¹さて、主にある囚人であるわたしは、あなたがたに勧める。あなたがたが召されたその召しにふさわしく歩き、

¹I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,

²できる限り謙虚で、かつ柔和であり、寛容を示し、愛をもって互に忍びあい、

²with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love;

³平和のきずなで結ばれて、聖霊による一致を守り続けるように努めなさい。

³being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

⁴からだは一つ、御霊も一つである。あなたがたが召されたのは、一つの望みを目ざして召されたのと同様である。

⁴There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;

⁵主は一つ、信仰は一つ、バプテスマは一つ。

⁵one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

⁶すべてのものの上にあり、すべてのものを貫き、すべてのものの内にいます、すべてのものの父なる神は一つである。

⁶one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.

⁷しかし、キリストから賜わる賜物のはかりに従って、わたしたちひとりびとりに、恵みが与えられている。

⁷But to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

⁸そこで、こう言われている、「彼は高いところに上った時、とりこを捕えて引き行き、人々に賜物を分け与えた」。

⁸Therefore he says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.” Psalm 68:18

⁹さて「上った」と言う以上、また地下の低い底にも降りてこられたわけではないか。

⁹Now this, “He ascended,” what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

¹⁰降りてこられた者自身は、同時に、あらゆるものに満ちるために、もろもろの天の上にまで上られたかたなのである。

¹⁰He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

¹¹そして彼は、ある人を使徒とし、ある人を預言者とし、ある人を伝道者とし、ある人を牧師、教師として、お立てになった。

¹¹He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds or, pastors and teachers;

¹²それは、聖徒たちをととのえて奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせ、

¹²for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ;

¹³わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである。

¹³until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

¹⁴こうして、わたしたちはもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく、

¹⁴that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;

¹⁵愛にあって真理を語り、あらゆる点において成長し、かしらなるキリストに達するのである。

¹⁵but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;

¹⁶また、キリストを基として、全身はすべての節々の助けにより、しっかりと組み合わされ結び合わされ、それぞれの部分は分に応じて働き、からだを成長させ、愛のうちに育てられていくのである。

¹⁶from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

¹⁷そこで、わたしは主にあっておごそかに勧める。あなたがたは今後、異邦人がむなしい心で歩いているように歩いてはならない。

¹⁷This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,

¹⁸彼らの知力は暗くなり、その内なる無知と心の硬化とにより、神のいのちから遠く離れ、

¹⁸being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts;

¹⁹自ら無感覚になって、ほしいままにあらゆる不潔な行いをして、放縦に身をゆだねている。

¹⁹who having become callous gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

²⁰しかしあなたがたは、そのようにキリストに学んだのではなかった。

²⁰But you did not learn Christ that way;

²¹あなたがたはたしかに彼に聞き、彼にあって教えられて、イエスにある真理をそのまま学んだはずである。

²¹if indeed you heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:

²²すなわち、あなたがたは、以前の生活に属する、情欲に迷って滅び行く古き人を脱ぎ捨て、

²²that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit;

²³心の深みまで新たにされて、

²³and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

²⁴真の義と聖とをそなえた神にかたどって造られた新しき人を着るべきである。

²⁴and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

²⁵こういうわけだから、あなたがたは偽りを捨てて、おのおの隣り人に対して、真実を語りなさい。わたしたちは、お互に肢体なのであるから。

²⁵Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another.

²⁶怒ることがあっても、罪を犯してはならない。憤ったままで、日が暮れるようであってはならない。

²⁶“Be angry, and don’t sin.” Psalm 4:4 Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath,

²⁷また、悪魔に機会を与えてはいけない。

²⁷neither give place to the devil.

²⁸盗んだ者は、今後、盗んではならない。むしろ、貧しい人々に分け与えるようになるために、自分の手で正当な働きをしなさい。

²⁸Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.

²⁹悪い言葉をいっさい、あなたがたの口から出してはいけない。必要があれば、人の徳を高めるのに役立つような言葉を語って、聞いている者の益になるようにしなさい。

²⁹Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

³⁰神の聖霊を悲しませてはいけない。あなたがたは、あがないの日のために、聖霊の証印を受けたのである。

³⁰Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

³¹すべての無慈悲、憤り、怒り、騒ぎ、そしり、また、いっさいの悪意を捨て去りなさい。互に情深く、あわれみ深い者となり、神がキリストにあってあなたがたをゆるして下さったように、あなたがたも互にゆるし合いなさい。

³¹Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.

³²互に情深く、あわれみ深い者となり、神がキリストにあってあなたがたをゆるして下さったように、あなたがたも互にゆるし合いなさい。

³²And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
