¹The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

¹La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Eternel, en ces mots:

¹הדבר אשר היה אל ירמיהו מאת יהוה לאמר׃

²Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

²Lève-toi, et descends dans la maison du potier; Là, je te ferai entendre mes paroles.

²קום וירדת בית היוצר ושמה אשמיעך את דברי׃

³Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he was making a work on the wheels.

³Je descendis dans la maison du potier, Et voici, il travaillait sur un tour.

³וארד בית היוצר והנהו עשה מלאכה על האבנים׃

⁴And when the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

⁴Le vase qu'il faisait ne réussit pas, Comme il arrive à l'argile dans la main du potier; Il en refit un autre vase, Tel qu'il trouva bon de le faire.

⁴ונשחת הכלי אשר הוא עשה בחמר ביד היוצר ושב ויעשהו כלי אחר כאשר ישר בעיני היוצר לעשות׃

⁵Then the word of Jehovah came to me, saying,

⁵Et la parole de l'Eternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

⁵ויהי דבר יהוה אלי לאמור׃

⁶O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith Jehovah. Behold, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.

⁶Ne puis-je pas agir envers vous comme ce potier, maison d'Israël? Dit l'Eternel. Voici, comme l'argile est dans la main du potier, Ainsi vous êtes dans ma main, maison d'Israël!

⁶הכיוצר הזה לא אוכל לעשות לכם בית ישראל נאם יהוה הנה כחמר ביד היוצר כן אתם בידי בית ישראל׃

⁷At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it;

⁷Soudain je parle, sur une nation, sur un royaume, D'arracher, d'abattre et de détruire;

⁷רגע אדבר על גוי ועל ממלכה לנתוש ולנתוץ ולהאביד׃

⁸if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

⁸Mais si cette nation, sur laquelle j'ai parlé, revient de sa méchanceté, Je me repens du mal que j'avais pensé lui faire.

⁸ושב הגוי ההוא מרעתו אשר דברתי עליו ונחמתי על הרעה אשר חשבתי לעשות לו׃

⁹And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

⁹Et soudain je parle, sur une nation, sur un royaume, De bâtir et de planter;

⁹ורגע אדבר על גוי ועל ממלכה לבנת ולנטע׃

¹⁰if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

¹⁰Mais si cette nation fait ce qui est mal à mes yeux, Et n'écoute pas ma voix, Je me repens du bien que j'avais eu l'intention de lui faire.

¹⁰ועשה הרעה בעיני לבלתי שמע בקולי ונחמתי על הטובה אשר אמרתי להיטיב אותו׃

¹¹Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.

¹¹Parle maintenant aux hommes de Juda et aux habitants de Jérusalem, et dis: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, je prépare contre vous un malheur, Je médite un projet contre vous. Revenez chacun de votre mauvaise voie, Réformez vos voies et vos oeuvres!

¹¹ועתה אמר נא אל איש יהודה ועל יושבי ירושלם לאמר כה אמר יהוה הנה אנכי יוצר עליכם רעה וחשב עליכם מחשבה שובו נא איש מדרכו הרעה והיטיבו דרכיכם ומעלליכם׃

¹²But they say, It is in vain; for we will walk after our own devices, and we will do every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart.

¹²Mais ils disent: C'est en vain! Car nous suivrons nos pensées, Nous agirons chacun selon les penchants de notre mauvais coeur.

¹²ואמרו נואש כי אחרי מחשבותינו נלך ואיש שררות לבו הרע נעשה׃

¹³Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Ask ye now among the nations, who hath heard such things; the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

¹³C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Eternel: Interrogez les nations! Qui a jamais entendu pareilles choses? La vierge d'Israël a commis d'horribles excès.

¹³לכן כה אמר יהוה שאלו נא בגוים מי שמע כאלה שעררת עשתה מאד בתולת ישראל׃

¹⁴Shall the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? [or] shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?

¹⁴La neige du Liban abandonne-t-elle le rocher des champs? Ou voit-on tarir les eaux qui viennent de loin, fraîches et courantes?

¹⁴היעזב מצור שדי שלג לבנון אם ינתשו מים זרים קרים נוזלים׃

¹⁵For my people have forgotten me, they have burned incense to false [gods]; and they have been made to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in bypaths, in a way not cast up;

¹⁵Cependant mon peuple m'a oublié, il offre de l'encens à des idoles; Il a été conduit à chanceler dans ses voies, à quitter les anciens sentiers, Pour suivre des sentiers, des chemins non frayés.

¹⁵כי שכחני עמי לשוא יקטרו ויכשלום בדרכיהם שבילי עולם ללכת נתיבות דרך לא סלולה׃

¹⁶to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head.

¹⁶Ils ont fait de leur pays, un objet de désolation, d'éternelle moquerie; Tous ceux qui y passent sont stupéfaits et secouent la tête.

¹⁶לשום ארצם לשמה שרוקת עולם כל עובר עליה ישם ויניד בראשו׃

¹⁷I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

¹⁷Pareil au vent d'orient, je les disperserai devant l'ennemi; Je leur tournerai le dos, je ne les regarderai pas au jour de leur détresse.

¹⁷כרוח קדים אפיצם לפני אויב ערף ולא פנים אראם ביום אידם׃

¹⁸Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

¹⁸Et ils ont dit: Venez, complotons contre Jérémie! Car la loi ne périra pas faute de sacrificateurs, Ni le conseil faute de sages, ni la parole faute de prophètes. Venez, tuons-le avec la langue; Ne prenons pas garde à tous ses discours!

¹⁸ויאמרו לכו ונחשבה על ירמיהו מחשבות כי לא תאבד תורה מכהן ועצה מחכם ודבר מנביא לכו ונכהו בלשון ואל נקשיבה אל כל דבריו׃

¹⁹Give heed to me, O Jehovah, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

¹⁹Ecoute-moi, Eternel! Et entends la voix de mes adversaires!

¹⁹הקשיבה יהוה אלי ושמע לקול יריבי׃

²⁰Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them.

²⁰Le mal sera-t-il rendu pour le bien? Car ils ont creusé une fosse pour m'ôter la vie. Souviens-t'en, je me suis tenu devant toi, Afin de parler en leur faveur, Et de détourner d'eux ta colère.

²⁰הישלם תחת טובה רעה כי כרו שוחה לנפשי זכר עמדי לפניך לדבר עליהם טובה להשיב את חמתך מהם׃

²¹Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, [and] their young men smitten of the sword in battle.

²¹C'est pourquoi livre leurs enfants à la famine, Précipite-les par le glaive; Que leurs femmes soient privées d'enfants et deviennent veuves, Et que leurs maris soient enlevés par la peste; Que leurs jeunes gens soient frappés par l'épée dans le combat!

²¹לכן תן את בניהם לרעב והגרם על ידי חרב ותהינה נשיהם שכלות ואלמנות ואנשיהם יהיו הרגי מות בחוריהם מכי חרב במלחמה׃

²²Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

²²Qu'on entende des cris sortir de leurs maisons, Quand soudain tu feras fondre sur eux des bandes armées! Car ils ont creusé une fosse pour me prendre, Ils ont tendu des filets sous mes pieds.

²²תשמע זעקה מבתיהם כי תביא עליהם גדוד פתאם כי כרו שיחה ללכדני ופחים טמנו לרגלי׃

²³Yet, Jehovah, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me; forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight; but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thou with them in the time of thine anger.

²³Et toi, Eternel, tu connais tous leurs complots pour me faire mourir; Ne pardonne pas leur iniquité, N'efface pas leur péché de devant toi! Qu'ils soient renversés en ta présence! Agis contre eux au temps de ta colère!

²³ואתה יהוה ידעת את כל עצתם עלי למות אל תכפר על עונם וחטאתם מלפניך אל תמחי והיו מכשלים לפניך בעת אפך עשה בהם׃
