¹And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, saying,

¹En ce temps-là parut Jean Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée.

¹בימים ההם בא יוחנן המטביל ויהי קרא במדבר יהודה לאמר׃

²Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

²Il disait: Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche.

²שובו כי מלכות השמים הגיעה׃

³For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

³Jean est celui qui avait été annoncé par Esaïe, le prophète, lorsqu'il dit: C'est ici la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, Aplanissez ses sentiers.

³הלא זה הוא אשר נבא עליו ישעיהו הנביא לאמר קול קורא במדבר פנו דרך יהוה ישרו מסלותיו׃

⁴Now John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

⁴Jean avait un vêtement de poils de chameau, et une ceinture de cuir autour des reins. Il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel sauvage.

⁴והוא יוחנן לבושו שער גמלים ואזור עור במתניו ומאכלו חגבים ודבש היער׃

⁵Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan;

⁵Les habitants de Jérusalem, de toute la Judée et de tout le pays des environs du Jourdain, se rendaient auprès de lui;

⁵ויצאו אליו ישבי ירושלים וכל יהודה וכל ככר הירדן׃

⁶and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁶et, confessant leurs péchés, ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le fleuve du Jourdain.

⁶ויטבלו על ידו בירדן מתודים את חטאתם׃

⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷Mais, voyant venir à son baptême beaucoup de pharisiens et de sadducéens, il leur dit: Races de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir?

⁷ויהי כראותו רבים מן הפרושים והצדוקים נגשים לטבילתו ויאמר להם ילדי הצפעונים מי השכיל אתכם להמלט מן הקצף הבא׃

⁸Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance:

⁸Produisez donc du fruit digne de la repentance,

⁸לכן עשו פרי הראוי לתשובה׃

⁹and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

⁹et ne prétendez pas dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père! Car je vous déclare que de ces pierres-ci Dieu peut susciter des enfants à Abraham.

⁹ואל תחשבו בלבבכם לאמר אברהם הוא אבינו כי אני אמר לכם כי מן האבנים האלה יכול האלהים להקים בנים לאברהם׃

¹⁰And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

¹⁰Déjà la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres: tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bons fruits sera coupé et jeté au feu.

¹⁰וכבר הושם הגרזן על שרש העצים והנה כל עץ אשר איננו עשה פרי טוב יגדע וישלך באש׃

¹¹I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and [in] fire:

¹¹Moi, je vous baptise d'eau, pour vous amener à la repentance; mais celui qui vient après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter ses souliers. Lui, il vous baptisera du Saint-Esprit et de feu.

¹¹הן אנכי טובל אתכם במים לתשובה והבא אחרי חזק הוא ממני אשר אינני כדי לשאת נעליו והוא יטבל אתכם ברוח הקדש ובאש׃

¹²whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

¹²Il a son van à la main; il nettoiera son aire, et il amassera son blé dans le grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s'éteint point.

¹²אשר בידו המזרה וזרה את גרנו ואסף את דגנו אל אוצרו ואת המץ ישרפנו באש אשר לא תכבה׃

¹³Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

¹³Alors Jésus vint de la Galilée au Jourdain vers Jean, pour être baptisé par lui.

¹³ויבא ישוע מן הגליל הירדנה אל יוחנן להטבל על ידו׃

¹⁴But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

¹⁴Mais Jean s'y opposait, en disant: C'est moi qui ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et tu viens à moi!

¹⁴ויוחנן חשך אותו לאמר אני צריך להטבל על ידך ואתה בא אלי׃

¹⁵But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.

¹⁵Jésus lui répondit: Laisse faire maintenant, car il est convenable que nous accomplissions ainsi tout ce qui est juste. Et Jean ne lui résista plus.

¹⁵ויען ישוע ויאמר אליו הניחה לי כי כן נאוה לנו למלא כל הצדקה וינח לו׃

¹⁶And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him;

¹⁶Dès que Jésus eut été baptisé, il sortit de l'eau. Et voici, les cieux s'ouvrirent, et il vit l'Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.

¹⁶ויהי כאשר נטבל ישוע וימהר לעלות מן המים והנה נפתחו לו השמים וירא את רוח אלהים יורדת כיונה ונחה עליו׃

¹⁷and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁷Et voici, une voix fit entendre des cieux ces paroles: Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai mis toute mon affection.

¹⁷והנה קול מן השמים אומר זה בני ידידי אשר רצתה נפשי בו׃
