¹Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

¹Alors Pilate prit Jésus, et le fit battre de verges.

²And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple garment;

²Les soldats tressèrent une couronne d'épines qu'ils posèrent sur sa tête, et ils le revêtirent d'un manteau de pourpre; puis, s'approchant de lui,

²וישרגו אנשי הצבא עטרת קצים וישימו אתו על ראשו ויעטהו לבוש ארגמן׃

³and they came unto him, and said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they struck him with their hands.

³ils disaient: Salut, roi des Juifs! Et ils lui donnaient des soufflets.

³ויאמרו שלום לך מלך היהודים ויכהו על הלחי׃

⁴And Pilate went out again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find no crime in him.

⁴Pilate sortit de nouveau, et dit aux Juifs: Voici, je vous l'amène dehors, afin que vous sachiez que je ne trouve en lui aucun crime.

⁴ויצא פילטוס עוד החוצה ויאמר אליהם הנני מוציא אתו אליכם למען תדעו כי לא מצאתי בו כל עון׃

⁵Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And [Pilate] saith unto them, Behold, the man!

⁵Jésus sortit donc, portant la couronne d'épines et le manteau de pourpre. Et Pilate leur dit: Voici l'homme.

⁵וישוע יצא החוץ ועליו עטרת הקצים ולבוש הארגמן ויאמר אליהם פילטוס הנה האדם׃

⁶When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify [him], crucify [him]! Pilate saith unto them, Take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no crime in him.

⁶Lorsque les principaux sacrificateurs et les huissiers le virent, ils s'écrièrent: Crucifie! crucifie! Pilate leur dit: Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et crucifiez-le; car moi, je ne trouve point de crime en lui.

⁶ויהי כאשר ראהו הכהנים הגדולים והמשרתים ויצעקו לאמר הצלב הצלב ויאמר אליהם פילטוס קחהו אתם והצליבהו כי אנכי לא מצאתי בו אשמה׃

⁷The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

⁷Les Juifs lui répondirent: Nous avons une loi; et, selon notre loi, il doit mourir, parce qu'il s'est fait Fils de Dieu.

⁷ויענו היהודים תורה יש לנו ועל פי תורתנו חיב מות הוא כי עשה עצמו לבן אלהים׃

⁸When Pilate therefore heard this saying, he was the more afraid;

⁸Quand Pilate entendit cette parole, sa frayeur augmenta.

⁸ויהי כשמע פילטוס את הדבר הזה ויאסף לרא עוד׃

⁹and he entered into the Praetorium again, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

⁹Il rentra dans le prétoire, et il dit à Jésus: D'où es-tu? Mais Jésus ne lui donna point de réponse.

⁹וישב ויבא אל בית המשפט ויאמר אל ישוע מאין אתה ולא השיבו ישוע דבר׃

¹⁰Pilate therefore saith unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power to release thee, and have power to crucify thee?

¹⁰Pilate lui dit: Est-ce à moi que tu ne parles pas? Ne sais-tu pas que j'ai le pouvoir de te crucifier, et que j'ai le pouvoir de te relâcher?

¹⁰ויאמר אליו פילטוס אלי לא תדבר הלא ידעת כי יש לאל ידי לצלבך ויש לאל ידי לשלחך׃

¹¹Jesus answered him, Thou wouldest have no power against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath greater sin.

¹¹Jésus répondit: Tu n'aurais sur moi aucun pouvoir, s'il ne t'avait été donné d'en haut. C'est pourquoi celui qui me livre à toi commet un plus grand péché.

¹¹ויען ישוע לא היתה לך רשות עלי לולא נתן לך מלמעלה לכן עון המסגיר אתי אליך גדול מעונך׃

¹²Upon this Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend: every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

¹²Dès ce moment, Pilate cherchait à le relâcher. Mais les Juifs criaient: Si tu le relâches, tu n'es pas ami de César. Quiconque se fait roi se déclare contre César.

¹²אז יבקש פילטוס לשלחו והיהודים צעקו ויאמרו אם תשלח את זה אינך אהב לקיסר כי כל המתנשא להיות מלך מרד הוא בקיסר׃

¹³When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

¹³Pilate, ayant entendu ces paroles, amena Jésus dehors; et il s'assit sur le tribunal, au lieu appelé le Pavé, et en hébreu Gabbatha.

¹³ויהי כשמע פילטוס את הדבר הזה הוציא את ישוע החוצה וישב על כסא המשפט במקום הנקרא בשם רצפה ובלשונם גבתא׃

¹⁴Now it was the Preparation of the passover: it was about the sixth hour. And he saith unto the Jews, Behold, your King!

¹⁴C'était la préparation de la Pâque, et environ la sixième heure. Pilate dit aux Juifs: Voici votre roi.

¹⁴ואז היתה הכנת הפסח והשעה כשעה הששית ויאמר אל היהודים הנה מלככם והם צעקו טול טול צלב אתו׃

¹⁵They therefore cried out, Away with [him], away with [him], crucify him! Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

¹⁵Mais ils s'écrièrent: Ote, ôte, crucifie-le! Pilate leur dit: Crucifierai-je votre roi? Les principaux sacrificateurs répondirent: Nous n'avons de roi que César.

¹⁵ויאמר אליהם פילטוס הצלב אצלב את מלככם ויענו ראשי הכהנים אין לנו מלך כי אם הקיסר׃

¹⁶Then therefore he delivered him unto them to be crucified.

¹⁶Alors il le leur livra pour être crucifié. Ils prirent donc Jésus, et l'emmenèrent.

¹⁶אז מסרו אליהם להצליבו ויקחו את ישוע ויוליכהו׃

¹⁷They took Jesus therefore: and he went out, bearing the cross for himself, unto the place called The place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha:

¹⁷Jésus, portant sa croix, arriva au lieu du crâne, qui se nomme en hébreu Golgotha.

¹⁷וישא את צלבו ויצא אל המקום הנקרא מקום הגלגלת ובלשונם גלגלתא׃

¹⁸where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

¹⁸C'est là qu'il fut crucifié, et deux autres avec lui, un de chaque côté, et Jésus au milieu.

¹⁸ויצלבו אתו שמה ושני אנשים אחרים עמו מזה אחד ומזה אחד וישוע בתוך׃

¹⁹And Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. And there was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

¹⁹Pilate fit une inscription, qu'il plaça sur la croix, et qui était ainsi conçue: Jésus de Nazareth, roi des Juifs.

¹⁹ופילטוס כתב על לוח וישם על הצלב וזה מכתבו ישוע הנצרי מלך היהודים׃

²⁰This title therefore read many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, [and] in Latin, [and] in Greek.

²⁰Beaucoup de Juifs lurent cette inscription, parce que le lieu où Jésus fut crucifié était près de la ville: elle était en hébreu, en grec et en latin.

²⁰ויהודים רבים קראו את המכתב הזה כי המקום אשר נצלב שם ישוע היה קרוב אל העיר והמכתב היה בלשון עבר יון ורומי׃

²¹The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

²¹Les principaux sacrificateurs des Juifs dirent à Pilate: N'écris pas: Roi des Juifs. Mais écris qu'il a dit: Je suis roi des Juifs.

²¹ויאמרו ראשי כהני היהודים אל פילטוס אל נא תכתב מלך היהודים כי אם אשר אמר אני מלך היהודים׃

²²Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

²²Pilate répondit: Ce que j'ai écrit, je l'ai écrit.

²²ויען פילטוס ויאמר את אשר כתבתי כתבתי׃

²³The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

²³Les soldats, après avoir crucifié Jésus, prirent ses vêtements, et ils en firent quatre parts, une part pour chaque soldat. Ils prirent aussi sa tunique, qui était sans couture, d'un seul tissu depuis le haut jusqu'en bas.

²³ויהי כאשר צלבו אנשי הצבא את ישוע ויקחו את בגדיו ויחלקום לארבעה חלקים לאיש איש חלק אחד וגם את כתנתו והכתנת לא היתה תפורה כי אם מעשה ארג מלמעלה ועד קצה׃

²⁴They said therefore one to another, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my garments among them, And upon my vesture did they cast lots.

²⁴Et ils dirent entre eux: Ne la déchirons pas, mais tirons au sort à qui elle sera. Cela arriva afin que s'accomplît cette parole de l'Ecriture: Ils se sont partagé mes vêtements, Et ils ont tiré au sort ma tunique. Voilà ce que firent les soldats.

²⁴ויאמרו איש אל אחיו אל נא נקרעה לקרעים אך נפיל עליה גורל למי תהיה למלאת דבר הכתוב יחלקו בגדי להם ועל לבושי יפילו גורל ויעשו כן אנשי הצבא׃

²⁵These things therefore the soldiers did. But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁵Près de la croix de Jésus se tenaient sa mère et la soeur de sa mère, Marie, femme de Clopas, et Marie de Magdala.

²⁵ועל יד צלב ישוע עמדו אמו ואחות אמו מרים אשת קלופס ומרים המגדלית׃

²⁶When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

²⁶Jésus, voyant sa mère, et auprès d'elle le disciple qu'il aimait, dit à sa mère: Femme, voilà ton fils.

²⁶וירא ישוע את אמו ואת תלמידו אשר אהב עמדים אצלו ויאמר אל אמו אשה הנה זה בנך׃

²⁷Then saith he to the disciple, Behold, thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own [home].

²⁷Puis il dit au disciple: Voilà ta mère. Et, dès ce moment, le disciple la prit chez lui.

²⁷ואחר אמר אל תלמידו הנה זאת אמך ומן השעה ההיא אסף אתה התלמיד אל ביתו׃

²⁸After this Jesus, knowing that all things are now finished, that the scripture might be accomplished, saith, I thirst.

²⁸Après cela, Jésus, qui savait que tout était déjà consommé, dit, afin que l'Ecriture fût accomplie: J'ai soif.

²⁸ויהי מאחרי כן כאשר ידע ישוע כי עתה זה כלה הכל למען ימלא הכתוב כלו אמר צמאתי׃

²⁹There was set there a vessel full of vinegar: so they put a sponge full of the vinegar upon hyssop, and brought it to his mouth.

²⁹Il y avait là un vase plein de vinaigre. Les soldats en remplirent une éponge, et, l'ayant fixée à une branche d'hysope, ils l'approchèrent de sa bouche.

²⁹ושם כלי מלא חמץ ויטבלו ספוג בחמץ וישימהו על אזוב ויקריבהו אל פיו׃

³⁰When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

³⁰Quand Jésus eut pris le vinaigre, il dit: Tout est accompli. Et, baissant la tête, il rendit l'esprit.

³⁰ויקח ישוע את החמץ ויאמר כלה ויט את ראשו ויפקד את רוחו׃

³¹The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain on the cross upon the sabbath (for the day of that sabbath was a high [day]), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away.

³¹Dans la crainte que les corps ne restassent sur la croix pendant le sabbat, -car c'était la préparation, et ce jour de sabbat était un grand jour, -les Juifs demandèrent à Pilate qu'on rompît les jambes aux crucifiés, et qu'on les enlevât.

³¹ולמען לא תשארנה הגויות על הצלב ביום השבת כי ערב שבת היה וגדול יום השבת ההוא שאלו היהודים מן פילטוס לשבר את שוקיהם ולהוריד אתם׃

³²The soldiers therefore came, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him:

³²Les soldats vinrent donc, et ils rompirent les jambes au premier, puis à l'autre qui avait été crucifié avec lui.

³²ויבאו אנשי הצבא וישברו את שוקי הראשון והשני הנצלבים עמו׃

³³but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

³³S'étant approchés de Jésus, et le voyant déjà mort, ils ne lui rompirent pas les jambes;

³³ויבאו אל ישוע ובראתם כי כבר מת לא שברו את שוקיו׃

³⁴howbeit one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and straightway there came out blood and water.

³⁴mais un des soldats lui perça le côté avec une lance, et aussitôt il sortit du sang et de l'eau.

³⁴אך אחד מאנשי הצבא דקר בחנית את צדו וכרגע יצא דם ומים׃

³⁵And he that hath seen hath borne witness, and his witness is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye also may believe.

³⁵Celui qui l'a vu en a rendu témoignage, et son témoignage est vrai; et il sait qu'il dit vrai, afin que vous croyiez aussi.

³⁵והראה זאת העיד ועדותו נאמנה והוא יודע כי האמת יגיד למען גם אתם תאמינו׃

³⁶For these things came to pass, that the scripture might be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

³⁶Ces choses sont arrivées, afin que l'Ecriture fût accomplie: Aucun de ses os ne sera brisé.

³⁶כי כל זאת היתה למלאת הכתוב ועצם לא תשברו בו׃

³⁷And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

³⁷Et ailleurs l'Ecriture dit encore: Ils verront celui qu'ils ont percé.

³⁷ועוד כתוב אחר אמר והביט אליו את אשר דקרו׃

³⁸And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave [him] leave. He came therefore, and took away his body.

³⁸Après cela, Joseph d'Arimathée, qui était disciple de Jésus, mais en secret par crainte des Juifs, demanda à Pilate la permission de prendre le corps de Jésus. Et Pilate le permit. Il vint donc, et prit le corps de Jésus.

³⁸ויהי אחרי כן בא יוסף הרמתי והוא תלמיד ישוע אך בסתר מפני היהודים וישאל מאת פילטוס אשר יתנהו לשאת את גופת ישוע וינח לו פילטוס ויבא וישא את גופת ישוע׃

³⁹And there came also Nicodemus, he who at the first came to him by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.

³⁹Nicodème, qui auparavant était allé de nuit vers Jésus, vint aussi, apportant un mélange d'environ cent livres de myrrhe et d'aloès.

³⁹ויבא גם נקדימון אשר בא לפנים בלילה אל ישוע ויבא ערוב מר ואהלות כמאה ליטרין׃

⁴⁰So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

⁴⁰Ils prirent donc le corps de Jésus, et l'enveloppèrent de bandes, avec les aromates, comme c'est la coutume d'ensevelir chez les Juifs.

⁴⁰ויקחו את גופת ישוע ויחתלוה בתכריכין עם הבשמים כאשר נהגים היהודים לקבר את מתיהם׃

⁴¹Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb wherein was never man yet laid.

⁴¹Or, il y avait un jardin dans le lieu où Jésus avait été crucifié, et dans le jardin un sépulcre neuf, où personne encore n'avait été mis.

⁴¹ובמקום אשר נצלב שם היה גן ובגן קבר חדש אשר לא הושם בו איש עד עתה׃

⁴²There then because of the Jews' Preparation (for the tomb was nigh at hand) they laid Jesus.

⁴²Ce fut là qu'ils déposèrent Jésus, à cause de la préparation des Juifs, parce que le sépulcre était proche.

⁴²שם שמו את ישוע כי ערב שבת היה ליהודים והקבר קרוב׃
