¹And the high priest said, Are these things so?

¹Le souverain sacrificateur dit: Les choses sont-elles ainsi?

¹ויאמר הכהן הגדול האמת הוא אשר דברו׃

²And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken: The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,

²Etienne répondit: Hommes frères et pères, écoutez! Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu'il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu'il s'établît à Charran;

²ויען ויאמר אנשים אחים ואבות שמעו אלהי הכבוד נראה אל אברהם אבינו בהיותו בארם נהרים לפני שבתו בחרן׃

³and said unto him, Get thee out of thy land, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee.

³et il lui dit: Quitte ton pays et ta famille, et va dans le pays que je te montrerai.

³ויאמר אליו לך לך מארצך וממולדתך ובא אל הארץ אשר אראך׃

⁴Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Haran: and from thence, when his father was dead, [God] removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell:

⁴Il sortit alors du pays des Chaldéens, et s'établit à Charran. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit passer dans ce pays que vous habitez maintenant;

⁴ויצא מארץ כשדים וישב בחרן ואחרי מות אביו העביר אתו משם אל הארץ הזאת אשר אתם ישבים בה עתה׃

⁵and he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: and he promised that he would give it to him in possession, and to his seed after him, when [as yet] he had no child.

⁵il ne lui donna aucune propriété en ce pays, pas même de quoi poser le pied, mais il promit de lui en donner la possession, et à sa postérité après lui, quoiqu'il n'eût point d'enfant.

⁵ולא נתן לו נחלה בה אף לא מדרך כף רגל ויבטח לתתה לאחזה לו ולזרעו אחריו ועוד לא היה לו בן׃

⁶And God spake on this wise, that his seed should sojourn in a strange land, and that they should bring them into bondage, and treat them ill, four hundred years.

⁶Dieu parla ainsi: Sa postérité séjournera dans un pays étranger; on la réduira en servitude et on la maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans.

⁶ויאמר לו אלהים כי גר יהיה זרעו בארץ לא להם ועבדום וענו אתם ארבע מאות שנה׃

⁷And the nation to which they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

⁷Mais la nation à laquelle ils auront été asservis, c'est moi qui la jugerai, dit Dieu. Après cela, ils sortiront, et ils me serviront dans ce lieu-ci.

⁷וגם את הגוי אשר יעבדו דן אנכי אמר אלהים ואחרי כן יצאו ויעבדוני במקום הזה׃

⁸And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so [Abraham] begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac [begat] Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.

⁸Puis Dieu donna à Abraham l'alliance de la circoncision; et ainsi, Abraham, ayant engendré Isaac, le circoncit le huitième jour; Isaac engendra et circoncit Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.

⁸ויתן לו את ברית המילה ובכן הוליד את יצחק וימל אתו ביום השמיני ויצחק הוליד את יעקב ויעקב הוליד את שנים עשר האבות׃

⁹And the patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt: and God was with him,

⁹Les patriarches, jaloux de Joseph, le vendirent pour être emmené en Egypte. Mais Dieu fut avec lui,

⁹ויקנאו האבות ביוסף וימכרו אותו מצרימה ואלהים היה עמו׃

¹⁰and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹⁰et le délivra de toutes ses tribulations; il lui donna de la sagesse et lui fit trouver grâce devant Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, qui l'établit gouverneur d'Egypte et de toute sa maison.

¹⁰ויצילהו מכל צרותיו ויתן לו חן וחכמה לפני פרעה מלך מצרים וישימהו שליט על מצרים ועל כל ביתו׃

¹¹Now there came a famine over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

¹¹Il survint une famine dans tout le pays d'Egypte, et dans celui de Canaan. La détresse était grande, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de quoi se nourrir.

¹¹ויהי רעב על כל ארץ מצרים וכנען וצרה גדולה ואבותינו לא מצאו אכל׃

¹²But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time.

¹²Jacob apprit qu'il y avait du blé en Egypte, et il y envoya nos pères une première fois.

¹²וישמע יעקב כי יש שבר במצרים וישלח שמה את אבותינו בפעם הראשונה׃

¹³And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's race became manifest unto Pharaoh.

¹³Et la seconde fois, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et Pharaon sut de quelle famille il était.

¹³ובפעם השנית התודע יוסף אל אחיו ומולדת יוסף נגלתה לפרעה׃

¹⁴And Joseph sent, and called to him Jacob his father, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

¹⁴Puis Joseph envoya chercher son père Jacob, et toute sa famille, composée de soixante-quinze personnes.

¹⁴וישלח יוסף ויקרא ליעקב אביו ולכל משפחתו בשבעים וחמש נפש׃

¹⁵And Jacob went down into Egypt; and he died, himself and our fathers;

¹⁵Jacob descendit en Egypte, où il mourut, ainsi que nos pères;

¹⁵וירד יעקב מצרימה וימת הוא ואבותינו׃

¹⁶and they were carried over unto Shechem, and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver of the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

¹⁶et ils furent transportés à Sichem, et déposés dans le sépulcre qu'Abraham avait acheté, à prix d'argent, des fils d'Hémor, père de Sichem.

¹⁶ויובאו שכמה ויושמו בקבר אשר קנה אברהם בכספו מיד בני חמור אבי שכם׃

¹⁷But as the time of the promise drew nigh which God vouchsafed unto Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

¹⁷Le temps approchait où devait s'accomplir la promesse que Dieu avait faite à Abraham, et le peuple s'accrut et se multiplia en Egypte,

¹⁷ויהי כאשר קרבה עת ההבטחה אשר נשבע אלהים לאברהם ויגדל העם וירב במצרים׃

¹⁸till there arose another king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

¹⁸jusqu'à ce que parut un autre roi, qui n'avait pas connu Joseph.

¹⁸עד כי קם מלך אחר אשר לא ידע את יוסף׃

¹⁹The same dealt craftily with our race, and ill-treated our fathers, that they should cast out their babes to the end they might not live.

¹⁹Ce roi, usant d'artifice contre notre race, maltraita nos pères, au point de leur faire exposer leurs enfants, pour qu'ils ne vécussent pas.

¹⁹וזה התחכם למשפחתנו וירע לאבותינו ויצו אתם להשליך את עלליהם אל פני השדה לבלתי החיותם׃

²⁰At which season Moses was born, and was exceeding fair; and he was nourished three months in his father's house.

²⁰A cette époque, naquit Moïse, qui était beau aux yeux de Dieu. Il fut nourri trois mois dans la maison de son père;

²⁰בעת ההיא נולד משה ויהי טוב לאלהים ויהי אמון בבית אביו שלשה ירחים׃

²¹and when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

²¹et, quand il eut été exposé, la fille de Pharaon le recueillit, et l'éleva comme son fils.

²¹וכאשר השלך אספה אתו בת פרעה ותגדלהו לה לבן׃

²²And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians; and he was mighty in his words and works.

²²Moïse fut instruit dans toute la sagesse des Egyptiens, et il était puissant en paroles et en oeuvres.

²²וילמד משה בכל חכמת מצרים ויהי גבור בדברים ובמעשים׃

²³But when he was well-nigh forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

²³Il avait quarante ans, lorsqu'il lui vint dans le coeur de visiter ses frères, les fils d'Israël.

²³ובמלאת לו ארבעים שנה עלה על לבו לפקד את אחיו בני ישראל׃

²⁴And seeing one [of them] suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, smiting the Egyptian:

²⁴Il en vit un qu'on outrageait, et, prenant sa défense, il vengea celui qui était maltraité, et frappa l'Egyptien.

²⁴וירא איש אחד מעשק חנם ויושע לו ויקם נקמת המכה בהכותו את המצרי׃

²⁵and he supposed that his brethren understood that God by his hand was giving them deliverance; but they understood not.

²⁵Il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu leur accordait la délivrance par sa main; mais ils ne comprirent pas.

²⁵ויחשב בלבבו כי יבינו אחיו אשר על ידו יתן האלהים להם תשועה והם לא הבינו׃

²⁶And the day following he appeared unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

²⁶Le jour suivant, il parut au milieu d'eux comme ils se battaient, et il les exhorta à la paix: Hommes, dit-il, vous êtes frères; pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous l'un l'autre?

²⁶ויהי ביום השני ויבא בתוכם והם נצים ויבקש לעשות שלום ביניהם לאמר אנשים אחים אתם ולמה תעשקו איש את אחיו׃

²⁷But he that did his neighbor wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

²⁷Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain le repoussa, en disant: Qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous?

²⁷והעשק את רעהו הדפו לאמר מי שמך לאיש שר ושפט עלינו׃

²⁸Wouldest thou kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?

²⁸Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu as tué hier l'Egyptien?

²⁸הלהרגני אתה אמר כאשר הרגת אתמל את המצרי׃

²⁹And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons.

²⁹A cette parole, Moïse prit la fuite, et il alla séjourner dans le pays de Madian, où il engendra deux fils.

²⁹ויברח משה על הדבר הזה ויהי גר בארץ מדין ויולד שם שני בנים׃

³⁰And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

³⁰Quarante ans plus tard, un ange lui apparut, au désert de la montagne de Sinaï, dans la flamme d'un buisson en feu.

³⁰ובמלאת ארבעים שנה נראה אליו מלאך יהוה במדבר הר סיני בלבת אש מתוך הסנה׃

³¹And when Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold, there came a voice of the Lord,

³¹Moïse, voyant cela, fut étonné de cette apparition; et, comme il s'approchait pour examiner, la voix du Seigneur se fit entendre:

³¹וירא משה ויתמה על המראה ובסורו לראות ויהי קול יהוה אליו׃

³²I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

³²Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob. Et Moïse, tout tremblant, n'osait regarder.

³²אנכי אלהי אבותיך אלהי אברהם אלהי יצחק ואלהי יעקב ויחרד משה ויירא מהביט׃

³³And the Lord said unto him, Loose the shoes from thy feet: for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

³³Le Seigneur lui dit: Ote tes souliers de tes pieds, car le lieu sur lequel tu te tiens est une terre sainte.

³³ויאמר אליו יהוה של נעליך מעל רגליך כי המקום אשר אתה עומד עליו אדמת קדש הוא׃

³⁴I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I am come down to deliver them: and now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

³⁴J'ai vu la souffrance de mon peuple qui est en Egypte, j'ai entendu ses gémissements, et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Maintenant, va, je t'enverrai en Egypte.

³⁴ראה ראיתי את עני עמי אשר במצרים ואת נאקתם שמעתי וארד להצילם ועתה לכה ואשלחך מצרימה׃

³⁵This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? him hath God sent [to be] both a ruler and a deliverer with the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.

³⁵Ce Moïse, qu'ils avaient renié, en disant: Qui t'a établi chef et juge? c'est lui que Dieu envoya comme chef et comme libérateur avec l'aide de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.

³⁵הוא משה אשר כחשו בו לאמר מי שמך לשר ושפט אתו שלח האלהים לשר וגאל ביד המלאך הנראה אליו בסנה׃

³⁶This man led them forth, having wrought wonders and signs in Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

³⁶C'est lui qui les fit sortir d'Egypte, en opérant des prodiges et des miracles au pays d'Egypte, au sein de la mer Rouge, et au désert, pendant quarante ans.

³⁶והוא הוציאם ויעש אתות ומפתים בארץ מצרים ובים סוף ובמדבר ארבעים שנה׃

³⁷This is that Moses, who said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up unto you from among your brethren, like unto me.

³⁷C'est ce Moïse qui dit aux fils d'Israël: Dieu vous suscitera d'entre vos frères un prophète comme moi.

³⁷הוא משה אשר אמר אל בני ישראל נביא מקרב אחיכם כמני יקים לכם יהוה אלהיכם אליו תשמעון׃

³⁸This is he that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel that spake to him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received living oracles to give unto us:

³⁸C'est lui qui, lors de l'assemblée au désert, étant avec l'ange qui lui parlait sur la montagne de Sinaï et avec nos pères, reçut des oracles vivants, pour nous les donner.

³⁸הוא אשר היה בקהל במדבר עם המלאך הדבר אליו בהר סיני ועם אבותינו ואשר קבל דברים חיים לתת לנו׃

³⁹to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but thrust him from them, and turned back in their hearts unto Egypt,

³⁹Nos pères ne voulurent pas lui obéir, ils le repoussèrent, et ils tournèrent leur coeur vers l'Egypte,

³⁹הוא אשר אבותינו לא אבו לשמע לו כי אם מאסו אתו ולבבם פנה מצרימה׃

⁴⁰saying unto Aaron, Make us gods that shall go before us: for as for this Moses, who led us forth out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.

⁴⁰en disant à Aaron: Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous; car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qu'il est devenu.

⁴⁰ויאמרו אל אהרן עשה לנו אלהים אשר ילכו לפנינו כי זה משה אשר העלנו מארץ מצרים לא ידענו מה היה לו׃

⁴¹And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.

⁴¹Et, en ces jours-là, ils firent un veau, ils offrirent un sacrifice à l'idole, et se réjouirent de l'oeuvre de leurs mains.

⁴¹ויעשו עגל בימים ההם ויזבחו זבחים לאליל וישמחו במעשה ידיהם׃

⁴²But God turned, and gave them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, Did ye offer unto me slain beasts and sacrifices Forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

⁴²Alors Dieu se détourna, et les livra au culte de l'armée du ciel, selon qu'il est écrit dans le livre des prophètes: M'avez-vous offert des victimes et des sacrifices Pendant quarante ans au désert, maison d'Israël?...

⁴²ויפן מהם האלהים ויתנם לעבד את צבא השמים כאשר כתוב בספר הנביאים הזבחים ומנחה הגשתם לי במדבר ארבעים שנה בית ישראל׃

⁴³And ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, And the star of the god Rephan, The figures which ye made to worship them: And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

⁴³Vous avez porté la tente de Moloch Et l'étoile du dieu Remphan, Ces images que vous avez faites pour les adorer! Aussi vous transporterai-je au delà de Babylone.

⁴³ונשאתם את סכת מלכם ואת כוכב אלהיכם רמפן הצלמים אשר עשיתם להשתחות להם והגליתי אתכם מהלאה לבבל׃

⁴⁴Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he appointed who spake unto Moses, that he should make it according to the figure that he had seen.

⁴⁴Nos pères avaient au désert le tabernacle du témoignage, comme l'avait ordonné celui qui dit à Moïse de le faire d'après le modèle qu'il avait vu.

⁴⁴משכן העדות היה לאבותינו במדבר כאשר צוה המדבר אל משה לעשות אתו כתבנית אשר ראה׃

⁴⁵Which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered on the possession of the nations, that God thrust out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

⁴⁵Et nos pères, l'ayant reçu, l'introduisirent, sous la conduite de Josué, dans le pays qui était possédé par les nations que Dieu chassa devant eux, et il y resta jusqu'aux jours de David.

⁴⁵ואבותינו לקחהו וגם הביאהו אתם הם ויהושע ברשתם את ארצות הגוים אשר גרש אתם אלהים מפני אבותינו עד ימי דוד׃

⁴⁶who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.

⁴⁶David trouva grâce devant Dieu, et demanda d'élever une demeure pour le Dieu de Jacob;

⁴⁶והוא מצא חן בעיני אלהים וישאל למצא משכנות לאלהי יעקב׃

⁴⁷But Solomon built him a house.

⁴⁷et ce fut Salomon qui lui bâtit une maison.

⁴⁷ושלמה בנה לו בית׃

⁴⁸Howbeit the Most High dwelleth not in [houses] made with hands; as saith the prophet,

⁴⁸Mais le Très-Haut n'habite pas dans ce qui est fait de main d'homme, comme dit le prophète:

⁴⁸אבל העליון לא ישכן בהיכלות מעשי ידים כאשר אמר הנביא׃

⁴⁹The heaven is my throne, And the earth the footstool of my feet: What manner of house will ye build me? saith the Lord: Or what is the place of my rest?

⁴⁹Le ciel est mon trône, Et la terre mon marchepied. Quelle maison me bâtirez-vous, dit le Seigneur, Ou quel sera le lieu de mon repos?

⁴⁹השמים כסאי והארץ הדם רגלי אי זה בית אשר תבנו לי אמר יהוה ואי זה מקום מנוחתי׃

⁵⁰Did not my hand make all these things?

⁵⁰N'est-ce pas ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses?...

⁵⁰הלא את כל אלה ידי עשתה׃

⁵¹Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye.

⁵¹Hommes au cou raide, incirconcis de coeur et d'oreilles! vous vous opposez toujours au Saint-Esprit. Ce que vos pères ont été, vous l'êtes aussi.

⁵¹קשי ערף וערלי לב ואזנים ממרים הייתם תמיד ברוח הקדש כאבותיכם גם אתם׃

⁵²Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed them that showed before of the coming of the Righteous One; of whom ye have now become betrayers and murderers;

⁵²Lequel des prophètes vos pères n'ont-ils pas persécuté? Ils ont tué ceux qui annonçaient d'avance la venue du Juste, que vous avez livré maintenant, et dont vous avez été les meurtriers,

⁵²מי מהנביאים אשר לא רדפוהו אבותיכם אף המיתו את המבשרים מקדם ביאת הצדיק אשר עתה הייתם אתם מוסריו ומרצחיו׃

⁵³ye who received the law as it was ordained by angels, and kept it not.

⁵³vous qui avez reçu la loi d'après des commandements d'anges, et qui ne l'avez point gardée!...

⁵³אתם אשר קבלתם את התורה על ידי מלאכות המלאכים ולא שמרתם אותה׃

⁵⁴Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

⁵⁴En entendant ces paroles, ils étaient furieux dans leur coeur, et ils grinçaient des dents contre lui.

⁵⁴ויהי כשמעם את אלה התרגזו בלבבם ויחרקו עליו שניהם׃

⁵⁵But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

⁵⁵Mais Etienne, rempli du Saint-Esprit, et fixant les regards vers le ciel, vit la gloire de Dieu et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu.

⁵⁵והוא מלא רוח הקדש ויבט השמימה וירא את כבוד אלהים ואת ישוע נצב לימין האלהים׃

⁵⁶and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.

⁵⁶Et il dit: Voici, je vois les cieux ouverts, et le Fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu.

⁵⁶ויאמר הנני ראה את השמים נפתחים ואת בן האדם נצב לימין האלהים׃

⁵⁷But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;

⁵⁷Ils poussèrent alors de grands cris, en se bouchant les oreilles, et ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble sur lui,

⁵⁷ויצעקו בקול גדול ויאטמו את אזניהם ויתנפלו עליו כלם יחד׃

⁵⁸and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

⁵⁸le traînèrent hors de la ville, et le lapidèrent. Les témoins déposèrent leurs vêtements aux pieds d'un jeune homme nommé Saul.

⁵⁸וידחפהו חוצה לעיר ויסקלו אתו באבנים והעדים פשטו את בגדיהם לרגלי בחור אחד ושמו שאול׃

⁵⁹And they stoned Stephen, calling upon [the Lord], and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

⁵⁹Et ils lapidaient Etienne, qui priait et disait: Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit!

⁵⁹ויסקלו את אסטפנוס והוא משוע ואמר אדני ישוע קבל את רוחי׃

⁶⁰And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

⁶⁰Puis, s'étant mis à genoux, il s'écria d'une voix forte: Seigneur, ne leur impute pas ce péché! Et, après ces paroles, il s'endormit.

⁶⁰ויכרע על ברכיו ויצעק בקול גדול יהוה אל תשמר להם את החטא הזה ויהי אחרי דברו כדבר הזה ויישן׃
