¹The word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these word in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying,

¹La parole que Jérémie, le prophète, adressa à Baruc, fils de Nérija, lorsqu'il écrivit dans un livre ces paroles, sous la dictée de Jérémie, la quatrième année de Jojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda. Il dit:

¹הדבר אשר דבר ירמיהו הנביא אל ברוך בן נריה בכתבו את הדברים האלה על ספר מפי ירמיהו בשנה הרבעית ליהויקים בן יאשיהו מלך יהודה לאמר׃

²Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, unto thee, O Baruch:

²Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, sur toi, Baruc:

²כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל עליך ברוך׃

³Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for Jehovah hath added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.

³Tu dis: Malheur à moi! car l'Eternel ajoute le chagrin à ma douleur; je m'épuise en soupirant, et je ne trouve point de repos.

³אמרת אוי נא לי כי יסף יהוה יגון על מכאבי יגעתי באנחתי ומנוחה לא מצאתי׃

⁴Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land.

⁴Dis-lui: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, ce que j'ai bâti, je le détruirai; ce que j'ai planté, je l'arracherai, savoir tout ce pays.

⁴כה תאמר אליו כה אמר יהוה הנה אשר בניתי אני הרס ואת אשר נטעתי אני נתש ואת כל הארץ היא׃

⁵And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not; for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith Jehovah; but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

⁵Et toi, rechercherais-tu de grandes choses? Ne les recherche pas! Car voici, je vais faire venir le malheur sur toute chair, dit l'Eternel; et je te donnerai ta vie pour butin, dans tous les lieux où tu iras.

⁵ואתה תבקש לך גדלות אל תבקש כי הנני מביא רעה על כל בשר נאם יהוה ונתתי לך את נפשך לשלל על כל המקמות אשר תלך שם׃
