¹با چشمان خود عهد کرده ام که به هیچ دختری با نظر شهوت نگاه نکنم.

¹I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

²چون می دانم که خدای قادر مطلق عامل این کار را چه جزا می دهد.

²For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

³او بر سر مردم شریر و بدکار از آسمان بلا و مصیبت را نازل می کند.

³Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

⁴او هر کاری که می کنم و هر قدمی که بر می دارم، می بیند.

⁴Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

⁵من هرگز به راه غلط نرفته ام و کسی را فریب نداده ام.

⁵If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

⁶می خواهم خدا خودش مرا با ترازوی عدالت بسنجد تا بیگناهی من ثابت شود.

⁶Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.

⁷اگر از راه راست انحراف کرده باشم، یا دلم دنبال آنچه که چشمم خواسته است، رفته باشد و یا دستم به گناه آلوده شده باشد،

⁷If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

⁸آنوقت چیزی را که کاشته ام دیگران بخورند و همه محصولات من از ریشه کنده شوند.

⁸Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

⁹اگر دلم فریفتۀ زن مرد دیگر شده باشد یا من به دروازۀ زن همسایه کمین کرده باشم،

⁹If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;

¹⁰پس زن من هم کنیز مرد دیگر و با او همبستر شود،

¹⁰Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

¹¹زیرا این کار جنایت است و عامل آن سزاوار مجازات می باشد

¹¹For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

¹²و مثل آتش سوزان جهنم می تواند همه چیز مرا از بین ببرد و محصول مرا ریشه کن سازد.

¹²For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

¹³اگر شکایت کنیز و غلام خود را علیه خود نشنیده و با آن ها از روی انصاف رفتار نکرده باشم،

¹³If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

¹⁴چطور می توانم با خدا روبرو شوم و وقتیکه از من بازخواست کند، چه جوابی می توانم به او بدهم.

¹⁴What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

¹⁵زیرا همان خدائی که مرا آفریده، کنیز و غلام مرا هم خلق کرده است.

¹⁵Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

¹⁶از کمک به مردم نادار و مسکین دریغ نکرده ام، بیوه زنی را در حال بیچارگی نگذاشته ام،

¹⁶If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

¹⁷نان خود را به تنهائی نخورده ام و همیشه با یتیمان گرسنه قسمت کرده

¹⁷Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

¹⁸و در سراسر عمر خود برای آن ها مثل پدر غمخوار و از کودکی راهنمای بیوه زنان بوده ام.

¹⁸(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)

¹⁹اگر می دیدم که کسی لباس ندارد و از سرما در خطر است و یا شخص مسکینی برهنه بسر می برد،

¹⁹If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

²⁰از پشم گوسفندانم لباس مهیا می کردم و به او می دادم تا از سردی هوا در امان بوده از صمیم دل برای من دعا کند و من برکت ببینم.

²⁰If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

²¹اگر بخاطر اینکه در محکمه طرفدار دارم، حق یتیمی را پایمال کرده باشم،

²¹If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

²²بازوی من از شانه قطع شود و دستم بشکند.

²²Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

²³چون من از مجازات و عظمت خدا می ترسیدم، هرگز جرأت نمی کردم که به چنین کاری دست بزنم.

²³For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

²⁴به طلا و نقره اعتماد و اتکاء نداشته ام

²⁴If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

²⁵و مال ثروت زیاد مایۀ خوشی من نبوده است.

²⁵If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

²⁶به آفتاب تابان و مهتاب درخشان دل نبسته ام.

²⁶If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

²⁷آن ها را نپرستیده و از دور نبوسیده ام.

²⁷And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

²⁸زیرا این کار هم یک عمل زشت است و اگر آن کار را می کردم، مستوجب مجازات می بودم، چون از خدای قادر مطلق منکر می شدم.

²⁸This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

²⁹هرگز از مصیبت دشمنان خوشی نکرده ام و از بلائی که بر سر شان آمده است، خوشحال نبوده ام.

²⁹If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

³⁰زبان خود را از گناه بازداشته و برای آن ها دعای بد نکرده ام.

³⁰Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

³¹آنهائی که برای من کار می کنند هرگز گرسنه نبوده اند.

³¹If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

³²هیچ بیگانه ای را نگذاشته ام که شب در سر سرک بخوابد و دروازۀ خانۀ من همیشه به روی مسافران باز بوده است.

³²The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

³³هیچگاهی مانند دیگران نکوشیده ام که گناهان خود را پنهان کنم

³³If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

³⁴و از ترس سرزنشِ مردم خاموش در خانه مانده و بیرون نروم.

³⁴Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

³⁵آیا کسی هست که به سخنان من گوش بدهد؟ من قسم می خورم که حقیقت را می گویم. بگذارید که خدای قادر مطلق جواب مرا بگوید و اتهاماتی را که دشمنانم علیه من وارد کرده اند نشان بدهد.

³⁵Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

³⁶من آن را بدوش خود می گیرم و تاج سر خود می سازم.

³⁶Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

³⁷او را از همه کارهائی که کرده ام، آگاه می کنم و با سرفرازی در پیشگاه او حضور می یابم.

³⁷I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

³⁸اگر زمینی را که در آن کشت می کنم، از مالک اصلی اش بزور گرفته باشم،

³⁸If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

³⁹و از محصول آن بدون قیمت خورده و باعث قتل مالک آن شده باشم،در آن زمین بعوض گندم خار و بجای جَو علف هرزه بروید.» پایان کلام ایوب.

³⁹If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

⁴⁰در آن زمین بعوض گندم خار و بجای جَو علف هرزه بروید.» پایان کلام ایوب.

⁴⁰Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
