1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.
1Jephthé, le Galaadite, était un vaillant héros. Il était fils d'une femme prostituée; et c'est Galaad qui avait engendré Jephthé.
1ויפתח הגלעדי היה גבור חיל והוא בן אשה זונה ויולד גלעד את יפתח׃
2And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.
2La femme de Galaad lui enfanta des fils, qui, devenus grands, chassèrent Jephthé, et lui dirent: Tu n'hériteras pas dans la maison de notre père, car tu es fils d'une autre femme.
2ותלד אשת גלעד לו בנים ויגדלו בני האשה ויגרשו את יפתח ויאמרו לו לא תנחל בבית אבינו כי בן אשה אחרת אתה׃
3Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.
3Et Jephthé s'enfuit loin de ses frères, et il habita dans le pays de Tob. Des gens de rien se rassemblèrent auprès de Jephthé, et ils faisaient avec lui des excursions.
3ויברח יפתח מפני אחיו וישב בארץ טוב ויתלקטו אל יפתח אנשים ריקים ויצאו עמו׃
4And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
4Quelque temps après, les fils d'Ammon firent la guerre à Israël.
4ויהי מימים וילחמו בני עמון עם ישראל׃
5And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;
5Et comme les fils d'Ammon faisaient la guerre à Israël, les anciens de Galaad allèrent chercher Jephthé au pays de Tob.
5ויהי כאשר נלחמו בני עמון עם ישראל וילכו זקני גלעד לקחת את יפתח מארץ טוב׃
6and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
6Ils dirent à Jephthé: Viens, tu seras notre chef, et nous combattrons les fils d'Ammon.
6ויאמרו ליפתח לכה והייתה לנו לקצין ונלחמה בבני עמון׃
7And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
7Jephthé répondit aux anciens de Galaad: N'avez-vous pas eu de la haine pour moi, et ne m'avez-vous pas chassé de la maison de mon père? Pourquoi venez-vous à moi maintenant que vous êtes dans la détresse?
7ויאמר יפתח לזקני גלעד הלא אתם שנאתם אותי ותגרשוני מבית אבי ומדוע באתם אלי עתה כאשר צר לכם׃
8And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
8Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé: Nous revenons à toi maintenant, afin que tu marches avec nous, que tu combattes les fils d'Ammon, et que tu sois notre chef, celui de tous les habitants de Galaad.
8ויאמרו זקני גלעד אל יפתח לכן עתה שבנו אליך והלכת עמנו ונלחמת בבני עמון והיית לנו לראש לכל ישבי גלעד׃
9And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
9Jephthé répondit aux anciens de Galaad: Si vous me ramenez pour combattre les fils d'Ammon, et que l'Eternel les livre devant moi, je serai votre chef.
9ויאמר יפתח אל זקני גלעד אם משיבים אתם אותי להלחם בבני עמון ונתן יהוה אותם לפני אנכי אהיה לכם לראש׃
10And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.
10Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé: Que l'Eternel nous entende, et qu'il juge, si nous ne faisons pas ce que tu dis.
10ויאמרו זקני גלעד אל יפתח יהוה יהיה שמע בינותינו אם לא כדברך כן נעשה׃
11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.
11Et Jephthé partit avec les anciens de Galaad. Le peuple le mit à sa tête et l'établit comme chef, et Jephthé répéta devant l'Eternel, à Mitspa, toutes les paroles qu'il avait prononcées.
11וילך יפתח עם זקני גלעד וישימו העם אותו עליהם לראש ולקצין וידבר יפתח את כל דבריו לפני יהוה במצפה׃
12And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?
12Jephthé envoya des messagers au roi des fils d'Ammon, pour lui dire: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi, que tu viennes contre moi pour faire la guerre à mon pays?
12וישלח יפתח מלאכים אל מלך בני עמון לאמר מה לי ולך כי באת אלי להלחם בארצי׃
13And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those [lands] again peaceably.
13Le roi des fils d'Ammon répondit aux messagers de Jephthé: C'est qu'Israël, quand il est monté d'Egypte, s'est emparé de mon pays, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok et au Jourdain. Rends-le maintenant de bon gré.
13ויאמר מלך בני עמון אל מלאכי יפתח כי לקח ישראל את ארצי בעלותו ממצרים מארנון ועד היבק ועד הירדן ועתה השיבה אתהן בשלום׃
14And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;
14Jephthé envoya de nouveau des messagers au roi des fils d'Ammon,
14ויוסף עוד יפתח וישלח מלאכים אל מלך בני עמון׃
15and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,
15pour lui dire: Ainsi parle Jephthé: Israël ne s'est point emparé du pays de Moab, ni du pays des fils d'Ammon.
15ויאמר לו כה אמר יפתח לא לקח ישראל את ארץ מואב ואת ארץ בני עמון׃
16but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
16Car lorsque Israël est monté d'Egypte, il a marché dans le désert jusqu'à la mer Rouge, et il est arrivé à Kadès.
16כי בעלותם ממצרים וילך ישראל במדבר עד ים סוף ויבא קדשה׃
17then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
17Alors Israël envoya des messagers au roi d'Edom, pour lui dire: Laisse-moi passer par ton pays. Mais le roi d'Edom n'y consentit pas. Il en envoya aussi au roi de Moab, qui refusa. Et Israël resta à Kadès.
17וישלח ישראל מלאכים אל מלך אדום לאמר אעברה נא בארצך ולא שמע מלך אדום וגם אל מלך מואב שלח ולא אבה וישב ישראל בקדש׃
18Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.
18Puis il marcha par le désert, tourna le pays d'Edom et le pays de Moab, et vint à l'orient du pays de Moab; ils campèrent au delà de l'Arnon, sans entrer sur le territoire de Moab, car l'Arnon est la frontière de Moab.
18וילך במדבר ויסב את ארץ אדום ואת ארץ מואב ויבא ממזרח שמש לארץ מואב ויחנון בעבר ארנון ולא באו בגבול מואב כי ארנון גבול מואב׃
19And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
19Israël envoya des messagers à Sihon, roi des Amoréens, roi de Hesbon, et Israël lui dit: Laisse-nous passer par ton pays jusqu'au lieu où nous allons.
19וישלח ישראל מלאכים אל סיחון מלך האמרי מלך חשבון ויאמר לו ישראל נעברה נא בארצך עד מקומי׃
20But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
20Mais Sihon n'eut pas assez confiance en Israël pour le laisser passer sur son territoire; il rassembla tout son peuple, campa à Jahats, et combattit Israël.
20ולא האמין סיחון את ישראל עבר בגבלו ויאסף סיחון את כל עמו ויחנו ביהצה וילחם עם ישראל׃
21And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
21L'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, livra Sihon et tout son peuple entre les mains d'Israël, qui les battit. Israël s'empara de tout le pays des Amoréens établis dans cette contrée.
21ויתן יהוה אלהי ישראל את סיחון ואת כל עמו ביד ישראל ויכום ויירש ישראל את כל ארץ האמרי יושב הארץ ההיא׃
22And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
22Ils s'emparèrent de tout le territoire des Amoréens, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok, et depuis le désert jusqu'au Jourdain.
22ויירשו את כל גבול האמרי מארנון ועד היבק ומן המדבר ועד הירדן׃
23So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?
23Et maintenant que l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, a chassé les Amoréens devant son peuple d'Israël, est-ce toi qui aurais la possession de leur pays?
23ועתה יהוה אלהי ישראל הוריש את האמרי מפני עמו ישראל ואתה תירשנו׃
24Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
24Ce que ton dieu Kemosch te donne à posséder, ne le posséderais-tu pas? Et tout ce que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, a mis en notre possession devant nous, nous ne le posséderions pas!
24הלא את אשר יורישך כמוש אלהיך אותו תירש ואת כל אשר הוריש יהוה אלהינו מפנינו אותו נירש׃
25And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
25Vaux-tu donc mieux que Balak, fils de Tsippor, roi de Moab? A-t-il contesté avec Israël, ou lui a-t-il fait la guerre?
25ועתה הטוב טוב אתה מבלק בן צפור מלך מואב הרוב רב עם ישראל אם נלחם נלחם בם׃
26While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?
26Voilà trois cents ans qu'Israël habite à Hesbon et dans les villes de son ressort, à Aroër et dans les villes de son ressort, et dans toutes les villes qui sont sur les bords de l'Arnon: pourquoi ne les lui avez-vous pas enlevées pendant ce temps-là?
26בשבת ישראל בחשבון ובבנותיה ובערעור ובבנותיה ובכל הערים אשר על ידי ארנון שלש מאות שנה ומדוע לא הצלתם בעת ההיא׃
27I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.
27Je ne t'ai point offensé, et tu agis mal avec moi en me faisant la guerre. Que l'Eternel, le juge, soit aujourd'hui juge entre les enfants d'Israël et les fils d'Ammon!
27ואנכי לא חטאתי לך ואתה עשה אתי רעה להלחם בי ישפט יהוה השפט היום בין בני ישראל ובין בני עמון׃
28Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
28Le roi des fils d'Ammon n'écouta point les paroles que Jephthé lui fit dire.
28ולא שמע מלך בני עמון אל דברי יפתח אשר שלח אליו׃
29Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
29L'esprit de l'Eternel fut sur Jephthé. Il traversa Galaad et Manassé; il passa à Mitspé de Galaad; et de Mitspé de Galaad, il marcha contre les fils d'Ammon.
29ותהי על יפתח רוח יהוה ויעבר את הגלעד ואת מנשה ויעבר את מצפה גלעד וממצפה גלעד עבר בני עמון׃
30And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,
30Jephthé fit un voeu à l'Eternel, et dit: Si tu livres entre mes mains les fils d'Ammon,
30וידר יפתח נדר ליהוה ויאמר אם נתון תתן את בני עמון בידי׃
31then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.
31quiconque sortira des portes de ma maison au-devant de moi, à mon heureux retour de chez les fils d'Ammon, sera consacré à l'Eternel, et je l'offrirai en holocauste.
31והיה היוצא אשר יצא מדלתי ביתי לקראתי בשובי בשלום מבני עמון והיה ליהוה והעליתהו עולה׃
32So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.
32Jephthé marcha contre les fils d'Ammon, et l'Eternel les livra entre ses mains.
32ויעבר יפתח אל בני עמון להלחם בם ויתנם יהוה בידו׃
33And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
33Il leur fit éprouver une très grande défaite, depuis Aroër jusque vers Minnith, espace qui renfermait vingt villes, et jusqu'à Abel-Keramim. Et les fils d'Ammon furent humiliés devant les enfants d'Israël.
33ויכם מערוער ועד בואך מנית עשרים עיר ועד אבל כרמים מכה גדולה מאד ויכנעו בני עמון מפני בני ישראל׃
34And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.
34Jephthé retourna dans sa maison à Mitspa. Et voici, sa fille sortit au-devant de lui avec des tambourins et des danses. C'était son unique enfant; il n'avait point de fils et point d'autre fille.
34ויבא יפתח המצפה אל ביתו והנה בתו יצאת לקראתו בתפים ובמחלות ורק היא יחידה אין לו ממנו בן או בת׃
35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.
35Dès qu'il la vit, il déchira ses vêtements, et dit: Ah! ma fille! tu me jettes dans l'abattement, tu es au nombre de ceux qui me troublent! J'ai fait un voeu à l'Eternel, et je ne puis le révoquer.
35ויהי כראותו אותה ויקרע את בגדיו ויאמר אהה בתי הכרע הכרעתני ואת היית בעכרי ואנכי פציתי פי אל יהוה ולא אוכל לשוב׃
36And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.
36Elle lui dit: Mon père, si tu as fait un voeu à l'Eternel, traite-moi selon ce qui est sorti de ta bouche, maintenant que l'Eternel t'a vengé de tes ennemis, des fils d'Ammon.
36ותאמר אליו אבי פציתה את פיך אל יהוה עשה לי כאשר יצא מפיך אחרי אשר עשה לך יהוה נקמות מאיביך מבני עמון׃
37And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.
37Et elle dit à son père: Que ceci me soit accordé: laisse-moi libre pendant deux mois! Je m'en irai, je descendrai dans les montagnes, et je pleurerai ma virginité avec mes compagnes.
37ותאמר אל אביה יעשה לי הדבר הזה הרפה ממני שנים חדשים ואלכה וירדתי על ההרים ואבכה על בתולי אנכי ורעיתי׃
38And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
38Il répondit: Va! Et il la laissa libre pour deux mois. Elle s'en alla avec ses compagnes, et elle pleura sa virginité sur les montagnes.
38ויאמר לכי וישלח אותה שני חדשים ותלך היא ורעותיה ותבך על בתוליה על ההרים׃
39And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,
39Au bout des deux mois, elle revint vers son père, et il accomplit sur elle le voeu qu'il avait fait. Elle n'avait point connu d'homme. Dès lors s'établit en Israël la coutume
39ויהי מקץ שנים חדשים ותשב אל אביה ויעש לה את נדרו אשר נדר והיא לא ידעה איש ותהי חק בישראל׃
40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
40que tous les ans les filles d'Israël s'en vont célébrer la fille de Jephthé, le Galaadite, quatre jours par année.
40מימים ימימה תלכנה בנות ישראל לתנות לבת יפתח הגלעדי ארבעת ימים בשנה׃
