¹And he spoke also a parable to them to the purport that they should always pray and not faint,

¹Þá sagði hann þeim dæmisögu um það, hvernig þeir skyldu stöðugt biðja og eigi þreytast:

²saying, There was a judge in a city, not fearing God and not respecting man:

²,,Í borg einni var dómari, sem hvorki óttaðist Guð né skeytti um nokkurn mann.

³and there was a widow in that city, and she came to him, saying, Avenge me of mine adverse party.

³Í sömu borg var ekkja, sem kom einlægt til hans og sagði: ,Lát þú mig ná rétti á mótstöðumanni mínum.`

⁴And he would not for a time; but afterwards he said within himself, If even I fear not God and respect not man,

⁵at any rate because this widow annoys me I will avenge her, that she may not by perpetually coming completely harass me.

⁶And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge says.

⁶Og Drottinn mælti: ,,Heyrið, hvað rangláti dómarinn segir.

⁷And shall not God at all avenge his elect, who cry to him day and night, and he bears long as to them?

⁷Mun Guð þá ekki rétta hlut sinna útvöldu, sem hrópa til hans dag og nótt? Mun hann draga að hjálpa þeim?

⁸I say unto you that he will avenge them speedily. But when the Son of man comes, shall he indeed find faith on the earth?

⁸Ég segi yður: Hann mun skjótt rétta hlut þeirra. En mun Mannssonurinn finna trúna á jörðu, þegar hann kemur?``

⁹And he spoke also to some, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and made nothing of all the rest [of men], this parable:

¹⁰Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a tax-gatherer.

¹⁰,,Tveir menn fóru upp í helgidóminn að biðjast fyrir. Annar var farísei, hinn tollheimtumaður.

¹¹The Pharisee, standing, prayed thus to himself: God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, rapacious, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax-gatherer.

¹¹Faríseinn sté fram og baðst þannig fyrir með sjálfum sér: ,Guð, ég þakka þér, að ég er ekki eins og aðrir menn, ræningjar, ranglátir, hórkarlar eða þá eins og þessi tollheimtumaður.

¹²I fast twice in the week, I tithe everything I gain.

¹²Ég fasta tvisvar í viku og geld tíund af öllu, sem ég eignast.`

¹³And the tax-gatherer, standing afar off, would not lift up even his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, O God, have compassion on me, the sinner.

¹³En tollheimtumaðurinn stóð langt frá og vildi ekki einu sinni hefja augu sín til himins, heldur barði sér á brjóst og sagði: ,Guð, vertu mér syndugum líknsamur!`

¹⁴I say unto you, This [man] went down to his house justified rather than that [other]. For every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

¹⁴Ég segi yður: Þessi maður fór réttlættur heim til sín, en hinn ekki, því að hver sem upp hefur sjálfan sig, mun auðmýktur verða, en sá sem auðmýkir sjálfan sig, mun upp hafinn verða.``

¹⁵And they brought to him also infants that he might touch them, but the disciples when they saw [it] rebuked them.

¹⁶But Jesus calling them to [him] said, Suffer little children to come to me, and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of God.

¹⁷Verily I say to you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

¹⁷Sannlega segi ég yður: Hver sem tekur ekki við Guðs ríki eins og barn, mun aldrei inn í það koma.``

¹⁸And a certain ruler asked him saying, Good teacher, having done what, shall I inherit eternal life?

¹⁸Höfðingi nokkur spurði hann: ,,Góði meistari, hvað á ég að gjöra til þess að öðlast eilíft líf?``

¹⁹But Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, God.

¹⁹Jesús sagði við hann: ,,Hví kallar þú mig góðan? Enginn er góður nema Guð einn.

²⁰Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

²⁰Þú kannt boðorðin: ,Þú skalt ekki drýgja hór, þú skalt ekki morð fremja, þú skalt ekki stela, þú skalt ekki bera ljúgvitni, heiðra föður þinn og móður.```

²¹And he said, All these things have I kept from my youth.

²¹Hann sagði: ,,Alls þessa hef ég gætt frá æsku.``

²²And when Jesus had heard this, he said to him, One thing is lacking to thee yet: Sell all that thou hast and distribute to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in the heavens, and come, follow me.

²²Þegar Jesús heyrði þetta, sagði hann við hann: ,,Enn er þér eins vant: Sel allt, sem þú átt, og skipt meðal fátækra, og munt þú fjársjóð eiga á himnum. Kom síðan og fylg mér.``

²³But when he heard this he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

²³En er hann heyrði þetta, varð hann hryggur við, enda auðugur mjög.

²⁴But when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, he said, How difficultly shall those who have riches enter into the kingdom of God;

²⁴Jesús sá það og sagði: ,,Hve torvelt er þeim, sem auðinn hafa, að ganga inn í Guðs ríki.

²⁵for it is easier for a camel to enter through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

²⁵Auðveldara er úlfalda að fara gegnum nálarauga en auðmanni að komast inn í Guðs ríki.``

²⁶And those who heard it said, And who can be saved?

²⁶En þeir, sem á hlýddu, spurðu: ,,Hver getur þá orðið hólpinn?``

²⁷But he said, The things that are impossible with men are possible with God.

²⁷Hann mælti: ,,Það sem mönnum er um megn, það megnar Guð.``

²⁸And Peter said, Behold, *we* have left all things and have followed thee.

²⁸Þá sagði Pétur: ,,Vér yfirgáfum allt, sem vér áttum, og fylgdum þér.``

²⁹And he said to them, Verily I say to you, There is no one who has left home, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake,

²⁹Jesús sagði við þá: ,,Sannlega segi ég yður, að enginn hefur yfirgefið heimili, konu, bræður, foreldra eða börn Guðs ríkis vegna

³⁰who shall not receive manifold more at this time, and in the coming age life eternal.

³⁰án þess að hann fái margfalt aftur á þessum tíma og í hinum komandi heimi eilíft líf.``

³¹And he took the twelve to [him] and said to them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written of the Son of man by the prophets shall be accomplished;

³¹Hann tók þá tólf til sín og sagði við þá: ,,Nú förum vér upp til Jerúsalem, og mun allt það koma fram við Mannssoninn, sem skrifað er hjá spámönnunum.

³²for he shall be delivered up to the nations, and shall be mocked, and insulted, and spit upon.

³²Hann verður framseldur heiðingjum, menn munu hæða hann, misþyrma honum og hrækja á hann.

³³And when they have scourged [him] they will kill him; and on the third day he will rise again.

³³Þeir munu húðstrýkja hann og lífláta, en á þriðja degi mun hann upp rísa.``

³⁴And they understood nothing of these things. And this word was hidden from them, and they did not know what was said.

³⁴En þeir skildu ekkert af þessu, orð þessi voru þeim hulin, og þeir skynjuðu ekki það, sem sagt var.

³⁵And it came to pass when he came into the neighbourhood of Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the wayside begging.

³⁶And when he heard the crowd passing, he inquired what this might be.

³⁷And they told him that Jesus the Nazaraean was passing by.

³⁸And he called out saying, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.

³⁸Þá hrópaði hann: ,,Jesús, sonur Davíðs, miskunna þú mér!``

³⁹And those [who were] going before rebuked him that he might be silent; but *he* cried out so much the more, Son of David, have mercy on me.

³⁹En þeir sem á undan fóru, höstuðu á hann, að hann þegði. En hann hrópaði því meir: ,,Sonur Davíðs, miskunna þú mér!``

⁴⁰And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be led to him. And when he drew nigh he asked him [saying],

⁴⁰Jesús nam staðar og bauð að leiða hann til sín. Er hann kom nær, spurði Jesús hann:

⁴¹What wilt thou that I shall do to thee? And he said, Lord, that I may see.

⁴¹,,Hvað vilt þú, að ég gjöri fyrir þig?`` Hinn svaraði: ,,Herra, að ég fái aftur sjón.``

⁴²And Jesus said to him, See: thy faith has healed thee.

⁴²Jesús sagði við hann: ,,Fá þú aftur sjónina. Trú þín hefur bjargað þér.``Jafnskjótt fékk hann sjónina. Og hann fylgdi honum og lofaði Guð. En allt fólkið, er sá þetta, vegsamaði Guð.

⁴³And immediately he saw, and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people when they saw [it] gave praise to God.
