¹And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:

¹Un envoyé de l'Eternel monta de Guilgal à Bokim, et dit: Je vous ai fait monter hors d'Egypte, et je vous ai amenés dans le pays que j'ai juré à vos pères de vous donner. J'ai dit: Jamais je ne romprai mon alliance avec vous;

¹ויעל מלאך יהוה מן הגלגל אל הבכים ויאמר אעלה אתכם ממצרים ואביא אתכם אל הארץ אשר נשבעתי לאבתיכם ואמר לא אפר בריתי אתכם לעולם׃

²and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?

²et vous, vous ne traiterez point alliance avec les habitants de ce pays, vous renverserez leurs autels. Mais vous n'avez point obéi à ma voix. Pourquoi avez-vous fait cela?

²ואתם לא תכרתו ברית ליושבי הארץ הזאת מזבחותיהם תתצון ולא שמעתם בקלי מה זאת עשיתם׃

³Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

³J'ai dit alors: Je ne les chasserai point devant vous; mais ils seront à vos côtés, et leurs dieux vous seront un piège.

³וגם אמרתי לא אגרש אותם מפניכם והיו לכם לצדים ואלהיהם יהיו לכם למוקש׃

⁴And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁴Lorsque l'envoyé de l'Eternel eut dit ces paroles à tous les enfants d'Israël, le peuple éleva la voix et pleura.

⁴ויהי כדבר מלאך יהוה את הדברים האלה אל כל בני ישראל וישאו העם את קולם ויבכו׃

⁵And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.

⁵Ils donnèrent à ce lieu le nom de Bokim, et ils y offrirent des sacrifices à l'Eternel.

⁵ויקראו שם המקום ההוא בכים ויזבחו שם ליהוה׃

⁶Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

⁶Josué renvoya le peuple, et les enfants d'Israël allèrent chacun dans son héritage pour prendre possession du pays.

⁶וישלח יהושע את העם וילכו בני ישראל איש לנחלתו לרשת את הארץ׃

⁷And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.

⁷Le peuple servit l'Eternel pendant toute la vie de Josué, et pendant toute la vie des anciens qui survécurent à Josué et qui avaient vu toutes les grandes choses que l'Eternel avait faites en faveur d'Israël.

⁷ויעבדו העם את יהוה כל ימי יהושע וכל ימי הזקנים אשר האריכו ימים אחרי יהושוע אשר ראו את כל מעשה יהוה הגדול אשר עשה לישראל׃

⁸And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

⁸Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de l'Eternel, mourut âgé de cent dix ans.

⁸וימת יהושע בן נון עבד יהוה בן מאה ועשר שנים׃

⁹And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

⁹On l'ensevelit dans le territoire qu'il avait eu en partage, à Thimnath-Hérès, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, au nord de la montagne de Gaasch.

⁹ויקברו אותו בגבול נחלתו בתמנת חרס בהר אפרים מצפון להר געש׃

¹⁰And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.

¹⁰Toute cette génération fut recueillie auprès de ses pères, et il s'éleva après elle une autre génération, qui ne connaissait point l'Eternel, ni ce qu'il avait fait en faveur d'Israël.

¹⁰וגם כל הדור ההוא נאספו אל אבותיו ויקם דור אחר אחריהם אשר לא ידעו את יהוה וגם את המעשה אשר עשה לישראל׃

¹¹And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;

¹¹Les enfants d'Israël firent alors ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel, et ils servirent les Baals.

¹¹ויעשו בני ישראל את הרע בעיני יהוה ויעבדו את הבעלים׃

¹²and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.

¹²Ils abandonnèrent l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, qui les avait fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, et ils allèrent après d'autres dieux d'entre les dieux des peuples qui les entouraient; ils se prosternèrent devant eux, et ils irritèrent l'Eternel.

¹²ויעזבו את יהוה אלהי אבותם המוציא אותם מארץ מצרים וילכו אחרי אלהים אחרים מאלהי העמים אשר סביבותיהם וישתחוו להם ויכעסו את יהוה׃

¹³And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

¹³Ils abandonnèrent l'Eternel, et ils servirent Baal et les Astartés.

¹³ויעזבו את יהוה ויעבדו לבעל ולעשתרות׃

¹⁴And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

¹⁴La colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël. Il les livra entre les mains de pillards qui les pillèrent, il les vendit entre les mains de leurs ennemis d'alentour, et ils ne purent plus résister à leurs ennemis.

¹⁴ויחר אף יהוה בישראל ויתנם ביד שסים וישסו אותם וימכרם ביד אויביהם מסביב ולא יכלו עוד לעמד לפני אויביהם׃

¹⁵Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.

¹⁵Partout où ils allaient, la main de l'Eternel était contre eux pour leur faire du mal, comme l'Eternel l'avait dit, comme l'Eternel le leur avait juré. Ils furent ainsi dans une grande détresse.

¹⁵בכל אשר יצאו יד יהוה היתה בם לרעה כאשר דבר יהוה וכאשר נשבע יהוה להם ויצר להם מאד׃

¹⁶And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.

¹⁶L'Eternel suscita des juges, afin qu'ils les délivrassent de la main de ceux qui les pillaient.

¹⁶ויקם יהוה שפטים ויושיעום מיד שסיהם׃

¹⁷And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; [but] they did not so.

¹⁷Mais ils n'écoutèrent pas même leurs juges, car ils se prostituèrent à d'autres dieux, se prosternèrent devant eux. Ils se détournèrent promptement de la voie qu'avaient suivie leurs pères, et ils n'obéirent point comme eux aux commandements de l'Eternel.

¹⁷וגם אל שפטיהם לא שמעו כי זנו אחרי אלהים אחרים וישתחוו להם סרו מהר מן הדרך אשר הלכו אבותם לשמע מצות יהוה לא עשו כן׃

¹⁸And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

¹⁸Lorsque l'Eternel leur suscitait des juges, l'Eternel était avec le juge, et il les délivrait de la main de leurs ennemis pendant toute la vie du juge; car l'Eternel avait pitié de leurs gémissements contre ceux qui les opprimaient et les tourmentaient.

¹⁸וכי הקים יהוה להם שפטים והיה יהוה עם השפט והושיעם מיד איביהם כל ימי השופט כי ינחם יהוה מנאקתם מפני לחציהם ודחקיהם׃

¹⁹But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.

¹⁹Mais, à la mort du juge, ils se corrompaient de nouveau plus que leurs pères, en allant après d'autres dieux pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux, et ils persévéraient dans la même conduite et le même endurcissement.

¹⁹והיה במות השופט ישבו והשחיתו מאבותם ללכת אחרי אלהים אחרים לעבדם ולהשתחות להם לא הפילו ממעלליהם ומדרכם הקשה׃

²⁰And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

²⁰Alors la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il dit: Puisque cette nation a transgressé mon alliance que j'avais prescrite à ses pères, et puisqu'ils n'ont point obéi à ma voix,

²⁰ויחר אף יהוה בישראל ויאמר יען אשר עברו הגוי הזה את בריתי אשר צויתי את אבותם ולא שמעו לקולי׃

²¹I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

²¹je ne chasserai plus devant eux aucune des nations que Josué laissa quand il mourut.

²¹גם אני לא אוסיף להוריש איש מפניהם מן הגוים אשר עזב יהושע וימת׃

²²that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

²²C'est ainsi que je mettrai par elles Israël à l'épreuve, pour savoir s'ils prendront garde ou non de suivre la voie de l'Eternel, comme leurs pères y ont pris garde.

²²למען נסות בם את ישראל השמרים הם את דרך יהוה ללכת בם כאשר שמרו אבותם אם לא׃

²³So Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

²³Et l'Eternel laissa en repos ces nations qu'il n'avait pas livrées entre les mains de Josué, et il ne se hâta point de les chasser.

²³וינח יהוה את הגוים האלה לבלתי הורישם מהר ולא נתנם ביד יהושע׃
