוע המשיח אדנינו בכל בטחון לבו ואין מנע׃
