¹And the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on mount Gilboa.

¹さてペリシテびとはイスラエルと戦ったが、イスラエルの人々がペリシテびとの前から逃げ、ギルボア山で殺されて倒れたので、

²And the Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, Saul's sons.

²ペリシテびとはサウルとその子たちのあとを追い、サウルの子ヨナタン、アビナダブおよびマルキシュアを殺した。

³And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers came up with him, and he was terrified by the archers.

³戦いは激しくサウルにおし迫り、射手の者どもがついにサウルを見つけたので、彼は射手の者どもに傷を負わされた。

⁴Then said Saul to his armour-bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not; for he was much afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it.

⁴そこでサウルはその武器を執る者に言った、「つるぎを抜き、それをもってわたしを刺せ。さもないと、これらの割礼なき者が来て、わたしをはずかしめるであろう」。しかしその武器を執る者がいたく恐れて聞きいれなかったので、サウルはつるぎをとってその上に伏した。

⁵And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

⁵武器を執る者はサウルの死んだのを見て、自分もまたつるぎの上に伏して死んだ。

⁶So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

⁶こうしてサウルと三人の子らおよびその家族は皆ともに死んだ。

⁷And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

⁷谷にいたイスラエルの人々は皆彼らの逃げるのを見、またサウルとその子らの死んだのを見て、町々をすてて逃げたので、ペリシテびとが来てそのうちに住んだ。

⁸And it came to pass the next day, that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on mount Gilboa.

⁸あくる日ペリシテびとは殺された者から、はぎ取るために来て、サウルとその子らのギルボア山に倒れているのを見、

⁹And they stripped him, and took his head, and his armour, and sent [them] into the land of the Philistines round about, to announce the glad tidings to their idols, and to the people.

⁹サウルをはいでその首と、よろいかぶとを取り、ペリシテびとの国の四方に人をつかわして、この良き知らせをその偶像と民に告げさせた。

¹⁰And they put his armour in the house of their god, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon.

¹⁰そしてサウルのよろいかぶとを彼らの神の家に置き、首をダゴンの神殿にくぎづけにした。

¹¹And when all they of Jabesh-Gilead heard of all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

¹¹しかしヤベシ・ギレアデの人々は皆ペリシテびとがサウルにしたことを聞いたので、

¹²all the valiant men arose, and took up the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the terebinth of Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

¹²勇士たちが皆立ち上がり、サウルのからだとその子らのからだをとって、これをヤベシに持って来て、ヤベシのかしの木の下にその骨を葬り、七日の間、断食した。

¹³And Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah which he kept not, and also for having inquired of the spirit of Python, asking counsel of it;

¹³こうしてサウルは主にむかって犯した罪のために死んだ。すなわち彼は主の言葉を守らず、また口寄せに問うことをして、主に問うことをしなかった。それで主は彼を殺し、その国を移してエッサイの子ダビデに与えられた。

¹⁴and he asked not counsel of Jehovah; therefore he slew him, and transferred the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.
