¹Moreover Elihu answered and said,

¹Elihu reprit et dit:

¹ויען אליהו ויאמר׃

²Thinkest thou this to be [thy] right, [Or] sayest thou, My righteousness is more than God's,

²Imagines-tu avoir raison, Penses-tu te justifier devant Dieu,

²הזאת חשבת למשפט אמרת צדקי מאל׃

³That thou sayest, What advantage will it be unto thee? [And], What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?

³Quand tu dis: Que me sert-il, Que me revient-il de ne pas pécher?

³כי תאמר מה יסכן לך מה אעיל מחטאתי׃

⁴I will answer thee, And thy companions with thee.

⁴C'est à toi que je vais répondre, Et à tes amis en même temps.

⁴אני אשיבך מלין ואת רעיך עמך׃

⁵Look unto the heavens, and see; And behold the skies, which are higher than thou.

⁵Considère les cieux, et regarde! Vois les nuées, comme elles sont au-dessus de toi!

⁵הבט שמים וראה ושור שחקים גבהו ממך׃

⁶If thou hast sinned, what effectest thou against him? And if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?

⁶Si tu pèches, quel tort lui causes-tu? Et quand tes péchés se multiplient, que lui fais-tu?

⁶אם חטאת מה תפעל בו ורבו פשעיך מה תעשה לו׃

⁷If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? Or what receiveth he of thy hand?

⁷Si tu es juste, que lui donnes-tu? Que reçoit-il de ta main?

⁷אם צדקת מה תתן לו או מה מידך יקח׃

⁸Thy wickedness [may hurt] a man as thou art; And thy righteousness [may profit] a son of man.

⁸Ta méchanceté ne peut nuire qu'à ton semblable, Ta justice n'est utile qu'au fils de l'homme.

⁸לאיש כמוך רשעך ולבן אדם צדקתך׃

⁹By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out; They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.

⁹On crie contre la multitude des oppresseurs, On se plaint de la violence d'un grand nombre;

⁹מרב עשוקים יזעיקו ישועו מזרוע רבים׃

¹⁰But none saith, Where is God my Maker, Who giveth songs in the night,

¹⁰Mais nul ne dit: Où est Dieu, mon créateur, Qui inspire des chants d'allégresse pendant la nuit,

¹⁰ולא אמר איה אלוה עשי נתן זמרות בלילה׃

¹¹Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, And maketh us wiser than the birds of the heavens?

¹¹Qui nous instruit plus que les bêtes de la terre, Et nous donne l'intelligence plus qu'aux oiseaux du ciel?

¹¹מלפנו מבהמות ארץ ומעוף השמים יחכמנו׃

¹²There they cry, but none giveth answer, Because of the pride of evil men.

¹²On a beau crier alors, Dieu ne répond pas, A cause de l'orgueil des méchants.

¹²שם יצעקו ולא יענה מפני גאון רעים׃

¹³Surely God will not hear an empty [cry], Neither will the Almighty regard it.

¹³C'est en vain que l'on crie, Dieu n'écoute pas, Le Tout-Puissant n'y a point égard.

¹³אך שוא לא ישמע אל ושדי לא ישורנה׃

¹⁴How much less when thou sayest thou beholdest him not, The cause is before him, and thou waitest for him!

¹⁴Bien que tu dises que tu ne le vois pas, Ta cause est devant lui: attends-le!

¹⁴אף כי תאמר לא תשורנו דין לפניו ותחולל לו׃

¹⁵But now, because he hath not visited in his anger, Neither doth he greatly regard arrogance;

¹⁵Mais, parce que sa colère ne sévit point encore, Ce n'est pas à dire qu'il ait peu souci du crime.

¹⁵ועתה כי אין פקד אפו ולא ידע בפש מאד׃

¹⁶Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vanity; He multiplieth words without knowledge.

¹⁶Ainsi Job ouvre vainement la bouche, Il multiplie les paroles sans intelligence.

¹⁶ואיוב הבל יפצה פיהו בבלי דעת מלין יכבר׃
