¹{An instruction. Of Ethan the Ezrahite.} I will sing of the loving-kindness of Jehovah for ever; with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness from generation to generation.

²Om Herrens nådegjerninger vil jeg synge til evig tid; fra slekt til slekt vil jeg kunngjøre din trofasthet med min munn.

²For I said, Loving-kindness shall be built up for ever; in the very heavens wilt thou establish thy faithfulness.

³For jeg sier: Miskunnhet bygges op til evig tid, i himmelen grunnfester du din trofasthet.

³I have made a covenant with mine elect, I have sworn unto David my servant:

⁴[Du sier:] Jeg har gjort en pakt med min utvalgte, jeg har svoret David, min tjener:

⁴Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne from generation to generation. Selah.

⁵Til evig tid vil jeg grunnfeste ditt avkom, og jeg vil bygge din trone fra slekt til slekt. Sela.

⁵And the heavens shall celebrate thy wonders, O Jehovah, and thy faithfulness in the congregation of the saints.

⁶Og himlene priser din underfulle gjerning, Herre, og din trofasthet prises i de helliges forsamling.

⁶For who in the heaven can be compared to Jehovah? [who] among the sons of the mighty shall be likened to Jehovah?

⁷For hvem i det høie er å ligne med Herren? Hvem er Herren lik blandt Guds sønner,

⁷ùGod is greatly to be feared in the council of the saints, and terrible for all that are round about him.

⁸en Gud, såre forferdelig i de helliges hemmelige råd og fryktelig for alle dem som er omkring ham?

⁸Jehovah, God of hosts, who is like unto thee, the strong Jah? And thy faithfulness is round about thee.

⁹Herre, hærskarenes Gud, hvem er sterk som du, Herre? Og din trofasthet er rundt omkring dig.

⁹*Thou* rulest the pride of the sea: when its waves arise, *thou* stillest them.

¹⁰Du er den som hersker over havets overmot; når dets bølger reiser sig, lar du dem legge sig.

¹⁰Thou hast crushed Rahab as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with the arm of thy strength.

¹¹Du har sønderknust Rahab* som en ihjelslått; med din styrkes arm har du spredt dine fiender. / {* SLM 87, 4.}

¹¹Thine are the heavens, the earth also is thine; the world and its fulness, *thou* hast founded them.

¹²Dig hører himlene til, dig også jorden; jorderike og alt det som fyller det - du har grunnfestet dem;

¹²The north and the south, *thou* hast created them: Tabor and Hermon triumph in thy name.

¹³nord og syd - du har skapt dem; Tabor og Hermon jubler over ditt navn.

¹³Thine is the arm of might: strong is thy hand, high is thy right hand.

¹⁴Du har en arm med velde; sterk er din hånd, ophøiet er din høire hånd.

¹⁴Righteousness and judgment are the foundation of thy throne; loving-kindness and truth go before thy face.

¹⁵Rettferd og rett er din trones grunnvoll; nåde og sannhet går frem for ditt åsyn.

¹⁵Blessed is the people that know the shout of joy: they walk, O Jehovah, in the light of thy countenance.

¹⁶Salig er det folk som kjenner til jubel*; Herre, i ditt åsyns lys skal de vandre. / {* nemlig over Herren, sin konge.}

¹⁶In thy name are they joyful all the day, and in thy righteousness are they exalted.

¹⁷I ditt navn skal de fryde sig hele dagen, og ved din rettferdighet blir de ophøiet.

¹⁷For thou art the glory of their strength; and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.

¹⁸For du er deres styrkes pryd, og ved din godhet ophøier du vårt horn.

¹⁸For Jehovah is our shield, and the Holy One of Israel, our king.

¹⁹For Herren er vårt skjold, og Israels Hellige vår konge.

¹⁹Then thou spakest in vision of thy Holy One, and saidst, I have laid help upon a mighty one; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

²⁰Dengang* talte du i et syn til dine fromme** og sa: Jeg har nedlagt hjelp hos en helt, jeg har ophøiet en ung mann av folket. / {* SLM 89, 4. 5.} / {** Guds folk.}

²⁰I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:

²¹Jeg har funnet David, min tjener, jeg har salvet ham med min hellige olje.

²¹With whom my hand shall be established; and mine arm shall strengthen him.

²²Min hånd skal alltid være med ham, og min arm skal gi ham styrke.

²²No enemy shall exact upon him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him;

²³Fienden skal ikke plage ham, og den urettferdige skal ikke undertrykke ham.

²³But I will beat down his adversaries before his face, and will smite them that hate him.

²⁴Men jeg vil sønderknuse hans motstandere for hans åsyn og slå dem som hater ham.

²⁴And my faithfulness and my loving-kindness shall be with him, and by my name shall his horn be exalted.

²⁵Og min trofasthet og min miskunnhet skal være med ham, og i mitt navn skal hans horn ophøies.

²⁵And I will set his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.

²⁶Og jeg vil la ham legge sin hånd på havet og sin høire hånd på elvene.

²⁶*He* shall call unto me, Thou art my father, my ùGod, and the rock of my salvation;

²⁷Han skal rope til mig: Du er min far, min Gud og min frelses klippe.

²⁷And as to me, I will make him firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

²⁸Og jeg vil gjøre ham til den førstefødte, til den høieste blandt kongene på jorden.

²⁸My loving-kindness will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him;

²⁹Jeg vil bevare min miskunnhet mot ham til evig tid, og min pakt skal stå fast for ham.

²⁹And I will establish his seed for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

³⁰Og jeg vil la hans avkom bli til evig tid og hans trone som himmelens dager.

³⁰If his sons forsake my law, and walk not in mine ordinances;

³¹Dersom hans barn forlater min lov og ikke vandrer i mine bud,

³¹If they profane my statutes, and keep not my commandments:

³²dersom de krenker mine forskrifter og ikke holder mine befalinger,

³²Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

³³da vil jeg hjemsøke deres synd med ris og deres misgjerning med plager.

³³Nevertheless my loving-kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor belie my faithfulness;

³⁴Men min miskunnhet vil jeg ikke ta fra ham, og min trofasthet skal ikke svikte;

³⁴My covenant will I not profane, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

³⁵jeg vil ikke bryte min pakt og ikke forandre hvad som gikk ut fra mine leber.

³⁵Once have I sworn by my holiness; I will not lie unto David:

³⁶Ett har jeg svoret ved min hellighet, sannelig, for David vil jeg ikke lyve:

³⁶His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me;

³⁷Hans avkom skal bli til evig tid, og hans trone som solen for mitt åsyn.

³⁷It shall be established for ever as the moon, and the witness in the sky is firm. Selah.

³⁸Som månen skal den stå evindelig, og vidnet i det høie er trofast. Sela.

³⁸But thou hast rejected and cast off; thou hast been very wroth with thine anointed:

³⁹Og du har forkastet og forsmådd, du er blitt harm på din salvede.

³⁹Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant; thou hast profaned his crown to the ground:

⁴⁰Du har rystet av dig pakten med din tjener, du har vanhelliget hans krone ned i støvet.

⁴⁰Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strongholds to ruin.

⁴¹Du har revet ned alle hans murer, du har lagt hans festninger i grus.

⁴¹All that pass by the way plunder him; he is become a reproach to his neighbours.

⁴²Alle de som går forbi på veien, har plyndret ham; han er blitt til hån for sine naboer.

⁴²Thou hast exalted the right hand of his oppressors; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice:

⁴³Du har ophøiet hans motstanderes høire hånd, du har gledet alle hans fiender.

⁴³Yea, thou hast turned back the edge of his sword, and hast not made him stand in the battle.

⁴⁴Og du lot hans skarpe sverd vike og lot ham ikke holde stand i striden.

⁴⁴Thou hast made his brightness to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground;

⁴⁵Du har gjort ende på hans glans og kastet hans trone i støvet.

⁴⁵The days of his youth hast thou shortened; thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.

⁴⁶Du har forkortet hans ungdoms dager, du har dekket ham med skam. Sela.

⁴⁶How long, Jehovah, wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy fury burn like fire?

⁴⁷Hvor lenge, Herre, vil du skjule dig evindelig? Hvor lenge skal din harme brenne som ild?

⁴⁷Remember, as regards me, what life is. Wherefore hast thou created all the children of men to be vanity?

⁴⁸Kom dog i hu hvor kort mitt liv er, hvor forgjengelige du har skapt alle menneskenes barn!

⁴⁸What man liveth, and shall not see death? Shall he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah.

⁴⁹Hvem er den mann som lever og ikke ser døden, som frir sin sjel fra dødsrikets vold? Sela.

⁴⁹Where, Lord, are thy former loving-kindnesses, [which] thou swarest unto David in thy faithfulness?

⁵⁰Hvor er, Herre, dine forrige nådegjerninger, som du tilsvor David i din trofasthet?

⁵⁰Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants -- that I bear in my bosom [that of] all the mighty peoples --

⁵¹Kom i hu, Herre, dine tjeneres vanære, at jeg må bære alle de mange folk i mitt skjød,

⁵¹Wherewith thine enemies, O Jehovah, have reproached, wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.

⁵²at dine fiender håner, Herre, at de håner din salvedes fotspor!

⁵²Blessed be Jehovah for evermore! Amen, and Amen.

⁵³Lovet være Herren til evig tid! Amen, amen.
