¹Og han begynte atter å lære ved sjøen, og meget folk samlet sig om ham, så han gikk ut i en båt og satt i den ute på sjøen, og alt folket var på land ved sjøen.

¹And again he began to teach by the sea. And a great crowd was gathered together to him, so that going on board ship he sat in the sea, and all the crowd were close to the sea on the land.

²Og han lærte dem meget i lignelser, og sa til dem idet han lærte:

²And he taught them many things in parables. And he said to them in his doctrine,

³Hør! Se, en såmann gikk ut for å så,

³Hearken: Behold, the sower went forth to sow.

⁴og det skjedde da han sådde, da falt noget ved veien; og fuglene kom og åt det op.

⁴And it came to pass as he sowed, one fell by the wayside, and the birds came and devoured it.

⁵Og noget falt på stengrunn, hvor det ikke hadde meget jord; og det kom snart op, fordi det ikke hadde dyp jord,

⁵And another fell on the rocky ground, where it had not much earth, and immediately it sprung up out [of the ground] because it had no depth of earth;

⁶og da solen gikk op, blev det avsvidd, og da det ikke hadde rot, visnet det.

⁶and when the sun arose it was burnt up, and because of its not having any root, it withered.

⁷Og noget falt blandt torner; og tornene skjøt op og kvalte det, og det bar ikke frukt.

⁷And another fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.

⁸Og noget falt i god jord; og det bar frukt som vokste og blev stor, og det bar inntil tretti fold og seksti fold og hundre fold.

⁸And another fell into the good ground, and yielded fruit, growing up and increasing; and bore, one thirty, and one sixty, and one a hundred.

⁹Og han sa til dem: Den som har ører å høre med, han høre!

⁹And he said, He that has ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁰Og da han var blitt alene, spurte de tolv og de andre som var med ham, om lignelsene.

¹⁰And when he was alone, those about him with the twelve asked him [as to] the parables.

¹¹Og han sa til dem: Eder er Guds rikes hemmelighet gitt, men til hine som er utenfor, sies det alt sammen i lignelser,

¹¹And he said to them, To you is given [to know] the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to them who are without, all things are done in parables,

¹²forat de skal se og se og ikke skjelne, og høre og høre og ikke forstå, forat de ikke skal omvende sig og få forlatelse.

¹²that beholding they may behold and not see, and hearing they may hear and not understand, lest it may be, they should be converted and they should be forgiven.

¹³Og han sa til dem: Forstår I ikke denne lignelse? Hvorledes skal I da skjønne alle lignelsene?

¹³And he says to them, Do ye not know this parable? and how will ye be acquainted with all the parables?

¹⁴Såmannen sår ordet.

¹⁴The sower sows the word:

¹⁵Men de ved veien er de som ordet blir sådd i, og når de har hørt det, kommer straks Satan og tar bort ordet som er sådd i dem.

¹⁵and these are they by the wayside where the word is sown, and when they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.

¹⁶Og på samme måte de som såes på stengrunn; det er de som straks tar imot ordet med glede når de får høre det,

¹⁶And these are they in like manner who are sown upon the rocky places, who when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy,

¹⁷og de har ikke rot i sig, men holder bare ut til en tid; blir det så trengsel eller forfølgelse for ordets skyld, da tar de straks anstøt.

¹⁷and they have no root in themselves, but are for a time: then, tribulation arising, or persecution on account of the word, immediately they are offended.

¹⁸Og andre igjen er de som såes blandt torner; det er de som hører ordet,

¹⁸And others are they who are sown among the thorns: these are they who have heard the word,

¹⁹og verdens bekymringer og rikdommens forførelse og attrå efter de andre ting kommer inn og kveler ordet, og det blir uten frukt.

¹⁹and the cares of life, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things, entering in, choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

²⁰Og dette er de som er sådd i den gode jord: de som hører ordet og tar imot det og bærer frukt, tretti fold og seksti fold og hundre fold.

²⁰And these are they who have been sown on the good ground, such as hear the word and receive it, and bear fruit; one thirty, and one sixty, and one a hundred [fold].

²¹Og han sa til dem: Kommer vel lyset inn for å settes under en skjeppe eller under en seng? Kommer det ikke for å settes i staken?

²¹And he said to them, Does the lamp come that it should be put under the bushel or under the couch? [Is it] not that it should be set upon the lamp-stand?

²²For intet er skjult uten at det skal åpenbares, heller ikke blir noget dulgt uten for å komme for dagen.

²²For there is nothing hidden which shall not be made manifest; nor does any secret thing take place, but that it should come to light.

²³Om nogen har ører å høre med, han høre!

²³If any one have ears to hear, let him hear.

²⁴Og han sa til dem: Akt på hvad I hører! Med det samme mål som I måler med, skal eder måles igjen, og enn mere skal gis eder.

²⁴And he said to them, Take heed what ye hear; with what measure ye mete, it shall be meted to you; and there shall be [more] added to you.

²⁵For den som har, ham skal gis, og den som ikke har, fra ham skal endog tas det han har.

²⁵For whosoever has, to him shall be given; and he who has not, even what he has shall be taken from him.

²⁶Og han sa: Med Guds rike er det således som når et menneske kaster sæden i jorden

²⁶And he said, Thus is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast the seed upon the earth,

²⁷og sover og står op, natt og dag, og sæden spirer frem og blir høi, uten at han selv vet av det.

²⁷and should sleep and rise up night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he does not know how.

²⁸Av sig selv bærer jorden grøde: først strå, så aks, så fullt korn i akset.

²⁸The earth bears fruit of itself, first [the] blade, then an ear, then full corn in the ear.

²⁹Men når grøden er moden, sender han straks sigden ut, fordi høsten er forhånden.

²⁹But when the fruit is produced, immediately he sends the sickle, for the harvest is come.

³⁰Og han sa: Hvad skal vi ligne Guds rike med, eller hvad lignelse skal vi bruke om det?

³⁰And he said, How should we liken the kingdom of God, or with what comparison should we compare it?

³¹Det er likesom sennepskornet, som er mindre enn alt annet frø på jorden når det såes i jorden;

³¹As to a grain of mustard [seed], which, when it is sown upon the earth, is less than all seeds which are upon the earth,

³²og når det er sådd, vokser det op og blir større enn alle maturter og skyter store grener, så at himmelens fugler kan bygge rede under dets skygge.

³²and when it has been sown, mounts up and becomes greater than all herbs, and produces great branches, so that the birds of heaven can roost under its shadow.

³³Og i mange sådanne lignelser talte han ordet til dem, så meget som de kunde høre,

³³And with many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear,

³⁴og uten lignelse talte han ikke til dem; men i enrum utla han alt sammen for sine disipler.

³⁴but without a parable spoke he not to them; and in private he explained all things to his disciples.

³⁵Og samme dag, da det var blitt aften, sa han til dem: La oss fare over til hin side!

³⁵And on that day, when evening was come, he says to them, Let us go over to the other side:

³⁶Og de lot folket fare, og tok ham med sig i båten som han var; men også andre båter var i følge med ham.

³⁶and having sent away the crowd, they take him with [them], as he was, in the ship. But other ships also were with him.

³⁷Og det kom en sterk stormvind, og bølgene slo inn i båten, så at den holdt på å fylles.

³⁷And there comes a violent gust of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it already filled.

³⁸Og han lå og sov bak i båten på en hodepute; og de vekket ham og sa til ham: Mester! bryr du dig ikke om at vi går under?

³⁸And *he* was in the stern sleeping on the cushion. And they awake him up and say to him, Teacher, dost thou not care that we are perishing?

³⁹Og han stod op og truet vinden, og til sjøen sa han: Ti, vær stille! Og vinden la sig, og det blev blikkstille.

³⁹And awaking up he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Silence; be mute. And the wind fell, and there was a great calm.

⁴⁰Og han sa til dem: Hvorfor er I så redde? Hvorledes kan I være så vantro?

⁴⁰And he said to them, Why are ye [thus] fearful? how [is it] ye have not faith?

⁴¹Og de blev storlig forferdet, og sa til hverandre: Hvad er dette for en, som både vinden og sjøen er lydige?

⁴¹And they feared [with] great fear, and said one to another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
