¹Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled.

²This was the first enrolment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

²Ce premier recensement eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.

²וזה המפקד היה הראשון בהיות קוריניוס שליט בסוריא׃

³And all went to enrol themselves, every one to his own city.

³Tous allaient se faire inscrire, chacun dans sa ville.

³וילכו כלם להתפקד איש לעירו׃

⁴And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;

⁴Joseph aussi monta de la Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, pour se rendre en Judée, dans la ville de David, appelée Bethléhem, parce qu'il était de la maison et de la famille de David,

⁴ויעל גם יוסף מן הגליל מעיר נצרת אל יהודה לעיר דוד הנקראה בית לחם כי היה מבית דוד וממשפחתו׃

⁵to enrol himself with Mary, who was betrothed to him, being great with child.

⁵afin de se faire inscrire avec Marie, sa fiancée, qui était enceinte.

⁵להתפקד עם מרים המארשה לו והיא הרה׃

⁶And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were fulfilled that she should be delivered.

⁶Pendant qu'ils étaient là, le temps où Marie devait accoucher arriva,

⁶ויהי בהיותם שם וימלאו ימיה ללדת׃

⁷And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

⁷et elle enfanta son fils premier-né. Elle l'emmaillota, et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu'il n'y avait pas de place pour eux dans l'hôtellerie.

⁷ותלד את בנה הבכור ותחתלהו ותשכיבהו באבוס כי לא היה להם מקום במלון׃

⁸And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.

⁸Il y avait, dans cette même contrée, des bergers qui passaient dans les champs les veilles de la nuit pour garder leurs troupeaux.

⁸ורעים היו בארץ ההיא לנים בשדה ושמרים את משמרות הלילה בעדרם׃

⁹And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

⁹Et voici, un ange du Seigneur leur apparut, et la gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d'eux. Ils furent saisis d'une grande frayeur.

⁹והנה מלאך יהוה נצב עליהם וכבוד יהוה הופיע עליהם מסביב וייראו יראה גדולה׃

¹⁰And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people:

¹⁰Mais l'ange leur dit: Ne craignez point; car je vous annonce une bonne nouvelle, qui sera pour tout le peuple le sujet d'une grande joie:

¹⁰ויאמר אליהם המלאך אל תיראו כי הנני מבשר אתכם שמחה גדולה אשר תהיה לכל העם׃

¹¹for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

¹¹c'est qu'aujourd'hui, dans la ville de David, il vous est né un Sauveur, qui est le Christ, le Seigneur.

¹¹כי היום ילד לכם בעיר דוד מושיע אשר הוא המשיח האדון׃

¹²And this [is] the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.

¹²Et voici à quel signe vous le reconnaîtrez: vous trouverez un enfant emmailloté et couché dans une crèche.

¹²וזה לכם האות תמצאון ילד מחתל ומנח באבוס׃

¹³And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

¹³Et soudain il se joignit à l'ange une multitude de l'armée céleste, louant Dieu et disant:

¹³ויהי פתאם אצל המלאך המון צבא השמים והם משבחים את האלהים ואמרים׃

¹⁴Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom he is well pleased.

¹⁴Gloire à Dieu dans les lieux très hauts, Et paix sur la terre parmi les hommes qu'il agrée!

¹⁴כבוד במרומים לאלהים ובארץ שלום בבני אדם רצונו׃

¹⁵And it came to pass, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

¹⁵Lorsque les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres: Allons jusqu'à Bethléhem, et voyons ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.

¹⁵ויהי כאשר עלו מעליהם המלאכים השמימה ויאמרו הרעים איש אל רעהו נעברה נא עד בית לחם ונראה המעשה הזה אשר הודיענו יהוה׃

¹⁶And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.

¹⁶Ils y allèrent en hâte, et ils trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, et le petit enfant couché dans la crèche.

¹⁶וימהרו לבוא וימצאו את מרים ואת יוסף ואת הילד שכב באבוס׃

¹⁷And when they saw it, they made known concerning the saying which was spoken to them about this child.

¹⁷Après l'avoir vu, ils racontèrent ce qui leur avait été dit au sujet de ce petit enfant.

¹⁷ויראו וישמיעו את הדבר הנאמר אליהם על הגער הזה׃

¹⁸And all that heard it wondered at the things which were spoken unto them by the shepherds.

¹⁸Tous ceux qui les entendirent furent dans l'étonnement de ce que leur disaient les bergers.

¹⁸וכל השמעים תמהו על הדברים אשר דברו אליהם הרעים׃

¹⁹But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.

¹⁹Marie gardait toutes ces choses, et les repassait dans son coeur.

¹⁹ומרים שמרה את הדברים האלה ותחשבם בלבה׃

²⁰And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken unto them.

²⁰Et les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu pour tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu, et qui était conforme à ce qui leur avait été annoncé.

²⁰וישובו הרעים מהללים ומשבחים את האלהים על כל אשר שמעו וראו כפי אשר נאמר אליהם׃

²¹And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called JESUS, which was so called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

²¹Le huitième jour, auquel l'enfant devait être circoncis, étant arrivé, on lui donna le nom de Jésus, nom qu'avait indiqué l'ange avant qu'il fût conçu dans le sein de sa mère.

²¹ויהי במלאת לנער שמנה ימים וימול ויקרא שמו ישוע כשם אשר קרא לו המלאך בטרם הרה בבטן׃

²²And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord

²²Et, quand les jours de leur purification furent accomplis, selon la loi de Moïse, Joseph et Marie le portèrent à Jérusalem, pour le présenter au Seigneur, -

²²וימלאו ימי טהרה לפי תורת משה ויעלהו לירושלים להעמידו לפני יהוה׃

²³(as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord),

²³suivant ce qui est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur: Tout mâle premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur, -

²³כאשר כתוב בתורת יהוה כל זכר פטר רחם יקרא קדש ליהוה׃

²⁴and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

²⁴et pour offrir en sacrifice deux tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons, comme cela est prescrit dans la loi du Seigneur.

²⁴ולתת קרבן כאמור בתורת יהוה שתי תרים או שני בני יונה׃

²⁵And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

²⁵Et voici, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme appelé Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux, il attendait la consolation d'Israël, et l'Esprit-Saint était sur lui.

²⁵והנה איש היה בירושלים ושמו שמעון והוא איש צדיק וחסיד מחכה לנחמת ישראל ורוח הקדש היה עליו׃

²⁶And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

²⁶Il avait été divinement averti par le Saint-Esprit qu'il ne mourrait point avant d'avoir vu le Christ du Seigneur.

²⁶ולו נגלה ברוח הקדש כי לא יראה מות עד ראותו את משיח יהוה׃

²⁷And he came in the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning him after the custom of the law,

²⁷Il vint au temple, poussé par l'Esprit. Et, comme les parents apportaient le petit enfant Jésus pour accomplir à son égard ce qu'ordonnait la loi,

²⁷ויבא ברוח אל המקדש ויהי כאשר הביאו הוריו את הנער ישוע לעשות עליו כמשפט התורה׃

²⁸then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,

²⁸il le reçut dans ses bras, bénit Dieu, et dit:

²⁸ויקחהו על זרעותיו ויברך את האלהים ויאמר׃

²⁹Now lettest thou thy servant depart, Lord, According to thy word, in peace;

²⁹Maintenant, Seigneur, tu laisses ton serviteur S'en aller en paix, selon ta parole.

²⁹עתה תפטר את עבדך כדברך אדני בשלום׃

³⁰For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

³⁰Car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,

³⁰כי ראו עיני את ישועתך׃

³¹Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples;

³¹Salut que tu as préparé devant tous les peuples,

³¹אשר הכינות לפני כל העמים׃

³²A light for revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of thy people Israel.

³²Lumière pour éclairer les nations, Et gloire d'Israël, ton peuple.

³²אור לגלות עיני הגוים ותפארת ישראל עמך׃

³³And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him;

³³Son père et sa mère étaient dans l'admiration des choses qu'on disait de lui.

³³ויוסף ואמו תמהים על הדברים הנאמרים עליו׃

³⁴and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this [child] is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against;

³⁴Siméon les bénit, et dit à Marie, sa mère: Voici, cet enfant est destiné à amener la chute et le relèvement de plusieurs en Israël, et à devenir un signe qui provoquera la contradiction,

³⁴ויברך אותם שמעון ויאמר אל מרים אמו הנה זה מוסד לנפילה ולתקומה לרבים בישראל ולאות מריבה׃

³⁵yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.

³⁵et à toi-même une épée te transpercera l'âme, afin que les pensées de beaucoup de coeurs soient dévoilées.

³⁵וגם בנפשך תחתר חרב למען תגלינה מחשבות לבב רבים׃

³⁶And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,

³⁶Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Aser. Elle était fort avancée en âge, et elle avait vécu sept ans avec son mari depuis sa virginité.

³⁶ותהי שם חנה אשה נביאה בת פנואל משבט אשר והיא באה בימים וחיתה עם בעלה שבע שנים אחרי בתוליה׃

³⁷and she had been a widow even unto fourscore and four years), who departed not from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day.

³⁷Restée veuve, et âgée de quatre vingt-quatre ans, elle ne quittait pas le temple, et elle servait Dieu nuit et jour dans le jeûne et dans la prière.

³⁷והיא אלמנה כארבע ושמנים שנה ולא משה מן המקדש ובצום ובתחנונים עבדה את האלהים לילה ויום׃

³⁸And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks unto God, and spake of him to all them that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

³⁸Etant survenue, elle aussi, à cette même heure, elle louait Dieu, et elle parlait de Jésus à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem.

³⁸ותקם בשעה ההיא ותגש להדות ליהוה ותדבר עליו באזני כל המחכים לגאלה בירושלים׃

³⁹And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

³⁹Lorsqu'ils eurent accompli tout ce qu'ordonnait la loi du Seigneur, Joseph et Marie retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.

³⁹ויכלו את הכל כפי תורת יהוה וישובו הגלילה אל נצרת עירם׃

⁴⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

⁴⁰Or, l'enfant croissait et se fortifiait. Il était rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.

⁴⁰ויגדל הנער ויחזק ברוח וימלא חכמה וחסד אלהים עמו׃

⁴¹And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover.

⁴¹Les parents de Jésus allaient chaque année à Jérusalem, à la fête de Pâque.

⁴¹ועלו הוריו ירושלים שנה בשנה לחג הפסח׃

⁴²And when he was twelve years old, they went up after the custom of the feast;

⁴²Lorsqu'il fut âgé de douze ans, ils y montèrent, selon la coutume de la fête.

⁴²ויהי בהיותו בן שתים עשרה שנה ויעלו ירושלים כמשפט החג׃

⁴³and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not;

⁴³Puis, quand les jours furent écoulés, et qu'ils s'en retournèrent, l'enfant Jésus resta à Jérusalem. Son père et sa mère ne s'en aperçurent pas.

⁴³וימלאו את הימים וישובו ויותר ישוע הנער בירושלים ויוסף ואמו לא ידעו׃

⁴⁴but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day's journey; and they sought for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance:

⁴⁴Croyant qu'il était avec leurs compagnons de voyage, ils firent une journée de chemin, et le cherchèrent parmi leurs parents et leurs connaissances.

⁴⁴ויחשבו כי עם חבל הארחים הוא וילכו כדרך יום ויבקשהו בין הקרובים והמידעים׃

⁴⁵and when they found him not, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking for him.

⁴⁵Mais, ne l'ayant pas trouvé, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher.

⁴⁵ולא מצאהו וישבו ירושלים לבקשו׃

⁴⁶And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions:

⁴⁶Au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et les interrogeant.

⁴⁶ויהי אחרי שלשת ימים וימצאהו במקדש ישב בתוך המורים שמע אליהם ושאל אתם׃

⁴⁷and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

⁴⁷Tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient frappés de son intelligence et de ses réponses.

⁴⁷וכל השמעים אליו השתוממו על שכלו ועל תשובתיו׃

⁴⁸And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I sought thee sorrowing.

⁴⁸Quand ses parents le virent, ils furent saisis d'étonnement, et sa mère lui dit: Mon enfant, pourquoi as-tu agi de la sorte avec nous? Voici, ton père et moi, nous te cherchions avec angoisse.

⁴⁸ויהי כראותם אתו ויחרדו ותאמר אליו אמו בני מדוע ככה עשית לנו הנה אביך ואנכי בעצבת לב בקשנוך׃

⁴⁹And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father's house?

⁴⁹Il leur dit: Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'il faut que je m'occupe des affaires de mon Père?

⁴⁹ויאמר אליהם למה זה בקשתם אתי הלא ידעתם כי עלי להיות באשר לאבי׃

⁵⁰And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

⁵⁰Mais ils ne comprirent pas ce qu'il leur disait.

⁵⁰והם לא הבינו את הדבר אשר דבר אליהם׃

⁵¹And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them: and his mother kept all [these] sayings in her heart.

⁵¹Puis il descendit avec eux pour aller à Nazareth, et il leur était soumis. Sa mère gardait toutes ces choses dans son coeur.

⁵¹וירד אתם ויבא אל נצרת ויכנע להם ואמו שמרה בלבה את כל הדברים האלה׃

⁵²And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

⁵²Et Jésus croissait en sagesse, en stature, et en grâce, devant Dieu et devant les hommes.

⁵²וישוע הלך וגדל בחכמה ומקומה ובחן עם אלהים ועם אנשים׃
