¹In the mean time, when the many thousands of the multitude were gathered together, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

¹Sur ces entrefaites, les gens s'étant rassemblés par milliers, au point de se fouler les uns les autres, Jésus se mit à dire à ses disciples: Avant tout, gardez-vous du levain des pharisiens, qui est l'hypocrisie.

¹ויהי עד כה ועד כה בהתאסף רבבות עם עד כי לחצו איש את רעהו ויחל לדבר אל תלמידיו בראשונה השמרו לנפשתיכם משאור הפרושים שהוא החנפה׃

²But there is nothing covered up, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

²Il n'y a rien de caché qui ne doive être découvert, ni de secret qui ne doive être connu.

²ואין דבר מכסה אשר לא יגלה ואין נעלם אשר לא יודע׃

³Wherefore whatsoever ye have said in the darkness shall be heard in the light; and what ye have spoken in the ear in the inner chambers shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

³C'est pourquoi tout ce que vous aurez dit dans les ténèbres sera entendu dans la lumière, et ce que vous aurez dit à l'oreille dans les chambres sera prêché sur les toits.

³לכן כל אשר דברתם בחשך באור ישמע ואת אשר לחשתם לאזן בחדרים קרא יקרא על הגגות׃

⁴And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

⁴Je vous dis, à vous qui êtes mes amis: Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps et qui, après cela, ne peuvent rien faire de plus.

⁴ואני אמר לכם ידידי אל תיראו מן הממיתים את הגוף ואחרי זאת אין לאל ידם לעשות עוד דבר׃

⁵But I will warn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, who after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

⁵Je vous montrerai qui vous devez craindre. Craignez celui qui, après avoir tué, a le pouvoir de jeter dans la géhenne; oui, je vous le dis, c'est lui que vous devez craindre.

⁵אבל אורה אתכם את אשר תיראו יראו את אשר יש לו שלטן אחרי המיתו להשליך אל גיהנם הן אני אמר לכם אותו תיראון׃

⁶Are not five sparrows sold for two pence? and not one of them is forgotten in the sight of God.

⁶Ne vend-on pas cinq passereaux pour deux sous? Cependant, aucun d'eux n'est oublié devant Dieu.

⁶הלא חמש צפרים תמכרנה בשני אסרים ואין אחת מהן נשכחת לפני האלהים׃

⁷But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

⁷Et même les cheveux de votre tête sont tous comptés. Ne craignez donc point: vous valez plus que beaucoup de passereaux.

⁷ואתם גם שערות ראשכם נמנות כלן לכן אל תיראו יקרתם מצפרים רבות׃

⁸And I say unto you, Every one who shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

⁸Je vous le dis, quiconque me confessera devant les hommes, le Fils de l'homme le confessera aussi devant les anges de Dieu;

⁸ואני אמר לכם כל אשר יודה בי לפני האדם גם בן האדם יודה בו לפני מלאכי אלהים׃

⁹but he that denieth me in the presence of men shall be denied in the presence of the angels of God.

⁹mais celui qui me reniera devant les hommes sera renié devant les anges de Dieu.

⁹ואשר יכחש בי לפני האדם הוא יכחש לפני מלאכי אלהים׃

¹⁰And every one who shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven.

¹⁰Et quiconque parlera contre le Fils de l'homme, il lui sera pardonné; mais à celui qui blasphémera contre le Saint-Esprit il ne sera point pardonné.

¹⁰וכל אשר ידבר דבר חרפה על בן האדם יסלח לו והמגדף את רוח הקדש לא יסלח לו׃

¹¹And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, be not anxious how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

¹¹Quand on vous mènera devant les synagogues, les magistrats et les autorités, ne vous inquiétez pas de la manière dont vous vous défendrez ni de ce que vous direz;

¹¹וכאשר יביאו אתכם אל בתי הכנסיות ולפני הרשיות והשלטונים אל תדאגו איך או במה תצטדקו ומה תדברו׃

¹²for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in that very hour what ye ought to say.

¹²car le Saint-Esprit vous enseignera à l'heure même ce qu'il faudra dire.

¹²כי רוח הקדש הוא יורה אתכם בשעה ההיא את הנכון לדבר׃

¹³And one out of the multitude said unto him, Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.

¹³Quelqu'un dit à Jésus, du milieu de la foule: Maître, dis à mon frère de partager avec moi notre héritage.

¹³ויאמר אליו אחד מן העם רבי אמר נא אל אחי ויחלק אתי את הירשה׃

¹⁴But he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

¹⁴Jésus lui répondit: O homme, qui m'a établi pour être votre juge, ou pour faire vos partages?

¹⁴ויאמר אליו בן אדם מי שמני עליכם לשפט ולמחלק׃

¹⁵And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

¹⁵Puis il leur dit: Gardez-vous avec soin de toute avarice; car la vie d'un homme ne dépend pas de ses biens, fût-il dans l'abondance.

¹⁵ויאמר אליהם ראו והשמרו לכם מבצע בצע כי חיי האדם אינם תלוים בהרבות נכסיו׃

¹⁶And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

¹⁶Et il leur dit cette parabole: Les terres d'un homme riche avaient beaucoup rapporté.

¹⁶וישא משלו ויאמר אליהם לאמר שדה איש עשיר אחד עשה תבואה הרבה׃

¹⁷and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits?

¹⁷Et il raisonnait en lui-même, disant: Que ferai-je? car je n'ai pas de place pour serrer ma récolte.

¹⁷ויחשב בלבו לאמר מה אעשה כי אין לי מקום לכנוס בו את תבואתי׃

¹⁸And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods.

¹⁸Voici, dit-il, ce que je ferai: j'abattrai mes greniers, j'en bâtirai de plus grands, j'y amasserai toute ma récolte et tous mes biens;

¹⁸ויאמר את זאת אעשה הרס את אסמי ובנה גדולים מהם ואכנסה שמה את כל יבולי וטובי׃

¹⁹And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

¹⁹et je dirai à mon âme: Mon âme, tu as beaucoup de biens en réserve pour plusieurs années; repose-toi, mange, bois, et réjouis-toi.

¹⁹ואמר לנפשי נפשי יש לך עתודות הרבה לשנים רבות הנפשי אכלי שתי ושישי׃

²⁰But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

²⁰Mais Dieu lui dit: Insensé! cette nuit même ton âme te sera redemandée; et ce que tu as préparé, pour qui cela sera-t-il?

²⁰והאלהים אמר לו אתה הכסיל בעצם הלילה הזה ידרשו ממך את נפשך ואשר הכינות לך למי יהיה׃

²¹So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²¹Il en est ainsi de celui qui amasse des trésors pour lui-même, et qui n'est pas riche pour Dieu.

²¹זה חלק האצר לו אצרות ולא יעשיר באלהים׃

²²And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for [your] life, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.

²²Jésus dit ensuite à ses disciples: C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Ne vous inquiétez pas pour votre vie de ce que vous mangerez, ni pour votre corps de quoi vous serez vêtus.

²²ויאמר אל תלמידיו לכן אני אמר לכם אל תדאגו לנפשכם מה תאכלו ולגופכם מה תלבשו׃

²³For the life is more than the food, and the body than the raiment.

²³La vie est plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement.

²³הנפש יקרה היא מן המזון והגוף יקר מן המלבוש׃

²⁴Consider the ravens, that they sow not, neither reap; which have no store-chamber nor barn; and God feedeth them: of how much more value are ye than the birds!

²⁴Considérez les corbeaux: ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, ils n'ont ni cellier ni grenier; et Dieu les nourrit. Combien ne valez-vous pas plus que les oiseaux!

²⁴התבוננו אל הערבים אשר אינם זרעים ואינם קצרים וגם אין להם מגורה ואוצר והאלהים מכלכל אותם ומה מעלים אתם מן העוף׃

²⁵And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit unto the measure of his life?

²⁵Qui de vous, par ses inquiétudes, peut ajouter une coudée à la durée de sa vie?

²⁵ומי זה מכם אשר בדאגתו יוכל להוסיף אמה אחת על קומתו׃

²⁶If then ye are not able to do even that which is least, why are ye anxious concerning the rest?

²⁶Si donc vous ne pouvez pas même la moindre chose, pourquoi vous inquiétez-vous du reste?

²⁶ועתה הן מעט מזער אין ביכלתכם וליותר מה תדאגו׃

²⁷Consider the lilies, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

²⁷Considérez comment croissent les lis: ils ne travaillent ni ne filent; cependant je vous dis que Salomon même, dans toute sa gloire, n'a pas été vêtu comme l'un d'eux.

²⁷התבוננו אל השושנים הצמחות ואינן טות ואינן ארגות ואני אמר לכם כי גם שלמה בכל הדרו לא היה לבוש כאחת מהנה׃

²⁸But if God doth so clothe the grass in the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more [shall he clothe] you, O ye of little faith?

²⁸Si Dieu revêt ainsi l'herbe qui est aujourd'hui dans les champs et qui demain sera jetée au four, à combien plus forte raison ne vous vêtira-t-il pas, gens de peu de foi?

²⁸ואם ככה ילביש אלהים את חציר השדה אשר היום ישנו ומחר ישלך לתוך התנור אף כי אתכם קטני האמונה׃

²⁹And seek not ye what ye shall eat, and what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

²⁹Et vous, ne cherchez pas ce que vous mangerez et ce que vous boirez, et ne soyez pas inquiets.

²⁹גם אתם אל תדרשו מה תאכלו ומה תשתו ואל תהלכו בגדלות׃

³⁰For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: but your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

³⁰Car toutes ces choses, ce sont les païens du monde qui les recherchent. Votre Père sait que vous en avez besoin.

³⁰כי את כל אלה מבקשים גויי הארץ ואביכם הוא יודע כי צריכים אתם לאלה׃

³¹Yet seek ye his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you.

³¹Cherchez plutôt le royaume de Dieu; et toutes ces choses vous seront données par-dessus.

³¹אך בקשו את מלכות האלהים ונוסף לכם כל אלה׃

³²Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

³²Ne crains point, petit troupeau; car votre Père a trouvé bon de vous donner le royaume.

³²אל תירא העדר הקטן כי רצה אביכם לתת לכם את המלכות׃

³³Sell that which ye have, and give alms; make for yourselves purses which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief draweth near, neither moth destroyeth.

³³Vendez ce que vous possédez, et donnez-le en aumônes. Faites-vous des bourses qui ne s'usent point, un trésor inépuisable dans les cieux, où le voleur n'approche point, et où la teigne ne détruit point.

³³מכרו את רכושכם ותנו צדקה עשו לכם כיסים אשר לא יבלו ואוצר בשמים אשר לא יגרע לעולם אשר גנב לא יקרב אליו וסס לא יאכלהו׃

³⁴For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

³⁴Car là où est votre trésor, là aussi sera votre coeur.

³⁴כי במקום אשר אוצרכם בו שם יהיה גם לבבכם׃

³⁵Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning;

³⁵Que vos reins soient ceints, et vos lampes allumées.

³⁵מתניכם יהיו חגורים והנרות דלקים׃

³⁶and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him.

³⁶Et vous, soyez semblables à des hommes qui attendent que leur maître revienne des noces, afin de lui ouvrir dès qu'il arrivera et frappera.

³⁶ואתם היו דמים לאנשים המחכים לאדניהם מתי ישוב מן החתנה וכאשר יבוא ודפק יפתחו לו כרגע׃

³⁷Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them.

³⁷Heureux ces serviteurs que le maître, à son arrivée, trouvera veillant! Je vous le dis en vérité, il se ceindra, les fera mettre à table, et s'approchera pour les servir.

³⁷אשרי העבדים ההם אשר בבוא האדון ימצאם שקדים אמן אמר אני לכם כי יתאזר ויושיבם וילך לשרת אותם׃

³⁸And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find [them] so blessed are those [servants].

³⁸Qu'il arrive à la deuxième ou à la troisième veille, heureux ces serviteurs, s'il les trouve veillant!

³⁸ואם יבוא באשמרה השנית או באשמרה השלישית וכן ימצא אשרי העבדים ההם׃

³⁹But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.

³⁹Sachez-le bien, si le maître de la maison savait à quelle heure le voleur doit venir, il veillerait et ne laisserait pas percer sa maison.

³⁹וזאת דעו אשר אם ידע ידע בעל הבית באי זו שעה יבוא הגנב כי עתה שקד שקוד ולא יתן לחתר את ביתו׃

⁴⁰Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

⁴⁰Vous aussi, tenez-vous prêts, car le Fils de l'homme viendra à l'heure où vous n'y penserez pas.

⁴⁰לכן גם אתם היו נכונים כי בשעה אשר לא פללתם יבוא בן האדם׃

⁴¹And Peter said, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even unto all?

⁴¹Pierre lui dit: Seigneur, est-ce à nous, ou à tous, que tu adresses cette parabole?

⁴¹ויאמר פטרוס אדנינו הלנו אתה אמר את המשל הזה אם גם לכל אדם׃

⁴²And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

⁴²Et le Seigneur dit: Quel est donc l'économe fidèle et prudent que le maître établira sur ses gens, pour leur donner la nourriture au temps convenable?

⁴²ויאמר האדון מי הוא אפוא הסכן הנאמן והנבון אשר יפקידהו האדון על עבדתו לתת את ארחתם בעתו׃

⁴³Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

⁴³Heureux ce serviteur, que son maître, à son arrivée, trouvera faisant ainsi!

⁴³אשרי העבד ההוא אשר בבא אדניו ימצאהו עשה כן׃

⁴⁴Of a truth I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.

⁴⁴Je vous le dis en vérité, il l'établira sur tous ses biens.

⁴⁴אמת אמר אני לכם כי על כל אשר יש לו יפקידהו׃

⁴⁵But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

⁴⁵Mais, si ce serviteur dit en lui-même: Mon maître tarde à venir; s'il se met à battre les serviteurs et les servantes, à manger, à boire et à s'enivrer,

⁴⁵והעבד ההוא אם יאמר בלבו בשש אדני לבוא והחל להכות את העבדים ואת השפחות ולאכל ולשתות ולשכר׃

⁴⁶the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.

⁴⁶le maître de ce serviteur viendra le jour où il ne s'y attend pas et à l'heure qu'il ne connaît pas, il le mettra en pièces, et lui donnera sa part avec les infidèles.

⁴⁶בוא יבוא אדני העבד ההוא ביום לא יצפה ובשעה לא ידע וישסף אותו וישים את חלקו עם הסוררים׃

⁴⁷And that servant, who knew his lord's will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten with many [stripes];

⁴⁷Le serviteur qui, ayant connu la volonté de son maître, n'a rien préparé et n'a pas agi selon sa volonté, sera battu d'un grand nombre de coups.

⁴⁷]84-74[ והעבד ההוא אשר ידע את רצון אדניו ולא הכין ולא עשה כרצונו יכה מכות רבות, ואשר לא ידע ועשה דברים אשר עליהם בן הכות הוא לא יכה כי אם מעט כי כל איש אשר נתן לו הרבה דרוש ידרש ממנו הרבה ואשר הפקידו בידו הרבה ישאלו מאתו יותר׃

⁴⁸but he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few [stripes]. And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required: and to whom they commit much, of him will they ask the more.

⁴⁸Mais celui qui, ne l'ayant pas connue, a fait des choses dignes de châtiment, sera battu de peu de coups. On demandera beaucoup à qui l'on a beaucoup donné, et on exigera davantage de celui à qui l'on a beaucoup confié.

⁴⁹I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what do I desire, if it is already kindled?

⁴⁹Je suis venu jeter un feu sur la terre, et qu'ai-je à désirer, s'il est déjà allumé?

⁴⁹להפיל אש על הארץ באתי ומה חפץ אני כי כבר בערה׃

⁵⁰But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

⁵⁰Il est un baptême dont je dois être baptisé, et combien il me tarde qu'il soit accompli!

⁵⁰ועלי טבילה להטבל ומה יצר לי עד כי תשלם׃

⁵¹Think ye that I am come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

⁵¹Pensez-vous que je sois venu apporter la paix sur la terre? Non, vous dis-je, mais la division.

⁵¹החשבים אתם כי באתי לתת שלום בארץ אני אמר לכם לא כי אם מחלקת׃

⁵²for there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

⁵²Car désormais cinq dans une maison seront divisés, trois contre deux, et deux contre trois;

⁵²כי מעתה חמשה בבית אחד יחלקו שלשה על שנים ושנים על שלשה׃

⁵³They shall be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother in law against her daughter in law, and daughter in law against her mother in law.

⁵³le père contre le fils et le fils contre le père, la mère contre la fille et la fille contre la mère, la belle-mère contre la belle-fille et la belle-fille contre la belle-mère.

⁵³האב יחלק על הבן והבן על האב האם על הבת והבת על האם החמות על הכלה והכלה על החמות׃

⁵⁴And he said to the multitudes also, When ye see a cloud rising in the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it cometh to pass.

⁵⁴Il dit encore aux foules: Quand vous voyez un nuage se lever à l'occident, vous dites aussitôt: La pluie vient. Et il arrive ainsi.

⁵⁴ויאמר גם אל המון העם כראתכם את הענן עלה במערב ואמרתם גשם בא וכן יהיה׃

⁵⁵And when [ye see] a south wind blowing, ye say, There will be a scorching heat; and it cometh to pass.

⁵⁵Et quand vous voyez souffler le vent du midi, vous dites: Il fera chaud. Et cela arrive.

⁵⁵ואם נשבה רוח הנגב תאמרו הנה חם בא וגם יבוא׃

⁵⁶Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven; but how is it that ye know not how to interpret this time?

⁵⁶Hypocrites! vous savez discerner l'aspect de la terre et du ciel; comment ne discernez-vous pas ce temps-ci?

⁵⁶החנפים את פני הארץ והשמים ידעתם לבחן ואת העת הזאת איך לא תבחנו׃

⁵⁷And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

⁵⁷Et pourquoi ne discernez-vous pas de vous-mêmes ce qui est juste?

⁵⁷למה אף מנפשכם לא תשפטו את הישר׃

⁵⁸For as thou art going with thine adversary before the magistrate, on the way give diligence to be quit of him; lest haply he drag thee unto the judge, and the judge shall deliver thee to the officer, and the officer shall cast thee into prison.

⁵⁸Lorsque tu vas avec ton adversaire devant le magistrat, tâche en chemin de te dégager de lui, de peur qu'il ne te traîne devant le juge, que le juge ne te livre à l'officier de justice, et que celui-ci ne te mette en prison.

⁵⁸כי כאשר תלך אל השר עם איש ריבך בעודך בדרך השתדל להנצל ממנו פן יסחב אותך אל השפט והשפט ימסרך אל השוטר והשוטר ישליכך אל בית הכלא׃

⁵⁹I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the very last mite.

⁵⁹Je te le dis, tu ne sortiras pas de là que tu n'aies payé jusqu'à la dernière pite.

⁵⁹ואני אמר לך לא תצא משם עד אם שלמת גם את הפרוטה האחרונה׃
