¹Then Job answered and said,

¹Job prit la parole et dit:

¹ויען איוב ויאמר׃

²Of a truth I know that it is so: But how can man be just with God?

²Je sais bien qu'il en est ainsi; Comment l'homme serait-il juste devant Dieu?

²אמנם ידעתי כי כן ומה יצדק אנוש עם אל׃

³If he be pleased to contend with him, He cannot answer him one of a thousand.

³S'il voulait contester avec lui, Sur mille choses il ne pourrait répondre à une seule.

³אם יחפץ לריב עמו לא יעננו אחת מני אלף׃

⁴[He is] wise in heart, and mighty in strength: Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?-

⁴A lui la sagesse et la toute-puissance: Qui lui résisterait impunément?

⁴חכם לבב ואמיץ כח מי הקשה אליו וישלם׃

⁵[Him] that removeth the mountains, and they know it not, When he overturneth them in his anger;

⁵Il transporte soudain les montagnes, Il les renverse dans sa colère.

⁵המעתיק הרים ולא ידעו אשר הפכם באפו׃

⁶That shaketh the earth out of its place, And the pillars thereof tremble;

⁶Il secoue la terre sur sa base, Et ses colonnes sont ébranlées.

⁶המרגיז ארץ ממקומה ועמודיה יתפלצון׃

⁷That commandeth the sun, and it riseth not, And sealeth up the stars;

⁷Il commande au soleil, et le soleil ne paraît pas; Il met un sceau sur les étoiles.

⁷האמר לחרס ולא יזרח ובעד כוכבים יחתם׃

⁸That alone stretcheth out the heavens, And treadeth upon the waves of the sea;

⁸Seul, il étend les cieux, Il marche sur les hauteurs de la mer.

⁸נטה שמים לבדו ודורך על במתי ים׃

⁹That maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the chambers of the south;

⁹Il a créé la Grande Ourse, l'Orion et les Pléiades, Et les étoiles des régions australes.

⁹עשה עש כסיל וכימה וחדרי תמן׃

¹⁰That doeth great things past finding out, Yea, marvellous things without number.

¹⁰Il fait des choses grandes et insondables, Des merveilles sans nombre.

¹⁰עשה גדלות עד אין חקר ונפלאות עד אין מספר׃

¹¹Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

¹¹Voici, il passe près de moi, et je ne le vois pas, Il s'en va, et je ne l'aperçois pas.

¹¹הן יעבר עלי ולא אראה ויחלף ולא אבין לו׃

¹²Behold, he seizeth [the prey], who can hinder him? Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

¹²S'il enlève, qui s'y opposera? Qui lui dira: Que fais-tu?

¹²הן יחתף מי ישיבנו מי יאמר אליו מה תעשה׃

¹³God will not withdraw his anger; The helpers of Rahab do stoop under him.

¹³Dieu ne retire point sa colère; Sous lui s'inclinent les appuis de l'orgueil.

¹³אלוה לא ישיב אפו תחתו שחחו עזרי רהב׃

¹⁴How much less shall I answer him, And choose out my words [to reason] with him?

¹⁴Et moi, comment lui répondre? Quelles paroles choisir?

¹⁴אף כי אנכי אעננו אבחרה דברי עמו׃

¹⁵Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer; I would make supplication to my judge.

¹⁵Quand je serais juste, je ne répondrais pas; Je ne puis qu'implorer mon juge.

¹⁵אשר אם צדקתי לא אענה למשפטי אתחנן׃

¹⁶If I had called, and he had answered me, Yet would I not believe that he hearkened unto my voice.

¹⁶Et quand il m'exaucerait, si je l'invoque, Je ne croirais pas qu'il eût écouté ma voix,

¹⁶אם קראתי ויענני לא אאמין כי יאזין קולי׃

¹⁷For he breaketh me with a tempest, And multiplieth my wounds without cause.

¹⁷Lui qui m'assaille comme par une tempête, Qui multiplie sans raison mes blessures,

¹⁷אשר בשערה ישופני והרבה פצעי חנם׃

¹⁸He will not suffer me to take my breath, But filleth me with bitterness.

¹⁸Qui ne me laisse pas respirer, Qui me rassasie d'amertume.

¹⁸לא יתנני השב רוחי כי ישבעני ממררים׃

¹⁹If [we speak] of strength, lo, [he is] mighty! And if of justice, Who, [saith he], will summon me?

¹⁹Recourir à la force? Il est tout-puissant. A la justice? Qui me fera comparaître?

¹⁹אם לכח אמיץ הנה ואם למשפט מי יועידני׃

²⁰Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me: Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse.

²⁰Suis-je juste, ma bouche me condamnera; Suis-je innocent, il me déclarera coupable.

²⁰אם אצדק פי ירשיעני תם אני ויעקשני׃

²¹I am perfect; I regard not myself; I despise my life.

²¹Innocent! Je le suis; mais je ne tiens pas à la vie, Je méprise mon existence.

²¹תם אני לא אדע נפשי אמאס חיי׃

²²It is all one; therefore I say, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

²²Qu'importe après tout? Car, j'ose le dire, Il détruit l'innocent comme le coupable.

²²אחת היא על כן אמרתי תם ורשע הוא מכלה׃

²³If the scourge slay suddenly, He will mock at the trial of the innocent.

²³Si du moins le fléau donnait soudain la mort!... Mais il se rit des épreuves de l'innocent.

²³אם שוט ימית פתאם למסת נקים ילעג׃

²⁴The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He covereth the faces of the judges thereof: If [it be] not [he], who then is it?

²⁴La terre est livrée aux mains de l'impie; Il voile la face des juges. Si ce n'est pas lui, qui est-ce donc?

²⁴ארץ נתנה ביד רשע פני שפטיה יכסה אם לא אפוא מי הוא׃

²⁵Now my days are swifter than a post: They flee away, they see no good,

²⁵Mes jours sont plus rapides qu'un courrier; Ils fuient sans avoir vu le bonheur;

²⁵וימי קלו מני רץ ברחו לא ראו טובה׃

²⁶They are passed away as the swift ships; As the eagle that swoopeth on the prey.

²⁶Ils passent comme les navires de jonc, Comme l'aigle qui fond sur sa proie.

²⁶חלפו עם אניות אבה כנשר יטוש עלי אכל׃

²⁷If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will put off my [sad] countenance, and be of good cheer;

²⁷Si je dis: Je veux oublier mes souffrances, Laisser ma tristesse, reprendre courage,

²⁷אם אמרי אשכחה שיחי אעזבה פני ואבליגה׃

²⁸I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

²⁸Je suis effrayé de toutes mes douleurs. Je sais que tu ne me tiendras pas pour innocent.

²⁸יגרתי כל עצבתי ידעתי כי לא תנקני׃

²⁹I shall be condemned; Why then do I labor in vain?

²⁹Je serai jugé coupable; Pourquoi me fatiguer en vain?

²⁹אנכי ארשע למה זה הבל איגע׃

³⁰If I wash myself with snow water, And make my hands never so clean;

³⁰Quand je me laverais dans la neige, Quand je purifierais mes mains avec du savon,

³⁰אם התרחצתי במו שלג והזכותי בבר כפי׃

³¹Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch, And mine own clothes shall abhor me.

³¹Tu me plongerais dans la fange, Et mes vêtements m'auraient en horreur.

³¹אז בשחת תטבלני ותעבוני שלמותי׃

³²For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, That we should come together in judgment.

³²Il n'est pas un homme comme moi, pour que je lui réponde, Pour que nous allions ensemble en justice.

³²כי לא איש כמני אעננו נבוא יחדו במשפט׃

³³There is no umpire betwixt us, That might lay his hand upon us both.

³³Il n'y a pas entre nous d'arbitre, Qui pose sa main sur nous deux.

³³לא יש בינינו מוכיח ישת ידו על שנינו׃

³⁴Let him take his rod away from me, And let not his terror make me afraid:

³⁴Qu'il retire sa verge de dessus moi, Que ses terreurs ne me troublent plus;

³⁴יסר מעלי שבטו ואמתו אל תבעתני׃

³⁵Then would I speak, and not fear him; For I am not so in myself.

³⁵Alors je parlerai et je ne le craindrai pas. Autrement, je ne suis point à moi-même.

³⁵אדברה ולא איראנו כי לא כן אנכי עמדי׃
