¹I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?

¹J'avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux, Et je n'aurais pas arrêté mes regards sur une vierge.

¹ברית כרתי לעיני ומה אתבונן על בתולה׃

²For what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

²Quelle part Dieu m'eût-il réservée d'en haut? Quel héritage le Tout-Puissant m'eût-il envoyé des cieux?

²ומה חלק אלוה ממעל ונחלת שדי ממרמים׃

³Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

³La ruine n'est-elle pas pour le méchant, Et le malheur pour ceux qui commettent l'iniquité?

³הלא איד לעול ונכר לפעלי און׃

⁴Doth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?

⁴Dieu n'a-t-il pas connu mes voies? N'a-t-il pas compté tous mes pas?

⁴הלא הוא יראה דרכי וכל צעדי יספור׃

⁵If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit

⁵Si j'ai marché dans le mensonge, Si mon pied a couru vers la fraude,

⁵אם הלכתי עם שוא ותחש על מרמה רגלי׃

⁶(Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity);

⁶Que Dieu me pèse dans des balances justes, Et il reconnaîtra mon intégrité!

⁶ישקלני במאזני צדק וידע אלוה תמתי׃

⁷If my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

⁷Si mon pas s'est détourné du droit chemin, Si mon coeur a suivi mes yeux, Si quelque souillure s'est attachée à mes mains,

⁷אם תטה אשרי מני הדרך ואחר עיני הלך לבי ובכפי דבק מאום׃

⁸Then let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

⁸Que je sème et qu'un autre moissonne, Et que mes rejetons soient déracinés!

⁸אזרעה ואחר יאכל וצאצאי ישרשו׃

⁹If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor's door;

⁹Si mon coeur a été séduit par une femme, Si j'ai fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain,

⁹אם נפתה לבי על אשה ועל פתח רעי ארבתי׃

¹⁰Then let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.

¹⁰Que ma femme tourne la meule pour un autre, Et que d'autres la déshonorent!

¹⁰תטחן לאחר אשתי ועליה יכרעון אחרין׃

¹¹For that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

¹¹Car c'est un crime, Un forfait que punissent les juges;

¹¹כי הוא זמה והיא עון פלילים׃

¹²For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.

¹²C'est un feu qui dévore jusqu'à la ruine, Et qui aurait détruit toute ma richesse.

¹²כי אש היא עד אבדון תאכל ובכל תבואתי תשרש׃

¹³If I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;

¹³Si j'ai méprisé le droit de mon serviteur ou de ma servante Lorsqu'ils étaient en contestation avec moi,

¹³אם אמאס משפט עבדי ואמתי ברבם עמדי׃

¹⁴What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

¹⁴Qu'ai-je à faire, quand Dieu se lève? Qu'ai-je à répondre, quand il châtie?

¹⁴ומה אעשה כי יקום אל וכי יפקד מה אשיבנו׃

¹⁵Did not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

¹⁵Celui qui m'a créé dans le ventre de ma mère ne l'a-t-il pas créé? Le même Dieu ne nous a-t-il pas formés dans le sein maternel?

¹⁵הלא בבטן עשני עשהו ויכננו ברחם אחד׃

¹⁶If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

¹⁶Si j'ai refusé aux pauvres ce qu'ils demandaient, Si j'ai fait languir les yeux de la veuve,

¹⁶אם אמנע מחפץ דלים ועיני אלמנה אכלה׃

¹⁷Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof

¹⁷Si j'ai mangé seul mon pain, Sans que l'orphelin en ait eu sa part,

¹⁷ואכל פתי לבדי ולא אכל יתום ממנה׃

¹⁸(Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother's womb);

¹⁸Moi qui l'ai dès ma jeunesse élevé comme un père, Moi qui dès ma naissance ai soutenu la veuve;

¹⁸כי מנעורי גדלני כאב ומבטן אמי אנחנה׃

¹⁹If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;

¹⁹Si j'ai vu le malheureux manquer de vêtements, L'indigent n'avoir point de couverture,

¹⁹אם אראה אובד מבלי לבוש ואין כסות לאביון׃

²⁰If his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

²⁰Sans que ses reins m'aient béni, Sans qu'il ait été réchauffé par la toison de mes agneaux;

²⁰אם לא ברכוני חלצו ומגז כבשי יתחמם׃

²¹If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

²¹Si j'ai levé la main contre l'orphelin, Parce que je me sentais un appui dans les juges;

²¹אם הניפותי על יתום ידי כי אראה בשער עזרתי׃

²²Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.

²²Que mon épaule se détache de sa jointure, Que mon bras tombe et qu'il se brise!

²²כתפי משכמה תפול ואזרעי מקנה תשבר׃

²³For calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

²³Car les châtiments de Dieu m'épouvantent, Et je ne puis rien devant sa majesté.

²³כי פחד אלי איד אל ומשאתו לא אוכל׃

²⁴If I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, [Thou art] my confidence;

²⁴Si j'ai mis dans l'or ma confiance, Si j'ai dit à l'or: Tu es mon espoir;

²⁴אם שמתי זהב כסלי ולכתם אמרתי מבטחי׃

²⁵If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

²⁵Si je me suis réjoui de la grandeur de mes biens, De la quantité des richesses que j'avais acquises;

²⁵אם אשמח כי רב חילי וכי כביר מצאה ידי׃

²⁶If I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,

²⁶Si j'ai regardé le soleil quand il brillait, La lune quand elle s'avançait majestueuse,

²⁶אם אראה אור כי יהל וירח יקר הלך׃

²⁷And my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

²⁷Et si mon coeur s'est laissé séduire en secret, Si ma main s'est portée sur ma bouche;

²⁷ויפת בסתר לבי ותשק ידי לפי׃

²⁸This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.

²⁸C'est encore un crime que doivent punir les juges, Et j'aurais renié le Dieu d'en haut!

²⁸גם הוא עון פלילי כי כחשתי לאל ממעל׃

²⁹If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him;

²⁹Si j'ai été joyeux du malheur de mon ennemi, Si j'ai sauté d'allégresse quand les revers l'ont atteint,

²⁹אם אשמח בפיד משנאי והתעררתי כי מצאו רע׃

³⁰(Yea, I have not suffered by mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);

³⁰Moi qui n'ai pas permis à ma langue de pécher, De demander sa mort avec imprécation;

³⁰ולא נתתי לחטא חכי לשאל באלה נפשו׃

³¹If the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

³¹Si les gens de ma tente ne disaient pas: Où est celui qui n'a pas été rassasié de sa viande?

³¹אם לא אמרו מתי אהלי מי יתן מבשרו לא נשבע׃

³²(The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

³²Si l'étranger passait la nuit dehors, Si je n'ouvrais pas ma porte au voyageur;

³²בחוץ לא ילין גר דלתי לארח אפתח׃

³³If like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

³³Si, comme les hommes, j'ai caché mes transgressions, Et renfermé mes iniquités dans mon sein,

³³אם כסיתי כאדם פשעי לטמון בחבי עוני׃

³⁴Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door-

³⁴Parce que j'avais peur de la multitude, Parce que je craignais le mépris des familles, Me tenant à l'écart et n'osant franchir ma porte...

³⁴כי אערוץ המון רבה ובוז משפחות יחתני ואדם לא אצא פתח׃

³⁵Oh that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); And [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

³⁵Oh! qui me fera trouver quelqu'un qui m'écoute? Voilà ma défense toute signée: Que le Tout-Puissant me réponde! Qui me donnera la plainte écrite par mon adversaire?

³⁵מי יתן לי שמע לי הן תוי שדי יענני וספר כתב איש ריבי׃

³⁶Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:

³⁶Je porterai son écrit sur mon épaule, Je l'attacherai sur mon front comme une couronne;

³⁶אם לא על שכמי אשאנו אענדנו עטרות לי׃

³⁷I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.

³⁷Je lui rendrai compte de tous mes pas, Je m'approcherai de lui comme un prince.

³⁷מספר צעדי אגידנו כמו נגיד אקרבנו׃

³⁸If my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;

³⁸Si ma terre crie contre moi, Et que ses sillons versent des larmes;

³⁸אם עלי אדמתי תזעק ויחד תלמיה יבכיון׃

³⁹If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

³⁹Si j'en ai mangé le produit sans l'avoir payée, Et que j'aie attristé l'âme de ses anciens maîtres;

³⁹אם כחה אכלתי בלי כסף ונפש בעליה הפחתי׃

⁴⁰Let thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

⁴⁰Qu'il y croisse des épines au lieu de froment, Et de l'ivraie au lieu d'orge! Fin des paroles de Job.
