¹Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

²in the highpriesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

²et du temps des souverains sacrificateurs Anne et Caïphe, -la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Jean, fils de Zacharie, dans le désert.

²בימי הכהנים הגדולים חנן וקיפא היה דבר אלהים אל יוחנן בן זכריה במדבר׃

³And he came into all the region round about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins;

³Et il alla dans tout le pays des environs du Jourdain, prêchant le baptême de repentance, pour la rémission des péchés,

³ויבא אל כל ככר הירדן ויקרא טבילת התשובה לסליחת החטאים׃

⁴as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

⁴selon ce qui est écrit dans le livre des paroles d'Esaïe, le prophète: C'est la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, Aplanissez ses sentiers.

⁴ככתוב בספר דברי ישעיהו הנביא קול קורא במדבר פנו דרך יהוה ישרו מסלותיו׃

⁵Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall become straight, And the rough ways smooth;

⁵Toute vallée sera comblée, Toute montagne et toute colline seront abaissées; Ce qui est tortueux sera redressé, Et les chemins raboteux seront aplanis.

⁵כל גיא ינשא וכל הר וגבעה ישפלו והיה העקב למישור והרכסים לבקעה׃

⁶And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

⁶Et toute chair verra le salut de Dieu.

⁶וראו כל בשר את ישועת אלהים׃

⁷He said therefore to the multitudes that went out to be baptized of him, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷Il disait donc à ceux qui venaient en foule pour être baptisés par lui: Races de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir?

⁷ויאמר אל המון העם היצאים להטבל על ידו אתם ילדי הצפעונים מי הורה אתכם להמלט מפני הקצף הבא׃

⁸Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

⁸Produisez donc des fruits dignes de la repentance, et ne vous mettez pas à dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père! Car je vous déclare que de ces pierres Dieu peut susciter des enfants à Abraham.

⁸לכן עשו פרי הראוי לתשובה ואל תדמו בנפשכם לאמר אברהם הוא אבינו כי אני אמר לכם כי מן האבנים האלה יכל האלהים להקים בנים לאברהם׃

⁹And even now the axe also lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

⁹Déjà même la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres: tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bons fruits sera coupé et jeté au feu.

⁹וכבר הושם הגרזן על שרש העצים והנה כל עץ אשר איננו עשה פרי טוב יגדע והשלך באש׃

¹⁰And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then must we do?

¹⁰La foule l'interrogeait, disant: Que devons-nous donc faire?

¹⁰וישאלהו המון העם לאמר מה אפוא נעשה׃

¹¹And he answered and said unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise.

¹¹Il leur répondit: Que celui qui a deux tuniques partage avec celui qui n'en a point, et que celui qui a de quoi manger agisse de même.

¹¹ויען ויאמר אליהם מי אשר לו כתנות שתים הוא יחלק לאשר אין לו ומי אשר לו מזון ככה יעשה גם הוא׃

¹²And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said unto him, Teacher, what must we do?

¹²Il vint aussi des publicains pour être baptisés, et ils lui dirent: Maître, que devons-nous faire?

¹²ויבאו גם מוכסים להטבל ויאמרו אליו רבי מה נעשה׃

¹³And he said unto them, Extort no more than that which is appointed you.

¹³Il leur répondit: N'exigez rien au delà de ce qui vous a été ordonné.

¹³ויאמר אליהם אל תגבו יותר מחקכם׃

¹⁴And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what must we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse [any one] wrongfully; and be content with your wages.

¹⁴Des soldats aussi lui demandèrent: Et nous, que devons-nous faire? Il leur répondit: Ne commettez ni extorsion ni fraude envers personne, et contentez-vous de votre solde.

¹⁴וישאלהו גם אנשי הצבא לאמר ואנחנו מה נעשה ויאמר אליהם איש אל תזעזעו ואל תלשינו איש ויהי די לכם בשכרכם׃

¹⁵And as the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether haply he were the Christ;

¹⁵Comme le peuple était dans l'attente, et que tous se demandaient en eux-mêmes si Jean n'était pas le Christ,

¹⁵ויהי כאשר חכה העם וכלם חשבים בלבם לאמר אולי יוחנן הוא המשיח׃

¹⁶John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and [in] fire:

¹⁶il leur dit à tous: Moi, je vous baptise d'eau; mais il vient, celui qui est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de délier la courroie de ses souliers. Lui, il vous baptisera du Saint-Esprit et de feu.

¹⁶ויען יוחנן ויאמר לכלם הן אני טובל אתכם במים אבל בוא יבוא החזק ממני אשר אינני כדי להתיר את שרוך נעליו הוא יטבל אתכם ברוח הקדש ובאש׃

¹⁷whose fan is in his hand, thoroughly to cleanse his threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

¹⁷Il a son van à la main; il nettoiera son aire, et il amassera le blé dans son grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s'éteint point.

¹⁷אשר המזרה בידו להבר את גרנו ויאסף את דגנו אל אוצרו ואת המץ ישרפנו באש אשר לא תכבה׃

¹⁸With many other exhortations therefore preached he good tidings unto the people;

¹⁸C'est ainsi que Jean annonçait la bonne nouvelle au peuple, en lui adressant encore beaucoup d'autres exhortations.

¹⁸וכן עוד דברים אחרים הרבה בשר וגם הזהיר את העם׃

¹⁹but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,

¹⁹Mais Hérode le tétrarque, étant repris par Jean au sujet d'Hérodias, femme de son frère, et pour toutes les mauvaises actions qu'il avait commises,

¹⁹והורדוס שר רבע המדינה אשר הוכח על ידו על אדות הורודיה אשת אחיו פילפוס ועל אדות כל הרע אשר עשה הורדוס׃

²⁰added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

²⁰ajouta encore à toutes les autres celle d'enfermer Jean dans la prison.

²⁰הוסיף על כל אלה גם את זאת ויסגר את יוחנן במשמר׃

²¹Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

²¹Tout le peuple se faisant baptiser, Jésus fut aussi baptisé; et, pendant qu'il priait, le ciel s'ouvrit,

²¹ויהי בהטבל כל העם וגם ישוע נטבל ומתפלל ויפתחו השמים׃

²²and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

²²et le Saint-Esprit descendit sur lui sous une forme corporelle, comme une colombe. Et une voix fit entendre du ciel ces paroles: Tu es mon Fils bien-aimé; en toi j'ai mis toute mon affection.

²²וירד עליו רוח הקדש בדמות גוף כיונה ויהי קול מן השמים ויאמר אתה בני ידידי בך רצתה נפשי׃

²³And Jesus himself, when he began [to teach], was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the [son] of Heli,

²³Jésus avait environ trente ans lorsqu'il commença son ministère, étant, comme on le croyait, fils de Joseph, fils d'Héli,

²³והוא ישוע בהחלו היה כבן שלשים שנה ויחשבהו לבן יוסף בן עלי׃

²⁴the [son] of Matthat, the [son] of Levi, the [son] of Melchi, the [son] of Jannai, the [son] of Joseph,

²⁴fils de Matthat, fils de Lévi, fils de Melchi, fils de Jannaï, fils de Joseph,

²⁴בן מתת בן לוי בן מלכי בן יני בן יוסף׃

²⁵the [son] of Mattathias, the [son] of Amos, the [son] of Nahum, the [son] of Esli, the [son] of Naggai,

²⁵fils de Mattathias, fils d'Amos, fils de Nahum, fils d'Esli, fils de Naggaï,

²⁵בן מתתיה בן אמוץ בן נחום בן חסלי בן נגי׃

²⁶the [son] of Maath, the [son] of Mattathias, the [son] of Semein, the [son] of Josech, the [son] of Joda,

²⁶fils de Maath, fils de Mattathias, fils de Sémeï, fils de Josech, fils de Joda,

²⁶בן מחת בן מתתיה בן שמעי בן יוסף בן יודה׃

²⁷the [son] of Joanan, the [son] of Rhesa, the [son] of Zerubbabel, the [son] of Shealtiel, the [son] of Neri,

²⁷fils de Joanan, fils de Rhésa, fils de Zorobabel, fils de Salathiel, fils de Néri,

²⁷בן יוחנן בן רישא בן זרבלל בן שאלתיאל בן גרי׃

²⁸the [son] of Melchi, the [son] of Addi, the [son] of Cosam, the [son] of Elmadam, the [son] of Er,

²⁸fils de Melchi, fils d'Addi, fils de Kosam, fils d'Elmadam, fils D'Er,

²⁸בן מלכי בן אדי בן קוסם בן אלמדם בן ער׃

²⁹the [son] of Jesus, the [son] of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the [son] of Matthat, the [son] of Levi,

²⁹fils de Jésus, fils d'Eliézer, fils de Jorim, fils de Matthat, fils de Lévi,

²⁹בן יוסי בן אליעזר בן יורים בן מתת בן לוי׃

³⁰the [son] of Symeon, the [son] of Judas, the [son] of Joseph, the [son] of Jonam, the [son] of Eliakim,

³⁰fils de Siméon, fils de Juda, fils de Joseph, fils de Jonam, fils d'Eliakim,

³¹the [son] of Melea, the [son] of Menna, the [son] of Mattatha, the [son] of Nathan, the [son] of David,

³²the [son] of Jesse, the [son] of Obed, the [son] of Boaz, the [son] of Salmon, the [son] of Nahshon,

³⁴the [son] of Jacob, the [son] of Isaac, the [son] of Abraham, the [son] of Terah, the [son] of Nahor,

³⁴fils de Jacob, fils d'Isaac, fils d'Abraham, fils de Thara, fils de Nachor,

³⁴בן יעקב בן יצחק בן אברהם בן תרח בן נחור׃

³⁵the [son] of Serug, the [son] of Reu, the [son] of Peleg, the [son] of Eber, the [son] of Shelah

³⁵fils de Seruch, fils de Ragau, fils de Phalek, fils d'Eber, fils de Sala,

³⁵בן שרוג בן רעו בן פלג בן עבר בן שלח׃

³⁶the [son] of Cainan, the [son] of Arphaxad, the [son] of Shem, the [son] of Noah, the [son] of Lamech,

³⁶fils de Kaïnam, fils d'Arphaxad, fils de Sem, fils de Noé, fils de Lamech,

³⁶בן קינן בן ארפכשד בן שם בן נח בן למך׃

³⁷the [son] of Methuselah, the [son] of Enoch, the [son] of Jared, the [son] of Mahalaleel, the [son] of Cainan,

³⁷fils de Mathusala, fils d'Enoch, fils de Jared, fils de Maléléel, fils de Kaïnan,

³⁷בן מתושלח בן חנוך בן ירד בן מהללאל בן קינן׃

³⁸the [son] of Enos, the [son] of Seth, the [son] of Adam, the [son] of God.
