¹Vai! cum s'a înegrit aurul, şi cum s'a schimbat aurul cel curat! Cum s-au risipit pietrele sfîntului Locaş pela toate colţurile uliţelor!

¹How the gold has become dim! The most pure gold has changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.

²Cum sînt priviţi acum fiii Sionului, cei aleşi şi preţuiţi ca aurul curat altă dată, cum sînt priviţi acum, vai! Ca nişte vase de pămînt, şi ca o lucrare făcută de mînile olarului!

²The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

³Chiar şi şacalii îşi apleacă ţîţa, şi dau să sugă puilor lor; dar fiica poporului meu a ajuns fără milă, ca struţii din pustie.

³Even the jackals draw out the breast, they nurse their young ones: The daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

⁴Limba sugătorului i se lipeşte de cerul gurii, uscată de sete; copiii cer pîne, dar nimeni nu le -o dă.

⁴The tongue of the nursing child clings to the roof of his mouth for thirst: The young children ask bread, and no man breaks it to them.

⁵Ceice se hrăneau cu bucate alese, leşină pe uliţe. Ceice fuseseră crescuţi crescuţi în purpură se bucură acum de o grămadă de gunoi!

⁵Those who fed delicately are desolate in the streets: Those who were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

⁶Căci vina fiicei poporului meu este mai mare decît păcatul Sodomei, care a fost nimicită într'o clipă, fără să fi pus cineva mîna pe ea.

⁷Voivozii ei erau mai strălucitori decît zăpada, mai albi decît laptele; trupul le era mai roş decît mărgeanul; faţa le era ca safirul.

⁷Her nobles were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk; They were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was as of sapphire.

⁸Dar acum înfăţişarea le este mai negricioasă decît funinginea; aşa că nu mai sînt cunoscuţi pe uliţe, pielea le este lipită de oase, uscată ca lemnul.

⁸Their appearance is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: Their skin clings to their bones; it is withered, it has become like a stick.

⁹Ceice pier ucişi de sabie sînt mai fericiţi decît ceice pier de foame, cari cad sleiţi de puteri, din lipsa roadelor cîmpului!

⁹Those who are killed with the sword are better than those who are killed with hunger; For these pine away, stricken through, for want of the fruits of the field.

¹⁰Femeile, cu toată mila lor, îşi fierb copiii, cari le slujesc ca hrană, în mijlocul prăpădului fiicei poporului meu.

¹⁰The hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children; They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

¹¹Domnul Şi -a sleit urgia, Şi -a vărsat mînia aprinsă; a aprins în Sion un foc, care -i mistuie temeliile.

¹¹Yahweh has accomplished his wrath, he has poured out his fierce anger; He has kindled a fire in Zion, which has devoured its foundations.

¹²Împăraţii pămîntului n'ar fi crezut şi nici unul din locuitorii lumii n'ar fi crezut că protivnicul, care -l împresura, are să intre pe porţile Ierusalimului.

¹²The kings of the earth didn’t believe, neither all the inhabitants of the world, That the adversary and the enemy would enter into the gates of Jerusalem.

¹³Iată roada păcatelor proorocilor săi, a nelegiuirilor preoţilor săi, cari au vărsat în mijlocul lui sîngele celor neprihăniţi!

¹³It is because of the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, That have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her.

¹⁴Rătăceau ca orbii pe uliţe, mînjiţi de sînge, aşa că nimeni nu putea să se atingă de hainele lor.

¹⁵,,Depărtaţi-vă, necuraţilor!`` li se striga, ,,la o parte, la o parte, nu vă atingeţi de noi!`` Cînd fugeau pribegind încoace şi încolo, printre neamuri, se spunea: ,,Să nu mai locuiască aici!``

¹⁵Depart! they cried to them, Unclean! depart, depart, don’t touch! When they fled away and wandered, men said among the nations, They shall not live here any more.

¹⁶În mînia Lui Domnul i -a împrăştiat şi nu-Şi mai îndreaptă privirile spre ei! Vrăjmaşul n'a căutat la faţa preoţilor, nici n'a avut milă de cei bătrîni.

¹⁶The anger of Yahweh has scattered them; he will no more regard them: They didn’t respect the persons of the priests, they didn’t favor the elders.

¹⁷Şi acolo ni se sfîrşeau ochii, şi aşteptam zădarnic ajutor! Privirile ni se îndreptau cu nădejde spre un neam, care totuş nu ne -a izbăvit.

¹⁷Our eyes still fail, looking in vain for our help: In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

¹⁸Ne pîndeau paşii, ca să ne împiedice să mergem pe uliţele noastre; ni se apropia sfîrşitul, ni se împliniseră zilele... Da, ne venise sfîrşitul!

¹⁸They hunt our steps, so that we can’t go in our streets: Our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end has come.

¹⁹Prigonitorii noştri erau mai iuţi de cît vulturii cerului. Ne-au fugărit pe munţi, şi ne-au pîndit în pustie.

¹⁹Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the sky: They chased us on the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

²⁰Suflarea vieţii noastre, unsul Domnului, a fost prins în gropile lor, el, despre care ziceam: ,,Vom trăi supt umbra lui printre neamuri.``

²⁰The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Yahweh, was taken in their pits; Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.

²¹,,Bucură-te şi saltă de bucurie, fiica Edomului, care louieşte în ţara Uţ! Dar şi la tine va trece potirul, şi tu te vei îmbăta, şi te vei desgoli!

²¹Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, that dwell in the land of Uz: The cup shall pass through to you also; you shall be drunken, and shall make yourself naked.

²²Fiica Sionului, nelegiuirea îţi este ispăşită: El nu te va mai trimete în robie. Dar ţie, fiica Edomului, îţi va pedepsi nelegiuirea; şi îţi va da pe faţă păcatele.``

²²The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion; he will no more carry you away into captivity: He will visit your iniquity, daughter of Edom; he will uncover your sins.
