¹But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

¹Or, aussi longtemps que l'héritier est enfant, je dis qu'il ne diffère en rien d'un esclave, quoiqu'il soit le maître de tout;

¹ואני אמר היורש כל עת היותו קטן אין הבדל בינו ובין העבד אף אם הוא אדון הכל׃

²but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.

²mais il est sous des tuteurs et des administrateurs jusqu'au temps marqué par le père.

²אלא הוא תחת יד אמנים ופקידי הבית עד לזמן המיעד לו מאת אביו׃

³So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world:

³Nous aussi, de la même manière, lorsque nous étions enfants, nous étions sous l'esclavage des rudiments du monde;

³ככה גם אנחנו בעוד היותנו קטנים היינו משעבדים ליסדות העולם׃

⁴but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

⁴mais, lorsque les temps ont été accomplis, Dieu a envoyé son Fils, né d'une femme, né sous la loi,

⁴ובמלאת העת שלח האלהים את בנו אשר נולד מאשה ונתן תחת יד התורה׃

⁵that he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

⁵afin qu'il rachetât ceux qui étaient sous la loi, afin que nous reçussions l'adoption.

⁵לפדות את אשר היו תחת יד התורה למען נקבל את משפט הבנים׃

⁶And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

⁶Et parce que vous êtes fils, Dieu a envoyé dans nos coeurs l'Esprit de son Fils, lequel crie: Abba! Père!

⁶ויען כי בנים אתם שלח האלהים בלבבכם את רוח בנו הקורא אבא אבינו׃

⁷So that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

⁷Ainsi tu n'es plus esclave, mais fils; et si tu es fils, tu es aussi héritier par la grâce de Dieu.

⁷לכן אינך עוד עבד כי אם בן ואם בן אתה הנך גם יורש האלהים על ידי המשיח׃

⁸Howbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods:

⁸Autrefois, ne connaissant pas Dieu, vous serviez des dieux qui ne le sont pas de leur nature;

⁸הן לפנים באין דעת אלהים הייתם עבדים את אשר בעצמותם אינם אלהים׃

⁹but now that ye have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage over again?

⁹mais à présent que vous avez connu Dieu, ou plutôt que vous avez été connus de Dieu, comment retournez-vous à ces faibles et pauvres rudiments, auxquels de nouveau vous voulez vous asservir encore?

⁹ועתה אחרי ידעתם את האלהים ויותר אחרי שנודעתם לאלהים איך תשובו אל היסדות הרפים והדלים ההם אשר תרצו להכנע להם מחדש׃

¹⁰Ye observe days, and months, and seasons, and years.

¹⁰Vous observez les jours, les mois, les temps et les années!

¹⁰ימים אתם שמרים וחדשים ומועדים ושנים׃

¹¹I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain.

¹¹Je crains d'avoir inutilement travaillé pour vous.

¹¹מתירא אני פן לריק עמלתי בכם׃

¹²I beseech you, brethren, become as I [am], for I also [am become] as ye [are]. Ye did me no wrong:

¹²Soyez comme moi, car moi aussi je suis comme vous. Frères, je vous en supplie. Vous ne m'avez fait aucun tort.

¹²היו נא כמוני כי גם אני כמוכם מתחנן אני לכם אחי לא הרעתם לי מאומה׃

¹³but ye know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you the first time:

¹³Vous savez que ce fut à cause d'une infirmité de la chair que je vous ai pour la première fois annoncé l'Evangile.

¹³אתם ידעתם אשר בחלשת בשרי בשרתי לכם את הבשורה לראשונה׃

¹⁴and that which was a temptation to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received me as an angel of God, [even] as Christ Jesus.

¹⁴Et mis à l'épreuve par ma chair, vous n'avez témoigné ni mépris ni dégoût; vous m'avez, au contraire, reçu comme un ange de Dieu, comme Jésus-Christ.

¹⁴ואתם לא בזיתם את נסיוני אשר נסיתי בבשרי ולא געלתם אתו כי אם קבלתם אתי כמלאך אלהים כמשיח ישוע׃

¹⁵Where then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

¹⁵Où donc est l'expression de votre bonheur? Car je vous atteste que, si cela eût été possible, vous vous seriez arraché les yeux pour me les donner.

¹⁵ועתה איה אשרכם כי מעיד אני עליכם אשר אם יכלתם הייתם עקרים את עיניכם לתתן לי׃

¹⁶So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?

¹⁶Suis-je devenu votre ennemi en vous disant la vérité?

¹⁶ועתה הנהייתי לכם לאיב בדברי אמת אליכם׃

¹⁷They zealously seek you in no good way; nay, they desire to shut you out, that ye may seek them.

¹⁷Le zèle qu'ils ont pour vous n'est pas pur, mais ils veulent vous détacher de nous, afin que vous soyez zélés pour eux.

¹⁷אינם מקנאים לכם לטובה כי חפצם להפריד אתכם מעלינו למען תהיו מקנאים להם׃

¹⁸But it is good to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not only when I am present with you.

¹⁸Il est beau d'avoir du zèle pour ce qui est bien et en tout temps, et non pas seulement quand je suis présent parmi vous.

¹⁸אבל טוב לקנא תמיד לטובה ולא לבד בהיותו אצלכם׃

¹⁹My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you--

¹⁹Mes enfants, pour qui j'éprouve de nouveau les douleurs de l'enfantement, jusqu'à ce que Christ soit formé en vous,

¹⁹בני אשר אני מחולל שנית עד כי יוצר בכם המשיח׃

²⁰but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone; for I am perplexed about you.

²⁰je voudrais être maintenant auprès de vous, et changer de langage, car je suis dans l'inquiétude à votre sujet.

²⁰אמנה חפצתי להיות עתה אצלכם לשנות את קול דברי כי נבוך אני בכם׃

²¹Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

²¹Dites-moi, vous qui voulez être sous la loi, n'entendez-vous point la loi?

²¹אמרו לי אתם החפצים להיות משעבדים לתורה הלא שמעתם את התורה׃

²²For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

²²Car il est écrit qu'Abraham eut deux fils, un de la femme esclave, et un de la femme libre.

²²כי כתוב שהיו לאברהם שני בנים האחד מן האמה והשני מן החפשיה׃

²³Howbeit the [son] by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the [son] by the freewoman [is born] through promise.

²³Mais celui de l'esclave naquit selon la chair, et celui de la femme libre naquit en vertu de la promesse.

²³ואשר לאמה הוא נולד לפי הבשר ואשר לחפשיה על פי ההבטחה׃

²⁴Which things contain an allegory: for these [women] are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

²⁴Ces choses sont allégoriques; car ces femmes sont deux alliances. L'une du mont Sinaï, enfantant pour la servitude, c'est Agar, -

²⁴והדברים הם לרמז כי שתי הבריתות הנה האחת מן הר סיני היולדת לעבדות והיא הגר׃

²⁵Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

²⁵car Agar, c'est le mont Sinaï en Arabie, -et elle correspond à la Jérusalem actuelle, qui est dans la servitude avec ses enfants.

²⁵כי הגר סיני הר בערב הוא והוא כנגד ירושלים של עתה כי היא בעבדות עם בניה׃

²⁶But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

²⁶Mais la Jérusalem d'en haut est libre, c'est notre mère;

²⁶אבל ירושלים של מעלה היא חפשיה והיא אם כלנו׃

²⁷For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

²⁷car il est écrit: Réjouis-toi, stérile, toi qui n'enfantes point! Eclate et pousse des cris, toi qui n'as pas éprouvé les douleurs de l'enfantement! Car les enfants de la délaissée seront plus nombreux Que les enfants de celle qui était mariée.

²⁷כי כתוב רני עקרה לא ילדה פצחי רנה וצהלי לא חלה כי רבים בני שוממה מבני בעולה׃

²⁸Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

²⁸Pour vous, frères, comme Isaac, vous êtes enfants de la promesse;

²⁸ואנחנו אחי הננו כיצחק בני ההבטחה׃

²⁹But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, so also it is now.

²⁹et de même qu'alors celui qui était né selon la chair persécutait celui qui était né selon l'Esprit, ainsi en est-il encore maintenant.

²⁹וכאשר הנולד לפי הבשר אז היה רדף את הנולד לפי הרוח כן הוא גם עתה׃

³⁰Howbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

³⁰Mais que dit l'Ecriture? Chasse l'esclave et son fils, car le fils de l'esclave n'héritera pas avec le fils de la femme libre.

³⁰אבל הכתוב מה הוא אמר גרש האמה ואת בנה כי לא יירש בן האמה עם בן החפשיה׃

³¹Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.

³¹C'est pourquoi, frères, nous ne sommes pas enfants de l'esclave, mais de la femme libre.

³¹על כן אחי לא בני האמה אנחנו כי אם בני החפשיה׃
