¹And Job again took up his parable, and said,

¹Job prit de nouveau la parole sous forme sentencieuse et dit:

¹ויסף איוב שאת משלו ויאמר׃

²Oh that I were as in the months of old, As in the days when God watched over me;

²Oh! que ne puis-je être comme aux mois du passé, Comme aux jours où Dieu me gardait,

²מי יתנני כירחי קדם כימי אלוה ישמרני׃

³When his lamp shined upon my head, And by his light I walked through darkness;

³Quand sa lampe brillait sur ma tête, Et que sa lumière me guidait dans les ténèbres!

³בהלו נרו עלי ראשי לאורו אלך חשך׃

⁴As I was in the ripeness of my days, When the friendship of God was upon my tent;

⁴Que ne suis-je comme aux jours de ma vigueur, Où Dieu veillait en ami sur ma tente,

⁴כאשר הייתי בימי חרפי בסוד אלוה עלי אהלי׃

⁵When the Almighty was yet with me, And my children were about me;

⁵Quand le Tout-Puissant était encore avec moi, Et que mes enfants m'entouraient;

⁵בעוד שדי עמדי סביבותי נערי׃

⁶When my steps were washed with butter, And the rock poured me out streams of oil!

⁶Quand mes pieds se baignaient dans la crème Et que le rocher répandait près de moi des ruisseaux d'huile!

⁶ברחץ הליכי בחמה וצור יצוק עמדי פלגי שמן׃

⁷When I went forth to the gate unto the city, When I prepared my seat in the street,

⁷Si je sortais pour aller à la porte de la ville, Et si je me faisais préparer un siège dans la place,

⁷בצאתי שער עלי קרת ברחוב אכין מושבי׃

⁸The young men saw me and hid themselves, And the aged rose up and stood;

⁸Les jeunes gens se retiraient à mon approche, Les vieillards se levaient et se tenaient debout.

⁸ראוני נערים ונחבאו וישישים קמו עמדו׃

⁹The princes refrained from talking, And laid their hand on their mouth;

⁹Les princes arrêtaient leurs discours, Et mettaient la main sur leur bouche;

⁹שרים עצרו במלים וכף ישימו לפיהם׃

¹⁰The voice of the nobles was hushed, And their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

¹⁰La voix des chefs se taisait, Et leur langue s'attachait à leur palais.

¹⁰קול נגידים נחבאו ולשונם לחכם דבקה׃

¹¹For when the ear heard [me], then it blessed me; And when the eye saw [me], it gave witness unto me:

¹¹L'oreille qui m'entendait me disait heureux, L'oeil qui me voyait me rendait témoignage;

¹¹כי אזן שמעה ותאשרני ועין ראתה ותעידני׃

¹²Because I delivered the poor that cried, The fatherless also, that had none to help him.

¹²Car je sauvais le pauvre qui implorait du secours, Et l'orphelin qui manquait d'appui.

¹²כי אמלט עני משוע ויתום ולא עזר לו׃

¹³The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

¹³La bénédiction du malheureux venait sur moi; Je remplissais de joie le coeur de la veuve.

¹³ברכת אבד עלי תבא ולב אלמנה ארנן׃

¹⁴I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: My justice was as a robe and a diadem.

¹⁴Je me revêtais de la justice et je lui servais de vêtement, J'avais ma droiture pour manteau et pour turban.

¹⁴צדק לבשתי וילבשני כמעיל וצניף משפטי׃

¹⁵I was eyes to the blind, And feet was I to the lame.

¹⁵J'étais l'oeil de l'aveugle Et le pied du boiteux.

¹⁵עינים הייתי לעור ורגלים לפסח אני׃

¹⁶I was a father to the needy: And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.

¹⁶J'étais le père des misérables, J'examinais la cause de l'inconnu;

¹⁶אב אנכי לאביונים ורב לא ידעתי אחקרהו׃

¹⁷And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous, And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

¹⁷Je brisais la mâchoire de l'injuste, Et j'arrachais de ses dents la proie.

¹⁷ואשברה מתלעות עול ומשניו אשליך טרף׃

¹⁸Then I said, I shall die in my nest, And I shall multiply my days as the sand:

¹⁸Alors je disais: Je mourrai dans mon nid, Mes jours seront abondants comme le sable;

¹⁸ואמר עם קני אגוע וכחול ארבה ימים׃

¹⁹My root is spread out to the waters, And the dew lieth all night upon my branch;

¹⁹L'eau pénétrera dans mes racines, La rosée passera la nuit sur mes branches;

¹⁹שרשי פתוח אלי מים וטל ילין בקצירי׃

²⁰My glory is fresh in me, And my bow is renewed in my hand.

²⁰Ma gloire reverdira sans cesse, Et mon arc rajeunira dans ma main.

²⁰כבודי חדש עמדי וקשתי בידי תחליף׃

²¹Unto me men gave ear, and waited, And kept silence for my counsel.

²¹On m'écoutait et l'on restait dans l'attente, On gardait le silence devant mes conseils.

²¹לי שמעו ויחלו וידמו למו עצתי׃

²²After my words they spake not again; And my speech distilled upon them.

²²Après mes discours, nul ne répliquait, Et ma parole était pour tous une bienfaisante rosée;

²²אחרי דברי לא ישנו ועלימו תטף מלתי׃

²³And they waited for me as for the rain; And they opened their mouth wide [as] for the latter rain.

²³Ils comptaient sur moi comme sur la pluie, Ils ouvraient la bouche comme pour une pluie du printemps.

²³ויחלו כמטר לי ופיהם פערו למלקוש׃

²⁴I smiled on them, when they had no confidence; And the light of my countenance they cast not down.

²⁴Je leur souriais quand ils perdaient courage, Et l'on ne pouvait chasser la sérénité de mon front.

²⁴אשחק אלהם לא יאמינו ואור פני לא יפילון׃

²⁵I chose out their way, and sat [as] chief, And dwelt as a king in the army, As one that comforteth the mourners.

²⁵J'aimais à aller vers eux, et je m'asseyais à leur tête; J'étais comme un roi au milieu d'une troupe, Comme un consolateur auprès des affligés.

²⁵אבחר דרכם ואשב ראש ואשכון כמלך בגדוד כאשר אבלים ינחם׃
