¹Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

¹Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad avaient une quantité considérable de troupeaux, et ils virent que le pays de Jaezer et le pays de Galaad étaient un lieu propre pour des troupeaux.

¹ומקנה רב היה לבני ראובן ולבני גד עצום מאד ויראו את ארץ יעזר ואת ארץ גלעד והנה המקום מקום מקנה׃

²the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,

²Alors les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben vinrent auprès de Moïse, du sacrificateur Eléazar et des princes de l'assemblée, et ils leur dirent:

²ויבאו בני גד ובני ראובן ויאמרו אל משה ואל אלעזר הכהן ואל נשיאי העדה לאמר׃

³Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

³Atharoth, Dibon, Jaezer, Nimra, Hesbon, Elealé, Sebam, Nebo et Beon,

³עטרות ודיבן ויעזר ונמרה וחשבון ואלעלה ושבם ונבו ובען׃

⁴the land which Jehovah smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle; and thy servants have cattle.

⁴ce pays que l'Eternel a frappé devant l'assemblée d'Israël, est un lieu propre pour des troupeaux, et tes serviteurs ont des troupeaux.

⁴הארץ אשר הכה יהוה לפני עדת ישראל ארץ מקנה הוא ולעבדיך מקנה׃

⁵And they said, If we have found favor in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession; bring us not over the Jordan.

⁵Ils ajoutèrent: Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que la possession de ce pays soit accordée à tes serviteurs, et ne nous fais point passer le Jourdain.

⁵ויאמרו אם מצאנו חן בעיניך יתן את הארץ הזאת לעבדיך לאחזה אל תעברנו את הירדן׃

⁶And Moses said unto the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to the war, and shall ye sit here?

⁶Moïse répondit aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben: Vos frères iront-ils à la guerre, et vous, resterez-vous ici?

⁶ויאמר משה לבני גד ולבני ראובן האחיכם יבאו למלחמה ואתם תשבו פה׃

⁷And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which Jehovah hath given them?

⁷Pourquoi voulez-vous décourager les enfants d'Israël de passer dans le pays que l'Eternel leur donne?

⁷ולמה תנואון את לב בני ישראל מעבר אל הארץ אשר נתן להם יהוה׃

⁸Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.

⁸Ainsi firent vos pères, quand je les envoyai de Kadès-Barnéa pour examiner le pays.

⁸כה עשו אבתיכם בשלחי אתם מקדש ברנע לראות את הארץ׃

⁹For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which Jehovah had given them.

⁹Ils montèrent jusqu'à la vallée d'Eschcol, et, après avoir examiné le pays, ils découragèrent les enfants d'Israël d'aller dans le pays que l'Eternel leur donnait.

⁹ויעלו עד נחל אשכול ויראו את הארץ ויניאו את לב בני ישראל לבלתי בא אל הארץ אשר נתן להם יהוה׃

¹⁰And Jehovah's anger was kindled in that day, and he sware, saying,

¹⁰La colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma ce jour-là, et il jura en disant:

¹⁰ויחר אף יהוה ביום ההוא וישבע לאמר׃

¹¹Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

¹¹Ces hommes qui sont montés d'Egypte, depuis l'âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, ne verront point le pays que j'ai juré de donner à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, car ils n'ont pas suivi pleinement ma voie,

¹¹אם יראו האנשים העלים ממצרים מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה את האדמה אשר נשבעתי לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב כי לא מלאו אחרי׃

¹²save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have wholly followed Jehovah.

¹²excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné, le Kenizien, et Josué, fils de Nun, qui ont pleinement suivi la voie de l'Eternel.

¹²בלתי כלב בן יפנה הקנזי ויהושע בן נון כי מלאו אחרי יהוה׃

¹³And Jehovah's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander to and fro in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of Jehovah, was consumed.

¹³La colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les fit errer dans le désert pendant quarante années, jusqu'à l'anéantissement de toute la génération qui avait fait le mal aux yeux de l'Eternel.

¹³ויחר אף יהוה בישראל וינעם במדבר ארבעים שנה עד תם כל הדור העשה הרע בעיני יהוה׃

¹⁴And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Jehovah toward Israel.

¹⁴Et voici, vous prenez la place de vos pères comme des rejetons d'hommes pécheurs, pour rendre la colère de l'Eternel encore plus ardente contre Israël.

¹⁴והנה קמתם תחת אבתיכם תרבות אנשים חטאים לספות עוד על חרון אף יהוה אל ישראל׃

¹⁵For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye will destroy all this people.

¹⁵Car, si vous vous détournez de lui, il continuera de laisser Israël au désert, et vous causerez la perte de tout ce peuple.

¹⁵כי תשובן מאחריו ויסף עוד להניחו במדבר ושחתם לכל העם הזה׃

¹⁶And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:

¹⁶Ils s'approchèrent de Moïse, et ils dirent: Nous construirons ici des parcs pour nos troupeaux et des villes pour nos petits enfants;

¹⁶ויגשו אליו ויאמרו גדרת צאן נבנה למקננו פה וערים לטפנו׃

¹⁷but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

¹⁷puis nous nous équiperons en hâte pour marcher devant les enfants d'Israël, jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons introduits dans le lieu qui leur est destiné; et nos petits enfants demeureront dans les villes fortes, à cause des habitants du pays.

¹⁷ואנחנו נחלץ חשים לפני בני ישראל עד אשר אם הביאנם אל מקומם וישב טפנו בערי המבצר מפני ישבי הארץ׃

¹⁸We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.

¹⁸Nous ne retournerons point dans nos maisons avant que les enfants d'Israël aient pris possession chacun de son héritage;

¹⁸לא נשוב אל בתינו עד התנחל בני ישראל איש נחלתו׃

¹⁹For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.

¹⁹et nous ne posséderons rien avec eux de l'autre côté du Jourdain, ni plus loin, puisque nous aurons notre héritage de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, à l'orient.

¹⁹כי לא ננחל אתם מעבר לירדן והלאה כי באה נחלתנו אלינו מעבר הירדן מזרחה׃

²⁰And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will arm yourselves to go before Jehovah to the war,

²⁰Moïse leur dit: Si vous faites cela, si vous vous armez pour combattre devant l'Eternel,

²⁰ויאמר אליהם משה אם תעשון את הדבר הזה אם תחלצו לפני יהוה למלחמה׃

²¹and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before Jehovah, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,

²¹si tous ceux de vous qui s'armeront passent le Jourdain devant l'Eternel jusqu'à ce qu'il ait chassé ses ennemis loin de sa face,

²¹ועבר לכם כל חלוץ את הירדן לפני יהוה עד הורישו את איביו מפניו׃

²²and the land is subdued before Jehovah; then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless towards Jehovah, and towards Israel; and this land shall be unto you for a possession before Jehovah.

²²et si vous revenez seulement après que le pays aura été soumis devant l'Eternel, -vous serez alors sans reproche vis-à-vis de l'Eternel et vis-à-vis d'Israël, et cette contrée-ci sera votre propriété devant l'Eternel.

²²ונכבשה הארץ לפני יהוה ואחר תשבו והייתם נקיים מיהוה ומישראל והיתה הארץ הזאת לכם לאחזה לפני יהוה׃

²³But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against Jehovah; and be sure your sin will find you out.

²³Mais si vous ne faites pas ainsi, vous péchez contre l'Eternel; sachez que votre péché vous atteindra.

²³ואם לא תעשון כן הנה חטאתם ליהוה ודעו חטאתכם אשר תמצא אתכם׃

²⁴Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.

²⁴Construisez des villes pour vos petits enfants et des parcs pour vos troupeaux, et faites ce que votre bouche a déclaré.

²⁴בנו לכם ערים לטפכם וגדרת לצנאכם והיצא מפיכם תעשו׃

²⁵And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.

²⁵Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben dirent à Moïse: Tes serviteurs feront ce que mon seigneur ordonne.

²⁵ויאמר בני גד ובני ראובן אל משה לאמר עבדיך יעשו כאשר אדני מצוה׃

²⁶Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead;

²⁶Nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et tout notre bétail, resteront dans les villes de Galaad;

²⁶טפנו נשינו מקננו וכל בהמתנו יהיו שם בערי הגלעד׃

²⁷but thy servants will pass over, every man that is armed for war, before Jehovah to battle, as my lord saith.

²⁷et tes serviteurs, tous armés pour la guerre, iront combattre devant l'Eternel, comme dit mon seigneur.

²⁷ועבדיך יעברו כל חלוץ צבא לפני יהוה למלחמה כאשר אדני דבר׃

²⁸So Moses gave charge concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel.

²⁸Moïse donna des ordres à leur sujet au sacrificateur Eléazar, à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux chefs de famille dans les tribus des enfants d'Israël.

²⁸ויצו להם משה את אלעזר הכהן ואת יהושע בן נון ואת ראשי אבות המטות לבני ישראל׃

²⁹And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man that is armed to battle, before Jehovah, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:

²⁹Il leur dit: Si les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben passent avec vous le Jourdain, tous armés pour combattre devant l'Eternel, et que le pays soit soumis devant vous, vous leur donnerez en propriété la contrée de Galaad.

²⁹ויאמר משה אלהם אם יעברו בני גד ובני ראובן אתכם את הירדן כל חלוץ למלחמה לפני יהוה ונכבשה הארץ לפניכם ונתתם להם את ארץ הגלעד לאחזה׃

³⁰but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

³⁰Mais s'ils ne marchent point en armes avec vous, qu'ils s'établissent au milieu de vous dans le pays de Canaan.

³⁰ואם לא יעברו חלוצים אתכם ונאחזו בתככם בארץ כנען׃

³¹And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As Jehovah hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.

³¹Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben répondirent: Nous ferons ce que l'Eternel a dit à tes serviteurs.

³¹ויענו בני גד ובני ראובן לאמר את אשר דבר יהוה אל עבדיך כן נעשה׃

³²We will pass over armed before Jehovah into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance [shall remain] with us beyond the Jordan.

³²Nous passerons en armes devant l'Eternel au pays de Canaan; mais que nous possédions notre héritage de ce côté-ci du Jourdain.

³²נחנו נעבר חלוצים לפני יהוה ארץ כנען ואתנו אחזת נחלתנו מעבר לירדן׃

³³And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to the cities thereof with [their] borders, even the cities of the land round about.

³³Moïse donna aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben, et à la moitié de la tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le royaume de Sihon, roi des Amoréens, et le royaume d'Og, roi de Basan, le pays avec ses villes, avec les territoires des villes du pays tout alentour.

³³ויתן להם משה לבני גד ולבני ראובן ולחצי שבט מנשה בן יוסף את ממלכת סיחן מלך האמרי ואת ממלכת עוג מלך הבשן הארץ לעריה בגבלת ערי הארץ סביב׃

³⁴And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

³⁴Les fils de Gad bâtirent Dibon, Atharoth, Aroër,

³⁴ויבנו בני גד את דיבן ואת עטרת ואת ערער׃

³⁵and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,

³⁵Athroth-Schophan, Jaezer, Jogbeha,

³⁵ואת עטרת שופן ואת יעזר ויגבהה׃

³⁶and Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep.

³⁶Beth-Nimra et Beth-Haran, villes fortes, et ils firent des parcs pour les troupeaux.

³⁶ואת בית נמרה ואת בית הרן ערי מבצר וגדרת צאן׃

³⁷And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,

³⁷Les fils de Ruben bâtirent Hesbon, Elealé et Kirjathaïm,

³⁷ובני ראובן בנו את חשבון ואת אלעלא ואת קריתים׃

³⁸and Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Sibmah: and they gave other names unto the cities which they builded.

³⁸Nebo et Baal-Meon, dont les noms furent changés, et Sibma, et ils donnèrent des noms aux villes qu'ils bâtirent.

³⁸ואת נבו ואת בעל מעון מוסבת שם ואת שבמה ויקראו בשמת את שמות הערים אשר בנו׃

³⁹And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites that were therein.

³⁹Les fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, marchèrent contre Galaad, et s'en emparèrent; ils chassèrent les Amoréens qui y étaient.

³⁹וילכו בני מכיר בן מנשה גלעדה וילכדה ויורש את האמרי אשר בה׃

⁴⁰And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.

⁴⁰Moïse donna Galaad à Makir, fils de Manassé, qui s'y établit.

⁴⁰ויתן משה את הגלעד למכיר בן מנשה וישב בה׃

⁴¹And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the towns thereof, and called them Havvoth-jair.

⁴¹Jaïr, fils de Manassé, se mit en marche, prit les bourgs, et les appela bourgs de Jaïr.

⁴¹ויאיר בן מנשה הלך וילכד את חותיהם ויקרא אתהן חות יאיר׃

⁴²And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

⁴²Nobach se mit en marche, prit Kenath avec les villes de son ressort, et l'appela Nobach, d'après son nom.

⁴²ונבח הלך וילכד את קנת ואת בנתיה ויקרא לה נבח בשמו׃
