¹Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

²even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word,

²suivant ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui ont été des témoins oculaires dès le commencement et sont devenus des ministres de la parole,

²כאשר מסרום לנו הראים אתם בעיניהם מתחלה ואשר היו משרתי הדבר׃

³it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus;

³il m'a aussi semblé bon, après avoir fait des recherches exactes sur toutes ces choses depuis leur origine, de te les exposer par écrit d'une manière suivie, excellent Théophile,

³חשבתי לטוב גם אני החפש כל הדברים היטב מראשיתם לכתבם אליך בסדר תאופילוס האדיר׃

⁴that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed.

⁴afin que tu reconnaisses la certitude des enseignements que tu as reçus.

⁴למען תדע קשט האמרים אשר חנכת בם׃

⁵There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

⁵Du temps d'Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un sacrificateur, nommé Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia; sa femme était d'entre les filles d'Aaron, et s'appelait Elisabeth.

⁵כהן היה בימי הורדוס מלך יהודה זכריה שמו ממשמרת אביה ולו אשה מבנות אהרן ושמה אלישבע׃

⁶And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁶Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, observant d'une manière irréprochable tous les commandements et toutes les ordonnances du Seigneur.

⁶ושניהם היו צדיקים לפני האלהים והלכי תם בכל מצות יהוה ובחקתיו׃

⁷And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were [now] well stricken in years.

⁷Ils n'avaient point d'enfants, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile; et ils étaient l'un et l'autre avancés en âge.

⁷ולא היה להם ילד כי אלישבע עקרה ושניהם באו בימים׃

⁸Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

⁸Or, pendant qu'il s'acquittait de ses fonctions devant Dieu, selon le tour de sa classe,

⁸ויהי היום ויכהן לפני אלהים בסדר משמרתו׃

⁹according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

⁹il fut appelé par le sort, d'après la règle du sacerdoce, à entrer dans le temple du Seigneur pour offrir le parfum.

⁹וכמשפט עבודת הכהנים יצא גורלו להקטיר קטרת ויבא אל היכל יהוה׃

¹⁰And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense.

¹⁰Toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en prière, à l'heure du parfum.

¹⁰וכל קהל העם היו מתפללים בחוץ בעת הקטרת׃

¹¹And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of altar of incense.

¹¹Alors un ange du Seigneur apparut à Zacharie, et se tint debout à droite de l'autel des parfums.

¹¹וירא אליו מלאך יהוה עמד לימין מזבח הקטרת׃

¹²And Zacharias was troubled when he saw [him], and fear fell upon him.

¹²Zacharie fut troublé en le voyant, et la frayeur s'empara de lui.

¹²ויבהל זכריה בראותו אתו ואימה נפלה עליו׃

¹³But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

¹³Mais l'ange lui dit: Ne crains point, Zacharie; car ta prière a été exaucée. Ta femme Elisabeth t'enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jean.

¹³ויאמר אליו המלאך אל תירא זכריהו כי נשמעה תפלתך ואלישבע אשתך תלד לך בן וקראת שמו יוחנן׃

¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

¹⁴Il sera pour toi un sujet de joie et d'allégresse, et plusieurs se réjouiront de sa naissance.

¹⁴והיה לך לשמחה וגיל ורבים ישמחו בהולדו׃

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

¹⁵Car il sera grand devant le Seigneur. Il ne boira ni vin, ni liqueur enivrante, et il sera rempli de l'Esprit-Saint dès le sein de sa mère;

¹⁵כי גדול יהיה לפני יהוה ויין ושכר לא ישתה ורוח הקדש ימלא בעודנו בבטן אמו׃

¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall be turn unto the Lord their God.

¹⁶il ramènera plusieurs des fils d'Israël au Seigneur, leur Dieu;

¹⁶ורבים מבני ישראל ישיב אל יהוה אלהיהם׃

¹⁷And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient [to walk] in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared [for him].

¹⁷il marchera devant Dieu avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Elie, pour ramener les coeurs des pères vers les enfants, et les rebelles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé.

¹⁷והוא ילך לפניו ברוח אליהו ובגבורתו להשיב את לב אבות על בנים ואת הסוררים לתבונת הצדיקים להעמיד ליהוה עם מתקן׃

¹⁸And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

¹⁸Zacharie dit à l'ange: A quoi reconnaîtrai-je cela? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge.

¹⁸ויאמר זכריה אל המלאך במה אדע זאת כי אני זקנתי ואשתי באה בימים׃

¹⁹And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.

¹⁹L'ange lui répondit: Je suis Gabriel, je me tiens devant Dieu; j'ai été envoyé pour te parler, et pour t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.

¹⁹ויען המלאך ויאמר אליו אני גבריאל העומד לפני האלהים ושלוח אנכי לדבר אליך ולבשרך את זאת׃

²⁰And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

²⁰Et voici, tu seras muet, et tu ne pourras parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps.

²⁰והנה תאלם ולא תוכל לדבר עד היום אשר תהיה זאת תחת כי לא האמנת בדברי אשר ימלאו למועדם׃

²¹And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple.

²¹Cependant, le peuple attendait Zacharie, s'étonnant de ce qu'il restait si longtemps dans le temple.

²¹והעם היה מחכה לזכריה ויתמהו כי אחר בהיכל׃

²²And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb.

²²Quand il sortit, il ne put leur parler, et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans le temple; il leur faisait des signes, et il resta muet.

²²ויהי בצאתו לא יכל לדבר אליהם וידעו כי מראה ראה בהיכל וירמז להם ועודנו נאלם׃

²³And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house.

²³Lorsque ses jours de service furent écoulés, il s'en alla chez lui.

²³ויהי כאשר מלאו ימי עבדתו וילך לו אל ביתו׃

²⁴And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying,

²⁴Quelque temps après, Elisabeth, sa femme, devint enceinte. Elle se cacha pendant cinq mois, disant:

²⁴ויהי אחרי הימים האלה ותהר אלישבע אשתו ותתחבא חמשה חדשים ותאמר׃

²⁵Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon [me], to take away my reproach among men.

²⁵C'est la grâce que le Seigneur m'a faite, quand il a jeté les yeux sur moi pour ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes.

²⁵ככה עשה לי יהוה בימי פקדו אותי לאסף את חרפתי בתוך בני אדם׃

²⁶Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁶Au sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth,

²⁶ויהי בחדש הששי וישלח המלאך גבריאל מאת האלהים גלילה אל עיר אשר שמה נצרת׃

²⁷to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

²⁷auprès d'une vierge fiancée à un homme de la maison de David, nommé Joseph. Le nom de la vierge était Marie.

²⁷אל בתולה מארשה לאיש אשר שמו יוסף מבית דוד ושם הבתולה מרים׃

²⁸And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord [is] with thee.

²⁸L'ange entra chez elle, et dit: Je te salue, toi à qui une grâce a été faite; le Seigneur est avec toi.

²⁸ויבא המלאך אליה החדרה ויאמר שלום לך אשת חן יהוה עמך ברוכה את בנשים׃

²⁹But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be.

²⁹Troublée par cette parole, Marie se demandait ce que pouvait signifier une telle salutation.

²⁹והיא בראותה נבהלה לדברו ותאמר בלבה מה היא הברכה הזאת׃

³⁰And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.

³⁰L'ange lui dit: Ne crains point, Marie; car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu.

³⁰ויאמר לה המלאך אל תיראי מרים כי מצאת חן לפני האלהים׃

³¹And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

³¹Et voici, tu deviendras enceinte, et tu enfanteras un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.

³¹והנך הרה וילדת בן וקראת את שמו ישוע׃

³²He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

³²Il sera grand et sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut, et le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David, son père.

³²והוא גדול יהיה ובן עליון יקרא ויהוה אלהים יתן לו את כסא דוד אביו׃

³³and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

³³Il règnera sur la maison de Jacob éternellement, et son règne n'aura point de fin.

³³ועל בית יעקב ימלך לעולם ועד ולמלכותו אין קץ׃

³⁴And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

³⁴Marie dit à l'ange: Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point d'homme?

³⁴ותאמר מרים אל המלאך איך תהיה זאת ואני אינני ידעת איש׃

³⁵And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God.

³⁵L'ange lui répondit: Le Saint-Esprit viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre. C'est pourquoi le saint enfant qui naîtra de toi sera appelé Fils de Dieu.

³⁵ויען המלאך ויאמר אליה רוח הקדש תבוא עליך וגבורת עליון תצל עליך על כן גם לקדוש הילוד יקרא בן אלהים׃

³⁶And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren.

³⁶Voici, Elisabeth, ta parente, a conçu, elle aussi, un fils en sa vieillesse, et celle qui était appelée stérile est dans son sixième mois.

³⁶והנה אלישבע קרובתך אשר קראו לה עקרה גם היא הרתה בן בזקנתה וזה לה החדש הששי׃

³⁷For no word from God shall be void of power.

³⁷Car rien n'est impossible à Dieu.

³⁷כי לא יפלא מאלהים כל דבר׃

³⁸And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

³⁸Marie dit: Je suis la servante du Seigneur; qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole! Et l'ange la quitta.

³⁸ותאמר מרים הנני שפחת יהוה יהי לי כדברך ויצא מאתה המלאך׃

³⁹And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah;

³⁹Dans ce même temps, Marie se leva, et s'en alla en hâte vers les montagnes, dans une ville de Juda.

³⁹ותקם מרים בימים ההם ותמהר ללכת ההרה אל עיר יהודה׃

⁴⁰and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth.

⁴⁰Elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Elisabeth.

⁴⁰ותבא בית זכריה ותברך את אלישבע׃

⁴¹And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit;

⁴¹Dès qu'Elisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, son enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.

⁴¹ויהי כשמע אלישבע את ברכת מרים וירקד הילד במעיה ותמלא אלישבע רוח הקדש׃

⁴²and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb.

⁴²Elle s'écria d'une voix forte: Tu es bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de ton sein est béni.

⁴²ותקרא בקול גדול ותאמר ברוכה את בנשים וברוך פרי בטנך׃

⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me?

⁴³Comment m'est-il accordé que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne auprès de moi?

⁴³ומאין לי זאת אשר אם אדני באה אלי׃

⁴⁴For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

⁴⁴Car voici, aussitôt que la voix de ta salutation a frappé mon oreille, l'enfant a tressailli d'allégresse dans mon sein.

⁴⁴כי קול ברכתך בא באזני והנה רקד בשמחה הילד במעי׃

⁴⁵And blessed [is] she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord.

⁴⁵Heureuse celle qui a cru, parce que les choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur auront leur accomplissement.

⁴⁵ואשרי המאמינה כי המלא תמלא אשר דבר לה מאת יהוה׃

⁴⁶And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

⁴⁶Et Marie dit: Mon âme exalte le Seigneur,

⁴⁶ותאמר מרים רוממה נפשי את יהוה׃

⁴⁷And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

⁴⁷Et mon esprit se réjouit en Dieu, mon Sauveur,

⁴⁷ותגל רוחי באלהי ישעי׃

⁴⁸For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

⁴⁸Parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Car voici, désormais toutes les générations me diront bienheureuse,

⁴⁸]94-84[ אשר ראה בעני אמתו כי הנה מעתה כל הדרות יאשרוני כי גדלות עשה לי שדי וקדוש שמו׃

⁴⁹For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name.

⁴⁹Parce que le Tout-Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Son nom est saint,

⁴⁹]94-84[׃

⁵⁰And his mercy is unto generations and generations On them that fear him.

⁵⁰Et sa miséricorde s'étend d'âge en âge Sur ceux qui le craignent.

⁵⁰וחסדו לדור דורים על יראיו׃

⁵¹He hath showed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.

⁵¹Il a déployé la force de son bras; Il a dispersé ceux qui avaient dans le coeur des pensées orgueilleuses.

⁵¹גבורות עשה בזרעו פזר גאים במזמות לבבם׃

⁵²He hath put down princes from [their] thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree.

⁵²Il a renversé les puissants de leurs trônes, Et il a élevé les humbles.

⁵²הרס נדיבים מכסאותו וירם שפלים׃

⁵³The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away.

⁵³Il a rassasié de biens les affamés, Et il a renvoyé les riches à vide.

⁵³רעבים מלא טוב ועשירים שלח ריקם׃

⁵⁴He hath given help to Israel his servant, That he might remember mercy

⁵⁴Il a secouru Israël, son serviteur, Et il s'est souvenu de sa miséricorde, -

⁵⁴תמך בישראל עבדו לזכר את רחמיו׃

⁵⁵(As he spake unto our fathers) Toward Abraham and his seed for ever.

⁵⁵Comme il l'avait dit à nos pères, -Envers Abraham et sa postérité pour toujours.

⁵⁵כאשר דבר אל אבותינו לאברהם ולזרעו עד עולם׃

⁵⁶And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house.

⁵⁶Marie demeura avec Elisabeth environ trois mois. Puis elle retourna chez elle.

⁵⁶ותשב מרים עמה כשלשה חדשים ותשב לביתה׃

⁵⁷Now Elisabeth's time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁷Le temps où Elisabeth devait accoucher arriva, et elle enfanta un fils.

⁵⁷וימלאו ימי אלישבע ללדת ותלד בן׃

⁵⁸And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁸Ses voisins et ses parents apprirent que le Seigneur avait fait éclater envers elle sa miséricorde, et ils se réjouirent avec elle.

⁵⁸וישמעו שכניה וקרוביה כי הגדיל יהוה את חסדו עמה וישמחו אתה׃

⁵⁹And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father.

⁵⁹Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant, et ils l'appelaient Zacharie, du nom de son père.

⁵⁹ויהי ביום השמיני ויבאו למול את הילד ויקראו אתו זכריה על שם אביו׃

⁶⁰And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

⁶⁰Mais sa mère prit la parole, et dit: Non, il sera appelé Jean.

⁶⁰ותען אמו ותאמר לא כי יוחנן יקרא׃

⁶¹And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

⁶¹Ils lui dirent: Il n'y a dans ta parenté personne qui soit appelé de ce nom.

⁶¹ויאמרו אליה אין איש במשפחתך אשר נקרא בשם הזה׃

⁶²And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called.

⁶²Et ils firent des signes à son père pour savoir comment il voulait qu'on l'appelle.

⁶²וירמזו אל אביו לדעת מה השם אשר יחפץ להקרא לו׃

⁶³And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

⁶³Zacharie demanda des tablettes, et il écrivit: Jean est son nom. Et tous furent dans l'étonnement.

⁶³וישאל לוח ויכתב עליו לאמר יוחנן שמו ויתמהו כלם׃

⁶⁴And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue [loosed], and he spake, blessing God.

⁶⁴Au même instant, sa bouche s'ouvrit, sa langue se délia, et il parlait, bénissant Dieu.

⁶⁴ויפתח פיו ולשונו פתאם וידבר ויברך את האלהים׃

⁶⁵And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

⁶⁵La crainte s'empara de tous les habitants d'alentour, et, dans toutes les montagnes de la Judée, on s'entretenait de toutes ces choses.

⁶⁵ותפל אימה על כל שכניהם ויספר כל הדברים האלה בכל הרי יהודה׃

⁶⁶And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁶Tous ceux qui les apprirent les gardèrent dans leur coeur, en disant: Que sera donc cet enfant? Et la main du Seigneur était avec lui.

⁶⁶וישימו כל השמעים אל לבם לאמר מה אפוא יהיה הילד הזה ויד יהוה היתה עמו׃

⁶⁷And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁷Zacharie, son père, fut rempli du Saint-Esprit, et il prophétisa, en ces mots:

⁶⁷וימלא זכריה אביו רוח הקדש וינבא לאמר׃

⁶⁸Blessed [be] the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people,

⁶⁸Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, De ce qu'il a visité et racheté son peuple,

⁶⁸ברוך יהוה אלהי ישראל כי פקד את עמו וישלח לו פדות׃

⁶⁹And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of his servant David

⁶⁹Et nous a suscité un puissant Sauveur Dans la maison de David, son serviteur,

⁶⁹וירם לנו קרן ישועה בבית דוד עבדו׃

⁷⁰(As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old),

⁷⁰Comme il l'avait annoncé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes des temps anciens, -

⁷⁰כאשר דבר בפי נביאיו הקדושים אשר מעולם׃

⁷¹Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

⁷¹Un Sauveur qui nous délivre de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent!

⁷¹ישועה מאיבינו ומיד כל שנאינו׃

⁷²To show mercy towards, our fathers, And to remember his holy covenant;

⁷²C'est ainsi qu'il manifeste sa miséricorde envers nos pères, Et se souvient de sa sainte alliance,

⁷²לעשות חסד עם אבותינו ולזכר את ברית קדשו׃

⁷³The oath which he spake unto Abraham our father,

⁷³Selon le serment par lequel il avait juré à Abraham, notre père,

⁷³את השבועה אשר נשבע לאברהם אבינו׃

⁷⁴To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies Should serve him without fear,

⁷⁴De nous permettre, après que nous serions délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, De le servir sans crainte,

⁷⁴להצילנו מיד איבינו ולתתנו לעבדו בלי פחד׃

⁷⁵In holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

⁷⁵En marchant devant lui dans la sainteté et dans la justice tous les jours de notre vie.

⁷⁵בתמים ובצדקה לפניו כל ימי חיינו׃

⁷⁶Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways;

⁷⁶Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut; Car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur, pour préparer ses voies,

⁷⁶ואתה הילד נביא עליון תקרא כי לפני יהוה תלך לפנות את דרכיו׃

⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins,

⁷⁷Afin de donner à son peuple la connaissance du salut Par le pardon de ses péchés,

⁷⁷לתת דעת הישועה לעמו בסליחת חטאתיהם׃

⁷⁸Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us,

⁷⁸Grâce aux entrailles de la miséricorde de notre Dieu, En vertu de laquelle le soleil levant nous a visités d'en haut,

⁷⁸ברחמי חסד אלהינו אשר בהם פקדנו הנגה ממרום׃

⁷⁹To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace.

⁷⁹Pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et dans l'ombre de la mort, Pour diriger nos pas dans le chemin de la paix.

⁷⁹להאיר לישבי חשך וצלמות ולהכין את רגלינו אל דרך השלום׃

⁸⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.

⁸⁰Or, l'enfant croissait, et se fortifiait en esprit. Et il demeura dans les déserts, jusqu'au jour où il se présenta devant Israël.

⁸⁰ויגדל הילד ויחזק ברוח ויהי במדברות עד יום הראתו אל ישראל׃
