¹And he went out from thence; and he cometh into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

¹Jésus partit de là, et se rendit dans sa patrie. Ses disciples le suivirent.

¹ויצא משם ויבא אל ארצו וילכו אחריו תלמידיו׃

²And when the sabbath was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, Whence hath this man these things? and, What is the wisdom that is given unto this man, and [what mean] such mighty works wrought by his hands?

²Quand le sabbat fut venu, il se mit à enseigner dans la synagogue. Beaucoup de gens qui l'entendirent étaient étonnés et disaient: D'où lui viennent ces choses? Quelle est cette sagesse qui lui a été donnée, et comment de tels miracles se font-ils par ses mains?

²וביום השבת החל ללמד בבית הכנסת וישמעו רבים וישתוממו לאמר מאין לזה כאלה ומה היא החכמה הנתונה לו עד אשר נעשו גבורות כאלה על ידיו׃

³Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended in him.

³N'est-ce pas le charpentier, le fils de Marie, le frère de Jacques, de Joses, de Jude et de Simon? et ses soeurs ne sont-elles pas ici parmi nous? Et il était pour eux une occasion de chute.

³הלא זה הוא החרש בן מרים ואחי יעקב ויוסי ויהודה ושמעון והלא אחיותיו אתנו פה ויהי להם למכשול׃

⁴And Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

⁴Mais Jésus leur dit: Un prophète n'est méprisé que dans sa patrie, parmi ses parents, et dans sa maison.

⁴ויאמר אליהם ישוע אין הנביא נקלה כי אם בארצו ובין קרוביו ובביתו׃

⁵And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

⁵Il ne put faire là aucun miracle, si ce n'est qu'il imposa les mains à quelques malades et les guérit.

⁵ולא יכל לעשות שם פלא רק על חלשים מעטים שם את ידיו וירפאם׃

⁶And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages teaching.

⁶Et il s'étonnait de leur incrédulité. Jésus parcourait les villages d'alentour, en enseignant.

⁶ויתמה על חסרון אמונתם ויסב בכפרים סבוב ולמד׃

⁷And he calleth unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits;

⁷Alors il appela les douze, et il commença à les envoyer deux à deux, en leur donnant pouvoir sur les esprits impurs.

⁷ויקרא אל שנים העשר ויחל לשלח אותם שנים שנים ויתן להם שלטן על רוחות הטמאה׃

⁸and he charged them that they should take nothing for [their] journey, save a staff only; no bread, no wallet, now money in their purse;

⁸Il leur prescrivit de ne rien prendre pour le voyage, si ce n'est un bâton; de n'avoir ni pain, ni sac, ni monnaie dans la ceinture;

⁸ויצו אותם אשר לא ישאו מאומה לדרך זולתי מקל לבדו לא תרמיל ולא לחם ולא נחשת בחגורה׃

⁹but [to go] shod with sandals: and, [said he], put not on two coats.

⁹de chausser des sandales, et de ne pas revêtir deux tuniques.

⁹רק להיות נעולי סנדל ושתי כתנות לא ילבשו׃

¹⁰And he said unto them, Wheresoever ye enter into a house, there abide till ye depart thence.

¹⁰Puis il leur dit: Dans quelque maison que vous entriez, restez-y jusqu'à ce que vous partiez de ce lieu.

¹⁰ויאמר אליהם במקום אשר תבאו בית איש שבו בו עד כי תצאו משם׃

¹¹And whatsoever place shall not receive you, and they hear you not, as ye go forth thence, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony unto them.

¹¹Et, s'il y a quelque part des gens qui ne vous reçoivent ni ne vous écoutent, retirez-vous de là, et secouez la poussière de vos pieds, afin que cela leur serve de témoignage.

¹¹וכל אשר לא יקבלו אתכם ולא ישמעו אליכם צאו משם ונערו את עפר כפות רגליכם לעדות להם אמן אני אמר לכם לסדם ולעמרה יקל ביום הדין מן העיר ההיא׃

¹²And they went out, and preached that [men] should repent.

¹²Ils partirent, et ils prêchèrent la repentance.

¹²ויצאו ויקראו לשוב בתשובה׃

¹³And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

¹³Ils chassaient beaucoup de démons, et ils oignaient d'huile beaucoup de malades et les guérissaient.

¹³ויגרשו שדים רבים ויסוכו בשמן חלשים רבים וירפאום׃

¹⁴And king Herod heard [thereof]; for his name had become known: and he said, John the Baptizer is risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him.

¹⁴Le roi Hérode entendit parler de Jésus, dont le nom était devenu célèbre, et il dit: Jean Baptiste est ressuscité des morts, et c'est pour cela qu'il se fait par lui des miracles.

¹⁴וישמע עליו המלך הורדוס כי נודע שמו ויאמר יוחנן הטובל קם מן המתים ועל כן פעלות בו הגבורות׃

¹⁵But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, [It is] a prophet, [even] as one of the prophets.

¹⁵D'autres disaient: C'est Elie. Et d'autres disaient: C'est un prophète comme l'un des prophètes.

¹⁵ואחרים אמרו כי הוא אליהו ואחרים אמרו כי נביא הוא או כאחד הנביאים׃

¹⁶But Herod, when he heard [thereof], said, John, whom I beheaded, he is risen.

¹⁶Mais Hérode, en apprenant cela, disait: Ce Jean que j'ai fait décapiter, c'est lui qui est ressuscité.

¹⁶וישמע הורדוס ויאמר יוחנן אשר אנכי נשאתי את ראשו מעליו הוא קם מן המתים׃

¹⁷For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.

¹⁷Car Hérode lui-même avait fait arrêter Jean, et l'avait fait lier en prison, à cause d'Hérodias, femme de Philippe, son frère, parce qu'il l'avait épousée,

¹⁷כי הוא הורודס שלח לתפש את יוחנן ויאסרהו בבית הסהר בגלל הורודיה אשת פילפוס אחיו כי אתה לקח לו לאשה׃

¹⁸For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

¹⁸et que Jean lui disait: Il ne t'est pas permis d'avoir la femme de ton frère.

¹⁸יען אשר אמר יוחנן אל הורדוס אשת אחיך איננה מתרת לך׃

¹⁹And Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him; and she could not;

¹⁹Hérodias était irritée contre Jean, et voulait le faire mourir. Mais elle ne le pouvait;

¹⁹ותשטם אותו הורודיה ותבקש המיתו ולא יכלה׃

²⁰for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was much perplexed; and he heard him gladly.

²⁰car Hérode craignait Jean, le connaissant pour un homme juste et saint; il le protégeait, et, après l'avoir entendu, il était souvent perplexe, et l'écoutait avec plaisir.

²⁰כי הורדוס ירא את יוחנן בדעתו כי הוא איש צדיק וקדוש ויגן בעדו והרבה עשה בשמעו אליו ויאהב לשמע אתו׃

²¹And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

²¹Cependant, un jour propice arriva, lorsque Hérode, à l'anniversaire de sa naissance, donna un festin à ses grands, aux chefs militaires et aux principaux de la Galilée.

²¹ויבא היום המכשר כי הורדוס ביום הלדת אתו עשה משתה לגדוליו ולשרי האלפים ולראשי הגליל׃

²²and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and them that sat at meat with him; and the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²²La fille d'Hérodias entra dans la salle; elle dansa, et plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille: Demande-moi ce que tu voudras, et je te le donnerai.

²²ותבא בת הורודיה ותרקד ותיטב בעיני הורדוס ובעיני המסבים עמו ויאמר המלך אל הנערה שאלי ממני את אשר תחפצי ואתן לך׃

²³And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

²³Il ajouta avec serment: Ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, fût-ce la moitié de mon royaume.

²³וישבע לה לאמר כל אשר תשאלי ממני אתן לך עד חצי מלכותי׃

²⁴And she went out, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer.

²⁴Etant sortie, elle dit à sa mère: Que demanderai-je? Et sa mère répondit: La tête de Jean Baptiste.

²⁴ותצא ותאמר לאמה מה אשאל ותאמר את ראש יוחנן המטביל׃

²⁵And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

²⁵Elle s'empressa de rentrer aussitôt vers le roi, et lui fit cette demande: Je veux que tu me donnes à l'instant, sur un plat, la tête de Jean Baptiste.

²⁵ותמהר מאד לבוא אל המלך ותשאל לאמר רצוני אשר תתן לי עתה בקערה את ראש יוחנן המטביל׃

²⁶And the king was exceeding sorry; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat, he would not reject her.

²⁶Le roi fut attristé; mais, à cause de ses serments et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui faire un refus.

²⁶ויתעצב המלך מאד אך בעבור השבועה והמסבים עמו לא רצה להשיב פניה׃

²⁷And straightway the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring his head: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁷Il envoya sur-le-champ un garde, avec ordre d'apporter la tête de Jean Baptiste. Le garde alla décapiter Jean dans la prison,

²⁷ומיד שלח המלך אחד הטבחים ויצוהו להביא את ראשו׃

²⁸and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother.

²⁸et apporta la tête sur un plat. Il la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère.

²⁸וילך ויכרת את ראשו בבית הסהר ויביאהו בקערה ויתנהו לנערה והנערה נתנה אתו אל אמה׃

²⁹And when his disciples heard [thereof], they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

²⁹Les disciples de Jean, ayant appris cela, vinrent prendre son corps, et le mirent dans un sépulcre.

²⁹וישמעו תלמידיו ויבאו וישאו את גויתו וישימוה בקבר׃

³⁰And the apostles gather themselves together unto Jesus; and they told him all things, whatsoever they had done, and whatsoever they had taught.

³⁰Les apôtres, s'étant rassemblés auprès de Jésus, lui racontèrent tout ce qu'ils avaient fait et tout ce qu'ils avaient enseigné.

³⁰ויקהלו השליחים אל ישוע ויגידו לו את כל אשר עשו ואת אשר למדו׃

³¹And he saith unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while. For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

³¹Jésus leur dit: Venez à l'écart dans un lieu désert, et reposez-vous un peu. Car il y avait beaucoup d'allants et de venants, et ils n'avaient même pas le temps de manger.

³¹ויאמר אליהם באו אתם לבדד אל מקום חרבה ונוחו מעט כי רבים היו הבאים והיצאים עד לאין עת להם לאכול׃

³²And they went away in the boat to a desert place apart.

³²Ils partirent donc dans une barque, pour aller à l'écart dans un lieu désert.

³²וילכו משם באניה אל מקום חרבה לבדד׃

³³And [the people] saw them going, and many knew [them], and they ran together there on foot from all the cities, and outwent them.

³³Beaucoup de gens les virent s'en aller et les reconnurent, et de toutes les villes on accourut à pied et on les devança au lieu où ils se rendaient.

³³וההמון ראה אותם יצאים ויכירהו רבים וירוצו שמה ברגליהם מכל הערים ויעברו אותם ויאספו אליו׃

³⁴And he came forth and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

³⁴Quand il sortit de la barque, Jésus vit une grande foule, et fut ému de compassion pour eux, parce qu'ils étaient comme des brebis qui n'ont point de berger; et il se mit à leur enseigner beaucoup de choses.

³⁴ויצא וירא המון עם רב ויהמו מעיו עליהם כי היו כצאן אשר אין להם רעה ויחל ללמד אותם דברים הרבה׃

³⁵And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, The place is desert, and the day is now far spent;

³⁵Comme l'heure était déjà avancée, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui, et dirent: Ce lieu est désert, et l'heure est déjà avancée;

³⁵ויהי כאשר רפה היום לערוב ויגשו אליו תלמידיו לאמר הנה המקום חרב והיום רד מאד׃

³⁶send them away, that they may go into the country and villages round about, and buy themselves somewhat to eat.

³⁶renvoie-les, afin qu'ils aillent dans les campagnes et dans les villages des environs, pour s'acheter de quoi manger.

³⁶שלח אותם וילכו אל החצרים והכפרים מסביב לקנות להם לחם כי אין להם מה לאכל׃

³⁷But he answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred shillings' worth of bread, and give them to eat?

³⁷Jésus leur répondit: Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. Mais ils lui dirent: Irions-nous acheter des pains pour deux cents deniers, et leur donnerions-nous à manger?

³⁷ויען ויאמר אליהם תנו אתם להם לאכלה ויאמרו אליו הנלך לקנות לחם במאתים דינר ונתן להם לאכלה׃

³⁸And he saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go [and] see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

³⁸Et il leur dit: Combien avez-vous de pains? Allez voir. Ils s'en assurèrent, et répondirent: Cinq, et deux poissons.

³⁸ויאמר אליהם כמה ככרות לחם יש לכם לכו וראו וידעו ויאמרו חמש ושני דגים׃

³⁹And he commanded them that all should sit down by companies upon the green grass.

³⁹Alors il leur commanda de les faire tous asseoir par groupes sur l'herbe verte,

³⁹ויצו אותם לשבת כלם חברה חברה לבדה על ירק הדשא׃

⁴⁰And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴⁰et ils s'assirent par rangées de cent et de cinquante.

⁴⁰וישבו להם שורות שורות למאות ולחמשים׃

⁴¹And he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves; and he gave to the disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

⁴¹Il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons et, levant les yeux vers le ciel, il rendit grâces. Puis, il rompit les pains, et les donna aux disciples, afin qu'ils les distribuassent à la foule. Il partagea aussi les deux poissons entre tous.

⁴¹ויקח את חמשת ככרות הלחם ואת שני הדגים וישא עיניו השמימה ויברך ויפרס את הלחם ויתן לתלמידיו לשום לפניהם ואת שני הדגים חלק לכלם׃

⁴²And they all ate, and were filled.

⁴²Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés,

⁴²ויאכלו כלם וישבעו׃

⁴³And they took up broken pieces, twelve basketfuls, and also of the fishes.

⁴³et l'on emporta douze paniers pleins de morceaux de pain et de ce qui restait des poissons.

⁴³וישאו מן הפתותים מלוא סלים שנים עשר וגם מן הדגים׃

⁴⁴And they that ate the loaves were five thousand men.

⁴⁴Ceux qui avaient mangé les pains étaient cinq mille hommes.

⁴⁴והאכלים מן הלחם היו כחמשת אלפי איש׃

⁴⁵And straightway he constrained his disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before [him] unto the other side to Bethsaida, while he himself sendeth the multitude away.

⁴⁵Aussitôt après, il obligea ses disciples à monter dans la barque et à passer avant lui de l'autre côté, vers Bethsaïda, pendant que lui-même renverrait la foule.

⁴⁵ואחרי כן האיץ בתלמידיו לרדת באניה ולעבור לפניו אל עבר הים אל בית צידה עד שלחו את העם׃

⁴⁶And after he had taken leave of them, he departed into the mountain to pray.

⁴⁶Quand il l'eut renvoyée, il s'en alla sur la montagne, pour prier.

⁴⁶ויהי אחר שלחו אתם ויעל ההרה להתפלל׃

⁴⁷And when even was come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

⁴⁷Le soir étant venu, la barque était au milieu de la mer, et Jésus était seul à terre.

⁴⁷ויהי ערב והאניה באה בתוך הים והוא לבדו ביבשה׃

⁴⁸And seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them:

⁴⁸Il vit qu'ils avaient beaucoup de peine à ramer; car le vent leur était contraire. A la quatrième veille de la nuit environ, il alla vers eux, marchant sur la mer, et il voulait les dépasser.

⁴⁸וירא אותם מתעמלים בשוטם כי הרוח לנגדם ויהי כעת האשמרת הרביעית ויבא אליהם מתהלך על פני הים ויואל לעבור לפניהם׃

⁴⁹but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;

⁴⁹Quand ils le virent marcher sur la mer, ils crurent que c'était un fantôme, et ils poussèrent des cris;

⁴⁹והם בראתם אתו מתהלך על פני הים חשבו כי מראה רוח הוא ויצעקו׃

⁵⁰for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he straightway spake with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

⁵⁰car ils le voyaient tous, et ils étaient troublés. Aussitôt Jésus leur parla, et leur dit: Rassurez-vous, c'est moi, n'ayez pas peur!

⁵⁰כי כלם ראוהו ויבהלו אז דבר אתם ויאמר אליהם חזקו כי אני הוא אל תיראו׃

⁵¹And he went up unto them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves;

⁵¹Puis il monta vers eux dans la barque, et le vent cessa. Ils furent en eux-mêmes tout stupéfaits et remplis d'étonnement;

⁵¹וירד אליהם אל האניה והרוח שככה וישתוממו עוד יותר בלבבם ויתמהו׃

⁵²for they understood not concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

⁵²car ils n'avaient pas compris le miracle des pains, parce que leur coeur était endurci.

⁵²כי לא השכילו בדבר ככרות הלחם מפני טמטום לבבם׃

⁵³And when they had crossed over, they came to the land unto Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.

⁵³Après avoir traversé la mer, ils vinrent dans le pays de Génésareth, et ils abordèrent.

⁵³ויעברו את הים ויבאו ארצה גניסר ויקרבו אל היבשה׃

⁵⁴And when they were come out of the boat, straightway [the people] knew him,

⁵⁴Quand ils furent sortis de la barque, les gens, ayant aussitôt reconnu Jésus,

⁵⁴ויהי כצאתם מן האניה אז הכירהו׃

⁵⁵and ran round about that whole region, and began to carry about on their beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

⁵⁵parcoururent tous les environs, et l'on se mit à apporter les malades sur des lits, partout où l'on apprenait qu'il était.

⁵⁵וירוצו בכל סביבותיהם ויחלו לשאת את החולים במשכבות אל כל מקום אשר שמעו כי שם הוא׃

⁵⁶And wheresoever he entered, into villages, or into cities, or into the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

⁵⁶En quelque lieu qu'il arrivât, dans les villages, dans les villes ou dans les campagnes, on mettait les malades sur les places publiques, et on le priait de leur permettre seulement de toucher le bord de son vêtement. Et tous ceux qui le touchaient étaient guéris.

⁵⁶ובכל מקום אשר יבא אל הכפרים או הערים ואל השדות שם שמו את החולים בחוצות ויתחננו לו כי יגעו רק בציצת בגדו והיה כל אשר נגעו ונושעו׃
