¹And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,

¹この時、主はつむじ風の中からヨブに答えられた、

²Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

²「無知の言葉をもって、神の計りごとを暗くするこの者はだれか。

³Gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will demand of thee, and inform thou me.

³あなたは腰に帯して、男らしくせよ。わたしはあなたに尋ねる、わたしに答えよ。

⁴Where wast thou when I founded the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.

⁴わたしが地の基をすえた時、どこにいたか。もしあなたが知っているなら言え。

⁵Who set the measures thereof -- if thou knowest? or who stretched a line upon it?

⁵あなたがもし知っているなら、だれがその度量を定めたか。だれが測りなわを地の上に張ったか。

⁶Whereupon were the foundations thereof sunken? or who laid its corner-stone,

⁶その土台は何の上に置かれたか。その隅の石はだれがすえたか。

⁷When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

⁷かの時には明けの星は相共に歌い、神の子たちはみな喜び呼ばわった。

⁸And who shut up the sea with doors, when it burst forth, issuing out of the womb?

⁸海の水が流れいで、胎内からわき出たとき、だれが戸をもって、これを閉じこめたか。

⁹When I made the cloud its garment, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it;

⁹あの時、わたしは雲をもって衣とし、黒雲をもってむつきとし、

¹⁰When I cut out for it my boundary, and set bars and doors,

¹⁰これがために境を定め、関および戸を設けて、

¹¹And said, Hitherto shalt thou come and no further, and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

¹¹言った、『ここまで来てもよい、越えてはならぬ、おまえの高波はここにとどまるのだ』と。

¹²Hast thou since thy days commanded the morning? hast thou caused the dawn to know its place,

¹²あなたは生れた日からこのかた朝に命じ、夜明けにその所を知らせ、

¹³That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked might be shaken out of it?

¹³これに地の縁をとらえさせ、悪人をその上から振り落させたことがあるか。

¹⁴It is changed like the signet-clay; and [all things] stand forth as in a garment:

¹⁴地は印せられた土のように変り、衣のようにいろどられる。

¹⁵And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the uplifted arm is broken.

¹⁵悪人はその光を奪われ、その高くあげた腕は折られる。

¹⁶Hast thou entered as far as the springs of the sea? and hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

¹⁶あなたは海の源に行ったことがあるか。淵の底を歩いたことがあるか。

¹⁷Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? and hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¹⁷死の門はあなたのために開かれたか。あなたは暗黒の門を見たことがあるか。

¹⁸Hath thine understanding compassed the breadths of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all.

¹⁸あなたは地の広さを見きわめたか。もしこれをことごとく知っているならば言え。

¹⁹Where is the way to where light dwelleth? and the darkness, where is its place,

¹⁹光のある所に至る道はいずれか。暗やみのある所はどこか。

²⁰That thou shouldest take it to its bound, and that thou shouldest know the paths to its house?

²⁰あなたはこれをその境に導くことができるか。その家路を知っているか。

²¹Thou knowest, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!

²¹あなたは知っているだろう、あなたはかの時すでに生れており、またあなたの日数も多いのだから。

²²Hast thou entered into the storehouses of the snow, and hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail,

²²あなたは雪の倉にはいったことがあるか。ひょうの倉を見たことがあるか。

²³Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of battle and war?

²³これらは悩みの時のため、いくさと戦いの日のため、わたしがたくわえて置いたものだ。

²⁴By what way is the light parted, [and] the east wind scattered upon the earth?

²⁴光の広がる道はどこか。東風の地に吹き渡る道はどこか。

²⁵Who hath divided a channel for the rain-flood, and a way for the thunder's flash;

²⁵だれが大雨のために水路を切り開き、いかずちの光のために道を開き、

²⁶To cause it to rain on the earth, where no one is; on the wilderness wherein there is not a man;

²⁶人なき地にも、人なき荒野にも雨を降らせ、

²⁷To satisfy the desolate and waste [ground], and to cause the sprout of the grass to spring forth?

²⁷荒れすたれた地をあき足らせ、これに若草をはえさせるか。

²⁸Hath the rain a father? or who begetteth the drops of dew?

²⁸雨に父があるか。露の玉はだれが生んだか。

²⁹Out of whose womb cometh the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who bringeth it forth?

²⁹氷はだれの胎から出たか。空の霜はだれが生んだか。

³⁰When the waters lie hidden as in stone, and the face of the deep holdeth fast together.

³⁰水は固まって石のようになり、淵のおもては凍る。

³¹Canst thou fasten the bands of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?

³¹あなたはプレアデスの鎖を結ぶことができるか。オリオンの綱を解くことができるか。

³²Dost thou bring forth the constellations each in its season? or dost thou guide the Bear with her sons?

³²あなたは十二宮をその時にしたがって引き出すことができるか。北斗とその子星を導くことができるか。

³³Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? dost thou determine their rule over the earth?

³³あなたは天の法則を知っているか、そのおきてを地に施すことができるか。

³⁴Dost thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that floods of waters may cover thee?

³⁴あなたは声を雲にあげ、多くの水にあなたをおおわせることができるか。

³⁵Dost thou send forth lightnings that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?

³⁵あなたはいなずまをつかわして行かせ、『われわれはここにいる』と、あなたに言わせることができるか。

³⁶Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the mind?

³⁶雲に知恵を置き、霧に悟りを与えたのはだれか。

³⁷Who numbereth the clouds with wisdom? or who poureth out the bottles of the heavens,

³⁷だれが知恵をもって雲を数えることができるか。だれが天の皮袋を傾けて、

³⁸When the dust runneth as into a molten mass, and the clods cleave fast together?

³⁸ちりを一つに流れ合させ、土くれを固まらせることができるか。

³⁹Dost thou hunt the prey for the lioness, and dost thou satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

³⁹あなたはししのために食物を狩り、子じしの食欲を満たすことができるか。

⁴⁰When they crouch in [their] dens, [and] abide in the thicket to lie in wait?

⁴⁰彼らがほら穴に伏し、林のなかに待ち伏せする時、あなたはこの事をなすことができるか。からすの子が神に向かって呼ばわり、食物がなくて、さまようとき、からすにえさを与える者はだれか。

⁴¹Who provideth for the raven his food, when his young ones cry unto ùGod, [and] they wander for lack of meat?
