¹Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

¹Eliphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit:

¹ויען אליפז התמני ויאמר׃

²Can a man be profitable unto God? Surely he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

²Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu? Non; le sage n'est utile qu'à lui-même.

²הלאל יסכן גבר כי יסכן עלימו משכיל׃

³Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gain [to him], that thou makest thy ways perfect?

³Si tu es juste, est-ce à l'avantage du Tout-Puissant? Si tu es intègre dans tes voies, qu'y gagne-t-il?

³החפץ לשדי כי תצדק ואם בצע כי תתם דרכיך׃

⁴Is it for thy fear [of him] that he reproveth thee, That he entereth with thee into judgment?

⁴Est-ce par crainte de toi qu'il te châtie, Qu'il entre en jugement avec toi?

⁴המיראתך יכיחך יבוא עמך במשפט׃

⁵Is not thy wickedness great? Neither is there any end to thine iniquities.

⁵Ta méchanceté n'est-elle pas grande? Tes iniquités ne sont-elles pas infinies?

⁵הלא רעתך רבה ואין קץ לעונתיך׃

⁶For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, And stripped the naked of their clothing.

⁶Tu enlevais sans motif des gages à tes frères, Tu privais de leurs vêtements ceux qui étaient nus;

⁶כי תחבל אחיך חנם ובגדי ערומים תפשיט׃

⁷Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, And thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

⁷Tu ne donnais point d'eau à l'homme altéré, Tu refusais du pain à l'homme affamé.

⁷לא מים עיף תשקה ומרעב תמנע לחם׃

⁸But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; And the honorable man, he dwelt in it.

⁸Le pays était au plus fort, Et le puissant s'y établissait.

⁸ואיש זרוע לו הארץ ונשוא פנים ישב בה׃

⁹Thou hast sent widows away empty, And the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁹Tu renvoyais les veuves à vide; Les bras des orphelins étaient brisés.

⁹אלמנות שלחת ריקם וזרעות יתמים ידכא׃

¹⁰Therefore snares are round about thee, And sudden fear troubleth thee,

¹⁰C'est pour cela que tu es entouré de pièges, Et que la terreur t'a saisi tout à coup.

¹⁰על כן סביבותיך פחים ויבהלך פחד פתאם׃

¹¹Or darkness, so that thou canst not see, And abundance of waters cover thee.

¹¹Ne vois-tu donc pas ces ténèbres, Ces eaux débordées qui t'envahissent?

¹¹או חשך לא תראה ושפעת מים תכסך׃

¹²Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

¹²Dieu n'est-il pas en haut dans les cieux? Regarde le sommet des étoiles, comme il est élevé!

¹²הלא אלוה גבה שמים וראה ראש כוכבים כי רמו׃

¹³And thou sayest, What doth God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?

¹³Et tu dis: Qu'est-ce que Dieu sait? Peut-il juger à travers l'obscurité?

¹³ואמרת מה ידע אל הבעד ערפל ישפוט׃

¹⁴Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he seeth not; And he walketh on the vault of heaven.

¹⁴Les nuées l'enveloppent, et il ne voit rien; Il ne parcourt que la voûte des cieux.

¹⁴עבים סתר לו ולא יראה וחוג שמים יתהלך׃

¹⁵Wilt thou keep the old way Which wicked men have trodden?

¹⁵Eh quoi! tu voudrais prendre l'ancienne route Qu'ont suivie les hommes d'iniquité?

¹⁵הארח עולם תשמר אשר דרכו מתי און׃

¹⁶Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

¹⁶Ils ont été emportés avant le temps, Ils ont eu la durée d'un torrent qui s'écoule.

¹⁶אשר קמטו ולא עת נהר יוצק יסודם׃

¹⁷Who said unto God, Depart from us; And, What can the Almighty do for us?

¹⁷Ils disaient à Dieu: Retire-toi de nous; Que peut faire pour nous le Tout-Puissant?

¹⁷האמרים לאל סור ממנו ומה יפעל שדי למו׃

¹⁸Yet he filled their houses with good things: But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁸Dieu cependant avait rempli de biens leurs maisons. -Loin de moi le conseil des méchants!

¹⁸והוא מלא בתיהם טוב ועצת רשעים רחקה מני׃

¹⁹The righteous see it, and are glad; And the innocent laugh them to scorn,

¹⁹Les justes, témoins de leur chute, se réjouiront, Et l'innocent se moquera d'eux:

¹⁹יראו צדיקים וישמחו ונקי ילעג למו׃

²⁰[Saying], Surely they that did rise up against us are cut off, And the remnant of them the fire hath consumed.

²⁰Voilà nos adversaires anéantis! Voilà leurs richesses dévorées par le feu!

²⁰אם לא נכחד קימנו ויתרם אכלה אש׃

²¹Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: Thereby good shall come unto thee.

²¹Attache-toi donc à Dieu, et tu auras la paix; Tu jouiras ainsi du bonheur.

²¹הסכן נא עמו ושלם בהם תבואתך טובה׃

²²Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, And lay up his words in thy heart.

²²Reçois de sa bouche l'instruction, Et mets dans ton coeur ses paroles.

²²קח נא מפיו תורה ושים אמריו בלבבך׃

²³If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, If thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents.

²³Tu seras rétabli, si tu reviens au Tout-Puissant, Si tu éloignes l'iniquité de ta tente.

²³אם תשוב עד שדי תבנה תרחיק עולה מאהלך׃

²⁴And lay thou [thy] treasure in the dust, And [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the brooks;

²⁴Jette l'or dans la poussière, L'or d'Ophir parmi les cailloux des torrents;

²⁴ושית על עפר בצר ובצור נחלים אופיר׃

²⁵And the Almighty will be thy treasure, And precious silver unto thee.

²⁵Et le Tout-Puissant sera ton or, Ton argent, ta richesse.

²⁵והיה שדי בצריך וכסף תועפות לך׃

²⁶For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, And shalt lift up thy face unto God.

²⁶Alors tu feras du Tout-Puissant tes délices, Tu élèveras vers Dieu ta face;

²⁶כי אז על שדי תתענג ותשא אל אלוה פניך׃

²⁷Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee; And thou shalt pay thy vows.

²⁷Tu le prieras, et il t'exaucera, Et tu accompliras tes voeux.

²⁷תעתיר אליו וישמעך ונדריך תשלם׃

²⁸Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; And light shall shine upon thy ways.

²⁸A tes résolutions répondra le succès; Sur tes sentiers brillera la lumière.

²⁸ותגזר אומר ויקם לך ועל דרכיך נגה אור׃

²⁹When they cast [thee] down, thou shalt say, [There is] lifting up; And the humble person he will save.

²⁹Vienne l'humiliation, tu prieras pour ton relèvement: Dieu secourt celui dont le regard est abattu.

²⁹כי השפילו ותאמר גוה ושח עינים יושע׃

³⁰He will deliver [even] him that is not innocent: Yea, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands.

³⁰Il délivrera même le coupable, Qui devra son salut à la pureté de tes mains.

³⁰ימלט אי נקי ונמלט בבר כפיך׃
