¹And these are the inheritances which the children of Israel took in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed unto them,

¹Voici ce que les enfants d'Israël reçurent en héritage dans le pays de Canaan, ce que partagèrent entre eux le sacrificateur Eléazar, Josué, fils de Nun, et les chefs de famille des tribus des enfants d'Israël.

¹ואלה אשר נחלו בני ישראל בארץ כנען אשר נחלו אותם אלעזר הכהן ויהושע בן נון וראשי אבות המטות לבני ישראל׃

²by the lot of their inheritance, as Jehovah commanded by Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe.

²Le partage eut lieu d'après le sort, comme l'Eternel l'avait ordonné par Moïse, pour les neuf tribus et pour la demi-tribu.

²בגורל נחלתם כאשר צוה יהוה ביד משה לתשעת המטות וחצי המטה׃

³For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

³Car Moïse avait donné un héritage aux deux tribus et à la demi-tribu de l'autre côté du Jourdain; mais il n'avait point donné aux Lévites d'héritage parmi eux.

³כי נתן משה נחלת שני המטות וחצי המטה מעבר לירדן וללוים לא נתן נחלה בתוכם׃

⁴For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: and they gave no portion unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for their cattle and for their substance.

⁴Les fils de Joseph formaient deux tribus, Manassé et Ephraïm; et l'on ne donna point de part aux Lévites dans le pays, si ce n'est des villes pour habitation, et les banlieues pour leurs troupeaux et pour leurs biens.

⁴כי היו בני יוסף שני מטות מנשה ואפרים ולא נתנו חלק ללוים בארץ כי אם ערים לשבת ומגרשיהם למקניהם ולקנינם׃

⁵As Jehovah commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

⁵Les enfants d'Israël se conformèrent aux ordres que l'Eternel avait donnés à Moïse, et ils partagèrent le pays.

⁵כאשר צוה יהוה את משה כן עשו בני ישראל ויחלקו את הארץ׃

⁶Then the children of Judah drew nigh unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that Jehovah spake unto Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning thee in Kadesh-barnea.

⁶Les fils de Juda s'approchèrent de Josué, à Guilgal; et Caleb, fils de Jephunné, le Kenizien, lui dit: Tu sais ce que l'Eternel a déclaré à Moïse, homme de Dieu, au sujet de moi et au sujet de toi, à Kadès-Barnéa.

⁶ויגשו בני יהודה אל יהושע בגלגל ויאמר אליו כלב בן יפנה הקנזי אתה ידעת את הדבר אשר דבר יהוה אל משה איש האלהים על אדותי ועל אדותיך בקדש ברנע׃

⁷Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart.

⁷J'étais âgé de quarante ans lorsque Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel, m'envoya de Kadès-Barnéa pour explorer le pays, et je lui fis un rapport avec droiture de coeur.

⁷בן ארבעים שנה אנכי בשלח משה עבד יהוה אתי מקדש ברנע לרגל את הארץ ואשב אתו דבר כאשר עם לבבי׃

⁸Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed Jehovah my God.

⁸Mes frères qui étaient montés avec moi découragèrent le peuple, mais moi je suivis pleinement la voie de l'Eternel, mon Dieu.

⁸ואחי אשר עלו עמי המסיו את לב העם ואנכי מלאתי אחרי יהוה אלהי׃

⁹And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy foot hath trodden shall be an inheritance to thee and to thy children for ever, because thou hast wholly followed Jehovah my God.

⁹Et ce jour-là Moïse jura, en disant: Le pays que ton pied a foulé sera ton héritage à perpétuité, pour toi et pour tes enfants, parce que tu as pleinement suivi la voie de l'Eternel, mon Dieu.

⁹וישבע משה ביום ההוא לאמר אם לא הארץ אשר דרכה רגלך בה לך תהיה לנחלה ולבניך עד עולם כי מלאת אחרי יהוה אלהי׃

¹⁰And now, behold, Jehovah hath kept me alive, as he spake, these forty and five years, from the time that Jehovah spake this word unto Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

¹⁰Maintenant voici, l'Eternel m'a fait vivre, comme il l'a dit. Il y a quarante-cinq ans que l'Eternel parlait ainsi à Moïse, lorsqu'Israël marchait dans le désert; et maintenant voici, je suis âgé aujourd'hui de quatre-vingt-cinq ans.

¹⁰ועתה הנה החיה יהוה אותי כאשר דבר זה ארבעים וחמש שנה מאז דבר יהוה את הדבר הזה אל משה אשר הלך ישראל במדבר ועתה הנה אנכי היום בן חמש ושמונים שנה׃

¹¹As yet I am as strong this day as I as in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, and to go out and to come in.

¹¹Je suis encore vigoureux comme au jour où Moïse m'envoya; j'ai autant de force que j'en avais alors, soit pour combattre, soit pour sortir et pour entrer.

¹¹עודני היום חזק כאשר ביום שלח אותי משה ככחי אז וככחי עתה למלחמה ולצאת ולבוא׃

¹²Now therefore give me this hill-country, whereof Jehovah spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakim were there, and cities great and fortified: it may be that Jehovah will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as Jehovah spake.

¹²Donne-moi donc cette montagne dont l'Eternel a parlé dans ce temps-là; car tu as appris alors qu'il s'y trouve des Anakim, et qu'il y a des villes grandes et fortifiées. L'Eternel sera peut-être avec moi, et je les chasserai, comme l'Eternel a dit.

¹²ועתה תנה לי את ההר הזה אשר דבר יהוה ביום ההוא כי אתה שמעת ביום ההוא כי ענקים שם וערים גדלות בצרות אולי יהוה אותי והורשתים כאשר דבר יהוה׃

¹³And Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.

¹³Josué bénit Caleb, fils de Jephunné, et il lui donna Hébron pour héritage.

¹³ויברכהו יהושע ויתן את חברון לכלב בן יפנה לנחלה׃

¹⁴Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite unto this day; because that he wholly followed Jehovah, the God of Israel.

¹⁴C'est ainsi que Caleb, fils de Jephunné, le Kenizien, a eu jusqu'à ce jour Hébron pour héritage, parce qu'il avait pleinement suivi la voie de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.

¹⁴על כן היתה חברון לכלב בן יפנה הקנזי לנחלה עד היום הזה יען אשר מלא אחרי יהוה אלהי ישראל׃

¹⁵Now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba; [which Arba was] the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.

¹⁵Hébron s'appelait autrefois Kirjath-Arba: Arba avait été l'homme le plus grand parmi les Anakim. Le pays fut dès lors en repos et sans guerre.

¹⁵ושם חברון לפנים קרית ארבע האדם הגדול בענקים הוא והארץ שקטה ממלחמה׃
