¹My son, if thou hast become surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand for a stranger,

¹ ای فرزندم، آیا ضامن همسایه‌ات شده‌ای و به‌خاطر شخص غریبه‌ای قول داد‌ه‌ای؟

²thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

² آیا با دست خود، خودت را به دام انداخته‌ای و به‌خاطر قولی که داد‌ه‌ای گرفتار شده‌ای؟

³Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, since thou hast come into the hand of thy friend: go, humble thyself, and be urgent with thy friend.

³ ای فرزندم، در این صورت اسیر شده‌ای. پس هرچه می‌گویم انجام بده تا خود را آزاد کنی. فوراً نزد او برو خواهش کن و ضمانت خود را پس بگیر.

⁴Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids:

⁴ تا این کار را نکرده‌ای نخواب و حتّی لحظه‌ای آرام ننشین.

⁵deliver thyself as a gazelle from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

⁵ خودت را مثل آهو از کمند و مثل گنجشک از دام صیاد آزاد کن.

⁶Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise:

⁶ مردم تنبل باید از زندگی مورچه‌ها عبرت بگیرند.

⁷which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,

⁷ آنها نه رهبر دارند و نه فرمانده،

⁸provideth her bread in the summer, [and] gathereth her food in the harvest.

⁸ امّا آذوقهٔ زمستان خود را هنگام تابستان ذخیره می‌کنند.

⁹How long, sluggard, wilt thou lie down? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

⁹ شخص تنبل تا چه هنگام می‌خوابد و چه وقت بیدار خواهد شد؟

¹⁰A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest!

¹⁰ او می‌گوید: «اندکی بیشتر می‌خوابم و کمی استراحت می‌کنم!»

¹¹So shall thy poverty come as a roving plunderer, and thy penury as an armed man.

¹¹ امّا وقتی‌که خواب است، فقر و هلاکت مانند راهزن بر او حمله می‌کنند.

¹²A man of Belial, a wicked person, is he that goeth about with a perverse mouth;

¹² مردمان پست و بی‌ارزش همیشه و همه‌جا دروغ می‌گویند.

¹³he winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

¹³ چشمک می‌زنند و حرکاتی می‌کنند که تو را فریب بدهند.

¹⁴deceits are in his heart; he deviseth mischief at all times, he soweth discords.

¹⁴ همیشه فکرشان پر از نقشه‌های پلید و زشت است تا دردسر ایجاد کنند.

¹⁵Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly: in a moment shall he be broken, and without remedy.

¹⁵ به همین دلیل، بلا و مصیبت ناگهانی بر آنها حمله می‌کند و آنها را طوری شکست می‌دهد که دیگر چاره‌ای نداشته باشند.

¹⁶These six [things] doth Jehovah hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

¹⁶ شش، بلکه هفت چیز است که خداوند از آنها نفرت دارد و نمی‌تواند تحمّل کند: نگاه متکبّرانه، زبان دروغگو، دستی که خون بی‌گناهی را بریزد، فکری که نقشه‌های پلید بکشد، پایی که برای انجام کارهای زشت عجله کند، شاهدی که شهادت دروغ بدهد و کسی‌که رابطهٔ دوستان و خویشاوندان را به هم بزند.

¹⁷haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;

¹⁷ ای فرزند من هرچه پدرت می‌گوید انجام بده و آنچه مادرت می‌گوید فراموش مکن.

¹⁸a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations; feet that are swift in running to mischief;

¹⁸ سخنان آنها را پیوسته به‌خاطر داشته‌ باش و آنها را در قلبت حفظ کن.

¹⁹a false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discords among brethren.

¹⁹ تعالیم آنها هنگام سفر راهنما، شبها محافظ و روزها مشاور تو خواهند بود.

²⁰My son, observe thy father's commandment, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;

²⁰ اوامر آنها مانند چراغی روشن است و سرزنش‌های ایشان طریق زندگی را به تو می‌آموزد.

²¹bind them continually upon thy heart, tie them about thy neck:

²¹ آنها تو را از زن شوهردار و از سخنان فریبندهٔ او دور می‌کنند.

²²when thou walkest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and [when] thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

²² زیبایی آنان تو را تحریک ننماید و چشمان افسونگرشان تو را وسوسه نکند.

²³For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

²³ زنا کردن با زن فاحشه، به قیمت یک قرص نان تمام می‌شود، امّا زنا کردن با زن شوهردار به قیمت هستی و زندگی انسان تمام می‌شود.

²⁴to keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

²⁴ آیا می‌توانی آتش را در آغوش بگیری و نسوزی؟

²⁵Lust not after her beauty in thy heart, neither let her take thee with her eyelids;

²⁵ آیا کسی می‌تواند روی آتش راه برود و پایش نسوزد؟

²⁶for by means of a whorish woman [a man is brought] to a loaf of bread, and another's wife doth hunt for the precious soul.

²⁶ همینطور کسی‌که با زن شوهردار همخواب شود، از مجازات در امان نخواهد بود.

²⁷Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his garments not be burned?

²⁷ مردم دزدی را که به‌خاطر گرسنگی دزدی کرده است، سرزنش نمی‌کنند؛

²⁸Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?

²⁸ امّا اگر دستگیر شود، باید هفت برابر آن چه دزدیده جریمه بدهد. باید هرچه دارد بدهد.

²⁹So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife: whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

²⁹ امّا مردی که با زن شوهردار زنا می‌کند، کاملاً بی‌شعور است. زیرا او جان خود را از بین می‌برد.

³⁰They do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry:

³⁰ رسوایی و کتک نصیب او خواهد شد و ننگ او از بین نخواهد رفت.

³¹and if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

³¹ زیرا حسادت خشم شوهر را برمی‌انگیزد و در موقع انتقام هیچ رحم و شفقتی نخواهد کرد. هیچ چیز او را راضی نمی‌کند و به هیچ قیمتی نمی‌توان رضایت او را به ‌دست آورد.

³²Whoso committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

³² هیچ چیز او را راضی نمی‌کند و به هیچ قیمتی نمی‌توان رضایت او را به ‌دست آورد.

³³A wound and contempt shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

³⁴For jealousy is the rage of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance;

³⁵he will not regard any ransom, neither will he rest content though thou multipliest [thy] gifts.
