¹The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar.

¹La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Eternel, la dixième année de Sédécias, roi de Juda. -C'était la dix-huitième année de Nebucadnetsar.

¹הדבר אשר היה אל ירמיהו מאת יהוה בשנת העשרית לצדקיהו מלך יהודה היא השנה שמנה עשרה שנה לנבוכדראצר׃

²Now at that time the king of Babylon's army was besieging Jerusalem; and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah's house.

²L'armée du roi de Babylone assiégeait alors Jérusalem; et Jérémie, le prophète, était enfermé dans la cour de la prison qui était dans la maison du roi de Juda.

²ואז חיל מלך בבל צרים על ירושלם וירמיהו הנביא היה כלוא בחצר המטרה אשר בית מלך יהודה׃

³For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;

³Sédécias, roi de Juda, l'avait fait enfermer, et lui avait dit: Pourquoi prophétises-tu, en disant: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, je livre cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone, et il la prendra;

³אשר כלאו צדקיהו מלך יהודה לאמר מדוע אתה נבא לאמר כה אמר יהוה הנני נתן את העיר הזאת ביד מלך בבל ולכדה׃

⁴and Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes;

⁴Sédécias, roi de Juda, n'échappera pas aux Chaldéens, mais il sera livré entre les mains du roi de Babylone, il lui parlera bouche à bouche, et ses yeux verront ses yeux;

⁴וצדקיהו מלך יהודה לא ימלט מיד הכשדים כי הנתן ינתן ביד מלך בבל ודבר פיו עם פיו ועיניו את עינו תראינה׃

⁵and he shall bring Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith Jehovah: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper?

⁵le roi de Babylone emmènera Sédécias à Babylone, où il restera jusqu'à ce que je me souvienne de lui, dit l'Eternel; si vous vous battez contre les Chaldéens, vous n'aurez point de succès.

⁵ובבל יולך את צדקיהו ושם יהיה עד פקדי אתו נאם יהוה כי תלחמו את הכשדים לא תצליחו׃

⁶And Jeremiah said, The word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

⁶Jérémie dit: La parole de l'Eternel m'a été adressée, en ces mots:

⁶ויאמר ירמיהו היה דבר יהוה אלי לאמר׃

⁷Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth; for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.

⁷Voici, Hanameel, fils de ton oncle Schallum, va venir auprès de toi pour te dire: Achète mon champ qui est à Anathoth, car tu as le droit de rachat pour l'acquérir.

⁷הנה חנמאל בן שלם דדך בא אליך לאמר קנה לך את שדי אשר בענתות כי לך משפט הגאלה לקנות׃

⁸So Hanamel mine uncle's son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of Jehovah, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of Jehovah.

⁸Et Hanameel, fils de mon oncle, vint auprès de moi, selon la parole de l'Eternel, dans la cour de la prison, et il me dit: Achète mon champ, qui est à Anathoth, dans le pays de Benjamin, car tu as le droit d'héritage et de rachat, achète-le! Je reconnus que c'était la parole de l'Eternel.

⁸ויבא אלי חנמאל בן דדי כדבר יהוה אל חצר המטרה ויאמר אלי קנה נא את שדי אשר בענתות אשר בארץ בנימין כי לך משפט הירשה ולך הגאלה קנה לך ואדע כי דבר יהוה הוא׃

⁹And I bought the field that was in Anathoth of Hanamel mine uncle's son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.

⁹J'achetai de Hanameel, fils de mon oncle, le champ qui est à Anathoth, et je lui pesai l'argent, dix-sept sicles d'argent.

⁹ואקנה את השדה מאת חנמאל בן דדי אשר בענתות ואשקלה לו את הכסף שבעה שקלים ועשרה הכסף׃

¹⁰And I subscribed the deed, and sealed it, and called witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.

¹⁰J'écrivis un contrat, que je cachetai, je pris des témoins, et je pesai l'argent dans une balance.

¹⁰ואכתב בספר ואחתם ואעד עדים ואשקל הכסף במאזנים׃

¹¹So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, [according to] the law and custom, and that which was open:

¹¹Je pris ensuite le contrat d'acquisition, celui qui était cacheté, conformément à la loi et aux usages, et celui qui était ouvert;

¹¹ואקח את ספר המקנה את החתום המצוה והחקים ואת הגלוי׃

¹²and I delivered the deed of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel mine uncle's [son], and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the deed of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the guard.

¹²et je remis le contrat d'acquisition à Baruc, fils de Nérija, fils de Machséja, en présence de Hanameel, fils de mon oncle, en présence des témoins qui avaient signé le contrat d'acquisition, et en présence de tous les juifs qui se trouvaient dans la cour de la prison.

¹²ואתן את הספר המקנה אל ברוך בן נריה בן מחסיה לעיני חנמאל דדי ולעיני העדים הכתבים בספר המקנה לעיני כל היהודים הישבים בחצר המטרה׃

¹³And I charged Baruch before them, saying,

¹³Et je donnai devant eux cet ordre à Baruc:

¹³ואצוה את ברוך לעיניהם לאמר׃

¹⁴Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel; that they may continue many days.

¹⁴Ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: Prends ces écrits, ce contrat d'acquisition, celui qui est cacheté et celui qui est ouvert, et mets-les dans un vase de terre, afin qu'ils se conservent longtemps.

¹⁴כה אמר יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל לקוח את הספרים האלה את ספר המקנה הזה ואת החתום ואת ספר הגלוי הזה ונתתם בכלי חרש למען יעמדו ימים רבים׃

¹⁵For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall yet again be bought in this land.

¹⁵Car ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: On achètera encore des maisons, des champs et des vignes, dans ce pays.

¹⁵כי כה אמר יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל עוד יקנו בתים ושדות וכרמים בארץ הזאת׃

¹⁶Now after I had delivered the deed of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto Jehovah, saying,

¹⁶Après que j'eus remis le contrat d'acquisition à Baruc, fils de Nérija, j'adressai cette prière à l'Eternel:

¹⁶ואתפלל אל יהוה אחרי תתי את ספר המקנה אל ברוך בן נריה לאמר׃

¹⁷Ah Lord Jehovah! behold, thou hast made the heavens and the earth by thy great power and by thine outstretched arm; there is nothing too hard for thee,

¹⁷Ah! Seigneur Eternel, Voici, tu as fait les cieux et la terre Par ta grande puissance et par ton bras étendu: Rien n'est étonnant de ta part.

¹⁷אהה אדני יהוה הנה אתה עשית את השמים ואת הארץ בכחך הגדול ובזרעך הנטויה לא יפלא ממך כל דבר׃

¹⁸who showest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them; the great, the mighty God, Jehovah of hosts is his name;

¹⁸Tu fais miséricorde jusqu'à la millième génération, Et tu punis l'iniquité des pères dans le sein de leurs enfants après eux. Tu es le Dieu grand, le puissant, Dont le nom est l'Eternel des armées.

¹⁸עשה חסד לאלפים ומשלם עון אבות אל חיק בניהם אחריהם האל הגדול הגבור יהוה צבאות שמו׃

¹⁹great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men, to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

¹⁹Tu es grand en conseil et puissant en action; Tu as les yeux ouverts sur toutes les voies des enfants des hommes, Pour rendre à chacun selon ses voies, Selon le fruit de ses oeuvres.

¹⁹גדל העצה ורב העליליה אשר עיניך פקחות על כל דרכי בני אדם לתת לאיש כדרכיו וכפרי מעלליו׃

²⁰who didst set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, both in Israel and among [other] men; and madest thee a name, as at this day;

²⁰Tu as fait des miracles et des prodiges dans le pays d'Egypte jusqu'à ce jour, Et en Israël et parmi les hommes, Et tu t'es fait un nom comme il l'est aujourd'hui.

²⁰אשר שמת אתות ומפתים בארץ מצרים עד היום הזה ובישראל ובאדם ותעשה לך שם כיום הזה׃

²¹and didst bring forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terror;

²¹Tu as fait sortir du pays d'Egypte ton peuple d'Israël, Avec des miracles et des prodiges, à main forte et à bras étendu, Et avec une grande terreur.

²¹ותצא את עמך את ישראל מארץ מצרים באתות ובמופתים וביד חזקה ובאזרוע נטויה ובמורא גדול׃

²²and gavest them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;

²²Tu leur as donné ce pays, Que tu avais juré à leurs pères de leur donner, Pays où coulent le lait et le miel.

²²ותתן להם את הארץ הזאת אשר נשבעת לאבותם לתת להם ארץ זבת חלב ודבש׃

²³and they came in, and possessed it, but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them.

²³Ils sont venus, et ils en ont pris possession. Mais ils n'ont point obéi à ta voix, Ils n'ont point observé ta loi, Ils n'ont pas fait tout ce que tu leur avais ordonné de faire. Et c'est alors que tu as fait fondre sur eux tous ces malheurs!

²³ויבאו וירשו אתה ולא שמעו בקולך ובתרותך לא הלכו את כל אשר צויתה להם לעשות לא עשו ותקרא אתם את כל הרעה הזאת׃

²⁴Behold, the mounds, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence; and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.

²⁴Voici, les terrasses s'élèvent contre la ville et la menacent; La ville sera livrée entre les mains des Chaldéens qui l'attaquent, Vaincue par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste. Ce que tu as dit est arrivé, et tu le vois.

²⁴הנה הסללות באו העיר ללכדה והעיר נתנה ביד הכשדים הנלחמים עליה מפני החרב והרעב והדבר ואשר דברת היה והנך ראה׃

²⁵And thou hast said unto me, O Lord Jehovah, Buy thee the field for money, and call witnesses; whereas the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

²⁵Néanmoins, Seigneur Eternel, tu m'as dit: Achète un champ pour de l'argent, prends des témoins... Et la ville est livrée entre les mains des Chaldéens!

²⁵ואתה אמרת אלי אדני יהוה קנה לך השדה בכסף והעד עדים והעיר נתנה ביד הכשדים׃

²⁶Then came the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah, saying,

²⁶La parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie, en ces mots:

²⁶ויהי דבר יהוה אל ירמיהו לאמר׃

²⁷Behold, I am Jehovah, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?

²⁷Voici, je suis l'Eternel, le Dieu de toute chair. Y a-t-il rien qui soit étonnant de ma part?

²⁷הנה אני יהוה אלהי כל בשר הממני יפלא כל דבר׃

²⁸Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:

²⁸C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, je livre cette ville entre les mains des Chaldéens, Et entre les mains de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, Et il la prendra.

²⁸לכן כה אמר יהוה הנני נתן את העיר הזאת ביד הכשדים וביד נבוכדראצר מלך בבל ולכדה׃

²⁹and the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set this city on fire, and burn it, with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink-offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.

²⁹Les Chaldéens qui attaquent cette ville vont entrer, Ils y mettront le feu, et ils la brûleront, Avec les maisons sur les toits desquelles on a offert de l'encens à Baal Et fait des libations à d'autres dieux, Afin de m'irriter.

²⁹ובאו הכשדים הנלחמים על העיר הזאת והציתו את העיר הזאת באש ושרפוה ואת הבתים אשר קטרו על גגותיהם לבעל והסכו נסכים לאלהים אחרים למען הכעסני׃

³⁰For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done only that which was evil in my sight from their youth; for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith Jehovah.

³⁰Car les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda N'ont fait, dès leur jeunesse, que ce qui est mal à mes yeux; Les enfants d'Israël n'ont fait que m'irriter Par l'oeuvre de leurs mains, dit l'Eternel.

³⁰כי היו בני ישראל ובני יהודה אך עשים הרע בעיני מנערתיהם כי בני ישראל אך מכעסים אתי במעשה ידיהם נאם יהוה׃

³¹For this city hath been to me a provocation of mine anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,

³¹Car cette ville excite ma colère et ma fureur, Depuis le jour où on l'a bâtie jusqu'à ce jour; Aussi je veux l'ôter de devant ma face,

³¹כי על אפי ועל חמתי היתה לי העיר הזאת למן היום אשר בנו אותה ועד היום הזה להסירה מעל פני׃

³²because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

³²A cause de tout le mal que les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda Ont fait pour m'irriter, Eux, leurs rois, leurs chefs, leurs sacrificateurs et leurs prophètes, Les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem.

³²על כל רעת בני ישראל ובני יהודה אשר עשו להכעסני המה מלכיהם שריהם כהניהם ונביאיהם ואיש יהודה וישבי ירושלם׃

³³And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: and though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.

³³Ils m'ont tourné le dos, ils ne m'ont pas regardé; On les a enseignés, on les a enseignés dès le matin; Mais ils n'ont pas écouté pour recevoir instruction.

³³ויפנו אלי ערף ולא פנים ולמד אתם השכם ולמד ואינם שמעים לקחת מוסר׃

³⁴But they set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.

³⁴Ils ont placé leurs abominations Dans la maison sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué, Afin de la souiller.

³⁴וישימו שקוציהם בבית אשר נקרא שמי עליו לטמאו׃

³⁵And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through [the fire] unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

³⁵Ils ont bâti des hauts lieux à Baal dans la vallée de Ben-Hinnom, Pour faire passer à Moloc leurs fils et leurs filles: Ce que je ne leur avais point ordonné; Et il ne m'était point venu à la pensée Qu'ils commettraient de telles horreurs Pour faire pécher Juda.

³⁵ויבנו את במות הבעל אשר בגיא בן הנם להעביר את בניהם ואת בנותיהם למלך אשר לא צויתים ולא עלתה על לבי לעשות התועבה הזאת למען החטי את יהודה׃

³⁶And now therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence:

³⁶Et maintenant, ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, Sur cette ville dont vous dites: Elle sera livrée entre les mains du roi de Babylone, Vaincue par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste:

³⁶ועתה לכן כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל אל העיר הזאת אשר אתם אמרים נתנה ביד מלך בבל בחרב וברעב ובדבר׃

³⁷Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

³⁷Voici, je les rassemblerai de tous les pays où je les ai chassés, Dans ma colère, dans ma fureur, et dans ma grande irritation; Je les ramènerai dans ce lieu, Et je les y ferai habiter en sûreté.

³⁷הנני מקבצם מכל הארצות אשר הדחתים שם באפי ובחמתי ובקצף גדול והשבתים אל המקום הזה והשבתים לבטח׃

³⁸and they shall be my people, and I will be their God:

³⁸Ils seront mon peuple, Et je serai leur Dieu.

³⁸והיו לי לעם ואני אהיה להם לאלהים׃

³⁹and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:

³⁹Je leur donnerai un même coeur et une même voie, Afin qu'ils me craignent toujours, Pour leur bonheur et celui de leurs enfants après eux.

³⁹ונתתי להם לב אחד ודרך אחד ליראה אותי כל הימים לטוב להם ולבניהם אחריהם׃

⁴⁰and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.

⁴⁰Je traiterai avec eux une alliance éternelle, Je ne me détournerai plus d'eux, Je leur ferai du bien, Et je mettrai ma crainte dans leur coeur, Afin qu'ils ne s'éloignent pas de moi.

⁴⁰וכרתי להם ברית עולם אשר לא אשוב מאחריהם להיטיבי אותם ואת יראתי אתן בלבבם לבלתי סור מעלי׃

⁴¹Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.

⁴¹Je prendrai plaisir à leur faire du bien, Et je les planterai véritablement dans ce pays, De tout mon coeur et de toute mon âme.

⁴¹וששתי עליהם להטיב אותם ונטעתים בארץ הזאת באמת בכל לבי ובכל נפשי׃

⁴²For thus saith Jehovah: Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

⁴²Car ainsi parle l'Eternel: De même que j'ai fait venir sur ce peuple tous ces grands malheurs, De même je ferai venir sur eux tout le bien que je leur promets.

⁴²כי כה אמר יהוה כאשר הבאתי אל העם הזה את כל הרעה הגדולה הזאת כן אנכי מביא עליהם את כל הטובה אשר אנכי דבר עליהם׃

⁴³And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate, without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

⁴³On achètera des champs dans ce pays Dont vous dites: C'est un désert, sans hommes ni bêtes, Il est livré entre les mains des Chaldéens.

⁴³ונקנה השדה בארץ הזאת אשר אתם אמרים שממה היא מאין אדם ובהמה נתנה ביד הכשדים׃

⁴⁴Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe the deeds, and seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill-country, and in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith Jehovah.

⁴⁴On achètera des champs pour de l'argent, On écrira des contrats, on les cachètera, on prendra des témoins, Dans le pays de Benjamin et aux environs de Jérusalem, Dans les villes de Juda, dans les villes de la montagne, Dans les villes de la plaine et dans les villes du midi; Car je ramènerai leurs captifs, dit l'Eternel.

⁴⁴שדות בכסף יקנו וכתוב בספר וחתום והעד עדים בארץ בנימן ובסביבי ירושלם ובערי יהודה ובערי ההר ובערי השפלה ובערי הנגב כי אשיב את שבותם נאם יהוה׃
