¹Elihu also proceeded, and said,

¹Elihu continua et dit:

¹ויסף אליהוא ויאמר׃

²Suffer me a little, and I will show thee; For I have yet somewhat to say on God's behalf.

²Attends un peu, et je vais poursuivre, Car j'ai des paroles encore pour la cause de Dieu.

²כתר לי זעיר ואחוך כי עוד לאלוה מלים׃

³I will fetch my knowledge from afar, And will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.

³Je prendrai mes raisons de haut, Et je prouverai la justice de mon créateur.

³אשא דעי למרחוק ולפעלי אתן צדק׃

⁴For truly my words are not false: One that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.

⁴Sois-en sûr, mes discours ne sont pas des mensonges, Mes sentiments devant toi sont sincères.

⁴כי אמנם לא שקר מלי תמים דעות עמך׃

⁵Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: He is mighty in strength of understanding.

⁵Dieu est puissant, mais il ne rejette personne; Il est puissant par la force de son intelligence.

⁵הן אל כביר ולא ימאס כביר כח לב׃

⁶He preserveth not the life of the wicked, But giveth to the afflicted [their] right.

⁶Il ne laisse pas vivre le méchant, Et il fait droit aux malheureux.

⁶לא יחיה רשע ומשפט עניים יתן׃

⁷He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: But with kings upon the throne He setteth them for ever, and they are exalted.

⁷Il ne détourne pas les yeux de dessus les justes, Il les place sur le trône avec les rois, Il les y fait asseoir pour toujours, afin qu'ils soient élevés.

⁷לא יגרע מצדיק עיניו ואת מלכים לכסא וישיבם לנצח ויגבהו׃

⁸And if they be bound in fetters, And be taken in the cords of afflictions;

⁸Viennent-ils à tomber dans les chaînes, Sont-ils pris dans les liens de l'adversité,

⁸ואם אסורים בזקים ילכדון בחבלי עני׃

⁹Then he showeth them their work, And their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly.

⁹Il leur dénonce leurs oeuvres, Leurs transgressions, leur orgueil;

⁹ויגד להם פעלם ופשעיהם כי יתגברו׃

¹⁰He openeth also their ear to instruction, And commandeth that they return from iniquity.

¹⁰Il les avertit pour leur instruction, Il les exhorte à se détourner de l'iniquité.

¹⁰ויגל אזנם למוסר ויאמר כי ישבון מאון׃

¹¹If they hearken and serve [him], They shall spend their days in prosperity, And their years in pleasures.

¹¹S'ils écoutent et se soumettent, Ils achèvent leurs jours dans le bonheur, Leurs années dans la joie.

¹¹אם ישמעו ויעבדו יכלו ימיהם בטוב ושניהם בנעימים׃

¹²But if they hearken not, they shall perish by the sword, And they shall die without knowledge.

¹²S'ils n'écoutent pas, ils périssent par le glaive, Ils expirent dans leur aveuglement.

¹²ואם לא ישמעו בשלח יעברו ויגועו בבלי דעת׃

¹³But they that are godless in heart lay up anger: They cry not for help when he bindeth them.

¹³Les impies se livrent à la colère, Ils ne crient pas à Dieu quand il les enchaîne;

¹³וחנפי לב ישימו אף לא ישועו כי אסרם׃

¹⁴They die in youth, And their life [perisheth] among the unclean.

¹⁴Ils perdent la vie dans leur jeunesse, Ils meurent comme les débauchés.

¹⁴תמת בנער נפשם וחיתם בקדשים׃

¹⁵He delivereth the afflicted by their affliction, And openeth their ear in oppression.

¹⁵Mais Dieu sauve le malheureux dans sa misère, Et c'est par la souffrance qu'il l'avertit.

¹⁵יחלץ עני בעניו ויגל בלחץ אזנם׃

¹⁶Yea, he would have allured thee out of distress Into a broad place, where there is no straitness; And that which is set on thy table would be full of fatness.

¹⁶Il te retirera aussi de la détresse, Pour te mettre au large, en pleine liberté, Et ta table sera chargée de mets succulents.

¹⁶ואף הסיתך מפי צר רחב לא מוצק תחתיה ונחת שלחנך מלא דשן׃

¹⁷But thou art full of the judgment of the wicked: Judgment and justice take hold [on thee].

¹⁷Mais si tu défends ta cause comme un impie, Le châtiment est inséparable de ta cause.

¹⁷ודין רשע מלאת דין ומשפט יתמכו׃

¹⁸For let not wrath stir thee up against chastisements; Neither let the greatness of the ransom turn thee aside.

¹⁸Que l'irritation ne t'entraîne pas à la moquerie, Et que la grandeur de la rançon ne te fasse pas dévier!

¹⁸כי חמה פן יסיתך בספק ורב כפר אל יטך׃

¹⁹Will thy cry avail, [that thou be] not in distress, Or all the forces of [thy] strength?

¹⁹Tes cris suffiraient-ils pour te sortir d'angoisse, Et même toutes les forces que tu pourrais déployer?

¹⁹היערך שועך לא בצר וכל מאמצי כח׃

²⁰Desire not the night, When peoples are cut off in their place.

²⁰Ne soupire pas après la nuit, Qui enlève les peuples de leur place.

²⁰אל תשאף הלילה לעלות עמים תחתם׃

²¹Take heed, regard not iniquity: For this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.

²¹Garde-toi de te livrer au mal, Car la souffrance t'y dispose.

²¹השמר אל תפן אל און כי על זה בחרת מעני׃

²²Behold, God doeth loftily in his power: Who is a teacher like unto him?

²²Dieu est grand par sa puissance; Qui saurait enseigner comme lui?

²²הן אל ישגיב בכחו מי כמהו מורה׃

²³Who hath enjoined him his way? Or who can say, Thou hast wrought unrighteousness?

²³Qui lui prescrit ses voies? Qui ose dire: Tu fais mal?

²³מי פקד עליו דרכו ומי אמר פעלת עולה׃

²⁴Remember that thou magnify his work, Whereof men have sung.

²⁴Souviens-toi d'exalter ses oeuvres, Que célèbrent tous les hommes.

²⁴זכר כי תשגיא פעלו אשר שררו אנשים׃

²⁵All men have looked thereon; Man beholdeth it afar off.

²⁵Tout homme les contemple, Chacun les voit de loin.

²⁵כל אדם חזו בו אנוש יביט מרחוק׃

²⁶Behold, God is great, and we know him not; The number of his years is unsearchable.

²⁶Dieu est grand, mais sa grandeur nous échappe, Le nombre de ses années est impénétrable.

²⁶הן אל שגיא ולא נדע מספר שניו ולא חקר׃

²⁷For he draweth up the drops of water, Which distil in rain from his vapor,

²⁷Il attire à lui les gouttes d'eau, Il les réduit en vapeur et forme la pluie;

²⁷כי יגרע נטפי מים יזקו מטר לאדו׃

²⁸Which the skies pour down And drop upon man abundantly.

²⁸Les nuages la laissent couler, Ils la répandent sur la foule des hommes.

²⁸אשר יזלו שחקים ירעפו עלי אדם רב׃

²⁹Yea, can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, The thunderings of his pavilion?

²⁹Et qui comprendra le déchirement de la nuée, Le fracas de sa tente?

²⁹אף אם יבין מפרשי עב תשאות סכתו׃

³⁰Behold, he spreadeth his light around him; And he covereth the bottom of the sea.

³⁰Voici, il étend autour de lui sa lumière, Et il se cache jusque dans les profondeurs de la mer.

³⁰הן פרש עליו אורו ושרשי הים כסה׃

³¹For by these he judgeth the peoples; He giveth food in abundance.

³¹Par ces moyens il juge les peuples, Et il donne la nourriture avec abondance.

³¹כי בם ידין עמים יתן אכל למכביר׃

³²He covereth his hands with the lightning, And giveth it a charge that it strike the mark.

³²Il prend la lumière dans sa main, Il la dirige sur ses adversaires.

³²על כפים כסה אור ויצו עליה במפגיע׃

³³The noise thereof telleth concerning him, The cattle also concerning [the storm] that cometh up.

³³Il s'annonce par un grondement; Les troupeaux pressentent son approche.

³³יגיד עליו רעו מקנה אף על עולה׃
