¹ઈસુએ પછી લોકોને અને તેના શિષ્યોને કહ્યું. ઈસુએ કહ્યું,

¹Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

²“યહૂદિ શાસ્ત્રીઓને તથા ફરોશીઓને મૂસાનો ઉ5દેશ તમને સમજાવવાનો અધિકાર છે.

²saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat.

³તેથી એ લોકો જે કહે તે પ્રમાણે વર્તજો અને તેમની આજ્ઞાનું પાલન કરજો. પરંતુ તે લોકો જે કરે છે તે પ્રમાણે તમે ન કરતા. હું એટલા માટે કહું છું કે, તેઓ જે ઉપદેશ આપે છે તે પ્રમાણે તેઓ પોતે વર્તતા નથી.

³ All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.

⁴તેઓ એવા કડક નિયમો બનાવે છે કે લોકોને પાળવા મુશ્કેલ પડે છે. તે બીજા લોકોને નિયમોનું પાલન કરવા અનુરોધ કરે છે પરંતુ તે લોકો તેમાંનો એક પણ નિયમ પાળવા પ્રયત્ન કરતા નથી.

⁴ For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

⁵“તેઓ સારા કામ એટલા માટે કરે છે કે લોકો તેઓને જુએ. તેઓ પવિત્ર દેખાવા માટે શાસ્ત્ર વચનોના શબ્દો સાથેની પેટીઓ લઈ લે છે અને સ્મરણપત્રોને પહોળા બનાવે છે અને પોતાના ઝભ્ભાની ઝૂલને લાંબી કરે છે જેથી લોકો તેમને ધર્માત્મા સમજે, જુએ.

⁵ But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries phylacteries (tefillin in Hebrew) are small leather pouches that some Jewish men wear on their forehead and arm in prayer. They are used to carry a small scroll with some Scripture in it. See Deuteronomy 6:8. broad, enlarge the fringes or, tassels of their garments,

⁶આવા ફરોશીઓ અને શાસ્ત્રીઓને જમણવારોમાં મહત્વપૂર્ણ સ્થાન પ્રાપ્ત કરવાનું ગમે છે અને સભાસ્થાનોમાં મુખ્ય સ્થાને બેસવાનુ ગમે છે.

⁶ and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

⁷બજારમાં લોકો તેમને માન આપે તે તેમને ગમે છે અને લોકો તેમને ‘ગુરું’ કહીને બોલાવે તેવુ તે ઈચ્છે છે.

⁷ the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.

⁸“પરંતુ તમે ‘ગુરું’ ન કહેવાઓ કારણ તમારો ગુરું તો એક જ છે અને તમે બધા તો ભાઈ બહેન છો.

⁸ But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.

⁹તમારામાંથી કોઈને પણ આ પૃથ્વી પર ‘પિતા’ ન કહો કારણ તમારો પિતા તો એક જ છે અને તે આકાશમાં છે.

⁹ Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.

¹⁰તમે ‘સ્વામી’ પણ ન કહેવાઓ, કારણ તમારો સ્વામી તો ફક્ત એક જ છે અને તે માત્ર ખ્રિસ્ત, જે તમારા સ્વામી છે.

¹⁰ Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.

¹¹તમારામાં મહત્વપૂર્ણ વ્યક્તિ એ હશે કે જે તમારો સેવક બનશે.

¹¹ But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.

¹²જે પોતાની જાતને બીજા કરતા ઊંચો કરશે તેઓને નીચા કરવામાં આવશે. અને જેઓ પોતાને નીચો કરશે તેઓને ઊંચા કરવામાં આવશે.

¹² Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

¹³“હે શાસ્ત્રીઓ અને ફરોશીઓ, તમને અફસોસ છે, તમે ઢોંગી છો, કારણ તમે આકાશના રાજ્યના દરવાજા લોકો માટે બંધ કરો છો. તમે પોતે આકાશના રાજ્યમાં પ્રવેશ કરતા નથી, અને જેઓ આકાશના રાજ્યમાં પ્રવેશ કરવા પ્રયત્ન કરે છે તેમને જવા દેતા નથી.

¹³ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

¹⁴અરે, ઓ શાસ્ત્રીઓ તથા ફરોશીઓ; ઢોંગીઓ, તમને અફસોસ છે! કારણ કે તમે વિધવાઓની મિલકત હડપ કરી જાઓ છો અને ઢોંગ કરીને લાંબી પ્રાર્થનાઓ કરો છો તે માટે તમને સખત સજા થશે.

¹⁴ “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter. Some Greek manuscripts reverse the order of verses 13 and 14, and some omit verse 13, numbering verse 14 as 13.

¹⁵“ઓ શાસ્ત્રીઓ તથા ફરોશીઓ, ઢોંગીઓ, તમને અફસોસ છે! તમારા માર્ગોને એક વ્યક્તિ અનુસરે માટે તમે સમુદ્ર તથા પૃથ્વી ફરી વળો છો; જ્યારે તમને તે વ્યક્તિ મળે છે ત્યારે તમે તેને પોતા કરતાં બમણો નરકનો દીકરો બનાવો છો!

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna or, Hell as yourselves.

¹⁶“ઓ અંધ આગેવાનો તમારી કેવી દુર્દશા થશે? તમારો નિયમ છે કે જો કોઈ પ્રભુ મંદિરના નામે સમ લે તો કાંઈ વાંધો નહિં, અને એ ના પાળે તો પણ ચાલે પણ મંદિરના સોનાના નામે સમ લે તો પછી તેણે તેના સમ પાળવા જોઈએ.

¹⁶ “Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’

¹⁷અરે ઓ અંધ મૂર્ખાઓ! વધારે મોટુ કયું, સોનું કે મંદિર? ‘મંદિર મોટું છે કારણ એ મંદિરને લીધે સોનું પવિત્ર બન્યું છે.

¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

¹⁸“તમે એ પણ કહો છો, ‘કોઈ વેદીના સમ ખાય તો તે અગત્યનું નથી પરંતુ જો વેદી પર ચઢાવેલ વસ્તુના સમ ખાય તો તેણે તે સમ પાળવા જ જોઈએ.

¹⁸ ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’

¹⁹અરે અંધજનો, કોણ મોટું, વેદી પર ચઢાવેલી વસ્તુ કે વેદી? જે અર્પણને પવિત્ર બનાવે છે?

¹⁹ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

²⁰તેથી જે કોઈ વેદીના સમ લે છે તે તેના તથા તેના પર મૂકેલ દરેક વસ્તુના સમ લે છે.

²⁰ He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.

²¹જે મંદિરના સમ લે છે તે તેની સાથે મંદિરમાં રહે છે તેના પણ સમ લે છે.

²¹ He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living NU reads “lives” in it.

²²અને જે આકાશના સમ લે છે તે દેવના રાજ્યાસનની સાથે એ રાજ્યાસન પર બેસનારના પણ સમ લે છે.

²² He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.

²³“ઓ શાસ્ત્રીઓ તથા ફરોશીઓ, ઢોંગીઓ, તમને અફસોસ છે! તમે તમારી પાસે જે કાંઈ ફુદીનાનો, સૂવાનો, તથા જીરાનો દશમો ભાગ છે તે દેવને આપો છો. પરંતુ તમે વધારે નિયમશાસ્ત્રની મોટી વાતોનું પાલન કરતા નથી. તમે ન્યાયીકરણ, દયા અને વિશ્વાસની અવગણના કરો છો. તમારે આ બીજી બાબતોની ઉપેક્ષા કર્યા વિના તમારે આ બધાનું પાલન કરવું જોઈએ.

²³ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, cumin is an aromatic seed from Cuminum cyminum, resembling caraway in flavor and appearance. It is used as a spice. and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

²⁴તમે લોકોને માર્ગદર્શન આપો છો, પણ તમે પોતે જ આંધળા છો! તમે તમારા પીણામાંથી માખી દૂર કરો છો પણ ઊંટને ગળી જાઓ છો.

²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!

²⁵“અરે ઢોંગી, યહૂદિ શાસ્ત્રીઓ અને ફરોશીઓ તમને અફસોસ છે! તમે તમારી વાટકીઓ, થાળીઓ બહારથી સાફ કરી રાખો છો, પરંતુ તમે તમારા પોતાના સંતોષ માટે લોકોને છેતરીને તેની અંદર જુલ્મ તથા અન્યાય ભરો છો.

²⁵ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness. TR reads “self-indulgence” instead of “unrighteousness”

²⁶ઓ આંધળા ફરોશી, પહેલા તું તારા થાળી વાટકા અંદરથી સાફ કર તો તેની સાથે સાથે વાસણ બહારથી પણ સ્વચ્છ થઈ જશે.

²⁶ You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.

²⁷“અરે ઢોંગી, યહૂદિ શાસ્ત્રીઓ અને ફરોશીઓ તમને અફસોસ છે! કે તમે સફેદ ધોળેલી કબર જેવા છો. કારણ કે તે બહારથી સુંદર દેખાય છે પણ અંદરથી મરણ પામેલા લોકોનાં હાડકાઓ અને બધીજ જાતનો ગંદવાડ ભરેલો છે.

²⁷ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

²⁸એવું જ તમારા માટે છે. લોકો તમને બહારથી જુએ છે તો તમે ન્યાયી જેવા દેખાવ છો. પણ અંદરથી તો તમે ઢોંગથી ભરેલા દુષ્ટ છો.

²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

²⁹“અરે ઢોંગી, યહૂદિ શાસ્ત્રી અને ફરોશીઓ, તમને અફસોસ છે! કે તમે પ્રબોધકો માટે કબરો બનાવો છો અને ન્યાયી લોકોની કબરો શણગારો છો.

²⁹ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,

³⁰અને કહો છો, ‘જો પૂર્વજોના સમયમાં અમે હોત તો આ પ્રબોધકોને મારી નાખવા જરાપણ મદદ ન કરી હોત.’

³⁰ and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’

³¹એટલે તમે એ સ્વીકારો છો કે જે લોકોએ પ્રબોધકોને મારી નાખ્યા છે તેમના જ તમે સંતાનો છો.

³¹ Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.

³²તેઓના પગલે ચાલીને અને તમારા બાપદાદાઓનાં પાપ પૂરા કરશો!

³² Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.

³³“ઓ સર્પો! સર્પોના વંશ! તમે નરકના દંડમાંથી કેવી રીતે બચી શકશો!

³³ You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna or, Hell ?

³⁴આથી હું તમારી પાસે પ્રબોધકને તથા જ્ઞાનીઓ તથા શાસ્ત્રીઓને મોકલું છું. તેઓમાંના કેટલાકને તમે વધસ્તંભે જડશો અને કેટલાકને મારી નાખશો. કેટલાકને તમે તમારા સભાસ્થાનોમાં કોરડા મારશો અને ગામેગામ તેઓની પાછળ પડશો.

³⁴ Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;

³⁵“તેથી તમે પૃથ્વી પર સારી વ્યક્તિઓને મારી નાખવા માટે ગુનેગાર ઠરશો, ન્યાયી હાબેલને મારી નાખવામાં આવ્યો. તેનાથી માંડી બેરખ્યાના દીકરા ઝખાર્યાને મંદિરની તથા હોમવેદીની વચ્ચે મારી નાખવામાં આવ્યો. તેથી હાબેલ અને ઝખાર્યાના સમયમાં જે બધા સારા લોકો રહેતા હતા તેના મરણ માટે તમે ગુનેગાર છો.

³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.

³⁶હું તમને સાચે જ કહું છું. આ બધી વસ્તુઓ માટે આ પેઢીના લોકોને ભોગવવું જ પડશે.

³⁶ Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

³⁷“ઓ યરૂશાલેમ, યરૂશાલેમ! પ્રબોધકોને મારી નાખનાર અને દેવના પ્રેરિતોને પથ્થરોથી મારી નાખનાર, હું ઘણીવાર તમારાં બાળકોને ભેગા કરવા ઈચ્છતો હતો, જેમ મરઘી પોતાના બચ્ચોઓને પાંખો તળે એકઠાં કરે છે, પણ તમે એવું ઈચ્છયું નહિ.

³⁷ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

³⁸હવે તારું મંદિર પૂરેપૂરું ઉજજડ થઈ જશે.

³⁸ Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

³⁹હું તને કહું છું, ‘પ્રભુને નામે જે આવે છે તે આશીર્વાદિત છે’ એવું તમે નહિ કહો ત્યાં સુધી તમે મને ફરી કદી જોશો નહિ.”

³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’” Psalm 118:26
