¹Wine is a scorner, strong drink is raging; and whoso erreth thereby is not wise.

¹ شراب انسان را به کارهای احمقانه وادار می‌کند و مشروب باعث جنگ و دعوا می‌شود. کسانی‌که معتاد به مشروب می‌شوند، احمقند.

²The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

² خشم پادشاه مانند غرّش شیر است. هرکسی که خشم او را برانگیزاند، جان خود را به خطر می‌اندازد.

³It is an honour for a man to cease from strife; but every fool rusheth into it.

³ دوری از نزاع برای انسان عزّت می‌آورد. فقط آدمهای احمق هستند که نزاع برپا می‌کنند.

⁴The sluggard will not plough by reason of the winter; he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

⁴ شخص تنبل به موقع زمین خود را شخم نمی‌زند، بنابراین هنگام برداشت محصول هرچه می‌گردد، چیزی نمی‌یابد.

⁵Counsel in the heart of man is deep water, and a man of understanding draweth it out.

⁵ افکار شخص مانند آب در ته چاه است و شخص دانا آن را بیرون می‌کشد.

⁶Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; but a faithful man who shall find?

⁶ اشخاص زیادی ادّعا می‌کنند که باوفا هستند، امّا چه کسی می‌تواند شخصی را پیدا کند که واقعاً باوفا باشد؟

⁷The righteous walketh in his integrity: blessed are his children after him!

⁷ فرزندان شخص صادق و درستکار در زندگی سعادتمند خواهند شد.

⁸A king sitting on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

⁸ پادشاهی که برمسند قضاوت می‌نشیند، به دقّت جوانب امر را می‌سنجد و حق را از باطل تشخیص می‌دهد.

⁹Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

⁹ چه کسی می‌تواند بگوید که دل خود را پاک نگاه داشته‌ام و بی‌گناه هستم؟

¹⁰Divers weights, divers measures, even both of them are abomination to Jehovah.

¹⁰ خداوند از کسانی‌که در معامله از وزنه و پیمانه‌های تقلّبی استفاده می‌کنند، متنفّر است.

¹¹Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

¹¹ حتّی کودک را می‌توان از طرز رفتارش شناخت و فهمید که آنچه را انجام می‌دهد، پاک و راست است یا نه.

¹²The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.

¹² گوش شنوا و چشم بینا، هر دو هدیهٔ خداوند هستند.

¹³Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

¹³ اگر خواب را دوست داشته باشی، فقیر می‌گردی پس بیدار باش تا سیر شوی.

¹⁴Bad! bad! saith the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

¹⁴ خریدار به جنس می‌نگرد و می‌گوید: «بد است!» امّا وقتی آن را خرید، از آن تعریف می‌کند.

¹⁵There is gold, and a multitude of rubies; but the lips of knowledge are a precious Jewel.

¹⁵ سخنان حکیمانه گرانبهاتر از طلا و کمیاب‌تر از جواهر است.

¹⁶Take his garment that is become surety [for] another, and hold him in pledge for strangers.

¹⁶ از کسی‌که ضامن شخص بیگانه می‌شود، گرو بگیر.

¹⁷Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

¹⁷ نانی که از راه فریبکاری به دست می‌آید؛ لذیذ است، امّا سرانجام کام را تلخ می‌کند.

¹⁸Plans are established by counsel; and with good advice make war.

¹⁸ نقشه‌هایت را بدون مشورت با دیگران عملی نکن و بدون تدبیر به جنگ نرو.

¹⁹He that goeth about talebearing revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that openeth his lips.

¹⁹ شخص سخن‌چین رازها را فاش می‌کند، پس با چنین شخصی معاشرت نکن.

²⁰Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.

²⁰ چراغ زندگی کسی‌که والدین خود را لعنت کند، خاموش خواهد شد.

²¹An inheritance obtained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed in the end.

²¹ مالی که به آسانی به دست آمده باشد، برکتی نخواهد داشت.

²²Say not, I will recompense evil: wait on Jehovah, and he shall save thee.

²² مگو که خودم انتقام خواهم گرفت، بلکه بر خداوند توکّل نما و او تو را یاری خواهد کرد.

²³Divers weights are an abomination unto Jehovah; and a false balance is not good.

²³ خداوند از اشخاصی که در معامله از ترازو و وزنه‌های تقلّبی استفاده می‌کنند، نفرت دارد.

²⁴The steps of a man are from Jehovah; and how can a man understand his own way?

²⁴ خداوند راه زندگی ما را تعیین می‌کند، پس انسان چگونه می‌تواند بفهمد که راه زندگی او به کجا ختم می‌گردد؟

²⁵It is a snare to a man rashly to say, It is hallowed, and after vows to make inquiry.

²⁵ هرگز نسنجیده نذر نکن، زیرا ممکن است گرفتار شوی.

²⁶A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

²⁶ پادشاه دانا مردم بدکار را تشخیص می‌دهد و آنها را شدیداً مجازات می‌کند.

²⁷Man's spirit is the lamp of Jehovah, searching all the inner parts of the belly.

²⁷ وجدان انسان، چراغ خداوند است که تمام رازهای پنهانی او را آشکار می‌سازد.

²⁸Mercy and truth preserve the king; and he upholdeth his throne by mercy.

²⁸ اگر پادشاه مهربان و درستکار باشد، سلطنتش پایدار می‌ماند.

²⁹The glory of young men is their strength; and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

²⁹ جلال و شکوه جوانان، قوّت آنهاست و عزّت پیران موی سفید آنها. تازیانه و تنبیه سخت، دلها را از بدی پاک می‌کنند.

³⁰Wounding stripes purge away evil, and strokes [purge] the inner parts of the belly.
