¹Halelúja! Þakkið Drottni, því að hann er góður, því að miskunn hans varir að eilífu.

¹Praise Yahweh! Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

²Hver getur sagt frá máttarverkum Drottins, kunngjört allan lofstír hans?

²Who can utter the mighty acts of Yahweh, or fully declare all his praise?

³Sælir eru þeir, sem gæta réttarins, sem iðka réttlæti alla tíma.

³Blessed are those who keep justice. Blessed is one who does what is right at all times.

⁴Minnst þú mín, Drottinn, með velþóknun þeirri, er þú hefir á lýð þínum, vitja mín með hjálpræði þínu,

⁴Remember me, Yahweh, with the favor that you show to your people. Visit me with your salvation,

⁵að ég megi horfa með unun á hamingju þinna útvöldu, gleðjast yfir gleði þjóðar þinnar, fagna með eignarlýð þínum.

⁵that I may see the prosperity of your chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance.

⁶Vér höfum syndgað ásamt feðrum vorum, höfum breytt illa og óguðlega.

⁶We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.

⁷Feður vorir í Egyptalandi gáfu eigi gætur að dásemdarverkum þínum, minntust eigi þinnar miklu miskunnar og sýndu Hinum hæsta þrjósku hjá Hafinu rauða.

⁷Our fathers didn’t understand your wonders in Egypt. They didn’t remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses, but were rebellious at the sea, even at the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds .

⁸Þó hjálpaði hann þeim sakir nafns síns til þess að kunngjöra mátt sinn.

⁸Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power known.

⁹Hann hastaði á Hafið rauða, svo að það þornaði upp, og lét þá ganga um djúpin eins og um eyðimörk.

⁹He rebuked the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds also, and it was dried up; so he led them through the depths, as through a desert.

¹⁰He saved them from the hand of him who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

¹¹Vötnin huldu fjendur þeirra, ekki einn af þeim komst undan.

¹¹The waters covered their adversaries. There was not one of them left.

¹²Þá trúðu þeir orðum hans, sungu honum lof.

¹²Then they believed his words. They sang his praise.

¹³En þeir gleymdu fljótt verkum hans, treystu eigi á ráð hans.

¹³They soon forgot his works. They didn’t wait for his counsel,

¹⁴Þeir fylltust lysting í eyðimörkinni og freistuðu Guðs í öræfunum.

¹⁴but gave in to craving in the desert, and tested God in the wasteland.

¹⁵Þá veitti hann þeim bæn þeirra og sendi þeim megurð.

¹⁵He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul.

¹⁶Þá öfunduðust þeir við Móse í herbúðunum, við Aron, hinn heilaga Drottins.

¹⁶They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron, Yahweh’s saint.

¹⁷Jörðin opnaðist og svalg Datan og huldi flokk Abírams,

²¹They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt,

²²Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome things by the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds .

²³Þá hugði hann á að tortíma þeim, ef Móse, hans útvaldi, hefði eigi gengið fram fyrir hann og borið af blakið, til þess að afstýra reiði hans, svo að hann skyldi eigi tortíma.

²³Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn’t destroy them.

²⁴Þeir fyrirlitu hið unaðslega land og trúðu eigi orðum hans.

²⁴Yes, they despised the pleasant land. They didn’t believe his word,

²⁵Þeir mögluðu í tjöldum sínum og hlýddu eigi á raust Drottins.

²⁵but murmured in their tents, and didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice.

²⁶Þá lyfti hann hendi sinni gegn þeim og sór að láta þá falla í eyðimörkinni,

²⁶Therefore he swore to them that he would overthrow them in the wilderness,

²⁷tvístra niðjum þeirra meðal þjóðanna og dreifa þeim um löndin.

²⁷that he would overthrow their seed among the nations, and scatter them in the lands.

²⁸Þeir dýrkuðu Baal Peór og átu fórnir dauðra skurðgoða.

²⁸They joined themselves also to Baal Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

²⁹Þeir egndu hann til reiði með athæfi sínu, og braust því út plága meðal þeirra.

²⁹Thus they provoked him to anger with their deeds. The plague broke in on them.

³⁰En Pínehas gekk fram og skar úr, og þá staðnaði plágan.

³⁰Then Phinehas stood up, and executed judgment, so the plague was stopped.

³¹Og honum var reiknað það til réttlætis, frá kyni til kyns, að eilífu.

³¹That was credited to him for righteousness, for all generations to come.

³²Þeir reittu hann til reiði hjá Meríba-vötnum, þá fór illa fyrir Móse þeirra vegna,

³²They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, so that Moses was troubled for their sakes;

³³því að þeir sýndu þrjósku anda hans, og honum hrutu ógætnisorð af vörum.

³³because they were rebellious against his spirit, he spoke rashly with his lips.

³⁴Þeir eyddu eigi þjóðunum, er Drottinn hafði boðið þeim,

³⁴They didn’t destroy the peoples, as Yahweh commanded them,

³⁵heldur lögðu þeir lag sitt við heiðingjana og lærðu athæfi þeirra.

³⁵but mixed themselves with the nations, and learned their works.

³⁶Þeir dýrkuðu skurðgoð þeirra, og þau urðu þeim að snöru,

³⁶They served their idols, which became a snare to them.

³⁷þeir færðu að fórnum sonu sína og dætur sínar illum vættum

³⁸og úthelltu saklausu blóði, blóði sona sinna og dætra, er þeir fórnfærðu skurðgoðum Kanaans, svo að landið vanhelgaðist af blóðskuldinni.

³⁸They shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. The land was polluted with blood.

³⁹Þeir saurguðust af verkum sínum og frömdu tryggðrof með athæfi sínu.

³⁹Thus were they defiled with their works, and prostituted themselves in their deeds.

⁴⁰Þá upptendraðist reiði Drottins gegn lýð hans, og hann fékk viðbjóð á arfleifð sinni.

⁴⁰Therefore Yahweh burned with anger against his people. He abhorred his inheritance.

⁴¹Hann gaf þá á vald heiðingjum, og hatursmenn þeirra drottnuðu yfir þeim.

⁴¹He gave them into the hand of the nations. Those who hated them ruled over them.

⁴²Óvinir þeirra þjökuðu þá, og þeir urðu að beygja sig undir vald þeirra.

⁴²Their enemies also oppressed them. They were brought into subjection under their hand.

⁴³Mörgum sinnum bjargaði hann þeim, en þeir sýndu þrjósku í ráði sínu og urðu að lúta sakir misgjörðar sinnar.

⁴³Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their counsel, and were brought low in their iniquity.

⁴⁴Samt leit hann á neyð þeirra, er hann heyrði kvein þeirra.

⁴⁴Nevertheless he regarded their distress, when he heard their cry.

⁴⁵Hann minntist sáttmála síns við þá og aumkaðist yfir þá sakir sinnar miklu miskunnar

⁴⁵He remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.

⁴⁶og lét þá finna miskunn hjá öllum þeim er höfðu haft þá burt hernumda.

⁴⁶He made them also to be pitied by all those who carried them captive.

⁴⁷Hjálpa þú oss, Drottinn, Guð vor, og safna oss saman frá þjóðunum, að vér megum lofa þitt heilaga nafn, víðfrægja lofstír þinn.Lofaður sé Drottinn, Ísraels Guð, frá eilífð til eilífðar. Og allur lýðurinn segi: Amen! Halelúja.

⁴⁷Save us, Yahweh, our God, gather us from among the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, to triumph in your praise!
