¹When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.

¹Lorsqu'il eut dit ces choses, Jésus alla avec ses disciples de l'autre côté du torrent du Cédron, où se trouvait un jardin, dans lequel il entra, lui et ses disciples.

¹ויהי ככלות ישוע לדבר את הדברים האלה ויצא החוצה עם תלמידיו מעבר לנחל קדרון ושם גן ויבא בו הוא ותלמידיו׃

²Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples.

²Judas, qui le livrait, connaissait ce lieu, parce que Jésus et ses disciples s'y étaient souvent réunis.

²וגם יהודה מוסרו ידע את המקום כי פעמים רבות נועד שמה ישוע עם תלמידיו׃

³Judas then, having received the band [of soldiers], and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

³Judas donc, ayant pris la cohorte, et des huissiers qu'envoyèrent les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens, vint là avec des lanternes, des flambeaux et des armes.

³ויקח יהודה את הגדוד ומשרתים מאת הכהנים הגדולים והפרושים ויבא שמה בנרות ובלפידים ובכלי נשק׃

⁴Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye?

⁴Jésus, sachant tout ce qui devait lui arriver, s'avança, et leur dit: Qui cherchez-vous?

⁴וישוע ידע את כל אשר יבא עליו ויצא ויאמר אליהם את מי תבקשו׃

⁵They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

⁵Ils lui répondirent: Jésus de Nazareth. Jésus leur dit: C'est moi. Et Judas, qui le livrait, était avec eux.

⁵ויענו ויאמרו את ישוע הנצרי ויאמר אליהם ישוע אני הוא וגם יהודה מוסרו עמד אצלם׃

⁶When therefore he said unto them, I am [he], they went backward, and fell to the ground.

⁶Lorsque Jésus leur eut dit: C'est moi, ils reculèrent et tombèrent par terre.

⁶ויהי בדבר ישוע אליהם אני הוא ויסגו אחור ויפלו ארצה׃

⁷Again therefore he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

⁷Il leur demanda de nouveau: Qui cherchez-vous? Et ils dirent: Jésus de Nazareth.

⁷ויסף וישאל אתם את מי תבקשו ויאמרו את ישוע הנצרי׃

⁸Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]; if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

⁸Jésus répondit: Je vous ai dit que c'est moi. Si donc c'est moi que vous cherchez, laissez aller ceux-ci.

⁸ויען ישוע הלא אמרתי לכם אני הוא לכן אם אתי תבקשו הניחו לאלה וילכו׃

⁹that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.

⁹Il dit cela, afin que s'accomplît la parole qu'il avait dite: Je n'ai perdu aucun de ceux que tu m'as donnés.

⁹למלאת הדבר אשר אמר מאלה אשר נתת לי לא אבד לי אף אחד׃

¹⁰Simon Peter therefore having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant's name was Malchus.

¹⁰Simon Pierre, qui avait une épée, la tira, frappa le serviteur du souverain sacrificateur, et lui coupa l'oreille droite. Ce serviteur s'appelait Malchus.

¹⁰ולשמעון פטרוס חרב וישלפה ויך את עבד הכהן הגדול ויקצץ את אזנו הימנית ושם העבד מלכוס׃

¹¹Jesus therefore said unto Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

¹¹Jésus dit à Pierre: Remets ton épée dans le fourreau. Ne boirai-je pas la coupe que le Père m'a donnée à boire?

¹¹ויאמר ישוע אל פטרוס השב חרבך אל נדנה הכי לא אשתה את הכוס אשר נתן לי אבי׃

¹²So the band and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,

¹²La cohorte, le tribun, et les huissiers des Juifs, se saisirent alors de Jésus, et le lièrent.

¹²אז תפשו הגדוד ושר האלף ומשרתי היהודים את ישוע ויאסרהו׃

¹³and led him to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

¹³Ils l'emmenèrent d'abord chez Anne; car il était le beau-père de Caïphe, qui était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là.

¹³ויוליכהו בראשונה אל חנן והוא חתן קיפא אשר שמש בכהנה גדולה בשנה ההיא׃

¹⁴Now Caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

¹⁴Et Caïphe était celui qui avait donné ce conseil aux Juifs: Il est avantageux qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple.

¹⁴הוא קיפא אשר יעץ את היהודים כי טוב אשר איש אחד יאבד בעד כל העם׃

¹⁵And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and [so did] another disciple. Now that disciple was known unto the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;

¹⁵Simon Pierre, avec un autre disciple, suivait Jésus. Ce disciple était connu du souverain sacrificateur, et il entra avec Jésus dans la cour du souverain sacrificateur;

¹⁵ושמעון פטרוס ותלמיד אחר הלכו אחרי ישוע והתלמיד ההוא היה נודע לכהן הגדול ויבא עם ישוע לחצר הכהן הגדול׃

¹⁶but Peter was standing at the door without. So the other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

¹⁶mais Pierre resta dehors près de la porte. L'autre disciple, qui était connu du souverain sacrificateur, sortit, parla à la portière, et fit entrer Pierre.

¹⁶ופטרוס עמד מחוץ לפתח ויצא התלמיד האחר המידע לכהן הגדול וידבר אל השערת ויבא את פטרוס פנימה׃

¹⁷The maid therefore that kept the door saith unto Peter, Art thou also [one] of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

¹⁷Alors la servante, la portière, dit à Pierre: Toi aussi, n'es-tu pas des disciples de cet homme? Il dit: Je n'en suis point.

¹⁷ותאמר האמה השערת אל פטרוס הלא גם אתה מתלמידי האיש הזה ויאמר אינני׃

¹⁸Now the servants and the officers were standing [there], having made a fire of coals; for it was cold; and they were warming themselves: and Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

¹⁸Les serviteurs et les huissiers, qui étaient là, avaient allumé un brasier, car il faisait froid, et ils se chauffaient. Pierre se tenait avec eux, et se chauffait.

¹⁸והעבדים והמשרתים בערו אש גחלים כי עת קר היתה ויעמדו שם ויתחממו וגם פטרוס עמד עמם ומתחמם׃

¹⁹The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching.

¹⁹Le souverain sacrificateur interrogea Jésus sur ses disciples et sur sa doctrine.

¹⁹וישאל הכהן הגדול את ישוע על תלמידיו ועל לקחו׃

²⁰Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.

²⁰Jésus lui répondit: J'ai parlé ouvertement au monde; j'ai toujours enseigné dans la synagogue et dans le temple, où tous les Juifs s'assemblent, et je n'ai rien dit en secret.

²⁰ויען אתו ישוע אנכי בגלוי דברתי אל העולם ותמיד למדתי בבית הכנסת ובבית המקדש אשר כל היהודים נקהלים שמה ולא דברתי דבר בסתר׃

²¹Why askest thou me? Ask them that have heard [me], what I spake unto them: behold, these know the things which I said.

²¹Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? Interroge sur ce que je leur ai dit ceux qui m'ont entendu; voici, ceux-là savent ce que j'ai dit.

²¹ומה תשאל אתי שאל נא את השמעים מה שדברתי אליהם הנם יודעים את אשר אמרתי׃

²²And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

²²A ces mots, un des huissiers, qui se trouvait là, donna un soufflet à Jésus, en disant: Est-ce ainsi que tu réponds au souverain sacrificateur?

²²ויהי כדברו הדברים האלה ויך אחד המשרתים העמד שמה את ישוע על הלחי ויאמר הכזאת תענה את הכהן הגדול׃

²³Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

²³Jésus lui dit: Si j'ai mal parlé, fais voir ce que j'ai dit de mal; et si j'ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu?

²³ויען אותו ישוע אם רעה דברתי תנה עד כי רעה היא ואם טוב מדוע תסטרני׃

²⁴Annas therefore sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

²⁴Anne l'envoya lié à Caïphe, le souverain sacrificateur.

²⁴וישלחהו חנן אסור בזקים אל קיפא הכהן הגדול׃

²⁵Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore unto him, Art thou also [one] of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.

²⁵Simon Pierre était là, et se chauffait. On lui dit: Toi aussi, n'es-tu pas de ses disciples? Il le nia, et dit: Je n'en suis point.

²⁵ושמעון פטרוס עמד ומתחמם ויאמרו אליו הלא גם אתה מתלמידיו ויכחש ויאמר אינני׃

²⁶One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

²⁶Un des serviteurs du souverain sacrificateur, parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, dit: Ne t'ai-je pas vu avec lui dans le jardin?

²⁶ויאמר איש מעבדי הכהן הגדול והוא מודע לאשר קצץ פטרוס את אזנו הלא ראיתיך עמו בתוך הגן׃

²⁷Peter therefore denied again: and straightway the cock crew.

²⁷Pierre le nia de nouveau. Et aussitôt le coq chanta.

²⁷ויסף פטרוס לכחש ופתאם קרא התרנגול׃

²⁸They lead Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium: and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.

²⁸Ils conduisirent Jésus de chez Caïphe au prétoire: c'était le matin. Ils n'entrèrent point eux-mêmes dans le prétoire, afin de ne pas se souiller, et de pouvoir manger la Pâque.

²⁸ויוליכו את ישוע מבית קיפא אל בית המשפט ויהי בבקר השכם והמה לא נכנסו אל בית המשפט למען אשר לא יטמאו כי אם יאכלו את הפסח׃

²⁹Pilate therefore went out unto them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man?

²⁹Pilate sortit donc pour aller à eux, et il dit: Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme?

²⁹ויצא פילטוס אליהם ויאמר על מה תאשימו את האיש הזה׃

³⁰They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.

³⁰Ils lui répondirent: Si ce n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré.

³⁰ויענו ויאמרו אליו לולא היה זה עשה רע כי עתה לא הסגרנהו אליך׃

³¹Pilate therefore said unto them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

³¹Sur quoi Pilate leur dit: Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et jugez-le selon votre loi. Les Juifs lui dirent: Il ne nous est pas permis de mettre personne à mort.

³¹ויאמר אליהם פילטוס קחהו אתם עמכם ועשו משפטו כתורתכם ויאמרו אליו היהודים אין לנו רשיון להמית איש׃

³²that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should die.

³²C'était afin que s'accomplît la parole que Jésus avait dite, lorsqu'il indiqua de quelle mort il devait mourir.

³²למלאת דבר ישוע אשר דבר לרמז אי זה מות עתיד הוא למות׃

³³Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

³³Pilate rentra dans le prétoire, appela Jésus, et lui dit: Es-tu le roi des Juifs?

³³וישב פילטוס אל בית המשפט ויקרא אל ישוע ויאמר אליו האתה הוא מלך היהודים׃

³⁴Jesus answered, Sayest thou this of thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?

³⁴Jésus répondit: Est-ce de toi-même que tu dis cela, ou d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi?

³⁴ויען אתו ישוע המלבך תדבר זאת או אחרים הגידו לך עלי׃

³⁵Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

³⁵Pilate répondit: Moi, suis-je Juif? Ta nation et les principaux sacrificateurs t'ont livré à moi: qu'as-tu fait?

³⁵ויען פילטוס האף אנכי יהודי הלא עמך וראשי הכהנים הסגירוך אלי מה עשית׃

³⁶Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

³⁶Mon royaume n'est pas de ce monde, répondit Jésus. Si mon royaume était de ce monde, mes serviteurs auraient combattu pour moi afin que je ne fusse pas livré aux Juifs; mais maintenant mon royaume n'est point d'ici-bas.

³⁶ויען ישוע מלכותי איננה מן העולם הזה אם היתה מלכותי מן העולם הזה כי אז נלחמו לי משרתי לבלתי המסר ביד היהודים ועתה מלכותי איננה מפה׃

³⁷Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

³⁷Pilate lui dit: Tu es donc roi? Jésus répondit: Tu le dis, je suis roi. Je suis né et je suis venu dans le monde pour rendre témoignage à la vérité. Quiconque est de la vérité écoute ma voix.

³⁷ויאמר אליו פילטוס אם כן אפוא מלך אתה ויען ישוע אתה אמרת כי מלך אנכי לזה נולדתי ולזה באתי בעולם להעיד לאמת כל אשר הוא מן האמת ישמע בקולי׃

³⁸Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him.

³⁸Pilate lui dit: Qu'est-ce que la vérité? Après avoir dit cela, il sortit de nouveau pour aller vers les Juifs, et il leur dit: Je ne trouve aucun crime en lui.

³⁸ויאמר אליו פילטוס מה היא האמת ואחרי דברו זאת יצא שנית אל היהודים ויאמר אליהם אני לא מצאתי בו כל עון׃

³⁹But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

³⁹Mais, comme c'est parmi vous une coutume que je vous relâche quelqu'un à la fête de Pâque, voulez-vous que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs?

³⁹הן מנהג הוא בכם כי אשלח לכם איש אחד חפשי בפסח היש את נפשכם כי אשלח לכם את מלך היהודים׃

⁴⁰They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.)

⁴⁰Alors de nouveau tous s'écrièrent: Non pas lui, mais Barabbas. Or, Barabbas était un brigand.

⁴⁰ויוסיפו ויצעקו לאמר לא את האיש הזה אלא את בר אבא ובר אבא היה מרצח׃
