¹Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, And hearken to all my words.

¹Maintenant donc, Job, écoute mes discours, Prête l'oreille à toutes mes paroles!

¹ואולם שמע נא איוב מלי וכל דברי האזינה׃

²Behold now, I have opened my mouth; My tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

²Voici, j'ouvre la bouche, Ma langue se remue dans mon palais.

²הנה נא פתחתי פי דברה לשוני בחכי׃

³My words [shall utter] the uprightness of my heart; And that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

³C'est avec droiture de coeur que je vais parler, C'est la vérité pure qu'exprimeront mes lèvres:

³ישר לבי אמרי ודעת שפתי ברור מללו׃

⁴The Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

⁴L'esprit de Dieu m'a créé, Et le souffle du Tout-Puissant m'anime.

⁴רוח אל עשתני ונשמת שדי תחיני׃

⁵If thou canst, answer thou me; Set [thy words] in order before me, stand forth.

⁵Si tu le peux, réponds-moi, Défends ta cause, tiens-toi prêt!

⁵אם תוכל השיבני ערכה לפני התיצבה׃

⁶Behold, I am toward God even as thou art: I also am formed out of the clay.

⁶Devant Dieu je suis ton semblable, J'ai été comme toi formé de la boue;

⁶הן אני כפיך לאל מחמר קרצתי גם אני׃

⁷Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

⁷Ainsi mes terreurs ne te troubleront pas, Et mon poids ne saurait t'accabler.

⁷הנה אמתי לא תבעתך ואכפי עליך לא יכבד׃

⁸Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, And I have heard the voice of [thy] words, [saying],

⁸Mais tu as dit à mes oreilles, Et j'ai entendu le son de tes paroles:

⁸אך אמרת באזני וקול מלין אשמע׃

⁹I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me:

⁹Je suis pur, je suis sans péché, Je suis net, il n'y a point en moi d'iniquité.

⁹זך אני בלי פשע חף אנכי ולא עון לי׃

¹⁰Behold, he findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for his enemy:

¹⁰Et Dieu trouve contre moi des motifs de haine, Il me traite comme son ennemi;

¹⁰הן תנואות עלי ימצא יחשבני לאויב לו׃

¹¹He putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.

¹¹Il met mes pieds dans les ceps, Il surveille tous mes mouvements.

¹¹ישם בסד רגלי ישמר כל ארחתי׃

¹²Behold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just; For God is greater than man.

¹²Je te répondrai qu'en cela tu n'as pas raison, Car Dieu est plus grand que l'homme.

¹²הן זאת לא צדקת אענך כי ירבה אלוה מאנוש׃

¹³Why dost thou strive against him, For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

¹³Veux-tu donc disputer avec lui, Parce qu'il ne rend aucun compte de ses actes?

¹³מדוע אליו ריבות כי כל דבריו לא יענה׃

¹⁴For God speaketh once, Yea twice, [though man] regardeth it not.

¹⁴Dieu parle cependant, tantôt d'une manière, Tantôt d'une autre, et l'on n'y prend point garde.

¹⁴כי באחת ידבר אל ובשתים לא ישורנה׃

¹⁵In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falleth upon men, In slumberings upon the bed;

¹⁵Il parle par des songes, par des visions nocturnes, Quand les hommes sont livrés à un profond sommeil, Quand ils sont endormis sur leur couche.

¹⁵בחלום חזיון לילה בנפל תרדמה על אנשים בתנומות עלי משכב׃

¹⁶Then he openeth the ears of men, And sealeth their instruction,

¹⁶Alors il leur donne des avertissements Et met le sceau à ses instructions,

¹⁶אז יגלה אזן אנשים ובמסרם יחתם׃

¹⁷That he may withdraw man [from his] purpose, And hide pride from man;

¹⁷Afin de détourner l'homme du mal Et de le préserver de l'orgueil,

¹⁷להסיר אדם מעשה וגוה מגבר יכסה׃

¹⁸He keepeth back his soul from the pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.

¹⁸Afin de garantir son âme de la fosse Et sa vie des coups du glaive.

¹⁸יחשך נפשו מני שחת וחיתו מעבר בשלח׃

¹⁹He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, And with continual strife in his bones;

¹⁹Par la douleur aussi l'homme est repris sur sa couche, Quand une lutte continue vient agiter ses os.

¹⁹והוכח במכאוב על משכבו וריב עצמיו אתן׃

²⁰So that his life abhorreth bread, And his soul dainty food.

²⁰Alors il prend en dégoût le pain, Même les aliments les plus exquis;

²⁰וזהמתו חיתו לחם ונפשו מאכל תאוה׃

²¹His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; And his bones that were not seen stick out.

²¹Sa chair se consume et disparaît, Ses os qu'on ne voyait pas sont mis à nu;

²¹יכל בשרו מראי ושפי עצמותיו לא ראו׃

²²Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, And his life to the destroyers.

²²Son âme s'approche de la fosse, Et sa vie des messagers de la mort.

²²ותקרב לשחת נפשו וחיתו לממתים׃

²³If there be with him an angel, An interpreter, one among a thousand, To show unto man what is right for him;

²³Mais s'il se trouve pour lui un ange intercesseur, Un d'entre les mille Qui annoncent à l'homme la voie qu'il doit suivre,

²³אם יש עליו מלאך מליץ אחד מני אלף להגיד לאדם ישרו׃

²⁴Then [God] is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.

²⁴Dieu a compassion de lui et dit à l'ange: Délivre-le, afin qu'il ne descende pas dans la fosse; J'ai trouvé une rançon!

²⁴ויחננו ויאמר פדעהו מרדת שחת מצאתי כפר׃

²⁵His flesh shall be fresher than a child's; He returneth to the days of his youth.

²⁵Et sa chair a plus de fraîcheur qu'au premier âge, Il revient aux jours de sa jeunesse.

²⁵רטפש בשרו מנער ישוב לימי עלומיו׃

²⁶He prayeth unto God, and he is favorable unto him, So that he seeth his face with joy: And he restoreth unto man his righteousness.

²⁶Il adresse à Dieu sa prière; et Dieu lui est propice, Lui laisse voir sa face avec joie, Et lui rend son innocence.

²⁶יעתר אל אלוה וירצהו וירא פניו בתרועה וישב לאנוש צדקתו׃

²⁷He singeth before men, and saith, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, And it profited me not:

²⁷Il chante devant les hommes et dit: J'ai péché, j'ai violé la justice, Et je n'ai pas été puni comme je le méritais;

²⁷ישר על אנשים ויאמר חטאתי וישר העויתי ולא שוה לי׃

²⁸He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit, And my life shall behold the light.

²⁸Dieu a délivré mon âme pour qu'elle n'entrât pas dans la fosse, Et ma vie s'épanouit à la lumière!

²⁸פדה נפשי מעבר בשחת וחיתי באור תראה׃

²⁹Lo, all these things doth God work, Twice, [yea] thrice, with a man,

²⁹Voilà tout ce que Dieu fait, Deux fois, trois fois, avec l'homme,

²⁹הן כל אלה יפעל אל פעמים שלוש עם גבר׃

³⁰To bring back his soul from the pit, That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

³⁰Pour ramener son âme de la fosse, Pour l'éclairer de la lumière des vivants.

³⁰להשיב נפשו מני שחת לאור באור החיים׃

³¹Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: Hold thy peace, and I will speak.

³¹Sois attentif, Job, écoute-moi! Tais-toi, et je parlerai!

³¹הקשב איוב שמע לי החרש ואנכי אדבר׃

³²If thou hast anything to say, answer me: Speak, for I desire to justify thee.

³²Si tu as quelque chose à dire, réponds-moi! Parle, car je voudrais te donner raison.

³²אם יש מלין השיבני דבר כי חפצתי צדקך׃

³³If not, hearken thou unto me: Hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.

³³Si tu n'as rien à dire, écoute-moi! Tais-toi, et je t'enseignerai la sagesse.

³³אם אין אתה שמע לי החרש ואאלפך חכמה׃
