¹Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth?

¹Ignorez-vous, frères, -car je parle à des gens qui connaissent la loi, -que la loi exerce son pouvoir sur l'homme aussi longtemps qu'il vit?

¹או הלא ידעתם אחי ולידעי התורה אנכי מדבר כי התורה תשלט על האדם כל ימי חייו׃

²For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

²Ainsi, une femme mariée est liée par la loi à son mari tant qu'il est vivant; mais si le mari meurt, elle est dégagée de la loi qui la liait à son mari.

²כי אשה בעלת בעל קשורה היא באישה כפי התורה בחייו ובמות הבעל פטורה היא מתורת בעלה׃

³So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.

³Si donc, du vivant de son mari, elle devient la femme d'un autre homme, elle sera appelée adultère; mais si le mari meurt, elle est affranchie de la loi, de sorte qu'elle n'est point adultère en devenant la femme d'un autre.

³והנה אם תחיה לאיש אחר בחיי בעלה נאפת יקרא לה אבל אחרי מות בעלה פטורה היא מן התורה ואיננה נאפת בהיותה לאיש אחר׃

⁴Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, [even] to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.

⁴De même, mes frères, vous aussi vous avez été, par le corps de Christ, mis à mort en ce qui concerne la loi, pour que vous apparteniez à un autre, à celui qui est ressuscité des morts, afin que nous portions des fruits pour Dieu.

⁴לכן אחי הומתם גם אתם לתורה בגוית המשיח להיותכם לאחר לאשר נעור מן המתים למען נעשה פרי לאלהים׃

⁵For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

⁵Car, lorsque nous étions dans la chair, les passions des péchés provoquées par la loi agissaient dans nos membres, de sorte que nous portions des fruits pour la mort.

⁵כי בעת היותנו בבשר תשוקות החטא אשר התעוררו על ידי התורה היו פעלות באברינו לעשות פרי למות׃

⁶But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

⁶Mais maintenant, nous avons été dégagés de la loi, étant morts à cette loi sous laquelle nous étions retenus, de sorte que nous servons dans un esprit nouveau, et non selon la lettre qui a vieilli.

⁶אבל עתה נפטרנו מן התורה כי מתנו לאשר היינו אסורים בו למען נעבד מעתה לפי התחדשות הרוח ולא לפי ישן הכתב׃

⁷What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

⁷Que dirons-nous donc? La loi est-elle péché? Loin de là! Mais je n'ai connu le péché que par la loi. Car je n'aurais pas connu la convoitise, si la loi n'eût dit: Tu ne convoiteras point.

⁷אם כן מה נאמר הכי התורה חטא היא חלילה אלא לא ידעתי את החטא בלתי על ידי התורה כי לא הייתי יודע החמוד לולי אמרה התורה לא תחמד׃

⁸but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin [is] dead.

⁸Et le péché, saisissant l'occasion, produisit en moi par le commandement toutes sortes de convoitises; car sans loi le péché est mort.

⁸וימצא החטא סבה לו במצוה לעורר בקרבי כל חמוד כי מבלעדי התורה החטא מת הוא׃

⁹And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;

⁹Pour moi, étant autrefois sans loi, je vivais; mais quand le commandement vint, le péché reprit vie, et moi je mourus.

⁹ואני חייתי מלפנים בלא תורה וכאשר באה המצוה ויחי החטא׃

¹⁰and the commandment, which [was] unto life, this I found [to be] unto death:

¹⁰Ainsi, le commandement qui conduit à la vie se trouva pour moi conduire à la mort.

¹⁰ואני מתי והמצוה אשר נתנה לחיים היא נמצאה לי למות׃

¹¹for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.

¹¹Car le péché saisissant l'occasion, me séduisit par le commandement, et par lui me fit mourir.

¹¹כי מצא החטא סבה במצוה להתעות אתי ויהרגני על ידה׃

¹²So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.

¹²La loi donc est sainte, et le commandement est saint, juste et bon.

¹²ובכן התורה היא קדושה והמצוה קדושה וישרה וטובה׃

¹³Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; --that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.

¹³Ce qui est bon a-t-il donc été pour moi une cause de mort? Loin de là! Mais c'est le péché, afin qu'il se manifestât comme péché en me donnant la mort par ce qui est bon, et que, par le commandement, il devînt condamnable au plus haut point.

¹³הכי הטובה היתה לי למות חלילה אלא החטא למען יראה כי חטא הוא הביא לי על ידי הטובה את המות למען אשר יהיה החטא לחטאה יתרה על ידי המצוה׃

¹⁴For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

¹⁴Nous savons, en effet, que la loi est spirituelle; mais moi, je suis charnel, vendu au péché.

¹⁴כי ידעים אנחנו שהתורה היא רוחנית ואני של בשר ונמכר תחת יד החטא׃

¹⁵For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do.

¹⁵Car je ne sais pas ce que je fais: je ne fais point ce que je veux, et je fais ce que je hais.

¹⁵כי את אשר אני פעל לא ידעתי כי אינני עשה את אשר אני רצה בו כי אם אשר שנאתי אתו אני עשה׃

¹⁶But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good.

¹⁶Or, si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, je reconnais par là que la loi est bonne.

¹⁶ובעשותי את אשר לא רציתי בו הנני מודה בזאת כי התורה טובה היא׃

¹⁷So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.

¹⁷Et maintenant ce n'est plus moi qui le fais, mais c'est le péché qui habite en moi.

¹⁷ועתה לא אנכי עוד הפעל אתו כי אם החטא הישב בי׃

¹⁸For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good [is] not.

¹⁸Ce qui est bon, je le sais, n'habite pas en moi, c'est-à-dire dans ma chair: j'ai la volonté, mais non le pouvoir de faire le bien.

¹⁸כי ידעתי אשר בי בבשרי לא ישב טוב הן הרצון יש עמדי אבל עשות הטוב לא מצאתי׃

¹⁹For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise.

¹⁹Car je ne fais pas le bien que je veux, et je fais le mal que je ne veux pas.

¹⁹כי אינני עשה הטוב אשר אני רצה בו כי אם הרע אשר אינני רצה בו אותו אני עשה׃

²⁰But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.

²⁰Et si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n'est plus moi qui le fais, c'est le péché qui habite en moi.

²⁰ואם את אשר לא רציתי בו אני עשה לא עוד אנכי הפעל כי החטא הישב בקרבי׃

²¹I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present.

²¹Je trouve donc en moi cette loi: quand je veux faire le bien, le mal est attaché à moi.

²¹ובכן מצא אני בי זה החק אנכי רצה לעשות הטוב ודבק בי הרע׃

²²For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

²²Car je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu, selon l'homme intérieur;

²²כי לפי האדם הפנימי חפצתי בתורת אלהים׃

²³but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.

²³mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi, qui lutte contre la loi de mon entendement, et qui me rend captif de la loi du péché, qui est dans mes membres.

²³אך ראה אני באברי חק אחר הלחם לחק שכלי ויוליכני שבי לתורת החטא אשר באברי׃

²⁴Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death?

²⁴Misérable que je suis! Qui me délivrera du corps de cette mort?...

²⁴אוי לי האדם העני מי יצילני מגוף המות הזה׃

²⁵I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I of myself with the mind, indeed, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

²⁵Grâces soient rendues à Dieu par Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur!... Ainsi donc, moi-même, je suis par l'entendement esclave de la loi de Dieu, et je suis par la chair esclave de la loi du péché.

²⁵אודה לאלהים בישוע המשיח אדנינו׃ [ (Romans 7:26) לכן בשכלי הנני עבד לתורת האלהים ובבשרי אני עבד לתורת החטא׃ ]
