¹And it came to pass when Jesus had finished commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities.

¹Lorsque Jésus eut achevé de donner ses instructions à ses douze disciples, il partit de là, pour enseigner et prêcher dans les villes du pays.

¹ויהי ככלות ישוע לצות את שנים עשר תלמידיו וילך משם ללמד ולקרא בעריהם׃

²Now when John heard in the prison the works of the Christ, he sent by his disciples

²Jean, ayant entendu parler dans sa prison des oeuvres du Christ, lui fit dire par ses disciples:

²ויוחנן שמע בבית הסהר את מעשי המשיח וישלח שנים מתלמידיו׃

³and said unto him, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another?

³Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?

³ויאמר אליו האתה הוא הבא אם נחכה לאחר׃

⁴And Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye hear and see:

⁴Jésus leur répondit: Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et ce que vous voyez:

⁴ויען ישוע ויאמר להם לכו הגידו ליוחנן את אשר שמעתם וראיתם׃

⁵the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good tidings preached to them.

⁵les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, et la bonne nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres.

⁵עורים ראים ופסחים מתהלכים מצרעים מטהרים וחרשים שומעין ומתים קמים ועניים מתבשרי ישועה הם׃

⁶And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.

⁶Heureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute!

⁶ואשרי אשר לא יכשל בי׃

⁷And as these went their way, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind?

⁷Comme ils s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire à la foule, au sujet de Jean: Qu'êtes-vous allés voir au désert? un roseau agité par le vent?

⁷המה הלכו להם וישוע החל לדבר אל המון העם על אדות יוחנן ויאמר מה זה יצאתם המדברה לראות הקנה אשר ינוע ברוח׃

⁸But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft [raiment]? Behold, they that wear soft [raiment] are in king's houses.

⁸Mais, qu'êtes-vous allés voir? un homme vêtu d'habits précieux? Voici, ceux qui portent des habits précieux sont dans les maisons des rois.

⁸ואם לא מה זה יצאתם לראות האיש לבוש בגדי עדנים הנה הלבשים עדנים בבתי המלכים המה׃

⁹But wherefore went ye out? to see a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

⁹Qu'êtes-vous donc allés voir? un prophète? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète.

⁹ואם לא מה זה יצאתם לראות אם איש נביא הן אני אמר לכם כי גם גדול הוא מנביא׃

¹⁰This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee.

¹⁰Car c'est celui dont il est écrit: Voici, j'envoie mon messager devant ta face, Pour préparer ton chemin devant toi.

¹⁰כי זה הוא אשר כתוב עליו הנני שלח מלאכי לפניך ופנה רדכך לפניך׃

¹¹Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not arisen a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is but little in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

¹¹Je vous le dis en vérité, parmi ceux qui sont nés de femmes, il n'en a point paru de plus grand que Jean-Baptiste. Cependant, le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui.

¹¹אמן אמר אני לכם לא קם בילודי אשה איש גדול מיוחנן המטביל אך הקטן במלכות השמים גדול הוא ממנו׃

¹²And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and men of violence take it by force.

¹²Depuis le temps de Jean-Baptiste jusqu'à présent, le royaume des cieux est forcé, et ce sont les violents qui s'en emparent.

¹²ומימי יוחנן המטביל עד הנה מלכות השמים נתפשה בחזקה והמתחזקים יחטפוה׃

¹³For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

¹³Car tous les prophètes et la loi ont prophétisé jusqu'à Jean;

¹³כי כל הנביאים והתורה עדי יוחנן נבאו׃

¹⁴And if ye are willing to receive [it,] this is Elijah, that is to come.

¹⁴et, si vous voulez le comprendre, c'est lui qui est l'Elie qui devait venir.

¹⁴ואם תרצו לקבל הנה הוא אליה העתיד לבוא׃

¹⁵He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁵Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre entende.

¹⁵מי אשר אזנים לו לשמע ישמע׃

¹⁶But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the marketplaces, who call unto their fellows

¹⁶A qui comparerai-je cette génération? Elle ressemble à des enfants assis dans des places publiques, et qui, s'adressant à d'autres enfants,

¹⁶ואל מי אדמה את הדור הזה דומה הוא לילדים הישבים בשוקים וקראים לחבריהם לאמר׃

¹⁷and say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not mourn.

¹⁷disent: Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez pas dansé; nous avons chanté des complaintes, et vous ne vous êtes pas lamentés.

¹⁷חללנו לכם בחלילים ולא רקדתם קוננו לכם קינה ולא ספדתם׃

¹⁸For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon.

¹⁸Car Jean est venu, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et ils disent: Il a un démon.

¹⁸כי בא יוחנן לא אכל ולא שתה ויאמרו שד בו׃

¹⁹The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! And wisdom is justified by her works.

¹⁹Le Fils de l'homme est venu, mangeant et buvant, et ils disent: C'est un mangeur et un buveur, un ami des publicains et des gens de mauvaise vie. Mais la sagesse a été justifiée par ses oeuvres.

¹⁹ויבא בן האדם והוא אכל ושתה ויאמרו הנה איש זולל וסבא ואהב מוכסים וחטאים ונצדקה החכמה מאת בניה׃

²⁰Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not.

²⁰Alors il se mit à faire des reproches aux villes dans lesquelles avaient eu lieu la plupart de ses miracles, parce qu'elles ne s'étaient pas repenties.

²⁰אז החל לגער בערים אשר רב גבורותיו נעשו בתוכן ולא שבו׃

²¹Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²¹Malheur à toi, Chorazin! malheur à toi, Bethsaïda! car, si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous avaient été faits dans Tyr et dans Sidon, il y a longtemps qu'elles se seraient repenties, en prenant le sac et la cendre.

²¹אוי לך כורזין אוי לך בית צידה כי הגבורות אשר נעשו בקרבכן לו בצור ובצידון נעשו הלא כבר שבו בשק ואפר׃

²²But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.

²²C'est pourquoi je vous le dis: au jour du jugement, Tyr et Sidon seront traitées moins rigoureusement que vous.

²²אבל אני אמר לכם כי ביום הדין יקל לצור וצידון יותר מכם׃

²³And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted unto heaven? thou shalt go down unto Hades: for if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in thee, it would have remained until this day.

²³Et toi, Capernaüm, seras-tu élevée jusqu'au ciel? Non. Tu seras abaissée jusqu'au séjour des morts; car, si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de toi avaient été faits dans Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd'hui.

²³ואת כפר נחום המרוממה עד השמים עד שאול תורדי כי הגבורות אשר נעשו בתוכך לו בסדום נעשו כי עתה עמדה על תלה עד היום הזה׃

²⁴But I say unto you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

²⁴C'est pourquoi je vous le dis: au jour du jugement, le pays de Sodome sera traité moins rigoureusement que toi.

²⁴אבל אני אמר לכם כי ביום הדין יקל לאדמת סדום ממך׃

²⁵At that season Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes:

²⁵En ce temps-là, Jésus prit la parole, et dit: Je te loue, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents, et de ce que tu les as révélées aux enfants.

²⁵בעת ההיא ענה ישוע ואמר אודך אבי אדון השמים והארץ כי הסתרת את אלה מן החכמים והנבונים וגליתם לעוללים׃

²⁶yea, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in thy sight.

²⁶Oui, Père, je te loue de ce que tu l'as voulu ainsi.

²⁶הן אבי כי כן היה רצון לפניך׃

²⁷All things have been delivered unto me of my Father: and no one knoweth the Son, save the Father; neither doth any know the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal [him.]

²⁷Toutes choses m'ont été données par mon Père, et personne ne connaît le Fils, si ce n'est le Père; personne non plus ne connaît le Père, si ce n'est le Fils et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler.

²⁷הכל נמסר לי מאת אבי ואין מכיר את הבן בלתי האב ואין מכיר את האב בלתי הבן ואשר יחפץ הבן לגלותו לו׃

²⁸Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

²⁸Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et chargés, et je vous donnerai du repos.

²⁸לכו אלי כל העמלים והטעונים ואני אניח לכם׃

²⁹Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

²⁹Prenez mon joug sur vous et recevez mes instructions, car je suis doux et humble de coeur; et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes.

²⁹קבלו עליכם את עלי ולמדו ממני כי ענו ושפל רוח אנכי ותמצאו מרגוע לנפשתיכם׃

³⁰For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

³⁰Car mon joug est doux, et mon fardeau léger.

³⁰כי עלי נעים הוא וקל משאי׃
