¹Then Job answered and said,

¹Job prit la parole et dit:

¹ויען איוב ויאמר׃

²I have heard many such things: Miserable comforters are ye all.

²J'ai souvent entendu pareilles choses; Vous êtes tous des consolateurs fâcheux.

²שמעתי כאלה רבות מנחמי עמל כלכם׃

³Shall vain words have an end? Or what provoketh thee that thou answerest?

³Quand finiront ces discours en l'air? Pourquoi cette irritation dans tes réponses?

³הקץ לדברי רוח או מה ימריצך כי תענה׃

⁴I also could speak as ye do; If your soul were in my soul's stead, I could join words together against you, And shake my head at you.

⁴Moi aussi, je pourrais parler comme vous, Si vous étiez à ma place: Je vous accablerais de paroles, Je secouerais sur vous la tête,

⁴גם אנכי ככם אדברה לו יש נפשכם תחת נפשי אחבירה עליכם במלים ואניעה עליכם במו ראשי׃

⁵[But] I would strengthen you with my mouth, And the solace of my lips would assuage [your grief].

⁵Je vous fortifierais de la bouche, Je remuerais les lèvres pour vous soulager.

⁵אאמצכם במו פי וניד שפתי יחשך׃

⁶Though I speak, my grief is not assuaged; And though I forbear, what am I eased?

⁶Si je parle, mes souffrances ne seront point calmées, Si je me tais, en quoi seront-elles moindres?

⁶אם אדברה לא יחשך כאבי ואחדלה מה מני יהלך׃

⁷But now he hath made me weary: Thou hast made desolate all my company.

⁷Maintenant, hélas! il m'a épuisé... Tu as ravagé toute ma maison;

⁷אך עתה הלאני השמות כל עדתי׃

⁸And thou hast laid fast hold on me, [which] is a witness [against me]: And my leanness riseth up against me, It testifieth to my face.

⁸Tu m'as saisi, pour témoigner contre moi; Ma maigreur se lève, et m'accuse en face.

⁸ותקמטני לעד היה ויקם בי כחשי בפני יענה׃

⁹He hath torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me; He hath gnashed upon me with his teeth: Mine adversary sharpeneth his eyes upon me.

⁹Il me déchire et me poursuit dans sa fureur, Il grince des dents contre moi, Il m'attaque et me perce de son regard.

⁹אפו טרף וישטמני חרק עלי בשניו צרי ילטוש עיניו לי׃

¹⁰They have gaped upon me with their mouth; They have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully: They gather themselves together against me.

¹⁰Ils ouvrent la bouche pour me dévorer, Ils m'insultent et me frappent les joues, Ils s'acharnent tous après moi.

¹⁰פערו עלי בפיהם בחרפה הכו לחיי יחד עלי יתמלאון׃

¹¹God delivereth me to the ungodly, And casteth me into the hands of the wicked.

¹¹Dieu me livre à la merci des impies, Il me précipite entre les mains des méchants.

¹¹יסגירני אל אל עויל ועל ידי רשעים ירטני׃

¹²I was at ease, and he brake me asunder; Yea, he hath taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces: He hath also set me up for his mark.

¹²J'étais tranquille, et il m'a secoué, Il m'a saisi par la nuque et m'a brisé, Il a tiré sur moi comme à un but.

¹²שלו הייתי ויפרפרני ואחז בערפי ויפצפצני ויקימני לו למטרה׃

¹³His archers compass me round about; He cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; He poureth out my gall upon the ground.

¹³Ses traits m'environnent de toutes parts; Il me perce les reins sans pitié, Il répand ma bile sur la terre.

¹³יסבו עלי רביו יפלח כליותי ולא יחמול ישפך לארץ מררתי׃

¹⁴He breaketh me with breach upon breach; He runneth upon me like a giant.

¹⁴Il me fait brèche sur brèche, Il fond sur moi comme un guerrier.

¹⁴יפרצני פרץ על פני פרץ ירץ עלי כגבור׃

¹⁵I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, And have laid my horn in the dust.

¹⁵J'ai cousu un sac sur ma peau; J'ai roulé ma tête dans la poussière.

¹⁵שק תפרתי עלי גלדי ועללתי בעפר קרני׃

¹⁶My face is red with weeping, And on my eyelids is the shadow of death;

¹⁶Les pleurs ont altéré mon visage; L'ombre de la mort est sur mes paupières.

¹⁶פני חמרמרה מני בכי ועל עפעפי צלמות׃

¹⁷Although there is no violence in my hands, And my prayer is pure.

¹⁷Je n'ai pourtant commis aucune violence, Et ma prière fut toujours pure.

¹⁷על לא חמס בכפי ותפלתי זכה׃

¹⁸O earth, cover not thou my blood, And let my cry have no [resting] -place.

¹⁸O terre, ne couvre point mon sang, Et que mes cris prennent librement leur essor!

¹⁸ארץ אל תכסי דמי ואל יהי מקום לזעקתי׃

¹⁹Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And he that voucheth for me is on high.

¹⁹Déjà maintenant, mon témoin est dans le ciel, Mon témoin est dans les lieux élevés.

¹⁹גם עתה הנה בשמים עדי ושהדי במרומים׃

²⁰My friends scoff at me: [But] mine eye poureth out tears unto God,

²⁰Mes amis se jouent de moi; C'est Dieu que j'implore avec larmes.

²⁰מליצי רעי אל אלוה דלפה עיני׃

²¹That he would maintain the right of a man with God, And of a son of man with his neighbor!

²¹Puisse-t-il donner à l'homme raison contre Dieu, Et au fils de l'homme contre ses amis!

²¹ויוכח לגבר עם אלוה ובן אדם לרעהו׃

²²For when a few years are come, I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

²²Car le nombre de mes années touche à son terme, Et je m'en irai par un sentier d'où je ne reviendrai pas.

²²כי שנות מספר יאתיו וארח לא אשוב אהלך׃
