¹{To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David.} Free me, O Jehovah, from the evil man; preserve me from the violent man:

¹Untuk pemimpin kor. Mazmur Daud. (140-2) Lepaskanlah aku dari orang jahat, ya TUHAN, jagalah aku terhadap orang yang melakukan kekerasan.

²Who devise mischiefs in [their] heart; every day are they banded together for war.

²(140-3) Mereka merencanakan kejahatan dalam hati, dan setiap hari menimbulkan pertengkaran.

³They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.

³(140-4) Lidah mereka seperti ular berbisa, kata-kata mereka seperti racun ular sendok.

⁴Keep me, O Jehovah, from the hands of the wicked [man], preserve me from the violent man, who devise to overthrow my steps.

⁴(140-5) Ya TUHAN, lindungilah aku dari kuasa orang jahat, jagalah aku terhadap orang yang melakukan kekerasan yang bermaksud untuk menjatuhkan aku.

⁵The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the way-side; they have set traps for me. Selah.

⁵(140-6) Orang congkak diam-diam memasang jerat bagiku, dan membentangkan jaring untuk menangkap aku. Di sepanjang jalan mereka memasang perangkap untuk menjebak aku.

⁶I have said unto Jehovah, Thou art my ùGod: give ear, O Jehovah, to the voice of my supplications.

⁶(140-7) Ya TUHAN, aku berkata: Engkaulah Allahku, perhatikanlah doa permohonanku.

⁷Jehovah, the Lord, is the strength of my salvation: thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

⁷(140-8) TUHAN, Allahku, penyelamatku yang kuat, Engkau telah melindungi aku dalam pertempuran.

⁸Grant not, O Jehovah, the desire of the wicked; further not his device: they would exalt themselves. Selah.

⁸(140-9) Jangan kabulkan keinginan orang jahat, ya TUHAN, jangan biarkan rencana mereka berhasil.

⁹[As for] the head of those that encompass me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

⁹(140-10) Jangan biarkan musuhku menang; biarlah kata-kata jahat yang mereka ucapkan menimpa diri mereka yang memfitnah aku.

¹⁰Let burning coals fall on them; let them be cast into the fire; into deep waters, that they rise not up again.

¹⁰(140-11) Biarlah mereka dihujani bara api, dan dibuang ke dalam lubang maut, sehingga tak bisa keluar lagi.

¹¹Let not the man of [evil] tongue be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the man of violence to [his] ruin.

¹¹(140-12) Biarlah orang yang melakukan kekerasan ditimpa malapetaka, jangan biarkan pemfitnah mendiami bumi.

¹²I know that Jehovah will maintain the cause of the afflicted one, the right of the needy.

¹²(140-13) Aku tahu Engkau memberi keadilan kepada orang tertindas, dan membela perkara orang miskin.

¹³Yea, the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name; the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

¹³(140-14) Orang jujur akan memuji Engkau; mereka akan tinggal bersama-Mu.
