¹Moreover Elihu answered and said,

¹Elihu reprit et dit:

¹ויען אליהוא ויאמר׃

²Hear my words, ye wise men; And give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

²Sages, écoutez mes discours! Vous qui êtes intelligents, prêtez-moi l'oreille!

²שמעו חכמים מלי וידעים האזינו לי׃

³For the ear trieth words, As the palate tasteth food.

³Car l'oreille discerne les paroles, Comme le palais savoure les aliments.

³כי אזן מלין תבחן וחך יטעם לאכל׃

⁴Let us choose for us that which is right: Let us know among ourselves what is good.

⁴Choisissons ce qui est juste, Voyons entre nous ce qui est bon.

⁴משפט נבחרה לנו נדעה בינינו מה טוב׃

⁵For Job hath said, I am righteous, And God hath taken away my right:

⁵Job dit: Je suis innocent, Et Dieu me refuse justice;

⁵כי אמר איוב צדקתי ואל הסיר משפטי׃

⁶Notwithstanding my right I am [accounted] a liar; My wound is incurable, [though I am] without transgression.

⁶J'ai raison, et je passe pour menteur; Ma plaie est douloureuse, et je suis sans péché.

⁶על משפטי אכזב אנוש חצי בלי פשע׃

⁷What man is like Job, Who drinketh up scoffing like water,

⁷Y a-t-il un homme semblable à Job, Buvant la raillerie comme l'eau,

⁷מי גבר כאיוב ישתה לעג כמים׃

⁸Who goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, And walketh with wicked men?

⁸Marchant en société de ceux qui font le mal, Cheminant de pair avec les impies?

⁸וארח לחברה עם פעלי און וללכת עם אנשי רשע׃

⁹For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing That he should delight himself with God.

⁹Car il a dit: Il est inutile à l'homme De mettre son plaisir en Dieu.

⁹כי אמר לא יסכן גבר ברצתו עם אלהים׃

¹⁰Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, And from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

¹⁰Ecoutez-moi donc, hommes de sens! Loin de Dieu l'injustice, Loin du Tout-Puissant l'iniquité!

¹⁰לכן אנשי לבב שמעו לי חללה לאל מרשע ושדי מעול׃

¹¹For the work of a man will he render unto him, And cause every man to find according to his ways.

¹¹Il rend à l'homme selon ses oeuvres, Il rétribue chacun selon ses voies.

¹¹כי פעל אדם ישלם לו וכארח איש ימצאנו׃

¹²Yea, of a surety, God will not do wickedly, Neither will the Almighty pervert justice.

¹²Non certes, Dieu ne commet pas l'iniquité; Le Tout-Puissant ne viole pas la justice.

¹²אף אמנם אל לא ירשיע ושדי לא יעות משפט׃

¹³Who gave him a charge over the earth? Or who hath disposed the whole world?

¹³Qui l'a chargé de gouverner la terre? Qui a confié l'univers à ses soins?

¹³מי פקד עליו ארצה ומי שם תבל כלה׃

¹⁴If he set his heart upon himself, [If] he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;

¹⁴S'il ne pensait qu'à lui-même, S'il retirait à lui son esprit et son souffle,

¹⁴אם ישים אליו לבו רוחו ונשמתו אליו יאסף׃

¹⁵All flesh shall perish together, And man shall turn again unto dust.

¹⁵Toute chair périrait soudain, Et l'homme rentrerait dans la poussière.

¹⁵יגוע כל בשר יחד ואדם על עפר ישוב׃

¹⁶If now [thou hast] understanding, hear this: Hearken to the voice of my words.

¹⁶Si tu as de l'intelligence, écoute ceci, Prête l'oreille au son de mes paroles!

¹⁶ואם בינה שמעה זאת האזינה לקול מלי׃

¹⁷Shall even one that hateth justice govern? And wilt thou condemn him that is righteous [and] mighty?-

¹⁷Un ennemi de la justice régnerait-il? Et condamneras-tu le juste, le puissant,

¹⁷האף שונא משפט יחבוש ואם צדיק כביר תרשיע׃

¹⁸[Him] that saith to a king, [Thou art] vile, [Or] to nobles, [Ye are] wicked;

¹⁸Qui proclame la méchanceté des rois Et l'iniquité des princes,

¹⁸האמר למלך בליעל רשע אל נדיבים׃

¹⁹That respecteth not the persons of princes, Nor regardeth the rich more than the poor; For they all are the work of his hands.

¹⁹Qui n'a point égard à l'apparence des grands Et ne distingue pas le riche du pauvre, Parce que tous sont l'ouvrage de ses mains?

¹⁹אשר לא נשא פני שרים ולא נכר שוע לפני דל כי מעשה ידיו כלם׃

²⁰In a moment they die, even at midnight; The people are shaken and pass away, And the mighty are taken away without hand.

²⁰En un instant, ils perdent la vie; Au milieu de la nuit, un peuple chancelle et périt; Le puissant disparaît, sans la main d'aucun homme.

²⁰רגע ימתו וחצות לילה יגעשו עם ויעברו ויסירו אביר לא ביד׃

²¹For his eyes are upon the ways of a man, And he seeth all his goings.

²¹Car Dieu voit la conduite de tous, Il a les regards sur les pas de chacun.

²¹כי עיניו על דרכי איש וכל צעדיו יראה׃

²²There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

²²Il n'y a ni ténèbres ni ombre de la mort, Où puissent se cacher ceux qui commettent l'iniquité.

²²אין חשך ואין צלמות להסתר שם פעלי און׃

²³For he needeth not further to consider a man, That he should go before God in judgment.

²³Dieu n'a pas besoin d'observer longtemps, Pour qu'un homme entre en jugement avec lui;

²³כי לא על איש ישים עוד להלך אל אל במשפט׃

²⁴He breaketh in pieces mighty men [in ways] past finding out, And setteth others in their stead.

²⁴Il brise les grands sans information, Et il met d'autres à leur place;

²⁴ירע כבירים לא חקר ויעמד אחרים תחתם׃

²⁵Therefore he taketh knowledge of their works; And he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

²⁵Car il connaît leurs oeuvres. Il les renverse de nuit, et ils sont écrasés;

²⁵לכן יכיר מעבדיהם והפך לילה וידכאו׃

²⁶He striketh them as wicked men In the open sight of others;

²⁶Il les frappe comme des impies, A la face de tous les regards.

²⁶תחת רשעים ספקם במקום ראים׃

²⁷Because they turned aside from following him, And would not have regard in any of his ways:

²⁷En se détournant de lui, En abandonnant toutes ses voies,

²⁷אשר על כן סרו מאחריו וכל דרכיו לא השכילו׃

²⁸So that they caused the cry of the poor to come unto him, And he heard the cry of the afflicted.

²⁸Ils ont fait monter à Dieu le cri du pauvre, Ils l'ont rendu attentif aux cris des malheureux.

²⁸להביא עליו צעקת דל וצעקת עניים ישמע׃

²⁹When he giveth quietness, who then can condemn? And when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? Alike whether [it be done] unto a nation, or unto a man:

²⁹S'il donne le repos, qui répandra le trouble? S'il cache sa face, qui pourra le voir? Il traite à l'égal soit une nation, soit un homme,

²⁹והוא ישקט ומי ירשע ויסתר פנים ומי ישורנו ועל גוי ועל אדם יחד׃

³⁰That the godless man reign not, That there be none to ensnare the people.

³⁰Afin que l'impie ne domine plus, Et qu'il ne soit plus un piège pour le peuple.

³⁰ממלך אדם חנף ממקשי עם׃

³¹For hath any said unto God, I have borne [chastisement], I will not offend [any more]:

³¹Car a-t-il jamais dit à Dieu: J'ai été châtié, je ne pécherai plus;

³¹כי אל אל האמר נשאתי לא אחבל׃

³²That which I see not teach thou me: If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more?

³²Montre-moi ce que je ne vois pas; Si j'ai commis des injustices, je n'en commettrai plus?

³²בלעדי אחזה אתה הרני אם עול פעלתי לא אסיף׃

³³Shall his recompense be as thou wilt, that thou refusest it? For thou must choose, and not I: Therefore speak what thou knowest.

³³Est-ce d'après toi que Dieu rendra la justice? C'est toi qui rejettes, qui choisis, mais non pas moi; Ce que tu sais, dis-le donc!

³³המעמך ישלמנה כי מאסת כי אתה תבחר ולא אני ומה ידעת דבר׃

³⁴Men of understanding will say unto me, Yea, every wise man that heareth me:

³⁴Les hommes de sens seront de mon avis, Le sage qui m'écoute pensera comme moi.

³⁴אנשי לבב יאמרו לי וגבר חכם שמע לי׃

³⁵Job speaketh without knowledge, And his words are without wisdom.

³⁵Job parle sans intelligence, Et ses discours manquent de raison.

³⁵איוב לא בדעת ידבר ודבריו לא בהשכיל׃

³⁶Would that Job were tried unto the end, Because of his answering like wicked men.

³⁶Qu'il continue donc à être éprouvé, Puisqu'il répond comme font les méchants!

³⁶אבי יבחן איוב עד נצח על תשבת באנשי און׃

³⁷For he addeth rebellion unto his sin; He clappeth his hands among us, And multiplieth his words against God.

³⁷Car il ajoute à ses fautes de nouveaux péchés; Il bat des mains au milieu de nous, Il multiplie ses paroles contre Dieu.

³⁷כי יסיף על חטאתו פשע בינינו יספוק וירב אמריו לאל׃
