¹Man, that is born of a woman, Is of few days, and full of trouble.

¹L'homme né de la femme! Sa vie est courte, sans cesse agitée.

¹אדם ילוד אשה קצר ימים ושבע רגז׃

²He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

²Il naît, il est coupé comme une fleur; Il fuit et disparaît comme une ombre.

²כציץ יצא וימל ויברח כצל ולא יעמוד׃

³And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, And bringest me into judgment with thee?

³Et c'est sur lui que tu as l'oeil ouvert! Et tu me fais aller en justice avec toi!

³אף על זה פקחת עינך ואתי תביא במשפט עמך׃

⁴Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

⁴Comment d'un être souillé sortira-t-il un homme pur? Il n'en peut sortir aucun.

⁴מי יתן טהור מטמא לא אחד׃

⁵Seeing his days are determined, The number of his months is with thee, And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

⁵Si ses jours sont fixés, si tu as compté ses mois, Si tu en as marqué le terme qu'il ne saurait franchir,

⁵אם חרוצים ימיו מספר חדשיו אתך חקו עשית ולא יעבור׃

⁶Look away from him, that he may rest, Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

⁶Détourne de lui les regards, et donne-lui du relâche, Pour qu'il ait au moins la joie du mercenaire à la fin de sa journée.

⁶שעה מעליו ויחדל עד ירצה כשכיר יומו׃

⁷For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, that it will sprout again, And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

⁷Un arbre a de l'espérance: Quand on le coupe, il repousse, Il produit encore des rejetons;

⁷כי יש לעץ תקוה אם יכרת ועוד יחליף וינקתו לא תחדל׃

⁸Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, And the stock thereof die in the ground;

⁸Quand sa racine a vieilli dans la terre, Quand son tronc meurt dans la poussière,

⁸אם יזקין בארץ שרשו ובעפר ימות גזעו׃

⁹Yet through the scent of water it will bud, And put forth boughs like a plant.

⁹Il reverdit à l'approche de l'eau, Il pousse des branches comme une jeune plante.

⁹מריח מים יפרח ועשה קציר כמו נטע׃

¹⁰But man dieth, and is laid low: Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

¹⁰Mais l'homme meurt, et il perd sa force; L'homme expire, et où est-il?

¹⁰וגבר ימות ויחלש ויגוע אדם ואיו׃

¹¹[As] the waters fail from the sea, And the river wasteth and drieth up;

¹¹Les eaux des lacs s'évanouissent, Les fleuves tarissent et se dessèchent;

¹¹אזלו מים מני ים ונהר יחרב ויבש׃

¹²So man lieth down and riseth not: Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be roused out of their sleep.

¹²Ainsi l'homme se couche et ne se relèvera plus, Il ne se réveillera pas tant que les cieux subsisteront, Il ne sortira pas de son sommeil.

¹²ואיש שכב ולא יקום עד בלתי שמים לא יקיצו ולא יערו משנתם׃

¹³Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

¹³Oh! si tu voulais me cacher dans le séjour des morts, M'y tenir à couvert jusqu'à ce que ta colère fût passée, Et me fixer un terme auquel tu te souviendras de moi!

¹³מי יתן בשאול תצפנני תסתירני עד שוב אפך תשית לי חק ותזכרני׃

¹⁴If a man die, shall he live [again]? All the days of my warfare would I wait, Till my release should come.

¹⁴Si l'homme une fois mort pouvait revivre, J'aurais de l'espoir tout le temps de mes souffrances, Jusqu'à ce que mon état vînt à changer.

¹⁴אם ימות גבר היחיה כל ימי צבאי איחל עד בוא חליפתי׃

¹⁵Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee: Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.

¹⁵Tu appellerais alors, et je te répondrais, Tu languirais après l'ouvrage de tes mains.

¹⁵תקרא ואנכי אענך למעשה ידיך תכסף׃

¹⁶But now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?

¹⁶Mais aujourd'hui tu comptes mes pas, Tu as l'oeil sur mes péchés;

¹⁶כי עתה צעדי תספור לא תשמור על חטאתי׃

¹⁷My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And thou fastenest up mine iniquity.

¹⁷Mes transgressions sont scellées en un faisceau, Et tu imagines des iniquités à ma charge.

¹⁷חתם בצרור פשעי ותטפל על עוני׃

¹⁸But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place;

¹⁸La montagne s'écroule et périt, Le rocher disparaît de sa place,

¹⁸ואולם הר נופל יבול וצור יעתק ממקמו׃

¹⁹The waters wear the stones; The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth: So thou destroyest the hope of man.

¹⁹La pierre est broyée par les eaux, Et la terre emportée par leur courant; Ainsi tu détruis l'espérance de l'homme.

¹⁹אבנים שחקו מים תשטף ספיחיה עפר ארץ ותקות אנוש האבדת׃

²⁰Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

²⁰Tu es sans cesse à l'assaillir, et il s'en va; Tu le défigures, puis tu le renvoies.

²⁰תתקפהו לנצח ויהלך משנה פניו ותשלחהו׃

²¹His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

²¹Que ses fils soient honorés, il n'en sait rien; Qu'ils soient dans l'abaissement, il l'ignore.

²¹יכבדו בניו ולא ידע ויצערו ולא יבין למו׃

²²But his flesh upon him hath pain, And his soul within him mourneth.

²²C'est pour lui seul qu'il éprouve de la douleur en son corps, C'est pour lui seul qu'il ressent de la tristesse en son âme.

²²אך בשרו עליו יכאב ונפשו עליו תאבל׃
