¹But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, Whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.

¹Et maintenant!... je suis la risée de plus jeunes que moi, De ceux dont je dédaignais de mettre les pères Parmi les chiens de mon troupeau.

¹ועתה שחקו עלי צעירים ממני לימים אשר מאסתי אבותם לשית עם כלבי צאני׃

²Yea, the strength of their hands, whereto should it profit me? Men in whom ripe age is perished.

²Mais à quoi me servirait la force de leurs mains? Ils sont incapables d'atteindre la vieillesse.

²גם כח ידיהם למה לי עלימו אבד כלח׃

³They are gaunt with want and famine; They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of wasteness and desolation.

³Desséchés par la misère et la faim, Ils fuient dans les lieux arides, Depuis longtemps abandonnés et déserts;

³בחסר ובכפן גלמוד הערקים ציה אמש שואה ומשאה׃

⁴They pluck salt-wort by the bushes; And the roots of the broom are their food.

⁴Ils arrachent près des arbrisseaux les herbes sauvages, Et ils n'ont pour pain que la racine des genêts.

⁴הקטפים מלוח עלי שיח ושרש רתמים לחמם׃

⁵They are driven forth from the midst [of men]; They cry after them as after a thief;

⁵On les chasse du milieu des hommes, On crie après eux comme après des voleurs.

⁵מן גו יגרשו יריעו עלימו כגנב׃

⁶So that they dwell in frightful valleys, In holes of the earth and of the rocks.

⁶Ils habitent dans d'affreuses vallées, Dans les cavernes de la terre et dans les rochers;

⁶בערוץ נחלים לשכן חרי עפר וכפים׃

⁷Among the bushes they bray; Under the nettles they are gathered together.

⁷Ils hurlent parmi les buissons, Ils se rassemblent sous les ronces.

⁷בין שיחים ינהקו תחת חרול יספחו׃

⁸[They are] children of fools, yea, children of base men; They were scourged out of the land.

⁸Etres vils et méprisés, On les repousse du pays.

⁸בני נבל גם בני בלי שם נכאו מן הארץ׃

⁹And now I am become their song, Yea, I am a byword unto them.

⁹Et maintenant, je suis l'objet de leurs chansons, Je suis en butte à leurs propos.

⁹ועתה נגינתם הייתי ואהי להם למלה׃

¹⁰They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, And spare not to spit in my face.

¹⁰Ils ont horreur de moi, ils se détournent, Ils me crachent au visage.

¹⁰תעבוני רחקו מני ומפני לא חשכו רק׃

¹¹For he hath loosed his cord, and afflicted me; And they have cast off the bridle before me.

¹¹Ils n'ont plus de retenue et ils m'humilient, Ils rejettent tout frein devant moi.

¹¹כי יתרו פתח ויענני ורסן מפני שלחו׃

¹²Upon my right hand rise the rabble; They thrust aside my feet, And they cast up against me their ways of destruction.

¹²Ces misérables se lèvent à ma droite et me poussent les pieds, Ils se fraient contre moi des sentiers pour ma ruine;

¹²על ימין פרחח יקומו רגלי שלחו ויסלו עלי ארחות אידם׃

¹³They mar my path, They set forward my calamity, [Even] men that have no helper.

¹³Ils détruisent mon propre sentier et travaillent à ma perte, Eux à qui personne ne viendrait en aide;

¹³נתסו נתיבתי להותי יעילו לא עזר למו׃

¹⁴As through a wide breach they come: In the midst of the ruin they roll themselves [upon me].

¹⁴Ils arrivent comme par une large brèche, Ils se précipitent sous les craquements.

¹⁴כפרץ רחב יאתיו תחת שאה התגלגלו׃

¹⁵Terrors are turned upon me; They chase mine honor as the wind; And my welfare is passed away as a cloud.

¹⁵Les terreurs m'assiègent; Ma gloire est emportée comme par le vent, Mon bonheur a passé comme un nuage.

¹⁵ההפך עלי בלהות תרדף כרוח נדבתי וכעב עברה ישעתי׃

¹⁶And now my soul is poured out within me; Days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

¹⁶Et maintenant, mon âme s'épanche en mon sein, Les jours de la souffrance m'ont saisi.

¹⁶ועתה עלי תשתפך נפשי יאחזוני ימי עני׃

¹⁷In the night season my bones are pierced in me, And the [pains] that gnaw me take no rest.

¹⁷La nuit me perce et m'arrache les os, La douleur qui me ronge ne se donne aucun repos,

¹⁷לילה עצמי נקר מעלי וערקי לא ישכבון׃

¹⁸By [God's] great force is my garment disfigured; It bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.

¹⁸Par la violence du mal mon vêtement perd sa forme, Il se colle à mon corps comme ma tunique.

¹⁸ברב כח יתחפש לבושי כפי כתנתי יאזרני׃

¹⁹He hath cast me into the mire, And I am become like dust and ashes.

¹⁹Dieu m'a jeté dans la boue, Et je ressemble à la poussière et à la cendre.

¹⁹הרני לחמר ואתמשל כעפר ואפר׃

²⁰I cry unto thee, and thou dost not answer me: I stand up, and thou gazest at me.

²⁰Je crie vers toi, et tu ne me réponds pas; Je me tiens debout, et tu me lances ton regard.

²⁰אשוע אליך ולא תענני עמדתי ותתבנן בי׃

²¹Thou art turned to be cruel to me; With the might of thy hand thou persecutest me.

²¹Tu deviens cruel contre moi, Tu me combats avec la force de ta main.

²¹תהפך לאכזר לי בעצם ידך תשטמני׃

²²Thou liftest me up to the wind, thou causest me to ride [upon it]; And thou dissolvest me in the storm.

²²Tu me soulèves, tu me fais voler au-dessus du vent, Et tu m'anéantis au bruit de la tempête.

²²תשאני אל רוח תרכיבני ותמגגני תשוה׃

²³For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, And to the house appointed for all living.

²³Car, je le sais, tu me mènes à la mort, Au rendez-vous de tous les vivants.

²³כי ידעתי מות תשיבני ובית מועד לכל חי׃

²⁴Howbeit doth not one stretch out the hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help?

²⁴Mais celui qui va périr n'étend-il pas les mains? Celui qui est dans le malheur n'implore-t-il pas du secours?

²⁴אך לא בעי ישלח יד אם בפידו להן שוע׃

²⁵Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?

²⁵N'avais-je pas des larmes pour l'infortuné? Mon coeur n'avait-il pas pitié de l'indigent?

²⁵אם לא בכיתי לקשה יום עגמה נפשי לאביון׃

²⁶When I looked for good, then evil came; And when I waited for light, there came darkness.

²⁶J'attendais le bonheur, et le malheur est arrivé; J'espérais la lumière, et les ténèbres sont venues.

²⁶כי טוב קויתי ויבא רע ואיחלה לאור ויבא אפל׃

²⁷My heart is troubled, and resteth not; Days of affliction are come upon me.

²⁷Mes entrailles bouillonnent sans relâche, Les jours de la calamité m'ont surpris.

²⁷מעי רתחו ולא דמו קדמני ימי עני׃

²⁸I go mourning without the sun: I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.

²⁸Je marche noirci, mais non par le soleil; Je me lève en pleine assemblée, et je crie.

²⁸קדר הלכתי בלא חמה קמתי בקהל אשוע׃

²⁹I am a brother to jackals, And a companion to ostriches.

²⁹Je suis devenu le frère des chacals, Le compagnon des autruches.

²⁹אח הייתי לתנים ורע לבנות יענה׃

³⁰My skin is black, [and falleth] from me, And my bones are burned with heat.

³⁰Ma peau noircit et tombe, Mes os brûlent et se dessèchent.

³⁰עורי שחר מעלי ועצמי חרה מני חרב׃

³¹Therefore is my harp [turned] to mourning, And my pipe into the voice of them that weep.

³¹Ma harpe n'est plus qu'un instrument de deuil, Et mon chalumeau ne peut rendre que des sons plaintifs.

³¹ויהי לאבל כנרי ועגבי לקול בכים׃
