¹Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many [of Israel] as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

¹Voici les nations que l'Eternel laissa pour éprouver par elles Israël, tous ceux qui n'avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan.

¹ואלה הגוים אשר הניח יהוה לנסות בם את ישראל את כל אשר לא ידעו את כל מלחמות כנען׃

²only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof:

²Il voulait seulement que les générations des enfants d'Israël connussent et apprissent la guerre, ceux qui ne l'avaient pas connue auparavant.

²רק למען דעת דרות בני ישראל ללמדם מלחמה רק אשר לפנים לא ידעום׃

³[namely], the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

³Ces nations étaient: les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens, les Sidoniens, et les Héviens qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu'à l'entrée de Hamath.

³חמשת סרני פלשתים וכל הכנעני והצידני והחוי ישב הר הלבנון מהר בעל חרמון עד לבוא חמת׃

⁴And they were [left], to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

⁴Ces nations servirent à mettre Israël à l'épreuve, afin que l'Eternel sût s'ils obéiraient aux commandements qu'il avait prescrits à leurs pères par Moïse.

⁴ויהיו לנסות בם את ישראל לדעת הישמעו את מצות יהוה אשר צוה את אבותם ביד משה׃

⁵And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

⁵Et les enfants d'Israël habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, des Phéréziens, des Héviens et des Jébusiens;

⁵ובני ישראל ישבו בקרב הכנעני החתי והאמרי והפרזי והחוי והיבוסי׃

⁶and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

⁶ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, ils donnèrent à leurs fils leurs propres filles, et ils servirent leurs dieux.

⁶ויקחו את בנותיהם להם לנשים ואת בנותיהם נתנו לבניהם ויעבדו את אלהיהם׃

⁷And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.

⁷Les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel, ils oublièrent l'Eternel, et ils servirent les Baals et les idoles.

⁷ויעשו בני ישראל את הרע בעיני יהוה וישכחו את יהוה אלהיהם ויעבדו את הבעלים ואת האשרות׃

⁸Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

⁸La colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains de Cuschan-Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie. Et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis huit ans à Cuschan-Rischeathaïm.

⁸ויחר אף יהוה בישראל וימכרם ביד כושן רשעתים מלך ארם נהרים ויעבדו בני ישראל את כושן רשעתים שמנה שנים׃

⁹And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

⁹Les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Eternel, et l'Eternel leur suscita un libérateur qui les délivra, Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère cadet de Caleb.

⁹ויזעקו בני ישראל אל יהוה ויקם יהוה מושיע לבני ישראל ויושיעם את עתניאל בן קנז אחי כלב הקטן ממנו׃

¹⁰And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.

¹⁰L'esprit de l'Eternel fut sur lui. Il devint juge en Israël, et il partit pour la guerre. L'Eternel livra entre ses mains Cuschan-Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et sa main fut puissante contre Cuschan-Rischeathaïm.

¹⁰ותהי עליו רוח יהוה וישפט את ישראל ויצא למלחמה ויתן יהוה בידו את כושן רשעתים מלך ארם ותעז ידו על כושן רשעתים׃

¹¹And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

¹¹Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans. Et Othniel, fils de Kenaz, mourut.

¹¹ותשקט הארץ ארבעים שנה וימת עתניאל בן קנז׃

¹²And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.

¹²Les enfants d'Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel; et l'Eternel fortifia Eglon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils avaient fait ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel.

¹²ויספו בני ישראל לעשות הרע בעיני יהוה ויחזק יהוה את עגלון מלך מואב על ישראל על כי עשו את הרע בעיני יהוה׃

¹³And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.

¹³Eglon réunit à lui les fils d'Ammon et les Amalécites, et il se mit en marche. Il battit Israël, et ils s'emparèrent de la ville des palmiers.

¹³ויאסף אליו את בני עמון ועמלק וילך ויך את ישראל ויירשו את עיר התמרים׃

¹⁴And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁴Et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis dix-huit ans à Eglon, roi de Moab.

¹⁴ויעבדו בני ישראל את עגלון מלך מואב שמונה עשרה שנה׃

¹⁵But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.

¹⁵Les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Eternel, et l'Eternel leur suscita un libérateur, Ehud, fils de Guéra, Benjamite, qui ne se servait pas de la main droite. Les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Eglon, roi de Moab.

¹⁵ויזעקו בני ישראל אל יהוה ויקם יהוה להם מושיע את אהוד בן גרא בן הימיני איש אטר יד ימינו וישלחו בני ישראל בידו מנחה לעגלון מלך מואב׃

¹⁶And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

¹⁶Ehud se fit une épée à deux tranchants, longue d'une coudée, et il la ceignit sous ses vêtements, au côté droit.

¹⁶ויעש לו אהוד חרב ולה שני פיות גמד ארכה ויחגר אותה מתחת למדיו על ירך ימינו׃

¹⁷And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁷Il offrit le présent à Eglon, roi de Moab: or Eglon était un homme très gras.

¹⁷ויקרב את המנחה לעגלון מלך מואב ועגלון איש בריא מאד׃

¹⁸And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute.

¹⁸Lorsqu'il eut achevé d'offrir le présent, il renvoya les gens qui l'avaient apporté.

¹⁸ויהי כאשר כלה להקריב את המנחה וישלח את העם נשאי המנחה׃

¹⁹But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

¹⁹Il revint lui-même depuis les carrières près de Guilgal, et il dit: O roi! j'ai quelque chose de secret à te dire. Le roi dit: Silence! Et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui sortirent.

¹⁹והוא שב מן הפסילים אשר את הגלגל ויאמר דבר סתר לי אליך המלך ויאמר הס ויצאו מעליו כל העמדים עליו׃

²⁰And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

²⁰Ehud l'aborda comme il était assis seul dans sa chambre d'été, et il dit: J'ai une parole de Dieu pour toi. Eglon se leva de son siège.

²⁰ואהוד בא אליו והוא ישב בעלית המקרה אשר לו לבדו ויאמר אהוד דבר אלהים לי אליך ויקם מעל הכסא׃

²¹And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

²¹Alors Ehud avança la main gauche, tira l'épée de son côté droit, et la lui enfonça dans le ventre.

²¹וישלח אהוד את יד שמאלו ויקח את החרב מעל ירך ימינו ויתקעה בבטנו׃

²²and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

²²La poignée même entra après la lame, et la graisse se referma autour de la lame; car il ne retira pas du ventre l'épée, qui sortit par derrière.

²²ויבא גם הנצב אחר הלהב ויסגר החלב בעד הלהב כי לא שלף החרב מבטנו ויצא הפרשדנה׃

²³Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them.

²³Ehud sortit par le portique, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute, et tira le verrou.

²³ויצא אהוד המסדרונה ויסגר דלתות העליה בעדו ונעל׃

²⁴Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber.

²⁴Quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs du roi vinrent et regardèrent; et voici, les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées au verrou. Ils dirent: Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans la chambre d'été.

²⁴והוא יצא ועבדיו באו ויראו והנה דלתות העליה נעלות ויאמרו אך מסיך הוא את רגליו בחדר המקרה׃

²⁵And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened [them], and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

²⁵Ils attendirent longtemps; et comme il n'ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre haute, ils prirent la clé et ouvrirent, et voici, leur maître était mort, étendu par terre.

²⁵ויחילו עד בוש והנה איננו פתח דלתות העליה ויקחו את המפתח ויפתחו והנה אדניהם נפל ארצה מת׃

²⁶And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.

²⁶Pendant leurs délais, Ehud prit la fuite, dépassa les carrières, et se sauva à Seïra.

²⁶ואהוד נמלט עד התמהמהם והוא עבר את הפסילים וימלט השעירתה׃

²⁷And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.

²⁷Dès qu'il fut arrivé, il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d'Ephraïm. Les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et il se mit à leur tête.

²⁷ויהי בבואו ויתקע בשופר בהר אפרים וירדו עמו בני ישראל מן ההר והוא לפניהם׃

²⁸And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.

²⁸Il leur dit: Suivez-moi, car l'Eternel a livré entre vos mains les Moabites, vos ennemis. Ils descendirent après lui, s'emparèrent des gués du Jourdain vis-à-vis de Moab, et ne laissèrent passer personne.

²⁸ויאמר אלהם רדפו אחרי כי נתן יהוה את איביכם את מואב בידכם וירדו אחריו וילכדו את מעברות הירדן למואב ולא נתנו איש לעבר׃

²⁹And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.

²⁹Ils battirent dans ce temps-là environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous robustes, tous vaillants, et pas un n'échappa.

²⁹ויכו את מואב בעת ההיא כעשרת אלפים איש כל שמן וכל איש חיל ולא נמלט איש׃

³⁰So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

³⁰En ce jour, Moab fut humilié sous la main d'Israël. Et le pays fut en repos pendant quatre-vingts ans.

³⁰ותכנע מואב ביום ההוא תחת יד ישראל ותשקט הארץ שמונים שנה׃

³¹And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel.

³¹Après lui, il y eut Schamgar, fils d'Anath. Il battit six cents hommes des Philistins avec un aiguillon à boeufs. Et lui aussi fut un libérateur d'Israël.

³¹ואחריו היה שמגר בן ענת ויך את פלשתים שש מאות איש במלמד הבקר וישע גם הוא את ישראל׃
